Five stars is not enough for this amazing establishment. It’s one of the best in England. Making green beans to taste this great takes greatness. The fish is super. Steak could be slightly more tender.

Recommend by a friend, I was so excited to be having lunch at Littlefrench for our wedding anniversary. Unfortunately I was so disappointed. Starters were OK, ham tasty but quite a few bits of gristle. Mains….over cooked sea bream, undercooked green beans, brown, dry over cooked chips (I could smell old oil coming from the kitchen) and everything was over salted. Stone cold Brie de Meaux with underwhelming sourdough served on a pretty scabby board. Strawberries and cream…meh. I just sensed a real lack of love all round. Such a shame.

We had really enjoyed a meal here a couple of years ago and decided to return for a special birthday lunch. Just before arriving, I read some recent reviews and got a bit worried. Fortunately there was no need: food was very high quality as previously and now offers slightly more choice. Wine list interesting and extensive. Service friendly, helpful and very efficient. All contributed to a happy, informal atmosphere- full of people evidently enjoying themselves. We hope to visit again soon.

Shame I have to leave this type of review being that I ended up cancelling my booking. Seems there's is an extremely pretentious, early 00s Russel Brand lookalike who works at the front desk called Matt who says he is the only management / senior management. When making my booking over the phone, I phonetically spelt my name over the phone twice as I guess I have a slight accent, I was rushed off the phone, then received an email confirmation to a Josh Akbhar (not even close tothe letters in my name). Naturally, I called to ask to resend a new email with my name after phonetically spelling for a third time, again rushed off the phone and I received another email, again spelt incorrectly. I sucked it up but shortly before my reservation, my partner took ill with an allergic reaction to medication. I called to explain and Matt answered, when I tried to give my name for the booking he told me "I know who you are", I explained the situation which he oddly found amusing. When I called to log the a complaint (genuinely a lifetime first) I was told that all complaints must go through him.. The friends that live locally who recommended this place for its food did say staff can be rude. If you're willing to treated condisendlingly by someone who looks like a wedding singer, I've heard this place isnt too bad.

Freddie needs to spend more time training staff to explain to customers how food is going to be served rather than expanding his business empire. Such a shame. Like a number of other reviewers we had previously had many nice meals here and it used to be one of my favourite restaurants in Bristol. Sadly our most recent meal was dreadful. We went for Sunday lunch as a party of 3. We decided to skip starters in favour of deserts. Service was very slow. The waiting staff no longer explained the dishes, or asked about allergies or asked how we wanted food cooked (despite us ordering steak). I asked what the lamb main course came with and if I needed sides. I was told it came without any carbs so the waitress suggested I order some. It was actually served on mash. The food took forever to arrive but when it did it was undercooked and unbelievably fatty (both the steak and the lamb). I spoke to the waitress who just said sometimes it came like that. I explained that we had had the sharing steak before several times and it had never been served like this. She just said sorry and left. We couldn’t eat much of it and asked for the bill straight after mains because we all felt a bit sick. The total bill was £170+ for 3 mains with soft drinks, no starters (just bread/olives) and no desserts. It took I hour and 45mins just to be served that.

All a bit Emperor's new clothes. Some good things, most poor . £190 for 2 people, order came with items missing/late, stale turned desert wine, unseasoned turbot. Disastrous Souffle Suissesse resembled a flat cheese omlette in split grainy gratin sauce. Overall poor value for money back up with indifferent service.

Nice restaurant, but considering the price, I would have expected more from the food. I've also heard great things for a long time so maybe expectations were too high. Feels outdated, but maybe it's just a traditional vibe they're going for. Also, the table service was nothing to rave about, particularly being given dessert menus and then not being seen for so long that we all decided that it was too late and the moment had passed. Thanks for a decent meal.

