We brought our son here for his graduation a year ago. This time was his master;s graduation, and we came back. The same young, lovely waitress was there to greet us - service is warm and friendly and the food is rich and delicious. It is expensive, but for a special occasion, it was really lovely.

This was our second time dining here as it’s our daughter’s favourite place to dine (she lives in Bristol, we don’t) ! Didn’t disappoint, we shared the guinea fowl for 2 and my daughter and b/f shared the cote du Boeuf, both succulent and tasty. Lively atmosphere, delightful staff. Highly recommend….

The setting is lovely - it looks and feels like a lovely French restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. Myself and my partner both started with the mussels which were delicious and we’d both be happy to eat them again. My main course was medallions of pork tenderloin with prunes and Armagnac on mash potato. While the meat was cooked nicely and was tender, the sauce was very thin and lacked flavour (in a blind tasting, I would not have guessed prunes or Armagnac). The mash was so thin, almost liquid. The combination of the thin sauce and almost-as-thin mash did nothing to excite the palette. It all seemed, and tasted, rather gloopy. My partner has a rabbit dish. It sounded very nice on the menu but, like my dish’ needed more flavour and the meat, in her opinion, needed to have been cooked longer as it didn’t ’fall off the bone’. She had a portion of frites - these were bit disappointing (they were just skinny MacDonalds-like chips). Some nice Dauphinoise or Gratin Savoyarde would have been a better offering. The desserts were fine. We both thought that a Café Gourmande would’ve been a nice inclusion on the menu. The wine list looked ok. We had the cheaper of the two Côtes de Rhônes which was fairly ordinary and an Italian red, which was better (both were around the £35 mark). It’s a the top end pricewise and we expected to be excited by the food but, I’m afraid to say, we weren’t.

I had read some less than favourable reviews before booking but I am so pleased I went ahead and booked. We received a warm and friendly welcome and all the staff were attentive and professional. We have loved France and its cuisine for years and this just felt so authentic. The food is delicious, unpretentious and authentic. There were also French wines that we love. It was a snowy night when we visited and the restaurant was warm and inviting. My husband had sweetbreads followed by venison which was really soft and tender. I had olives and onglet steak. It came with lots of fries which I don’t normally eat but they were delicious! We both had the chocolate mousse, that was absolutely perfect. We can’t wait to book again.

Nice. Expensive, but still good value. Possibly the best scallops we ever had. The steak was huge and good - would've preferred less fries in favour of some greens perhaps. The crème brûlée was excellent and also large! Shows that fine dining can have good sized dishes!

Visited last night on a Monday night, it was busy but a lovely atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and service was good. The food was great, it is good hearty meals. Good portion sizes and very well done. Really tasty ! We both couldn't managed desserts but we left with very full bellies and smiles on our faces and you cannot ask more than that. My only criticism would be the front of house to be more clued up about the menu as questions were referred to the chef but hey that's nothing to worry about as it doesn't really effect your night. Bread Scallops Lamb Sweetbreads Duck breast Rabbit Bottle of wine & water £175 I thought for what we had and the quality it was i was very happy and so was my wife. Will I go back ???? Yes I will and I'll be brining friends. Thanks for a great night guys.

Started off having a lovely meal here with with my friend we had starter of sweet bread and we also had scallops and oysters which were delicious! I had the duck which was amazing and my friend had the rabbit which at the time was succulent and soft. A couple hours later my friend contacted me due to having an upset stomach after the meal. Having not eaten anything else for the rest of the day we have to tell that the only thing we did not share was the rabbit. This is sad of us because it’s such a delightful meal and I hope that this isn’t a repeated thing throughout this business. The service was fantastic mind.

Lovely atmosphere, very busy for a Friday night but I thought the staff coped well. Service was good. Cheese soufflé and scallops were lovely, however I was utterly disappointed by the Guinea fowl. Tastless and absolutely swimming in unappealing juice with a side of what seemed to be frozen fries which my partner also agreed with. I couldn’t eat it and it’s unfortunately put me off ordering any other type of similar game bird any time soon. For an expensive meal and supposedly upmarket restaurant I couldn’t believe this was how they were serving one of their main dishes. Unfortunately I’d probably have to be convinced to return here again.

