Our first visit and we will return. The menu is relatively limited, which I prefer and there was also a special (venison pie for two). All our courses were excellent, although the fish stew portion was a little small and could have done with a few extra pieces of fish in it. The layout of the restaurant groups diners into three separate areas so it feels quite intimate.

This restaurant is fit for those who enjoy well cooked food invariably cooked with meat that is not everybody's taste: rabbit, squid, sweetbreads etc. but cooked beautifully. It's intimate burgundy coloured walls and wooden floors provide undistracting focus on the food. We enjoyed the all of our courses and our wine. The service was knowledgeable, slick and sympathetic. Because of the intimate nature of the place diners were respectful and quiet, certainly not a restaurant that would benefit from noisy families or large groups. Unfortunately, I learned that this favourite of mine is to be sold, a sad day for London.

We've been before and had a knockout meal, about 18 months ago. Went again recently and it wasn't anywhere near as good. Nice menu, nice wine list, nice people looking after you and a nice dining room but the meal was just not up to the standard expected. I had venison which was leathery and took some chewing. Everything else on the plate was cold by the time I got through it. Splendid dessert though but it didn't quite make up for the disappointment of the main course. Won't go again now.

I dined with a small group of friends in the downstairs L-shaped room. Ambience was pleasant, friends chatting on the other tables, the sound level facilitating conversation. Table setting was conventional and stylish. The menu has a selection of about ten starters, ten mains + one or two specials with a few of them left when we dined at 7 30 pm, half a dozen desserts, & cheese board. The wine list has a good selection - probably thirty white and thirty red wines, several additional types (sparkling, orange, dessert, ports etc.). About five white and five red wines are available by the glass, and some fizzy ones. The wines start at about £25 and go up to £100 per bottle, glasses perhaps £6-£10 - a bit on the expensive side if you want a recognisable wine label, but the less well-known wines we selected were very good. The food was good. The waiter recommended the crab on toast starter and I was not disappointed. All of us had poultry of one bird or another, this being a Christmassy sort of dinner; everyone liked their dish but nothing was outstanding. Service was obliging and friendly; there is a 12.5% service charge added on to the bill, I hope the staff are well enough paid.

My 3d time at Magdalen, enjoyed it every time. I find the atmosphere nice without being fancy, very easy to feel comfortable. The food was really good - had the potted crab and then the rare goose breast, which came as advertised and was a lovely belated Martinmas feast with its accompaniment of red cabbage. The cheeses were outstanding and serviced with a few nice extras, but nothing which could detract from the leading actor (the quality of the cheeses themselves). Service was very competent, friendly and extremely helpful (I have a "wing down" so can't carve meat). Thoroughly enjoyable and I will be back, whether with my wife, business colleagues or just a solitary dinner in a very nice place that eases the pain of working late. One other thing to mention is that I really like the seasonal changes in the menu, very good choices Wine list is good, too - nicely assorted incl. good selection of half bottles / by the glass. Price level seems very fair given quality and location.

the component parts of this place just don't quite stack up. the staff although attentive weren't really helpful - especially when asked for advice. the dishes are OK but not special when the venue promises something more. The dissonance this leaves you with causes a vague lack of fulfilment. the menu is good anglo/french fare - potted crab, soup, pheasant, fish stew, venison etc. but none of it reaches above what you would expect in simpler restaurants than this. being charged for an extra plate of bread galled a bit too.

I have been wanting to visit this restaurant for some time and on the whole it was a tad disappointing. First things first - the menu and the food was very good especially the terrine and the fois grois pate. We also had a lovely welcome on arrival but that's the good stuff over with. We ordered pre dinner drinks of Prosecco from a waiter and shortly after the sommelier came over and took our wine choice. The wine came quite quickly and before our pre dinner drinks so we tried to cancel but it was too late. On telling the sommelier we had ordered Prosecco he informed us they didn't sell it - only a sparkling Vouvray. The waiter did not tell us this and yet happily took our order. Instead of a desert we all opted for cheese which was a fixed selection of three types for £10. None of us wanted the Stilton so we asked for only two cheese options each however we were informed that if we did this we would be charged individually for the two cheeses at £5.50 each, ie. £11 for two cheeses, rather than £10 for three! We said this made no sense whatsoever. We left.