We had heard great things about Little French so when my husband asked me to book a family meal there for his birthday I made sure to book ahead early as I know how busy it gets. Everyone we know who's been told us to get the Cote de Beuf sharer which we did and honestly... I've had better steaks in Bristol. It wasn't consistently cooked- the inside pieces were very raw - a bit too much for my liking. The chips were crispy but very dry and needed a lot of extra salt for a good taste. The thing that disappointed me the most though was the 'cakeage' charge - we were unaware of this beforehand (couldn't see anything on the website) and I had worked really hard on making my husband a homemade cake that he wanted so we could share it with the family but because we weren't ordering dessert the manager said we had to pay a £3 per head charge... so £21 added to our bill for a cake that I had made. Put a bit of a dampener on the meal to be honest but hey ho! The staff however were really lovely and attentive but I won't be rushing back anytime soon.

We thought that the decor was lovely suggest mirrors on brick wall as my husband sat facing this. We arrived and ordered Beaujolais which was zingy so the waiter kindly replaced. My starter was Scallops which was tasty but unfortunately a bit gritty! My husband had soufflé which was light but very cheesy. My main course was ribeye steak which was cooked perfectly but the peppercorn sauce poured all over it was very salty! The mashed potatoes was tasty but runny I had trouble spooning onto my plate. My husband had fries which took up half of his plate. Crispy cabbage arrived unexpectedly not sure why it's called this as the cabbage was nit crispy? Very poor and we were very disappointed especially after the TV documentary!

The set menu is incredibly good value BUT I was entertaining clients and was extremely disappointed to be told that anyone who chose anything from the set menu was precluded from ordering a dessert from the full menu at any price. Seating/tables are clamped to the floor with so little space between the benches and table that you can hardly breathe if you are plus size. A pregnant woman would absolutely not be able to eat her without requesting one of the few chairs that are movable. A wheelchair user would bring the restaurant to a gridlocked as there is just too many tables crammed in to a small space half of which is taken up with a huge bar area that no one can sit at for lack of room!

I have been here 6 or 7 times now and I love it. The food is fabulous and the service is normally very attentive. The only issue is the horrendous noise from the music which gets played at such a high volume. I have no idea why! People come to a restaurant to talk with their friends and have a quiet chat. Booked last year after Michel Roux’s recommendation on Remarkable Places to Eat. We had a 6 night break for our wedding anniversary, 5 nights of which were all fish restaurants in Cornwall & Devon. We wanted red meat after all that fish and chose lambs kidneys followed by cote de boeuf for 2. Lovely bottle of Fleurie to accompany. It was a cold wet day and the restaurant felt chilly, which worried me as I cannot abide lukewarm food. Sorry to say the lambs kidneys were underdone and the texture felt slimy, I cut off a lot of white fat. The flavour was great, but the middle bit (renal pelvis?) was left in. Bit yucky. Cote de boeuf arrived, allegedly medium rare but cold and a bit chewy. Too rare for our taste so asked for it to be cooked a bit more. By this time the hispy cabbage (beautiful) and fries were going cold. Beef was better on reheating, well seasoned and lots of it but still a bit chewy. I would also say the knives need sharpening because I had trouble cutting the sourdough underneath the kidney starter and my husband couldn’t cut through the beef. We are a very reasonable couple, and eat out a lot, but considering the restaurant’s high reputation following Michel Roux’s recommendation, it was a disappointing end to our holiday. We only came to Bristol for this restaurant on our way home to the Lakes. Thought there might be some solid french rustic food such as beef bourguignon on the menu. Our overnight stay at Number 38 Clifton is fabulous though!

Lovely little place, nice staff too, since I’ve given up alcohol i really struggle when out to find a nice drink to go with food, i don’t want tonic or coke with food, I do think more adult af drinks should be on offer nowadays, Jasmine sparking tea is a great one with food, light and refreshing, it’s just like a light sparkling wine, so I had to put up with the only adult af drink on offer an ipa, far too heavy with food, I started with the razor clams, the garlic butter they came in was so good (order bread to dip) my clams were a bit were gritty and chewy but the butter made up for this, then my husband and I had the cote de boeuf very tasty but we had a lot of chewy bits which we couldn’t chew through sadly as it tasted good, our friends had the same but less chewy, then I had rum baba… that was nice, my husband and our friends loved the pinot Noir red wine, We’d go back but chose differently food wise… and hope the af drinks improve 🙏 The bill was £571 for the 4 of us, pretty hefty price tag, we paid less at the hand and flowers 2 weeks previous, understand prices are high these days but thought this was over the top, £70 was service charge.