I’ll start with service.. exceptional, they got every detail right, friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and efficient. Plus they worked out it was my birthday and gave me a (delicious) chocolate mousse, with a candle. Food was delicious, I’m still debating if it’s the best steak I’ve eaten and if it’s that close who’s worried. We were the first people sat and it did lack some atmosphere at first, but that changed as people arrived. Down sides; it’s toppy on price, it’s small, no space to drink at a bar, but this does add to the exclusivity of the place. About the only thing I found fault with was the table water, some ice would have improved it. When you spend a lot on a meal, you want to be impressed. I was, very picky 4.66 stars

The atmosphere was lovely, and the whole environment just really inviting. Food was exactly what I thought it would be, extremely tasty and well presented. If I had a slight quibble, previous photos I’d seen the dishes looked bigger, we had the scallop and they were very small, however very tasty. Will unequivocally be back again. Great place.

Have been to Little French five times previously but this was the most disappointing. We booked for 7:45pm on a Monday and it was quite busy but not full. From being seated the staff took about 25 minutes to take our drinks order, even serving the table next to us first despite them arriving 10 minutes after. There was limited apology for this. We then ordered food (bread to share followed by the guineafowl to share). The bread ended up coming before our wine did which isn't great. The main course then took ages to arrive, almost to the point I thought we'd been forgotten about. All in, it took 1 hour 10 minutes from when we arrived to get our main course and in that time we had some bread. When the waiter took our plates before the main came he asked "how were your starters" - we'd had a slice of bread!! Food was nice but I thought the sauce with the guinea fowl was a bit bland compared to previous times we have shared that dish. All in for 3 glasses of wine, bread and guinea fowl it was £112 - expect better service when paying those kind of prices. Worst experience so far and not in a huge hurry to rush back.

We've been coming to eat at Little French for several years but we have never been so disappointed with both the food and the service. A young Uni student seemed to be doing most of the waiting work and was great, the manager and others left a lot to be desired. As to the food, half of our guinea fowl for 2 looked raw and undercooked so completely lost any appetite we had. Whilst the manager knocked 50% off the cost of that particular dish, the overall experience was wholly off-putting as we didn't eat most of the main except the fries (which were nice). It feels like Little French has lost its edge and now poor value. We won't be back 😔

Excellent service. Food was very good. The deep fried courgette flower was excellent to start. The cote de boeuf was good but not the best steak I've had in Bristol. The frites and aligot were really nice. The creme brulee and chocolate mousse were both fantastic and big portions. I should note that this place is very expensive, easily the most expensive meal I've had in Bristol outside of a Michelin star tasting menu. Also a little disappointing that they don't take American Express, especially considering how expensive it is. Similar restaurants such as Little Hollows Pasta take Amex. Overall really good meal.

Very disappointed. I ordered monkfish and the size of the portion was honestly an insult no bigger than my finger size! It was a very special day for us and wanted to celebrated at this restaurant as the first time we went last year was amazing! I complained and the manager said I am so sorry it is a very expensive fish!!!!! Do you honestly think that should be a response to a client? We come from the Cotswolds and often go to the Dormy House near Broadway, many times have ordered monkfish and I know it’s an expensive dish however the price is very similar but portions completely different. Sadly left the place still hungry! Ah as a compliment they had the hard face to charge us service charge!!!

Recommend by a friend, I was so excited to be having lunch at Littlefrench for our wedding anniversary. Unfortunately I was so disappointed. Starters were OK, ham tasty but quite a few bits of gristle. Mains….over cooked sea bream, undercooked green beans, brown, dry over cooked chips (I could smell old oil coming from the kitchen) and everything was over salted. Stone cold Brie de Meaux with underwhelming sourdough served on a pretty scabby board. Strawberries and cream…meh. I just sensed a real lack of love all round. Such a shame.

Shame I have to leave this type of review being that I ended up cancelling my booking. Seems there's is an extremely pretentious, early 00s Russel Brand lookalike who works at the front desk called Matt who says he is the only management / senior management. When making my booking over the phone, I phonetically spelt my name over the phone twice as I guess I have a slight accent, I was rushed off the phone, then received an email confirmation to a Josh Akbhar (not even close tothe letters in my name). Naturally, I called to ask to resend a new email with my name after phonetically spelling for a third time, again rushed off the phone and I received another email, again spelt incorrectly. I sucked it up but shortly before my reservation, my partner took ill with an allergic reaction to medication. I called to explain and Matt answered, when I tried to give my name for the booking he told me "I know who you are", I explained the situation which he oddly found amusing. When I called to log the a complaint (genuinely a lifetime first) I was told that all complaints must go through him.. The friends that live locally who recommended this place for its food did say staff can be rude. If you're willing to treated condisendlingly by someone who looks like a wedding singer, I've heard this place isnt too bad.

