We stayed for bed and breakfast here. The house is in a beautiful peaceful setting overlooking meadows. Hosts very friendly. Comfortable bedroom. The TV reception is scrambled and there is no phone signal - so I would recommend enabling WiFi calling on your phone and bring a book 😃

Lovely setting and excellent sandwiches and cakes at sensible prices. We had passed Lowther House and its the Tea Garden on numerous occasions in the past but always found them closed. The new proprietors appear to be making every effort to provide walkers and visitors with an opportunity to sample their hospitality. There is easy access for all and has car parking within a few metres for those who have difficulty in walking. The afternoon tea which is available if pre booked looked wonderful and reasonably priced. Garden is dog friendly which is a big plus for us.

We returned and had a wonderful birthday break here. The hosts were wonderful, friendly and helpful. Lowther is set in the countryside about 20 mins walk from Pickering Town centre and has off road parking. The House is set in lovely gardens with a stream running at the side and the steam train can been seen in the distance. You can be at peace in the garden which our bedroom overlooked, try their wonderful cakes. The breakfast is lovely and a good choice.

We have often walked passed this tea garden on our walks in the wood and decided today was the day we would stop and have a drink. We had a coffee each and a slice of coffee and walnut cake. It is a lovely garden to sit and relax. Due to Covid-19 there is one way in and one way out. The table we sat at was spotless. The cost was £11.00 and we paid by credit card.

We haven't been away for six months and what with lockdown we were ready for a little break. John and Helen were very welcoming, the room we had was very clean and cosy. Very clear guidance around covid-19 policies and we had a fantastic view of the garden and the birds. We booked a table in the evening at a place in Thornton Le Dale. Helen kindly offered to book us a taxi and we got to sit in the wonderful garden before we went out. The breakfast was lovely, fresh fruit and cheese and my partner had the full English, which he enjoyed. It was a nice tranquil place to escape too and we felt Helen and John went over and above to make our stay enjoyable and relaxing. We even got to see the steam train in the morning. The only issue is we wish we could have stayed another night. We will recommend this place to friends and family and we hope to return too.

After a 2 hour walk we were looking forward to some great food in the garden and arrived at 14:30 which was 90 minutes before they close. The garden had a number of guests eating with a few tables empty with plenary of room to ensure good distancing. We looked at the menu whilst being observed by a lady who could also see us pick a table. Then out of the blue she said “ I am not serving anymore I have had a busy day”. In business a busy day in my book is good news and even if they were running out of some items could easily has said we now have a limited menu. There were at least 3 signs stating the opening times and she could not even be bothered to apologise for sending us packing. It is interesting that during lockdown when they were serving takeaway and were quiet they were happy to take our money. We travelled from Whitby for this walk and timed it around the opening of Lowther House. Never again will we do this, you do not deserve to be in business.

We stayed at Lowther house on a mini break to Yorkshire, after a lot of research I plumped on this B and B, from start to finish it was lovely, very relaxing, clean and comfortable, also quiet the only sounds were the birds and the occasional train horn from the near by steam trains, Helen and John were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was plentiful and nicely cooked. We hope to visit again. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Found this by chance on walk upstream through woods from town. Tea garden attached to b and b establishment. A few tables under covered pergolas set in delightful garden. Short but imaginative menu. Three of us all had something different and all meals delicious. Staff welcoming and friendly., even gave us dog biscuits for our doggy companion. They also do afternoon tea. Definitely on our "go there again" list.

Several tables under covered pergolas or umbrellas, fleecy throws on offer for cooler days. Good sized portions of imaginative dishes. Dog friendly with what looked like complimentary dog treats. Woodland walks from the door. Steam railway just one field away with good views of the trains.Only open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10 till 4pm I think. Stiving for peace and tranquility in the tea garden so only well behaved dogs, children and adults welcome

We were staying in the Railway cottages nearby, and whilst on a walk found Lowther's by pure serendipity. How glad were we? This is a magic place, on the side of a beck, beautiful gardens, beautifully furnished and shade provided by canopies and umbrellas. The proprietor, John, who was charm personified and a lovely man took our order, with much laughter, and when it came it was like being back in 1970. Proper coffee in a proper cup, with Royal Staffordshire china, Viner's cutlery and cakes that truly were homemade. I opted for the Coffee and Walnut cake, and it was very obviously extremely fresh - about 2 hours before, apparently. My wife had a scone (Skoan or Skonn?) with fresh homemade jam and butter, both served in proper china dishes - not a sachet in sight. The peace and quiet was broken only by birdsong and train whistles in the distance, where you could watch history glide by in clouds of steam and smoke. Positively idyllic. I could almost imagine a white rabbit with a pocket watch rushing past. John is a true professional in his field and a great baker to boot. Helen, his wife was a lovely lady, full of wit and humour. Another good reason for going back Oop North!! You really have got to go!

We had Lowther House recommended to us for a light lunch. We weren't disappointed! The owners were so helpful, helping us to make our decisions and explaining the various things on the menu. Between us we had a selection of soup, quiche, salads and a sandwich - all very delicious and quite filling. I'm not sure how, but we all managed a piece of cake afterwards! There was a great selection of cakes which we all enjoyed immensely! It was a lovely day so we enjoyed our lovely lunch in the garden. There were quite a few people also eating in the garden but it wasn't overcrowded, each table has it's own space. We will definitely return!

