We popped in after having a walk along the canal. We have had cake and coffee here before and it was okay so thought we would try a sandwich… how disappointing! We had a ham sandwich for our little one which was literally two slices of bread with ham - they didn’t include the salad or tortilla chips so asked why and they took it back and brought it out with cucumber and the crisps. The butter was spread so thick I had to take some off. The ham baguette was fine but nothing to write home about. The two coronation chicken baguettes were very bland and had no flavour at all. For £7.25 per sandwich it was very overpriced. We also had drinks… my black americano had no taste at all. Found the staff to be just as u welcoming as last time. Not a great impression for those coming to Whitchurch via canal. We live in town and wouldn’t recommend to anyone other than the setting.

We popped it last week for lunch after reading so many positive reviews on this however I don't understand where these positive reviews come from?! We ordered lunch and drinks. We were served with baguettes with cold meat just slapped in and a really sad side salad. It looked like a child had made it. It really looked himemade but notnin a good way...As for the drinks, they looked the part but were so bland. I don't know what you use for your hot chocolate but you should change supplier. Won't be back. Wouldn't recommend. Nice location and staff were OK but that's not why we were there. It was also so expensive. Was around £23 which is a lot for what it was.

During a walk to Grindley Brook locks near Whitchurch on a chilly but bright Sunday, we called into Lockside for a light lunch. We were greeted very pleasantly by two young ladies who took our order of sausage and bacon baguette and scrambled eggs on toast. When the meals arrived I for one could not believe my baguette, cut in half and stuffed with bacon that was cooked perfectly, with a very tasty sausage on each half, with salad and a handful of doritos. My wife's scrambled egg on toast was also delicious. If I have one tiny criticism, it would be - ditch the doritos and serve the salad with a drizzle of salad dressing, a tiny bit of oil makes all the difference - but that really is it. We simply couldn't fault the food, or the friendly service, and we will definitely be back!

Great location but when I arrived after a long walk with my 3 young children on a hot day and asked about what cold drinks they sell, the staff just pointed at the fridge. They also did not suggest that we might want to sit outside in the shaded garden, which we did not know existed. The people of Whitchurch are so friendly but nobody from the café asked us where we came from, where we are going, if we are ok or any question that would have made us feel welcomed. As I said: Great location, shame about the staff and the lack of genuine interest and care for their customers.

Been coming here for years, when staying with friends locally. went in for an ice-cream to be greeted by rude disinterested staff both young and older who should know better especially if its your livelihood. The two guys that owned it the last time we visited were fantastic, an example of how to run a local shop, café, and visitor destination of what is at a honey pot site.

Stopped off for lunch during a canal boat holiday. The latte was very good as was the ice cream however the sandwiches were not great quality, for example the smoked salmon and crème fraiche had little smoked salmon and the bits it did have were browny cuts in and even less Creme fraiche with stale bread, accompanied with a salad that had no dressing and only 4 crisps!

We cycled to the cafe after a day exploring the area and were looking froward to our visit based on the good reviews. Sadly we were left feeling rather let down. We arrived a good 20 minutes before closure to be told that they were only doing "take aways". This involved coffee/tea in paper cups and cakes in paper containers sat amongst the wasps on the benches outside. Perhaps they had had a busy day and wanted to be off home as soon as they could but as customers it might have been nice to have thought that perhaps we would be important to the business. That seemed to be what their sine outside suggested,As for what be had. My chocolate cake (vegan and pretty nice) came without the requested cream and my black coffee came with added milk.Other than that I can not fault it.

