Having been for a coffee a few times before, I recently decided to come here for a meal with friends and we all loved it. The food was tasty and authentic with quality ingredients, the setting is really cool and a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff were all lovely. Special mention to our waiter Diego who went above and beyond to make sure we had a top evening. I will definitely be returning for a meal again soon and would definitely recommend to others.

We visited because we spotted the amazing looking pastries in the window and learned that the one that caught our eye was a 'cruffin' a cross between a croissant and a muffin. We bought one each and went off to try it somewhere quiet. It was incredible - almost like a doughnut - with jam AND custard inside - a cadbury's chocolate flake on top with more custard and sprinkles. Would definitely go back to try their other food!

Expensive and mediocre at best - ordered 2 salads. The salad leaves were gritty and each of the salads were simply out of a jar or packet. So basic

The cruffins here are the star of the show! There's a range of sweet treats in the window though, and good coffee. The lunch menu isn't the largest in the world (couple of salads and a few brushettas and paninis) but its nice food. There is a little courtyard out the back if the weather is fine.

Visited late Saturday afternoon. The chef served a wonderful fresh vegetarian sharing board full of flavour. We were recommended the most fabulous crisp Vermentino. Great service and a very caring family vibe. We finished our wine in their little garden courtyard in the sunshine. What a treat. Thank you.

On a trip to York I thought I would try the La Bottiga Cafe as from the outside it looked very nice. On entering the cafe I could see a table for four but thought I would try upstairs for a smaller table as I was on my own. When I got to the top of the stairs I was about to ask the waitress how I place my order. However before having chance to ask I heard a man (I assume he was the cafe owner) shouting up the stairs saying ‘excuse me where are you going’ and then asked ‘are you meeting someone’? I said not and was just finding a seat. At this point he sighed more than once rolled his eyes and said I needed to wait downstairs to be seen. His tone of voice and the fact that he was shouting made me feel extremely embarrassed, humiliated, and intimidated. I even questioned in my mind if I’d started to enter a private area, or indeed was he questioning my character. I followed the man downstairs and he pointed to a sign that said please wait to be seated, I apologized and said I did not see it. I can only assume it was not in my line of vision as I walked in. It was a genuine mistake. I wanted to walk out but the man in what I can only describe as an unfriendly tone asked me what I wanted to order. Halfway through serving me and without explanation he said something quickly to another lady serving asking her to take over my order. She was in the middle of taking another order. When my order came I told the waitress I did not like the way the man had spoken with me. She gave me a look of I believe to be acknowledgement. I have to say at this point I was close to tears. I had ordered a latte coffee with my food and it was lukewarm. Under normal circumstances I would have asked for this to be hotter, however, I felt very vulnerable and did not want to experience any further intimidation. I have visited many cafes in my home town, across the country, and indeed across the world and never in my time have I been made to feel as I did. Yes I may have missed the sign, it was a genuine mistake. If the man had spoken to me quietly and with a warm friendly approach, or asked one of the waitresses to guide me I would have had a very different experience. Instead I feel I have been publicly humiliated as this was all happening in front of staff and other customers. I had hoped it would be a cafe I would return to but never again.

We always choose small independent venues if we can. The staff were friendly but the coffee and food were diabolical, I felt ill for the rest of the day. Luckily there is plenty of choice in York, I guess they can't all be good.

This friendly York cafe is a busy place, loved by locals like me as well as visitors. The staff are friendly and efficient but because it is very popular you need to take into account that things like a good Italian snack take time. With the abundance of places to eat in York, it's difficult to stand out. However, we really enjoyed our first visit here today and will be back. It's quite expensive, but the pannini, bruschetta, cakes and coffee were all excellent so we didn't mind paying a bit extra. The negative reviews on here seem to focus on the staff. Our experience was that they welcomed us in, explained all about the specials and cakes on diplay, and we didn't have to wait long for the food. They all seemed very friendly throughout. A genuine Italian run café and I would recommend this place.

We popped in here for a light lunch and chose the "Specials" of the day, a delicious Bruschetta with buffalo mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and cured ham served on local bakers sourdough bread with a side salad and dressing. It was a nice touch that the chef came to ask how our lunch was. Afterwards, we could not resist the sweets which were equally as delicious. The staff are welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed, with many different local or Italian produce to purchase too! We will certainly return in the future. Thank you to all at La Bottega.

We popped in here for a coffee on our last morning in York. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and we both laughed when my friend ordered a cannelloni with her latte, rather than a cannoli! I opted for a cappuccino. It was quite busy inside and so the items did take quite a while to arrive and when they did my coffee was sadly luke warm. The lady seemed to be rushed off her feet though and so I just drank as much of it that I could. My friend enjoyed her cannoli but as I don’t like them, I didn’t try it.

