What an amazing day we had at the Barley Mow. This lovely little village pub has had a make over and has a warm welcoming feel to it. Great food and the service was excellent. With no less than 5 largers on tap and just as many ales and bitters, there is something for everyone. My favourite is the Guinness that is super cold and probably the best I have tasted in a long time. A great atmosphere and a very friendly crowd watching the football on Sunday. If you haven't been to the Barley Mow in Oakley yet, give it a go, the food menu is great and lots of different drink to choose from. Thank you again David and all the staff at the Barley Mow ( Oakley)

Where to start. On the face of it this pub has had a complete refresh and by and large looks good. The menu is fine and the actual food was more or less what one would expect from a pub chain business. On one side of the small building is the restaurant and on the other a bar with tv showing sport. An open doorway between the two would be fine except that the noise from the pub was at a level that no one could hear themselves speak in the restaurant. There are several sports bars in Basingstoke already. If the Barley Mow is going to succeed the owners need to decide if they want restaurant clientele or loud, obnoxious and rowdy ‘East Bank’ football fans. The two don’t mix. It was quite appalling and the staff seemed oblivious which made it clear nothing has really changed in this establishment.

stopped for some lunch - ordered fish finger sandwich which was on the menu as being served in toasted farmhouse bloomer. Service was slow - when food arrived the fish fingers were in slice white toasted bread. When queried with staff they checked with the chef and was told they had “run out” of bloomer. This should have been made clear before ordering. Very disappointing sandwich - very small and tasteless fish fingers. Shame

My wife and I had lunch here on Friday, in the restaurant section. It's a nicely decorated, spacious area. Service was very good, and the food was excellent. They have a lunch menu, but you can also choose from the main menu. I'd say that the dishes we had - chicken schnitzel and Vietnamese curry - were a cut above many of the meals we've had in other pubs. There is a good selection of drinks available.

Booked online prior to arriving with my girlfriend for a couples meal. When we arrived, a few of the tables were dirty with food / mess from previous people and the staff hadn’t wiped them down, just left there. The waitress then told us they had almost 70% of the menu unavailable! We specifically came for the Roast.. they could have called us before we made the journey over to let us know! We left and went somewhere else.Won’t be coming back or recommending.

We had my Father in Law's wake at the Barley Mow yesterday. From the time of booking David Van der Laan took all the stress away dealing with the menu and keeping me informed of any changes. The staff were all so helpful and friendly and our family and friends were all made to feel very welcome. The food was amazing and our friends and family commented on the quality of the food. Nothing was a problem from start to finish. Thank you so much to everyone at the Barley Mow for making what was a very sad day into a much more comfortable day. Darren and Tracy Ryder

This is a great hidden GEM ! People are quick to pick up on the small things or things which may be out of staffs control probably just want discount from what I’ve been reading . The staff are great ! The food is lovely pub grub ! Been 2 times over the last month once on a busy occasion which my food took a little while to arrive but when it did it was very nice and well presented. We also received free table snacks which were a bonus on our last visit. Standards could be a little better however room for improving seems to getting done. Dave the owner great job keep it up 👍

This should be so nice , a pub in a lovely village but it is awful! Went in withbyhe family to have a few drinks and food but as drinks so painful we didn’t risk food. No lemon for gin and tonic , no fruit in a pims , ages to get served! Beer garden with tables covered in bird Pooh and grass that has not been cut in a long time . Glasses for drinks were dirty and one chipped! One of the ladies serving dropped some food and just left where dropped so good to step in fish cake on the way out and waste attracting insects. This pub should be a delight but I strongly recommend you avoid.

We had started to use the Barlow Mow to meet up with friends and to eat on Thursday evenings. We decided yesterday (Friday) to pop in for a drink at around 19:00. The smell hit us as we walked in the door, it would be best described as a combination of dog and sweat. Now I don’t mind dogs, but this was enough to stop you in your tracks! The bar was the worst area, almost overpowering, but even the restaurant area smelt. We bought our drinks and went and sat in the beer garden where the smell was a subject of conversation and ridicule on many of the tables, with people debating over who was the unlucky one to have to go inside to get the next round. Such a shame as since the last change of management, the Barley Mow had seemed to have set a good standard. Please wash the floors, stop letting dogs sit on the furniture, and throw open the windows and doors to let some fresh air in the place. Until it improves, there is no way we will be returning to eat.