Shown to our table straight away, but it was very cramped with bench type seating. Budget airline rather than business class. Menu looked great. Souffle was poor - not fluffy, more bread like. Had to ask for bread which we expected to be a baguette (french restaurant) but was sourdough slabs. Terrine came in a breadcrumbed case like a croquette - tasty but not really a terrine. Main courses were Cote de Boeuf to share - tough not seasoned well and undercooked. £84.00 ! Rabbit was tough (knocked off the bill ) Skate was very salty. We had to pass our plates to the end of the table as there was no way the waitress could collect them. Bit like being back at school. Very cramped very expensive and overall not good at all. My daughter recommended this restaurant. It is small and I was asked to arrive only 5 minutes before our booking. Unfortunately it was pouring so got a bit wet outside waiting. However it was well worth it. I met up with a best friend from our medical school & we hadn’t seen each other for decades. We all had scallops as a started, then two fish meals and a pork dish. All really tasty and enjoyed. A prune & Armagnac tart for two of us and crème caramel. Friendly attentive service. Great cider, extensive wine list and nice toilets. Total with tip £200 for three of us. Definitely worth a revisit.

My wife and I went for an early dinner on a Saturday, and were surprised to find the place already pretty full (we had booked) and noisy. The restaurant has made good use of limited space, but we were all pretty hugger-mugger, and the noise level made conversation difficult unless we shouted, which we don't. The menu looked interesting, and we both went for crab starters. When these arrived the portions were tiny, I would term it an amuse-bouche rather than a starter, and certainly would not price it at £12 each, reasonably tasty, but nothing out of the ordinary. My greater cavil however was that when we asked for ordinary tap water this arrived unchilled - this is always a good pointer as to how much a restaurant really cares about its customers. We did share a glass of pleasant but unremarkable Sauvignon Blanc, priced with a mark-up of at least 400%. For mains my wife had tuna, which she liked, and I had globe artichoke heart, tasty and unusual, but with a surprising number of small leaves and wisps of the choke, which can be dangerous. We skipped desserts, winced at the bill, and left. Although I was on crutches and my wife had a walking stick we were left to open the door for ourselves. This restaurant is clearly resting on its Michelin star and interesting food, but the level of care and service leaves much to be desired. Food alone does not make for an enjoyable meal out, especially in such a cramped and noisy environment. F

From the minute you walk in you are made to feel at home. A relaxed bistro style restaurant with a great variety of French options including seafood, fish, vegetarian and meat. The food was exceptional the wine list varied with prices to suit all and a good selection of cocktails to start. I thought the quality was easily Michelin 1 star at half the price. I would highly recommend it to anybody who loves French cuisine.

I love this restaurant. It provides unpretentious but well-thought out and beautifully cooked french cuisine. Everything we had was wonderful (sweetbreads - incredible; duck and sirloin - stunning; chocolate mousse - sublime). Very reasonable wine list. The atmosphere is one of a simple, no gimmicks well-organised restaurant, not too noisy, attentive but not annoying staff. Its not the cheapest restaurant in the world but for what it does it shouldnt be, and for what it does it is excellent value. P.s. to the reviewer below who complained the sourdough was cold - it should be: hot bread can give you bad indigestion.

This is a wonderful restaurant. The scallops starter was phenomenal and my sirloin was the best steak I've had in the UK and jointly the best I've had anywhere. My dining companion felt the crab starter could perhaps have been slightly larger. I opted for...

My better half and I visited Little French for lunch last Saturday and must day it was spectacular! It was quite busy, but the tables were well spaced, and the service was impeccable. I had the Hake and Ruth had the duck, both dishes were absolutely fantastic. We can't wait to return for dinner at some point!

We managed to get a table at short notice, staff are really friendly and helpful, food was super tasty we had anchovies to start with, which were delicious, we then had duck with figs and rosemary potatoes, this dish was excellent the sauce was delicious, had a wine which was recommended by one of the staff which went perfectly with the duck, I have dairy intolerance and had no problem finding something to eat on the menu, definitely worth a visit, we were on table ten near kitchen, which was quite hot, was bearable but on a hot day would be uncomfortable.