My partner and I stopped here for lunch after wandering around the shambles for a bite to eat as the window display looked good and the menu tickled our fancy. We were in the mood for a light lunch and the panini options appealed to us. There are several filling choices available on three different breads; focaccia, ciabatta or Italian flatbread. There was also two specials on offer which the owner talked us through, and whilst looked tempting, we decided to go for the artisan roast ham and the Parma ham paninis on different breads (focaccia and ciabatta). To go with our food we ordered a coffee and a soft drink. I would usually go for a Flat White, but this was not on the menu so I opted for a Cortado as I don’t particularly enjoy large milky coffee. However, I did notice later on that another customer ordered a Flat White without it being a problem. They were obviously in ‘the know’ and were aware of the secret menu not advertised to newcomers. Why not just put it on the menu if you are going to sell them?? The coffee was disappointingly poor to say there was an expectation of ‘Authentic Italian Coffee’ and the effort to promote the use of award winning coffee is featured on the socials. The espresso tasted burnt and bitter, if not a little boozy (unintentional) and the texture was too airy and dry. Almost half the cup was just froth, far from the small layer of smooth foam you would expect at the top of a well made Cortado. You can have the best beans in the world, but if you butcher it at the coffee machine you do an injustice to the hard working people who grow and roast it. The paninis however were very tasty and we were pleased with the two choices we went for. We personally enjoyed the Artisan Roast Ham and Smoked Scamorza Cheese Panini because the flavour combinations were slightly different to sandwich fillings offered in many other places. Service was friendly but the system seemed a little chaotic and left some customers a little muddled. There didn’t seem much organisation and things felt a bit ‘off the cuff‘, which insistently wasn’t an issue for us but could become a problem during busier periods.

Dropped in for a coffee and cake. Waited patiently inside the door whilst two workmen worked out how many biscuits they could buy with the change in their pockets (rolls eyes)Whilst they were being served people arrived behind us, but left due to the limited amount of standing room. When our turn came I asked for a table for two. After some questions about whether it was just cakes or a meal we wanted the lady said that she would show us to our table, and then we would have to come back and queue again to place our order. This system is ridiculous and makes we wonder whether the owners have ever run a cafe before. You need to change your system!Perhaps move the till or the Wait Here sign so there is more queuing space. Chat less and get people served! Or perhaps lead people to a table and then come back and take their order. You know, like 90% of other coffee shops! Otherwise you don’t stand a chance of filling all those seats and making a profit.

We spotted the wonderful looking independant cafe on our visit to York and decided to pop in for a coffee and piece of cake, which looked amazing. On entering we could see spaces to the rear of the cafe and a lady was being served at the counter in front of us. We waited and I set about choosing a cake then as the lady in front was leaving my partner suggested I go take a seat while he ordered and paid. I'd taken not 3 steps further past the service point when a terribly embarrassing and aggressive woman shouted across to me "CAN I HELP YOU?!" The entire cafe turned and I felt like a naughty child... I explained I was just going to get a seat and she didn't let me finish before responding "WELL ARE YOU HERE FOR FOOD OR JUST COFFEE?" Again I felt incredibly intimidated and gestured to my partner and said just coffee and stepped back to stand in line, blocking the entrance and exit, and wait for service. Nowhere in the entrance is it indicated we should wait to be seated and even if it had a quiet reminder to do so would have been more appropriate! I said to my partner we should just go and he insisted we wait and see as it all looked so lovely. We decided against the cake, and proceeded to order a black Americano and a tea, at which point she peered over her glasses at me asking "which tea?!" as though I was wasting her time. She then told us there was one table upstairs if we were going to eat but there was a 20 minute wait for food, or a table in the lounge area but the seats were very low. Not sure of the relevance of the wait for food or the low seating as we were just having hot drinks and are not elderly or incapable of sitting in an easy chair. We selected the lounge, paid, and she gestured toward the rear of the cafe where I had initially headed to sit. The tea and coffee were average and the young waiter friendly enough but this lady, I presume the owner, and her entire manner completely ruined our experience. She wandered through barking at customers eating, "is everything ok?" And I felt this rather pointless as I very much doubt anyone would dare suggest it wasn't! We drink our drinks quickly, used the bathroom and left, making a point of saying thank you to the staff at the counter, they responded cheerfully but the lady was busy rearranging cakes in the window so I caught her eye and smiled and said "Thankyou" again directly to her.. "Bye!" was her curt reply. We try our best to always choose small independant coffee shops and restaurants, wherever we go.... Very sadly we will not be going back to this one. What a shame as the cakes and menu did look amazing.