My partner had previously stayed here last year and came home telling me it was excellent so we decided to book here this year for 1 night initially as the B & B didn't have 2 consecutive nights. I was not disappointed. The B & B/Tea Rooms are run by John and Helen, who are very welcoming and friendly. It is a very charming, quaint cottage, set along a public right of way in lovely woodland and meadows, having it's own well maintained mature garden with terrace, with a brook running right next to it.Upon arrival, we were greeted by John and Helen and shown to our room. There was a complimentary tray, with homemade cake made by John which you can choose to have out on the terrace while listening to the brook and watchng/listening to the steam trains and also a wonderful array of birds. The room was which was nicely decorated, very clean and comfortable with lovely views over the brook and meadow.Breakfast was excellent and hearty and with a good choice. We left after breakfast promising to return in the future and went on to stay in Whitby for a couple of nights but I was so taken with the place we phoned the next day to book a room for our 4th night away, which my partner was more than happy to agree to.To say this is a wonderfully relaxing place to stay and John and Helen are perfect hosts are really understatements and we would not hesitate to return or to recommend. Thank you John and Helen for a wonderful stay.

Autumn is a good time to visit Lowther House. We were given a warm, spacious room that overlooked Pickering Beck and the garden. The owners provided homemade ginger cake, shortbread and a little guide to the birds you might see from the window. This kind of attention to detail made our one-night stay wonderful. We decided to have our evening meal at the house, which was a very good decision. Helen and John provided a delicious 3-course meal. The dining room is cosy, intimate and we felt at home. When dessert came, we spoke to Helen about the house, its history and how they came to own it. It felt good to be enjoying excellent food and company in this beautiful old house with a misty, autumn night outside. The following morning, we had an equally tasty breakfast; the full English set us up for walking on the coast later on.Helen and John are warm hosts; very attentive and interesting. They care about their house and their guests a great deal. We would love to return.

We stayed overnight in our motorhome beside Lowther House b&b and had lunch in their beautiful tea garden. With Pickering Beck babbling along one side of the garden and the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway chuffing past across the field you could not ask for a more delightful spot on a sunny autumn afternoon. The business has recently changed hands and new owners could not have been more welcoming. The food is all home made: the lasagne was delicious and accompanied by an inventive side salad; the chunky vegetable soup was very tasty (based on butternut squash) and contained more vegetables than I could count! Both dishes were served with chunks of crusty bread. We lunched late so had no time to fit in afternoon tea later on - a shame since the cakes and pie on offer were very tempting. This is definitely a place to go back to for a peaceful meal or an overnight stay.

We came here following a recommendation by friends. Unless you know it's there you'd probably miss it. Located just outside Pickering, follow the road out of the town from the NYMR station, it's on your right up a small driveway, just before the level crossing. On the day of our visit the weather was glorious. We were able to sit in the garden by the river and overlooking the railway. We saw two trains slowly pass by. The food is not run of the mill. We had a BLT, and a bacon with Brie and cranberry sandwiches. The bacon and Brie was wonderful, very tasty. Both sandwiches were served on fresh rustic bread. The food isn't inexpensive at £6 ish each, but take into account the location and food quality then you get what you pay for.

We chose the Middleton arms after seeing pictures of the gammon steak on Facebook, unfortunately this was sold out on the evening we went along with a few other dishes on the menu. I ordered the potato skins starter which came as a large portion which I enjoyed followed by Whitby scampi, this was average with frozen scampi. My wife had garlic mushrooms for starter which was okay, for main she had steak pie which she said was very nice.

Having been to the Stapleton Arms at Wass on many occasions and even been shown the bedrooms, 4 of us booked B&B and evening meals. I booked online 2 rooms. The 'Superior' room £150 per night and the other £100. However, we were not aware the venue had changed hands but it almost immediately became apparent. The stairs leading to the bedrooms looked very tierd and unhoovered. The landing and our bedroom stank of burnt fat and the rooms were very basic and on opening the wardrobe I found empty drink bottles. The door to the shower had black rising up it and the shower just ran like a tap.. Our meal was fine and our friends ordered a bottle of champagne which cost £70 which we were happy to pay but when the bill for the meal arrived it was altogether £340. They had even charged extra for a blob of icecream on my pudding as they said icecream was an extra. Next morning we met at breakfast only to discover that our friend staying in the 'Superior' room, one of whom is very seriously ill and this was supposed to be a treat during a break from treatment, found the shower was not working and they couldn't find a shaving ;point. Just to add insult to injury one of our party ordered a poached egg and when it arrived the toast was burnt black on the underside and my bacon was floating in fat. Had it not been for the fact that one of our party was very ill and we didn't want to make a fuss we paid up the bill and left. Not once did the manager ask us if everything was o.k. He was totally uninterested. What a nightmare stay. Never again, The next morning I phoned to speak to the owner but she was not at work but would ring me on the Thursday of that week. She never rang. I rang back a week later and was told the owner had been given my complaint and she would ring me but another weerk later I have received no response. I suppose she is £600 better off and we will never grace their doors again.

A small place but with a great amount of choice of food and drink. I always get the barbecue chicken and bacon panini because it’s extremely delicious. There’s a good amount of filling in the panini; it’s packed with barbecue flavoured chicken, bacon and cheese. I like the seating outside viewing the town.