Came here for breakfast having moored our canal boat on the nearby public moorings. We chose a table inside and ordered bacon and sausage baguettes. My husband did get a bit of a shock when they came with salad and balsamic dressing, (not usual for a bacon sandwich up north). We stopped here during a long journey having found the cafe on trip adviser. The location is great and the kids enjoyed watching the canal boats pass by. We ordered a few simple breakfast bits - toast, sausage, bacon etc etc. The service was a bit on the slow side and the staff didn’t seem particularly happy to see us - normally people in smaller places make a bit more of an effort especially with kids(?)The food came and it was all a bit cheap tasting with and looked like it had been thrown together. By the time we came to pay I’d have rather we hadn’t bothered and had just gone to a supermarket cafe. Bit of a shame because it’s a great spot, an independent business and the simple things would have made all the difference. We’ll probably drive by next time... sorry

For several years this has been one of our favourite local cafes but sadly this is no longer the case. Our last two visits have been disappointing so today will be our last. 3 coffees and a toasted tea cake took nearly an hour to arrive. During this time we sat at a table covered in dirty crockery and cutlery. The waitress brought out orders visiting each table to see if what she had was for them - there seemed to be no system in place. She had a ridiculously small tray so could only carry a small amount of food and seemed unable to clear tables. When she eventually delivered our drinks she took a small amount of the previous occupants used crockery but the rest remained on our table throughout our visit. We are very surprised that no tables were cleaned or sanitised during our visit. It seems basic hygiene seems to have been abandoned whereas most other places have increased their cleaning measures.Sad to see a business deteriorate like this - simple things like acquiring a bigger tray, buying and using some anti bacterial spray and sanitiser and introducing a system of organising orders/delivering to tables would great improve what should be enjoyable cafe in a great location

Visited here today as it was recommended by one of friends, however we certainly will not be returning.Food looked like it was thrown on the plate.Bacon looked like it had been cooked for seconds only. Toastie wasn’t really a toastie as it was pretty much bread still. Came with tortilla chips, if that’s what they were. Think I had 3 whole ones the rest were just crumbs and bitsAgain salad was just thrown on with a bit of brown lettuce.Terrible customer service, no track and trace system in place. I also find it disgusting that these businesses are taking peoples money for food and drink but expect them to go without using a toilet using the excuse “it’s out of service” apparently half of the country’s toilets are now out of service. Truth is they can’t be bothered to keep on top of the cleaning, besides after what I witnessed the outside area was dirty, twice the young girl came out and walked straight past dirty dishes, thought she would of cleared them away given the current situation before other people sat there. Not overly cheap either for what you get, not impressed and certainly won’t be wasting my time or money here again.Better off going to the horse and jockey which is literally a stone throw away from there. I would of thought these local business would be doing everything in their power to maintain their customers. Clearly not the case here!

Apparently this cafe has been owned by the same family for 15 years; judging by our visit today it wont last much longer. We had a sausage and bacon baguette and a cheese and onion toasty, The baguette was atrocious. The sausage looked as if it had been cooked in tepid water - it was pale and uncooked. We sent it back to be cooked properly and when it returned, it was with the same bacon (also limp and pink) which was cold. It was dreadful and tasteless and no, we didnt eat it. The cheese and onion toasty looked great but was bland and uninteresting. Mature cheese would have worked well. This place gives the impression it uses the cheapest available raw products and they certainly don't understand how to cook even basic food well. The tea and hot chocolate were ok though. Most people were having hot drinks and cake. I dont blame them. I have no idea if the cakes are home-made but they dont look like it. Apologies if Im wrong. Such a shame as the location is quite interesting. This could be So much better. I wont be going again.