This is a charming place, a simple service counter with a huge coffee machine turning out the most delicious Italian coffees. Some cakes and simple dishes are available. They may even do tea or other drinks but the coffee is the real reason I visit. There is a variety of seating in the front room, in the back alcove and then upstairs. It is the ground floor that has the atmosphere as people are dashing in for take away espresso or the hangover cure or the morning at work wake me up. It can get busy ad seating is limited so there may be a slight wait to place your order and get seated. Your order is brought to your table.

Visited today. Friendly greeting, efficient ordering and service but awful food. No olives - which Italian cafe does not have olives??? Dry focaccia, the worst salami I've ever had and something else brown and hard masquerading as another type of meat which wasn't in the sandwich description and tasted and smelled 'off'. The melted cheese was cold and rubbery, while the sandwich was lukewarm. We left both sandwiches and complained to the waitress. When we went to leave the atmosphere was distinctly frosty, no apologies, no thank you, no goodbye and definitely no refund for the the inedible sandwiches. There are a lot of very good Italian restaurants in York, unfortunately I think we chose the worse one today.

I have visited La Bottega a number of times and have always found their products to be tasty, if a little on the expensive side. Now it seems they have taken this overpricing to a whole new level. On passing this morning, I saw a delicious looking last piece of carrot cake in the window. I went in, paid my £2.95 and watched as - to my dismay - the lady behind the counter cut the already small piece of cake in half. This was no mean feat and left two pieces, each of which could practically be seen through and would have cost almost £1 per each of the three bites it would have taken to eat. I questioned as to whether this was representing value for money and was told, rather defensively, "have you seen the price in Betty's?". I replied that Betty's was excellent, and didn't charge that much for so little, upon which I was aggressively thrust my money back and told to leave. I questioned still further why they were taking this attitude, upon which the man in charge became more aggressive in his insistence that I leave. Clearly this is an establishment which would rather take advantage of another unsuspecting customer rather than back down and recognise that overcharging to that level is simply not acceptable.Thankfully, I took my money and went down the road to Wheldrake's and purchased a fabulous piece of cake - home made and infinitely better value for money.I understand that it is tough for the hospitality industry at the moment and that perhaps La Bottega is struggling to make ends meet, but taking advantage of customers and hoping not to be questioned on it simply isn't the answer. In a city centre hugely overpopulated with cafes that will sell you a coffee and a piece of cake, this is one establishment York could well do without.

My partner & I visited for breakfast on a Sunday morning. The staff were very rude & unprofessional. I recommend that you pick one of the other wonderful coffee shops in the centre of York. After ordering & paying at the counter, the waitress said she would be over shortly with juice. Having never visited before, I assumed this was part of their breakfast. As promised, the waitress brought us some apple juice. A few minutes later, she returned to say she had made a mistake & she was supposed to bring us two lattes. A different server then came over & asked why we had started to drink the juices when we didn’t order them; she was quite aggressive. We received our coffees & food but it was clear that she held resentment, so we asked if there was a problem. She said “No”.Upon leaving we said thank you & goodbye as we passed the counter. There was no response, instead the staff started speaking to each other in a different language. As we walked down the street, a member of staff opened the door and shouted to us. We returned to the business, confronted the two staff members who said we had left without paying for our juices. Overall, the situation was handled very poorly. Customers shouldn’t be held accountable for staff mistakes & staff should never be aggressive to customers. If the server had said that she would like us to pay for the juices when we asked if there was a problem, that would have been ok but to shout at us on the street as if we were criminals. What started out as a pleasant visit, turned into a very uncomfortable experience & assured that we will not be returning again.

Los pasteles que tuvimos fueron increíbles, el servicio fue amable y excelente. Mesas bien distribuidas tan ideales en este mundo en el que vivimos actualmente. Volveremos

Strolled by on a sunny Saturday afternoon for tea and a snack. The vienesse swirl and the millionaires slab were fantastic. Sheer gluttony but absolutely worth it. Very friendly staff and there was even a seating area outside in the back 'al fresco'. Delightful.

From the moment you enter the tone is set - very covid safe of course, but still that friendly, personal service. Beautiful selection of treats but the biggest of treats - the delicious coffee. Will be back for food shortly. Enjoy!

Pruébalo, no te decepcionará. ¿Un café caliente encantador también?