Such a shame. Like a number of other reviewers we had previously had many nice meals here and it used to be one of my favourite restaurants in Bristol. Sadly our most recent meal was dreadful. We went for Sunday lunch as a party of 3. We decided to skip starters in favour of deserts. Service was very slow. The waiting staff no longer explained the dishes, or asked about allergies or asked how we wanted food cooked (despite us ordering steak). I asked what the lamb main course came with and if I needed sides. I was told it came without any carbs so the waitress suggested I order some. It was actually served on mash. The food took forever to arrive but when it did it was undercooked and unbelievably fatty (both the steak and the lamb). I spoke to the waitress who just said sometimes it came like that. I explained that we had had the sharing steak before several times and it had never been served like this. She just said sorry and left. We couldn’t eat much of it and asked for the bill straight after mains because we all felt a bit sick. The total bill was £170+ for 3 mains with soft drinks, no starters (just bread/olives) and no desserts. It took I hour and 45mins just to be served that.

Nice restaurant, but considering the price, I would have expected more from the food. I've also heard great things for a long time so maybe expectations were too high. Feels outdated, but maybe it's just a traditional vibe they're going for. We had heard great things about Little French so when my husband asked me to book a family meal there for his birthday I made sure to book ahead early as I know how busy it gets. Everyone we know who's been told us to get the Cote de Beuf sharer which we did and honestly... I've had better steaks in Bristol. It wasn't consistently cooked- the inside pieces were very raw - a bit too much for my liking. The chips were crispy but very dry and needed a lot of extra salt for a good taste. The thing that disappointed me the most though was the 'cakeage' charge - we were unaware of this beforehand (couldn't see anything on the website) and I had worked really hard on making my husband a homemade cake that he wanted so we could share it with the family but because we weren't ordering dessert the manager said we had to pay a £3 per head charge... so £21 added to our bill for a cake that I had made. Put a bit of a dampener on the meal to be honest but hey ho! The staff however were really lovely and attentive but I won't be rushing back anytime soon.

My main course was ribeye steak which was cooked perfectly but the peppercorn sauce poured all over it was very salty! The mashed potatoes was tasty but runny I had trouble spooning onto my plate. Everything tasting incredible. Thank you to the wonderful staff. @bristolian_foodie

Visited here having been seduced by the rave review on a certain tv programme. We had the beef and the aligot which were very nice. Drinks are reasonably priced and the staff are friendly. The downside was our choice of starters. Crispy fried asparagus was not! Thick batter, greasy. Lamb sweetbreads had a beautiful sauce but that was about it. Couldn’t comment on the sweetbreads themselves as there were only 4 pieces on my plate each no bigger than my little fingernail. Total letdown. Would come here again but would choose more carefully

I was really looking forward to my visit here. The food was good but not quite what I was expecting. It's definitely worth a visit and the scallops were top notch along with the sweetbreads. I would like to try the new restaurant in Clifton.

Perfect meal, lots of nice dishes. Isn't stupid expensive. Everyone loved their meals and the very attentive staff made the experience everything you'd hope for. The pommes aligot were everything I hoped for and more it exceeded my expectations as a whole. Lovely night and meal. We will be back

Food was outstanding. We shared the cote de boeuf and it was amazing! The sides and starters were also lovely. The only slight niggle was the waitress, although lovely, did not come back to us after clearing our mains to offer us dessert or tea/coffee etc, which we found a bit odd. But overall a wonderful restaurant.

Seating/tables are clamped to the floor with so little space between the benches and table that you can hardly breathe if you are plus size. A pregnant woman would absolutely not be able to eat her without requesting one of the few chairs that are movable. A wheelchair user would bring the restaurant to a gridlocked as there is just too many tables crammed in to a small space half of which is taken up with a huge bar area that no one can sit at for lack of room!

I have been here 6 or 7 times now and I love it. The food is fabulous and the service is normally very attentive. The only issue is the horrendous noise from the music which gets played at such a high volume. I have no idea why! People come to a restaurant to talk with their friends and have a quiet chat. This is totally impossible when you are basically sat in the middle of a rock band. Still worth putting up with the noise to taste the delicious food.

