This barn was pretty much abandoned the last time I walked this way some 20 years ago. Discovering a walker's cafe was a very welcome surprise. Good cakes, excellent coffee and an excellent variety of local ice cream. Yas was a friendly and polite hostess, who also told is the best vantage point to see Scalehow Force on our walk back to Patterdale. Its isolated location means you're unlikely to go out of your way to visit, but do stop if passing. There are good views over Ullstwater from the outside tables, and welcome shelter inside it it's raining.

I am lucky enough to live in the Lake District, and to have a cafe that provides such great food in such a wonderful place and not charge the earth is very rare. The location is isolated so please bear this in mind, the selection is not extensive and they will run out on busy days, but the sausage rolls and scones are reason enough to walk here, and a cup of great coffee to superb. Forget piddling little sausage rolls these are door stopping slabs of delicious sausage meat and flaky puff pastry, they will fuel you to the end of your walk. P.S. I have no links to this establishment.

Half way along the Ullswater walk from Patterdale to Howton to catch the ferry back to Glenridding is the Lowther Barn Café. It is literally inside a barn and you almost walk straight past it. This would be a mistake as they have the best cream teas, scrumptious sausage rolls, cold drinks, tea and coffees, plus other delightful light meals. The pair of young ladies operating the café are really lovely; although perhaps there was a 3rd in the kitchen, but they were very obliging and the place is immaculate.

Does this place need yet another 5 star review? Yes, to make up for the couple of bad reviews which seem completely unfair. One reviewer complains about the opening hours - its very easy to check on-line before you go, kind of obvious thing to do when planning a trip to a place in the midddle of the fells. Another bemoans the lack of a window on the lake side but then provides his own explanation - I would guess that the Lake District planners wouldn't allow you to put in any windows that weren't in the original barn so that is how it is, for the view you have to eat outside. I found it very welcoming and had the best sausage roll and scone I have had for ages. If it is not the only cafe actually in the middle of a fell walk it must be the best. If you are in the area - pop in, you won't regret it. What a shame they have to shut for the winter.

We had decided to undertake the 6.5 mile Lakeshore Walk from Howtown to Glenridding and after leaving the steamer at Howtown we set off on the four hour hike. Along with the amazing views and superb weather we met various groups of walkers along the way, one set happened to mention a tea room so we kept our eyes open. When we came across Lowther Barn we were pleasantly surprised and very pleased knowing a warm drink and some food was on the cards. We were welcomed in by the ladies even though we were covered in mud and we took our time choosing hot chocolates, scones and sausage rolls which were all absolutely lovely. The free WiFi allowed us to upload some of the beautiful pictures we had taken and check our route onwards. Overall this is a lovely find halfway along an amazing walk and I can imagine in summer it would be packed out. Part of me would have liked more choice ( to enable me to give it 5 stars) but I know we visited in the quiet season so the range has probably been reduced. We would absolutely go back and make it part of our plan if we did this walk again. Great little business and I hope it stays around and thrives!

The local farming family who own this were warm, friendly and lovely. In addition to top quality teas, cakes, coffees and soups my husband rather longingly spotted some rather awesome looking sausage rolls coming out of the oven as we left. They even had WiFi. You would think that you would walk inside this beautiful stone cottage and find joy and coffee. Not so. A token nod to glorious Ullswater itself with the merest postage stamp of a window. Instead, on that wall, a huge TV playing something akin to soft porn at decibels. I would have asked to have it turned off, were it not for the vibes from the staff. We should have gone outside and drunk the barely adequate coffee in the rural courtyard. But shouldn't have to. I imagine the planning consent process would have been tough, and provisioning on foot the hidden away gem would be tough. All the more reason to make it special, which it currently ain't. Or is, but for entirely the wrong reasons. The scones were good though. Cold comfort.

Beautiful little tearoom, in an amazing position overlooking the lake, and at just about the halfway spot between Howtown and Patterdale, had a very welcome brew and scrumptious home made cake on our walk, with very welcoming service, it was difficult to drag ourselves away!

Stopped here mid-run along the lake shore. Have passed it many times and on this occasion succumbed to its apparent charm. Really is a stunning spot for a cafe stop and views from tea garden are gorgeous. Staff member on duty however was luke warm and monosyllabic. Unfortunately the moderately expensive coffee was also luke warm. No prices on display, or menus available. Bit of a disappointing experience really, and next time shall just run on by.

Lovely little cafe in a remote location - the place has been very well restored inside and I can definitely recommend the fruit scones with jam and cream. Can't wait to go back next time we are in the area.

Location on the walk from Howtown to Glenridding has stunning views. It's a very welcome stopping place on the route. The cakes are delicious and freshly made. The drinks are good quality and served piping hot by friendly owner/ staff. They also serve full English breakfast and lunches. Good prices too. This out of the way business deserves to succeed. Don't walk past, stop and have a cuppa and a snack, you won't regret it.

We can't express our utter delight when we happened upon this tearoom after two hours of hiking around the lake in Ullswater. We had tea and a homemade cherry scone (yum!) served by two delightful, hospitable women. There was reggae music playing, beautiful views, and pretty decor. If you are passing through this area, do stop for tea!

