The queue of c 15 waiting for Saturday opening at 9 am signalled that we had found an exceptional cafe. Service was friendly, efficient and quick; our scrambled eggs were fabulous, the toast great, the coffee superb. The choice of breakfast was long, but not as big as the lunches. A wonderful find, a memorable experience.

We read about this place and drove an hour to have afternoon tea. We arrived right at closing time and all the staff had gone for the day. We knocked on the door and the owner, Dean, was so gracious to let us in, packed two slices of cake and teas to go on the house. WOW, best coffee walnut cake we've ever had! The cake was moist and light, the sweetness of the frosting restrained by the dark bitter coffee flavor and nutty walnuts--perfectly balanced. The Victoria sponge layered with homemade jam elevated this simple, British classic. Our serendipitous stop coincided with Dean's 15th year anniversary. For anyone looking for the quintessentially English luxury teatime experience, this is it. Gourmet cakes, pastries, and teas, with some of the best customer service we have experienced anywhere. We will definitely go back on our next trip. Six stars if we could, but five does seem to be the max...

What a find, even though it's off the beaten track, in whiting Street, Bury St Edmunds well worth searching out. Yes at busy times you will have to wait to be seated, but it is worth it I promise you. I had the crab, prawn sun blushed tomato mayo sandwich on granary, it comes with a dressed green salad garnish and homemade Coleslaw. My wife had a chicken, Mozzarella and red onion chilli jam toastie, which also came with a dressed garnish and homemade slaw. The staff were attentive and friendly. Five stars.

Such a lovey little cafe serving a huge range of sandwiches. Fresh clean ingredients all homemade, quick friendly service and clean kitchen. You can tell the owners run a tight ship with lots of attention to detail, something that’s missing in lots of places these days in chains etc. Dodge the Costas and the Neros and come here. Eat fresh, shop local, be happy!

Lovely little cafe tucked down a quiet street in Bury St Edmunds. They have 4 A4 pages of different sandwich fillings and toasties. Absolutely delicious and very filling. Not easy to find sarnies as good as these for under a tenner these days. They have a large room at the back, a Quirky little place with character.

We have been more than once and it is always delightful. Wonderful staff who all seem happy and friendly, great coffee, lovely cakes and good lunch options. We never get there in time for breakfast, unfortunately! The only complaint ever is that the cakes in the glass cabinet are very chilled, and don't "unchill" in time for eating, even when waiting for cooked food. But he is quite happy with the date slice anyway :-)

Fabulous sandwiches and prompt, friendly service. Very reasonably priced - my prawn, avocado and lemon mayo sandwich was so full that a lot of it fell on the plate, and came with salad and coleslaw, all for £7.75. I had a lovely frothy cappuccino with lots of chocolate and a delicious chocolate twister biscuit, and my sister's goats cheese sandwich was similarly well-filled and a snip at £6.85. We didn't have room for any of the tempting cakes on offer, sadly, but maybe another time. It's not a large space, but obviously very popular to judge from the queue waiting at the door. Highly recommended.

Good selection of sandwiches (great to have smoked salmon included, which I think is an essential for afternoon tea). Beautiful warm scones & good variety of cakes, all of high quality. The food is a total pleasure & excellent value for money. We chose one (very) full breakfast & one with scrambled eggs, bacon & sausages, with granary bread. We also had a cafetiere of coffee for 2. This restaurant is clean & airy, a real gem. If you are in a hurry for food, go elsewhere as this establishment cooks everything from scratch. It is more than worth the wait. we use to love going to Baileys for lunch, but after are last visit we came away very disappointed as my sister is gluten free and her toastie came out it was so small there was only room for one rash of back , it was like half of are toasties .we asked why is it so small , they replied you can have a jacket potato, why should my sister have to give up having a toastie, like she all way have done and enjoy having the same as us , Had to pay for a second one or she would stay hungry, there was 3 of us eating and a 20 mouth child that is not ready to eat there meals, but they kept asking if the child wanted anything and I was not happy about that ether

The food here is very good, as is the service, but people constantly coming in to queue and leaving the door open in the winter can be annoying and the staff do nothing about it. I think there should be queuing further in the cafe and a necessary porch made inside to keep draughts out. The waitresses are all pleasant, but the woman who appears to be in charge is often a little sour. !

No empty table when we arrived but only had to wait 10 minutes for a table to become free. It was a busy lunchtime period. Table was clean. Prompt service with menus. Drinks came soon after placing our order. Snack of toasted fruit loaf was a few minutes later. Strawberry milk shake was thick with fruit. Fruit loaf was home made and tasted scrummy. I’m grateful I made the mental note to try this place while I’m still in Bury and the women who work there were so so so chatty and genuine nice people. I went in with no idea what to have, I’m often very picky but today I told them I was leaning towards their cajun chicken and that they could choose the rest! They offered up the best additions, even suggested I get it in a wrap and I was all for it. Totally inexpensive as well, so affordable and I think this is the true selling point for Hatters Sandwich Bar, other than their delicious fresh ingredients of course. Pop in for breakfast or lunch and you’ll be sorted right out :)) I WILL be back to try more variations!!!
