Mamma Mia in York

Not pretentious, not trying to be anything other than a simplistic Italian. Very welcoming atmosphere and enjoyable food.

I went to this restaurant in 1987 whilst a student in York, I remember the lovely garlic pizza bread and superb meals here. Now returned 37 years later to find its run by the same couple and equally delicious. A real rare treat.

Amazing food and amazing service, I never got the old chaps name that waited on us but he was lovely, a real friendly gentleman , it was nice to meet him and the other staff were very attentive, the main guy on the till was great too and offered us another free lemon chello but we were dashing for a bus, we enjoyed our visit and will be back, thanks Neil and Cayla

This place was recommended by someone so thought we’d give it a try! Greeted by staff who aloud us to choose where we sat! The decor and atmosphere was so authentic! The food spoke for itself! Authentically superb! The staff were so friendly, professional from the Chef to the to the wait staff (especially the Lovely Lucy!) The only thing that let it down was an older Man (employer) addressing staff unkindly! But everything else Superb! Worth a visit in York!!!

Celebrated Mother’s Day here and it was such a lovely place. It’s great to find an authentic Italian, with food probably as good as you can get in Italy itself! The staff are always amazing, they can’t do enough for you. Would eat everyday here if I could!

We have eaten here many times. A bustling friendly Italian restaurant with good food a good value. Pizzas in the past have been excellent but this time we went for other options and enjoyed them. Lasagne, spaghetti and aubergine were all very good. Service is friendly. Management clearly wants to provide a good experience. Will come again.

Our first night in York and we came across Mama Mia via Google Reviews. It was only a short walk from where we are staying and from the moment we entered till the moment we left, the staff made us welcome and treated us like we were old friends. We ordered the sharing platter for one and Parmagiana Melazane as starters and the Vesuvio and Quatro Stagionne Pizzas as our mains. All our dishes were delicious and presented beautifully and professionally. We were too stuffed to try dessert but got given limoncellos after our coffees. Would we go again. ABSOLUTELY!!!! ❤️

Our family had a wonderful meal here this week. Lovely food, friendly service and a lovely ambience. Enough vegetarian options to offer too. I would definitely recommend Mamma Mia.

Had family meal(mam,dad,two daughters 17,11) on New Year's Eve, after reading good reviews on local website. Very surprised to find no chicken pasta dishes on main menu. My chicken/mushroom risotto was the worst I've had in a restaurant-small portion for £12.50,overcooked rice, roughly cut chicken, no herbs, tasted of chicken soup-really bad. Daughter's lasagne was overheated, lacking in beef, tasted like ready meal and in my opinion, should've come with chips and salad. Wife had calamari starter costing £9.50.For me this entitles you to a better garnish/salad than 1 slice each of cucumber, tomato,lemon, a lettuce leaf and a single piece of parsley in a little corner of the plate. Children's meal was a decent Margherita pizza and soft drink. The place feels authentic Italian but it's all about the food and on the whole we were very disappointed.We are not Italian but cook our own Italian food at home and it's much better than this.I feel angry enough to write this review as I don't appreciate paying good money for food that's been cooked without care and thrown on the plate in small amounts. It's why I'm really going off eating out. Polite service from all the staff is not enough at all. Finally, I've also got to say the Men's room was authentic - 1950's style, not clean. Don't enjoy doing this but also, don't like being ripped off. Didn't express my opinion on the night as we had kids with us but Mr chef, your risotto was spazzatura!

We were walking around York looking for somewhere to eat on Saturday night, and came upon this delightful authentic Italian restaurant. Staff very friendly, especially the older gentleman. We order 2 starters to share and a main each, all food came out well presented, piping hot and freshly cooked. We will be back when we next visit York.

Still very nice but as good as the first time. The calzone was less flavoursome and a little light on ham. Tasted a bit like a takeaway pizza. On the other hand the profiteroles were amazing and the ingredients were good quality. Portion size was not disappointing. Service was not quite on par.

Hotel recommended this restaurant and we were pleased they did. Garlic bread with tomato was excellent. Really thin base. I had a risotto which was delicious with big chunks of chicken. Hubby had arribiatta and while spicy also hit the spot. Lovely traditional restaurant.

Excellent quality, we had 3 course, house wine and cafe espresso. Couldn't fault any of it. Service was very good too. Happy with price. Good value for money. We liked the dishes we were served because they weren't swimming in cream and sauce. One could taste the food.

We had the most delicious meal here this evening. A completely authentic Italian restaurant. The food was delicious and although totally full, we were able to enjoy the cannoli in our hotel room! I think this is a hidden treasure just beyond the range of all the tourist traps.

Wonderful Italian food in pleasant surroundings. Risotto di mare and beef stroganoff were both delicious, as was the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Splendid ice cream for dessert. Attentive and occasionally entertaining service.

Our long-standing favourite family restaurant in York is back up and running as well as ever after the ups and downs of COVID. Congratulations to Nando and the whole team, many of whom are new, as are parts of the menu. A true hearty Italian, wonderful service, wonderful ambiance, Nicol the Chef from Italy is literally the best Chef you will find, native to Bari, beautiful Italian home cooked food! We WILL be back!

Excellent food, well presented and absolutely delicious. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection ! The portion sizes for the starters were the same as mains , huge. house wine was recommended and was very nice, the chef here really knows what he is doing, it's all authentic Italian food, the service is very professional yet warm and personal, the desserts were also absolutely delicious. 5 stars from us and we shall definitely be back.