I booked the Barley Mow through Open Table and that is where the hint of a disastrous evening should have alerted me!! I booked via the Open Table site for 7.30pm on Saturday. I received two emails from Open Table, one for a booking at 7.30pm and another for a booking at 6.15pm. Nervous that this could go wrong I rang the pub direct but could never get through. The phone rang out of several occasions. Eventually I got through, two days before the date, and spoke to a lady. To say she seemed vacant would be an understatement; she did eventually confirm we were booked in as a table of four for 7.30. When we arrived, the restaurant area had table names, which we were soon to find out were the names of the music quiz teams attending that night for the music quiz that we were told can get very loud. There was no table reserved for us in the restaurant of the bar. Whilst we were waiting for a lady to come back to us, after arriving at the pub and seeing we had no table, one of the bar staff almost ‘demanded’ I attract the attention of two girls who were playing on the fruit machine, as he couldn’t attract their attention from behind the bar, so he could then tell them they were underage and should not be playing. Not sure why he couldn’t emerge from behind the bar himself!! The lady arrived after three minutes to tell us that she had only just started her shift, her manager was not there, no one could find the reserved notices and one had not been put our for us so we had no table. She did offer to ‘squeeze’ us in the restaurant but the music quiz would be going on and it got very loud. Not a place I would go back to.

Thank you to Dave at the Barley Mow for being our host for our Prosecco lunch on Saturday. The menu covered all tastes, prawn cocktail, soup, pork belly bites be careful of the chilli!!! Hot hot hot! And nachos, main was scampi, chicken and bacon burger, hallumi, chicken salad. The Prosecco was plentiful we also had Pimms as an alternative. We ordered the food in advance and that also helped with menu choices. Dave was very accommodating (patient) with us all when we we’re constantly tweaking our menu!! It was great to go out ‘with the girls’ and to have some time together without having to worry about getting home. Overall the day was great value for money. The only criticism was that clearing the plates from the table was slow…. But we just put them on an empty table! This did not affect our lovely lunch… we need to support what we have in our village and Dave is open to suggestions. Personally I can’t wait until the next one!!! We had a great time, try it!

Visited for Sunday lunch following positive reviews now under new management. We were not disappointed. Food was delicious, generous portions, plenty of gravy and all freshly cooked. Thanks to Vicky for looking after us whilst the restaurant was very busy. Only comment would be that they need an extra pair of hands during busy periods. We’ll definitely be back 😊

Really happy to see that this wonderful place has returned to 'The Barley Mow' following the much welcomed departure of the previous cook. Unfortunately this fantastic website has been used for the purpose of damage limitation to his reputation rather than writing genuine reviews for us to share. Had a great birthday lunch here with six friends and everyone thought the food was really delicious and great value for the price we paid with drinks. My steak was cooked to perfection and desserts to die for. I would have given 5 stars if the decor was a little more modern! Already booked for a work dinner in November, highly recommended.

I visited "Louis at the Barely Mow" about a year ago and loved it! Great service, wonderful food and pleasant atmosphere. Fast forward to last week..."The Barley Mow" is now serving fish and chips that captain Birdseye would be proud to have in his freezer! They have the unique selling point of a clay pizza oven however the pizza arrived with the dough uncooked, edges burnt and chicken that tasted like it had been rotting for weeks! The chef has moved on and if I find out where he has gone I'll quite happily go and eat in his restaurant. I'll never go back to "The Barely Mow"

I just wanted to say that I popped into this fantastic local pub last night, I did use on a regular basis up until a few months back, and I have to say what a vast improvement in staff etiquette and the food menu since the 'restaurant' was added. I ate once in 'Louie @ the barley' and the food was of an OK standard, I think this restaurant was trying to be a little bit more than it actually was. The huge change of the menu, which is now a great standard of Pub Grub along with the pizza oven and take away menu is a much welcomed and tasty choice! I will definitely be coming back on a regular basis as I once did as the warm welcoming from staff/chef and land lady along with the friendly atmosphere of locals has rejuvenated this pub!! Keep up the great work 'The Barley Mow' and see you soon..

Just to let you all know that Louis has moved on and is no longer the chef at this pub....which accounts for the drop in food standards. Louis made a great start but here but lacked the support to continue. Sorry folks!

Took our friends visiting from Australia for a weekend lunch. Friendly and welcoming staff and lovely large garden. Good atmosphere and very reasonable prices. Sadly let down with below average food for our starters and main course. We enjoyed our evening due to the attentive staff and would return for a drink but not for food.

Decided to give the Barley Mow a try with visiting family. Nice pub with friendly staff. Reasonably priced menu but limited choice of food. Starters were ok but mains were lukewarm and meat was dry and lacking any flavour. We all decided against dessert as the starters and mains were disappointing. Reasonable prices but arrived home hungry and ordered a take away.

My wife and I had a meal here a few months ago and found the food very bland. Having read some of the positive reviews since we decided to give it another try last week. The staff are quite friendly and service was good but again we were very disappointed with the food. If you want an ok meal at a reasonable price give it a try but definitely our last visit.

Had a Sunday Lunch last week and even though there was the full menu and specials board available I opted for the traditional option of Roast Beef and I was more than pleasantly surprised. Best and most tender beef I have had for a long, long time. Everything was excellent and the gravy was something to die for. Extra gravy aplenty. I finished off with a cheese board with homemade bread, biscuits and relish. The cheeses were local british cheeses and the blue was absolutely stunning. Well done chef and staff
