It stands on the south side of the central bridge over the Ouse but unlike some brash neighbours it is quiet, understated and delicious. Unassuming from the outside , the restaurant is warm and powerful inside. Polished wood tables, carefully set up in a small room with kitchen behind, and a staircase to another small dining area, set the scene. Wine racks of wines from Italy surround you. More wood ;and a discreet low curtain at the windows (providing privacy for diners) complete the interior scene. And that combination of elegant but understated design and attention to detail is all a prelude to marvellous wine and excellent food. This is where the attention is being led. My first visit for a glass of wine and a snack after a matinee at the theatre. The wine list is all Italian and needs exploring; wines by the glass (sorry a beautiful little carafe to pour into your glass that is chosen to suit the wine) are interesting and delicious and fairly priced. Food: well presented and so much better than a multitude of Italian restaurants in York. I will return; I need ot return to taste what looks to be a genuinely Italian menu. They do offer a menu degustation and a Sunday lunch menu. The a la carte is fine as the wine bar concept enables a real pick and choose. It does get busy (no surprise there) so do book. I was enthralled by this place and long to return soon. Standard of service - this is informal dining but the attention and friendliness of staff is excellent. One of the staff politely asked if she could save my coat that I had slung over the back of a chair and was touching the ground. So informal, so polite but so attentive. I am smitten by the place.

07/03/2020: We walked by and were so intrigued by the deli on the ground level we booked a table for dinner. We got a table upstairs where it is a bit cramped, but the food is oh so worth it. There were many excellent choices on the menu, but with the pasta made in house, I had to opt for the cannelloni. Husband and I shared the bruschetta as a starter and he chose the risotto for his main. Said it was the best ever and my cannelloni was amazing as well. Wish we could have stayed in York longer just to eat here again! Excellent service.

Delrio's Restaurant

20/07/2020: This was our first experience in a restaurant post Covid. They seemed very well organised from the door to the table, all masked and protected. First time in the restaurant but was impressed with both the service and the quality of the food. Tried steak and it was large and very tasty, went well with a nice bottle of Rioja.