We walked from Glenridding over to Howtown and came across this very welcome oasis. It was a lovely surprise to come Croatia after about 2 hours after leaving Glenridding. Nice staff really friendly and gorgeous scones. It's quicker to get there from Howtown!! But make the effort

We happened upon lowther barn after a few days hiking and decided to ditch the tent for one night for a comfy bed and bath, luckily the lovely girl in the tea room said they had one room free for £75 so we took it, the room was modern, clean and fresh with added extras such as shampoos and bubble bath and plenty of tea and coffee and free wifi, we were asked what we would like for breakfast and kindly went to locally source our choice free of charge, also was given cakes and sausage rolls again free, they really went the extra mile and deserve to do well as it solely relies on walkers to stay and also use the tea rooms, we will be returning

A must place to stop during the walks. Great service lovely food and drink enough to refuel. Accommodation available book in advance. We stayed at the lakeside cabin with its fantastic location on the Ullswater. Hot chocolate with the works and homemade scones recommended.

We had no idea the cafe existed but imagine our joy whilst on a walk from Howtown along the shores of Ullswater and back over the fells. It was a pretty wild day, rain, hail and occasional sunshine when we happened across Lowther Barn Cafe. Although quite small, maybe 5 tables plus outside seating... Not today.... It was warm and comforting with a small but delicious menu and reasonable prices. The girls staffing it were very helpful and happily chatted away with us. One of them was stranded there for 5 days. It is worth the walk from Howtown just to enjoy it. If you have a dog it must remain outside, be aware if the weather is poor

There is a walk from How Town to Glenridding that is just about as perfect as any walk gets. Its assisted by the Ullswater steamers. You can take a steamer to How Town and pick up the steamer back from Glenridding. We did this on a sparkling Autumn day. Half way along the walk, without any obvious reason is the Lowther Barn Cafe. Its a lovely converted barn. Delightful inside and great views outside. They serve great coffee and fresh cakes. We had scones still warm from the oven. Its the sort of place that you struggle to believe is there. Its a place to savour. It would be criminal not to.

What a welcome surprise to find a lovely coffee shop with fab cakes half way along our walk between Howtown and Patterdale. Outside seating has fabulous views overlooking Ullswater. Overnight accommodation looks inviting, especially having to arrive by a farmers quad vehicle. Will definitely consider for our next stay.

We have just got back from a walk along Ullswater and stumbled across this lovely new teashop, what a treat! We had tea and warm, freshly made scones, which couldn't have been nicer. It is in such a perfect spot overlooking the lake, right in the middle of the walk from Patterdale to Howtown. We shall definitely pop in again next time we do this walk, its just perfect. I'm sure it will be a great success.

Situated between Howtown and Patterdale along the lakeside footpath. A brilliant little stop off for a cuppa or even a light lunch. Very reasonable prices and all clean and new. It's gong to need support from walkers to survive and thrive; had I have known it was there I wouldn't have bothred with a packed lunch.Access from the Steamer pier at Howtown or from Patterdale. I hope that it works out for them!

The soup was homemade, and was as good as I have tasted anywhere. I was so impressed that I asked the staff to pass my comments on to the chef.

This is a newly opened cafe on the eastern shores of Lake Ullswater. It is only accessible on foot, about two miles from the steamer stop at Howtown. It is modern, fresh and clean with friendly service. Near to a stunning waterfall and with views over Ullswater, it is perfect for a stop at any time of the day from breakfast to lunch and afternoon tea. There was tasty food served on pretty plates and the choice would suit any taste. It was a real treat on a seven mile walk.We sat outside in a sheltered spot bathed in sunshine, it was truly magical. It's quite an undertaking for the owners and we wish them well. As we walked in for lunch, fresh scones had just come out of the oven and delicious tray bakes were on view.Certainly a good reason to do the walk again!Scrummy with stunning views!

Stayed here for one night as a last minute break, this was one of only a few places left available in the lakes area at the time,at 1st i thought it was gonna be too far out of the way for anything but im so pleased we stayed there. The place is in a lovely little village and the pub itslef is very cozy with a log burner and a real retro bar full of character, the staff work very hard and nothing was any trouble esp the scotch guy,he never stopped. I wouldnt hesitate to book again,we had a great night and returned home feeling recharged and refreshed.

We recently stayed on a two night Travelzoo deal. The hotel is finished to a lovely stylish clean standard. The pub food was lovely, fresh and tasty. We did find it a little steeper price wise to what we are familiar with. The room was nicely finished and comfortable. The light did pour through the window when cars drove past at night and also under the door from the hallway which kept me awake. The radiator in the room was technical and it wouldn’t come on so we were happy to have an electric heater too. Breakfast was continental, it was nice but we felt it was missing some meat and maybe more exciting cheeses. The coffee was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful but out of the three we dealt with we felt one of them wasn’t so professional and sincere. Shouting things to the kitchen before the door was closed and generally a bit rude. The check in /out times were a touch late/early. Otherwise well done Dukes head and travelzoo too.