Superb experience, called in early one evening on the off chance of a table. We were able to eat as long as we were off the table by 8.00 pm. Scallops followed by a Ribeye, to die for. Worth every penny. Recommend it

The food was spectacular and the wine list extensive. Shout out to Josh. Only complaint is the attractiveness of the waiters, which caused several minor arguments with my husband throughout the evening.

This was our second visit here, the last being some 2.5 years ago when it was excellent. As we were on holiday in the area we booked in advance. Our starters were excellent and we then went for their Cote de Boeuf again. This time it was poor, very fatty and tough compared to our first visit as recommended by Fred Sirieix & Michelle Roux which was excellent. An apology was offered but no discount. We will not return here and our highlight of our holiday which were looking forward to was a disappointment to say the least.

What a wonderful experience, really nice vibe in there. Food was awesome, not cheap, but it was a treat and they made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend the scallops and the Combo of Brandy Alexandre and Chocolate Mouse to finish the meal. The Alexandre is like a refined sexy chocolate Baileys and is pure decadence. An amazing evening for the pair of us.

Generous portion sizes and fantastic ambiance. The build up of the meal from sweetbreads, to rabbit leg, to rum baba was practically Bacchic. Life changing experience.

Booked last year after Michel Roux’s recommendation on Remarkable Places to Eat. We had a 6 night break for our wedding anniversary, 5 nights of which were all fish restaurants in Cornwall & Devon. We wanted red meat after all that fish and chose lambs kidneys followed by cote de boeuf for 2. Lovely bottle of Fleurie to accompany. It was a cold wet day and the restaurant felt chilly, which worried me as I cannot abide lukewarm food. Sorry to say the lambs kidneys were underdone and the texture felt slimy, I cut off a lot of white fat. The flavour was great, but the middle bit (renal pelvis?) was left in. Bit yucky. Cote de boeuf arrived, allegedly medium rare but cold and a bit chewy. Too rare for our taste so asked for it to be cooked a bit more. By this time the hispy cabbage (beautiful) and fries were going cold. Beef was better on reheating, well seasoned and lots of it but still a bit chewy. I would also say the knives need sharpening because I had trouble cutting the sourdough underneath the kidney starter and my husband couldn’t cut through the beef. We are a very reasonable couple, and eat out a lot, but considering the restaurant’s high reputation following Michel Roux’s recommendation, it was a disappointing end to our holiday. We only came to Bristol for this restaurant on our way home to the Lakes. Thought there might be some solid french rustic food such as beef bourguignon on the menu. Our overnight stay at Number 38 Clifton is fabulous though!

Terrible meal - kidneys very fatty, cote de Boeuf cold, chewy and red raw. Regularly have medium/rare however a good vet would have brought this to life. Would not recommend to go anywhere near this place - shocking. Servers try very hard and felt sorry for complaining but the food was the worst we have had on our fortnight trip around the south west. Best thing was a doggy bag to take leftovers for family pet although would not be surprised if he did not eat it. Worst £150 I have ever spent.

A great welcome, with a lovely atmosphere to the place. Cheese souffle was lovely, not too strong but great flavour and nice and light. Great flavour for the Crab Maison, capers and radish were a great compliment. Duck l'Orange simply amazing, succulent, great crispy skin, red cabbage and gratin were simply lovely. Rib eye steak with the cafe de Paris butter, was probably the best steak I've had in awhile, delicious and tender. Both had the Cafe Gourmond dessert which was a great little trio to finish, the highlight being the raspberry macaron, sublime. All finished with a lovely cafe creme, will definitely be back.

I would go here on the odd occasion and it was great every time, yet now it’s awful. They have removed the QR Code Ordering system/ Table Numbers, and in replacement have one waiter who wasn’t helpful at all, didn’t even give a menu. This now means you wait 20minutes to get seated, and then 20minutes to order, when before it would be a few minutes. After I ordered I was then told they ran out of the fish, and was forced to get something else. As for the food - overpriced. They have raised their prices making it extremely expensive, yet the quality and value for money has got worse. In addition, the conveyor belt kept making a squeaking noise, which is very irritating and annoying, making the environment not pleasant. Not going back to this place again, would recommend people not to bother!