Very disappointed with this visit. We booked one hours parking, paid £2, thinking this would be ample time to have breakfast and get back to the car. We came in and had to ask to be seated. We’re then told by a gentleman that was cleaning a four seater table that he didn’t have a table for 3. We then asked if the table he was cleaning was reserved, to which he said no. We then asked if we can have that table, he then replied yes. We were sat down for 30 minutes before anyone came and took our orders. We were sat inside, the environment was VERY noisy, there was NO soft furnishings to absorb the noise. Even curtains on the windows instead of blinds would make a massive difference. The noise level was attrocious. There was a queue out the door the entire time we were waiting for our food with people waiting to be seated. They were not being greeted and being ignored by multiple members of staff. A lot of them left having not had any customer service at all. We were eventually seen to after a family came in after us and we’re sat down eating before us. After 15 minutes of us ordering our drinks and food we felt very forgotten about and asked for our drinks. The waitress did NOT apologise for our long wait and said she would go and get the drinks now but before that would take the orders of the new table that has just came in and been seated. As we left the waiter that seated us to the table said “cheers guys”, which we thought was very rude as we had just got up to leave without having any drinks or food and this shows the waiter was oblivious to who was being served what. This also proves the point that he thought we were in there enough time to be sat down, decide what to have, have food and drinks, pay and leave. The general atmosphere of the restaurant was FRENETIC CHAOS. I will be thinking twice before I go here again for the forseeable future. Very disappointing.

Having previously eaten here and enjoyed it so much, today we (my husband & I ) thought we’d repeat the occasion. But no, it was not meant to be. We both went into the shop to place our order at 2pm approx., and yes the two staff working were busy, we could see & appreciate that, but if only we could have had some acknowledgement from them. Being totally ignored by both of them (noted that one was making up a pudding order), for what seemed like an age, (5-7 mins) does not make you feel good. Just having some acknowledgement and using words like ‘we’ll be with you in a minute’ would have made such a difference. We felt so rejected that after a time we turned round and walked out, shame because we have enjoyed eating here in the past. It’s just good basic customer care.

So disappointed! We are a group of 9 walkers. Called in to ask if we bought drinks could we please eat our sandwiches outside. So surprised to be refused especially as there was not one person in the cafe and no one sitting outside on the 9 or so picnic tables. Not surprised it was deserted!

Giving a star rating can be tricky. The lovely young lady running the cafe when we were there was 5 star.

Can’t understand why this place is so well recommended, no a pleasant experience for me. The place gives a first impression of being tired. Needs redecorating and new furniture, not good. Food well below par not very tasty, cottage pie just tasted “flat,” surely it is not too difficult to put on a really tasty dish as simple as this. Nachos as an extra with most things it seems and the salad, just limp. Sorry, expected better.

Stopped off to have breakfast on a lovely sunny late September morning. Good traditional breakfast and a really fresh cheese baguette. Staff were friendly and what a treat to sit outside and watch the canal boats negotiating the locks, we were lucky to watch them going both ways. Would definitely recommend.

My fiancé and I stopped here for coffees, and enjoyed sitting out on the terrace, watching the canal & locks. You can combine your visit with a canal walk or bike ride. This is a great find.

Well two boats actually. This cafe is next to a series of locks and as it was very warm we sat outside where there are plenty of bench tables and smaller tables and chairs ( more seating inside and in the rear garden). Run by nice people who have customer service foremost in their operation. It is on A41 just outside Whitchurch and you would miss it if you are not looking! The cafe looks small but it isn't in terms of capacity. The cafe looks basic but get closer and you will see it is not. Even the toilets are pleasant and clean. Oh and the food! Excellent and reasonably priced and they serve tea in a teapot! I had one of the best bacon and sausage baguettes ever and my wife enjoyed her shepherd pie. Pity we had no room for reasonably priced cakes and artisan ice cream. Don't worry about its unassuming appearance as everything else is perfect.

Visited with my husband whilst passing through, as we were looking to somewhere to stop for breakfast we thought we would give it a try due to its location.

Stopped here during a lovely walk along towpath. We were very hot and looking to have lunch in a nice setting and watch the boats on canal. Unfortunately when we went to place our orders they would not accept our Scottish Notes so we had to leave, this was very embarrassing.

Found this little gem of a cafe on Trip Advisor & called in for lunch on our way to Chester. What a joy. Independent cafe with freshly made food. It was a lovely day so we sat outside in the garden, watching boats go through the locks. Food & service were great. Friendly staff & competitive prices. Would certainly recommend.