Hosted a team Christmas lunch here for a small group. The restaurant had a reasonable menu, while not overly extensive it had sufficient choice for everyone to find something they wanted. Also a good wine list including some higher end reds with equally high end prices, but also some quality wines at more reasonable costs. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was excellent and everyone felt it was exceptional quality. Overall the cost of the meal was quite expensive and probably not a venue for a basic tourist lunch but certainly worth a visit if you are looking for a special meal for two or a small group.

I'm a huge fan of Magdalen, but sadly it was not on form. We had a table booked at 8.00pm (so not late) and on arriving we were told one of the mains was off. On ordering, we were them told the starter most of us had ordered was also off. Given the limited menu (c5 dishes per course) this was not good at all. Also on arriving, it's the first time I've not been greeted and my coat taken. The later arrivals had the same experience. This was an absolutely fantastic find and I can't believe I haven't been here sooner despite having worked on the same street for years! The menu is mouthwatering it was really hard to choose what to eat. This is one of the few places where you look at the menu and just don't care how much it costs because it's been so clearly well thought out. The meal was absolutely spectacular and you could taste all the elements. Everything was mouthwatering - highlights were the pork terrine with spiced clementines, the pheasant (melted in your mouth, so flavoursome) and the mince meat tart that had the perfect balance of mince meat. This was our first visit here as local Londerners. Not disappointed at all. Food first. Two outstanding starters, one of monkfish liver, the other of potted devon crab. Both so full of flavour. Our main courses comprised smoked haddock in a very well cooked sauce, fish stew (again above the norm), yorkshire reared pheasant breasts with excellent veg. and an amazing damson sauce/jelly. The whole was a delight. However, the least appetizing dish to look at; the beef brisket, was outstanding in both cooking and taste. Does not look pretty, but what a taste! We could not fault any of the desserts. However, the one not to miss involves a clementine sorbet like no other. So impressed, we asked the waiter for the recipe and got it. Now for the downside, for us. Cocktails, unless you have a particular palate , avoid. I expect a restaurant of this calibre to serve Prosecco.(I do not like champagne). Their Vouvray alternative, not that great. Two good wines with the meal, but I should not need to ask for a good Cahors red to be served slightly cooler than it came out of a very warm rack. Would I go again: yes.

As you walk in, the first impression is one of a warm and uncomplicated decor with lots of wood, giving the atmosphere of an upmarket Parisian bistro. The welcome was immediate, friendly and unfussy. As we were waiting for one of our party to arrive, we were invited to have a drink at the bar, where we were served promptly, and later not hurried to the table. All three courses were excellent, but the rump of beef (for two) deserves special mention! There is also a good wine list, at not extortionate prices. Nice setting and pleasant ambiance; décor looks great. Food was good - not blown away by it, but good enough.
The one thing that really put us off was the service - the manager was great, gave us some good wine advice and made us feel welcome, but the other two staff members were just completely soulless, uncommunicative .'Eh?' was the common answer to any question we asked and whilst we were standing with our coats in our hands not sure where to put them, the waiter just vaguely pointed us towards the corner of the restaurant where we could hang up our coats, while he could have easily taken them from us. The elderly couple next to us told the waitress that they used to come to the restaurant many years ago and were obviously there to relive a fond memory, but just got a cold shrug from the waitress, they had to fetch their own coats and didn't even get a goodbye or a wave from the staff when they left, I felt embarrassed on their behalf.
This could be an awesome restaurant, would be nice if guests were actually made to feel welcome!

The restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside, but still feels intimate. Food was good - modern British with a bit of Mediterranean. Staff were good, and very accommodating- allowing us to shift our booking back 45 minutes! Although quite noisy, we had a good time, and would come again.

Booked a special lunch here after a trip to the Shard. Excellent set menu and superb service. Two choices for each course, but both were delicious and good value. We had a problem with one dish and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and lovely. Thoroughly recommended.

The kitchen was in good form. The food ('modern British') is always reliable here in my experience but dinner this time was a step up: perfectly cooked middle cut of pork with interesting and flavoursome autumn veg caught my attention, in particular. Generally, the dishes we had (three of us trying different things) were confidently put together, the cod main probably the least successful for us.