2 bus passes tempted in by the cakes in the window for “brunch” . Ground floor full but was led up steep stairs to empty room above. Normally this would have meant a trip back downstairs to the counter to collect menus and then another excursion downstairs to order. However..given menu to take up and manager waited till we had chosen saving the journey. Both had their equivalent of cheese on toast which was absolutely delicious on super soft panini....the real deal. Modicum of salad leaves and half a tomato! on the plate which we both thought mean.Sadly too full to order cake but will be back another time for that.. all staff friendly and seemed to value our custom.

The best coffee I have ever had. Lunch was sourdough bruschetta with grilled peppers, goats cheese with pear chutney and salad. Very tasty. Followed by a generous slice of coffee and pecan cake which was delicious. And more coffee. The service was good. Friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back.

On Saturday the 4th January after a walk around the walls I was fortunate to find this cafe on Goodramgate at No 23, I have to say this is the most charming CAFE, I watched as an old lady entered to enquire about the cakes and breads in the window, I was so impressed by the attention given to her by such a lovely young woman who was kindly, attentive and helpful to a very old and rather frail old person, it was so heart warming to see, it was obviously a family business and one to be admired and used.I was only sorry I had not come across it sooner, if and when I return to York I shall not be in the queues elsewhere ! I shall definitely head to La Bottega, I saw the food coming out and it looked absolutely delicious, but the family are simply delightful , please support them and pay them a visit, Quality food, wonderful attitude to the customer and a delight to witness.

My daughter in law had passed this cafe and been seduced by the cakes on display in the window. We arranged to meet, along with my grand daughter. The staff were very welcoming and so efficient. They had hot chocolate, which they really enjoyed. I had a soft drink and we had some of their delicious cakes. Absolutely yummy and I would happily return. The staff were extra efficient and friendly.

A really intriguing and perfectly professional coffee shop, top of its game with an amazing selection of cakes (there will be at least 3 that you cant choose between) and a very high standard of customer service and care. We loved the buzz of the place and the cosy interior along with the family feel.

Always visit this cafe when I am by myself in York. Somewhere where I can go for my favourite cake batten burg and tea whilst the family go to watch the football. Thanks for always being friendly and keep making the cakes I will be back next week for my free drink as I have now filled my third loyalty card.

This is my second review, because I want this time to recommend a wonderful and unusual bottled drink I bought there to have with my lunch. It's called Meld Zen and is sparkling, chilled, made with apple and a hint of ginger. Subtle, therefore not overpowering, and I found it a perfect accompaniment to my lunch.

I recommend the caramel, banana and pecan shortbread - it was gorgeous! There were so many delicious looking cakes I found it hard to make a decision so I got a piece of Battenberg to take away. I look forward to trying it later. I will definitely have to pop back at some point to try some of their other stuff.

We were served by Soufyane who was the perfect host - smart, extremely friendly and totally professional. The food (we opted for the two-course lunch) was superb: fresh ingredients, beautifully prepared and served. We had a glass of red wine which complemented the food perfectly.

Unfortunately did not have a great experience here due to mistakes that could have been avoided, we booked a table for a work celebration there was about 20 of us, we preordered based off the menu online. I had preordered penne marinara from their online menu, as I am from England I understood that this was just a tomato pasta sauce, and there is nothing on their online menu to suggest marinara is seafood, however I received a penne pasta with tomato sauce and seafood. My sister is allergic to seafood and I don’t eat it to keep her safe. I told them I didn’t order seafood penne, he became angry and shouted at me that I did, I asked to see the menu when he showed me, that’s when we all realised their online menu is different to the one in the restaurant, he brought me a menu to say marinara is seafood, but this is not mentioned on the online menu we used when we preordered, and unfortunately being English and not being Italian, marinara in England is just tomato garlic sauce not seafood like it is in Italy, my fault for not knowing marinara means seafood in Italian but the manager or owner who was serving us just began shouting at me. A female waitress apologised and moved him away from me and brought me just a tomato penne pasta said sorry again and understood what had happened and fixed the issue without an issue, clearly a mistake on both parts. After I’d eaten it the angry manager came over and asked me how my seafood pasta was sarcastically. 3 or 4 of us preordered the online menu tomato garlic bread to start, and one of us ordered a tomato garlic bread for their main. But when it arrived in the restaurant it was a plain garlic pizza bread, as their menu in their restaurant is different to the one online and doesn’t include tomato. Also despite pre ordering two of the starters were missing and had to be chased up 10 mins or so after we had all eaten our starters and the same happened again for our mains, two were missing and a side of chips which we had to chase up. We spent about £582 and just didn’t feel we had a good experience despite pre ordering and we even brought our pre order on a document with us to make sure we were organised when we got there. Food was excellent however and we had a good time. Just a shame to be shouted at in a restaurant by the manager at what clearly was a genuine mistake, as I don’t speak Italian.