Stopped here and had an enjoyable lunch. Portions were good and food nice. Several boats past through the locks whilst we were here. There is a separate semi-enclosed garden which is good for small children, although you will still need to keep a close eye on them due to proximity to the canal.

Due to the proximity to our campsite, we decided to saunter up the towpath and hopefully have a tasty breakfast here. How disappointing. We weren't offered menus and the staff seemed disinterested and although not overtly rude, made no attempt to say anything when depositing or clearing the food. It was supposed to be a cooked breakfast but turned out to be undercooked sausage and bacon and lukewarm beans and scrambled eggs. The tea and coffee were fine but it was a real shame as we would have returned on another occasion if it was better, especially if the staff could have been more friendly.

WE ONLY STOPPED FOR TEA AND AN EXCELLENT MARSHFIELD FARM iCE CREAM, BUT we noticed lovely cakes and a good lunch menu. the location is perfect - right next to the top locks; the outside tables are shaded, and water (and ICE CREAM) is on hand for dogs (there is many a water-gypsy dog, and lots enjoy walkies along the path with their owners). This place is spotlessly clean, like the toilet and 'washroom' provided for the boating fraternity. the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Food average, nice location, However, we cleared our own table onto the messy table opposite only to sit for the whole duration of our lunch with bees and flies around the mess and near our table. Staff walked by a couple of times and even though I know it was a busy time at lunch they could have cleared the table next to us as they returned to the kitchen.

Gorgeous setting, plenty of seating right on the lockside or shady garden to watch the comings & goings of the locks, lovely staff, generously filled sandwiches & salad made fresh to order - even frozen yogurt made specially for dogs! Lovely walk along the canal with a small woodland treat hidden on the other side of a lovely old bridge - simply perfect lunchtime outing, thank you!

Do not order prawn marie sandwiches. Visited this café a couple of days ago. My sandwich arrived, no sauce but plenty of water! Seriously the prawns must have come from the freezer, and not drained. I tried mopping up the water, bread was soggy. I took it back and a new sandwich was given to me. Prawns still a little wet. Bread smothered in margarine and no sauce. I gave up and left. It was the worse sandwich i have ever eaten.

This is about as good as a Cafe gets. Quirky, bright interior, comfortable, in a great location, and top quality food made with quality ingredients.

We stopped off here after a walk along the canal whilst passing through the area. The location of the cafe is lovely. Unfortunately for us, we visited on a cold, wet day so had to sit inside and watch the barges going through the locks through the window but I can imagine sitting outside on a sunny day would be perfect. The staff were friendly. The cafe was clean with lots of barge/canal related decor and the menu looked good. If I'm ever in the area on a nice day, I'll definitely pay another visit.

Great little cafe with nice cakes and drinks. Staff very friendly. Clean and tidy. We had a cooked breakfast before heading home on last day of our trip and all was good... until we ate the sausages! Quite possibly the worst I've ever eaten. Dry, hard and cardboard like. Please change them to a better quality one. They are letting you down.

A small Lockside canal café (I guess you worked that out already) that offers light lunches, cakes and drinks. You can watch canal boats navigate the locks as you eat, if one happens to come along. Not bad value and the food was nice and most welcome before taking a stroll along the canal. Everything is as you would expect, but the location makes it more memorable.

We stopped here for a bit of late breakfast after it was recommended by a local. The location and facilities cannot be faulted, but the portions are small for what you pay. Perhaps thats to be expected given their position by the canal???

This place has a vast amount of things for children to play on. However don’t expect to get food quick- they have two cage areas but one is never open and the other has a constant huge queue because the staff take forever! Even if you want drinks you have to queue with the food and last time we queued for 25 minutes! Ridiculous when you have children to supervise and feee!

The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

Average food more like a pub, raw onion in the scotch egg bhaji, bang bang cauliflower poor, fish and chips were tiny and fish dry. So over priced for below average food.
