We stayed at the campsite so the shop became a place we regularly visited. The shop stocks all local produce jams, chutneys breads etc and sell the most amazing homemade cakes for a very reasonable price compared what we normally pay in the Lake District. The staff were so lovely and welcoming. We were surprised to see it open Sunday so we could stock up on some Quiche and cakes and bread for our journey home. Such a lovely addition to the special little village. We will be back in the very near future xx

A group of us had been walking from Whitby to Lythe and got caught in a thunder storm. We arrived at the Communities Shop very wet and so in need of a cup of tea and cake! This shop fitted the bill completely with delicious cake and stones etc on show. Unfortunately there was no sitting in facilities so the lady took pity on us and went outside and dried off tables and chairs, put cushions out and put the parasol up to keep the rain off. The whole teams were so kind and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. They kept coming out in the rain to make sure we had everything we needed. Then we asked the young guy about buses to take us back to Whitby and he so kindly looked on his app and found out exactly what time the next bus was due and pointed us in the direction of the bus shelter. I cannot thank everyone enough.

What a gem this shop is. The best place in Whitby for cakes hands down. We have tried the Victoria sponge, rockie road, lemon and coconut, caramel slice, and chocolate slab. All were amazing and reasonably priced (compared to other places in Whitby). The variety of cakes changes throughout the week as well, so there's always something new to try. They also sell things like fresh baked quiche and pies, Bothams cakes and biscuits, as well as general goods. The ladies in the shop are always lovely, and I know some are volunteers. This is now our weekly treat stop off.

Visited this little shop whilst staying in Lythe. Ladies working in the shop were lovely and sooo friendly. We bought what we needed and bought some pies and pieces of cake that had been baked that morning. It was gorgeous! The pork pies were amazing. Prices were so cheap, would pay twice the amount at home I am sure. A real treasure of a shop in a beautiful little village.

This is a fantastic community run shop in Lythe village. Really handy if you are staying on the camp site at the rear of the Stiddy. We have camped there many times. The shop has a tea garden at the back. They do good breakfast sandwiches to eat in or take out, ideal if you're camping. They also have a good selection of local produce, bread, bacon, cooked meats, bread, pies & cakes. I can highly recommend this gem of a shop, run by volunteers.

Well stocked shop with a lot of delicious home made cakes and pastries. Bacon and sausage buns were superb. Brilliant and friendly service. Ordered a paper there to be picked up each day and this worked like clockwork. All staff are volunteers. Great place and huge asset to the area.

This shop and Cafe is run by volunteers from the village and is a wonderful hub. The service is simply outstanding, they could not do enough. Two excellent Americanos, two bacon sandwiches and the cakes to take away for the beach are very good. As for the price, you literally could not believe how reasonable they are. And a gorgeous spot at the back, a sun trap if ever there was one. Try it!

Poor service for the amount of staff working at one time. Also food prices are extortionist for the amount you are given I.e the toasties are as thin as a piece of paper!

Called off here en route to Whitby. This is obviously the hub of the village, so very busy but we were served quickly. Coffee and tea perfectly acceptable. Cake a bit dry. Scone okay. Unfortunately, one of us went to use their customer lavatory to discover a filthy mop sticking out of the toilet bowl. Apparently they were bleaching it. The mop that is. IN the toilet bowl. I'll leave it there but Victoria Wood and Julie Walters would have got great mileage out of this one!

Went in at 4.28pm for one item and they were not willing to serve me as they closed at 4.30pm. Poor service. Do they not want custom from locals?

Having driven past, many times, en route to Whitby we hadn't taken any notice, however, a desperate need for tea drove us through the door. What a treat, friendly locals to serve and a selection of locally baked pies, cakes and sausage rolls. A pot of tea holding 6 cups was only £3.00 a real bargain! The small attached shop had almost anything that you would need and we made several purchases at prices which were almost supermarket level.Well done the Lythe community for keeping this business going.

A quintessential little village shop- a deli, fresh bakes form local bakery, speciality preserves and lots lots more, even a selection of gifts. I always look forward driving past the shop to make a stop to stock up on some extra treats and being served by lovely people who would bend over backwards to help. Well done to all involved.

Very cheerful and friendly volunteers running a community village shop and tea room. We had basic and cheap sandwiches and tea. There's a handy free carpark opposite. Just up the hill from Sandsend and a lot cheaper.

We were walking through Scarborough as part of our hike along the Cleveland Way and after walking past the Beach Huts in North, heading towards South Bay, we were on the lookout for somewhere to grab a quick meal. Everywhere seemed crazy busy, but luckily we found this place without a queue - possibly now I understand why no queue though as just wasn't great. My husband's small fish was huge! but he didn't enjoy so ate less than half. My battered sausage and chips was good/average quality, but the sausage was teeny! Still, we ate enough to fill our bellies so we could continue on our walk.

Average fish and chips. Only worth visiting for the vintage styling. Take away service with 10% added to sit in prices. Says freshly cooked to order, the wait said this the taste buds beg to differ. Good portion for chip butty however fish batter want very crisp and soggy at parts.

I can't understand some of the reviews on here. I think people should review things based on reality. This is not Starbucks, Costa or Greggs. It's not Pret, McDonalds or Burger King either. It's a facility within a charity aiming to bring alive an era before these massive organisations had taken over our society. Manned not by highly paid executives rolling out strategy to beat the competition but run on a shoestring by volunteers and a few paid employees who are providing memories for a public who remember station waiting rooms and buffet bars exactly like the Signals cafe. This NOT a commercial operation, it is part of the exhibit of the railway buffet bars of the 40'-60's when a certain Dr Beeching took an axe to the railways which provided links to towns an villages throughout the country. Review it in the context of it's situation. To the women who were on duty when my family of 5 adults and 2 children called, thanks for providing us with the food and drinks which I remember from mainline and local stations operating pre Beeching cuts. It let us pass an hour in the type of buffet which was commonplace in my young days. Also gave me an opportunity to educate my youngsters over the life I used to live in and brought much of what they had just experienced in the steam journey from Whitby. A thorough authentic experience in keeping with the North Yorkshire Railway objectives To other reviewers who were less than appreciative of the reconstruction of the rail experience pre 60's, I suggest you volunteer your time and skills to one of the thousands of charities in the U.K. who are doing their best to serve their local communities. It might just help you come to grips with life and appreciate the work others do to help their fellow human beings.