I must admit that we regularly use Magdalen for special occasions but I also use it for business lunches, because the food is always at least very good. Our latest trip for my wife's birthday was again excellent. We started with the San Daniella ham salad with pear and toasted almonds.I had the baked cod, with Hispi cabbage – they always do greens so well – and she had the lamb. This was followed by cheese for me and my other half had some delicious chocolate thing.Excellent coffee, service was very good and we had a fantastic time.

OK, so I love Magdalen, and I've been going there since it opened. But there's a reason for that and that is that is simply so consistently great.

Our latest trip for my other half's birthday (she loves Magdalen) was as excellent as ever. Having dined here a few times I had always been impressed by the standard of food and service. On this occasion our starters were mixed up and the grouse was served up raw on the underside. No real apology for the raw grouse other than sorry it wasn't to my expectations. I don't think raw grouse fits anyone's expectations.
This may have just been a blip on a busy Friday night, as otherwise it was a very pleasant evening.

we were surprised by the find. Quite small, but the food was good. No messing around, except a bit too salty tonight! Would have been nice to have slightly less potatoes as we don't like waste. Will likely return in the future.
We had the beef and rump steak. Could have done with a little more bread to start.
More choice for dessert would have been good, but I guess if they change the menu frequently it might work

Really nice meal - not cheap but good value. We were very late for our booking but the waiters were very accommodating and didn't rush us at all, the food came really quickly and was fresh and tasty. There was an excellent selection of wine for £20-30 a bottle. We all had a great time and really enjoyed our food and the experience. Will definitely go back and would definitely recommend.

Business lunch at Magdalen - great menu and lunch offer meant we had some fantastic french cuisine for the same price as a typical sandwich/coffee chain. Food was excellent combined with good service. Will definitely be back.

We booked Magdalen as we thought £16.50 for two courses was good value. Due to our bus being diverted we were 40 minutes late for lunch. We phoned the restaurant to let them know this and they were incredibly kind about it.

The service was excellent and out two courses were extremely tasty and beautifully cooked. I would recommend this wholeheartedly for lunch although I know it is good for dinner too.

I was only in Magdalen for about an hour but in that time I was able to form a strong opinion of a refined, traditional neighbourhood restaurant with attentive service, an inventive menu and fine food. I must have walked past 100 times and never noticed it. Now, thanks to my generous clients, I have a new string to my bow in the London Bridge area. I hope to come back to appreciate its delights at greater leisure.

Four of us dined here on a recent Friday night. I loved our table by the front window - quiet and comfortable. In this age of noisy restaurants it was very welcome! The service was pleasant and professional in the beginning but started to fall apart as the place got busy. Nothing terrible - just a little erratic. The menu was interesting but unfortunately the food was nothing special. We all had different starters and mains but absolutely nothing stood out. Fried potato side dish was like the remnants from the bottom of the chip fryer - they really shouldn't have served them. We probably won't rush back.

Fantastic food and wine and brilliant service. I've been to Magdelen's several times and it never ceases to impress. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys great seasonal food that's been taken to another level. Although not the cheapest restaurant it is outstanding value and worth every penny.

We had our wedding reception at The Camberwell Arms back in September, and we couldn’t have been happier with the entire experience. From the start, Josefin was fantastic in helping us plan the day. She was responsive, attentive to every detail, and went above and beyond to bring our vision to life. The food was exceptional. Wedding meals can often be a bit underwhelming, but Mike and his team created a menu that our guests are still talking about. The dishes were full of flavour, beautifully presented, and exactly the kind of food people wanted to eat—seasonal, hearty, and delicious. The venue worked perfectly for our celebration. We used the downstairs for our drinks reception and dinner, which was cosy and intimate, and then we moved upstairs for dancing. The team made sure the day flowed smoothly, making it all feel effortless. The Camberwell Arms is perfect if you're looking for a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, a fantastic team and incredible food and drink. It was exactly the kind of unpretentious yet special wedding we had hoped for. We’re so grateful to the team for making our day so memorable and would 100% recommend it to anyone planning a wedding or event!

I had an awful experience at this restaurant. There were mice running around, and my food arrived much later than my friends’—cold and without any sauces. The fries tasted sour, almost like they were spoiled. Absolutely terrible:(

Amazing food. Great service. Traditional pub in central London. Friendly staff and a great pint of Guinness! Also serve Tribute and Harveys best!
