Lion Inn in Monmouthshire

Easter Sunday, hadn't booked, place was heaving. We walked in on the off-chance having been recommended by the campsite where we are staying. It was late in the day so a couple of things weren't available but we were warned prior to sitting down. Fixed price menu - £30 for 3 courses plus coffee (or £21 for smaller appetites). Sat in the newer 'restaurant ' part of this beautiful traditional old pub. Great service, fabulous food, warm friendly atmosphere..... we both reckoned this was probably THE best roast dinner we'd ever had. Too full for dessert so took it home - again beautifully presented. This is 100% what you want when you're spending your hard earned money - 5 star fabulous *****

Came across The Lion while on holiday and on a day sightseeing. The food was excellent. So much choice and all fresh. Staff very friendly. Good Beer. We decided to visit again while on our week's holiday and would definitely recommend it.

Excellent in all respects really - really welcoming, friendly staff, great choice of ales/beers, superb food. A real cut above usual 'pub grub'. Good idea to book as it was v busy on a wet, cold Tuesday night! Games available - a cribbage league were meeting whilst we were there. Great atmosphere. A few miles outside Monmouth along a twisting country road but well worth the drive.

Ate in the evening from the Sunday Luncheon menu (served all day). Not everything was available but what we had was good and not expensive. The Smaller Appetite option provided plenty of food for OAPs. Staff were friendly and cheerful, even after a busy day (which explained why some of the items were not available). The dining room was spacious and pleasant.

Absolutely superb food ,venue and service we could not fault it and look forward to our return visit.Lovely menu lovely staff!

What a wonderful place! The Lion has got to be one of the nicest places I have ever visited. From the time you walk in to the bar and you’re greeted by the log fire, you know you’re in a very welcoming establishment. I’m not always a fan of superlatives, but the staff are brilliant and the food and drink superb. We spent a wonderful couple of hours in the Lion and we can’t wait to go back again.

A family meet-up was the reason for this visit: we wanted a venue within east reach of the Midlands and South Wales. The welcome and the service were great, even when mayonnaise was requested for the chips. (Sorry!). We had lovely food and enjoyed the good sized portions. This is a quaint traditional pub. Let’s keep it that way.

we visited on Sunday the 3rd with a group of ramblers following our walk in the area. The pub took me back about thirty years with an unspoilt ( by modernity ) interior, low beams, gnarly walls, eclectic furniture and a fabulous and surprisingly non smoky log fire. It was just great to see a traditional pub so busy and its a long time since I stood behind so many eager drinkers at the bar. The food was also very good, fresh veg, good quality meat and generous portions, last but not least the staff were both friendly and helpful.

We visited the Lion for the first time this year and since they have had the new dinning area function room built, which is very well done and is an impressive area, we however where sat in the original restaurant area. The Staff on arrival were welcoming as always and ensured we were seated and asked for our drinks order, we then ordered our food which was of the standard we have come to expect at this venue, two of our party ordered sweets, when these arrived it was noticed that certain items were missing, this we pointed out to the front of house staff and the matter was rectified to our satisfaction, it was put down to new staff training in the kitchen, this is understood as we all can make mistakes, this did cause me to only score 4 for this visit however we all would recommend this establishment to all our Families and Friends.

Well that was fun! After a great family meal we got to our 4x4 to find we had a flat battery, our eldest didn't have her jump leads so I popped back in to the busy pub to see if there was a chance anyone had any. Thankfully, the lovely Ben stepped in with his Mitsubishi mate in the yellow hoodie, after lots of trying between their cars and our daughters old MG we finally got the beast going. Staff and patrons were so lovely, it was great to see that the pub was busy from the minute we arrived until we left with our truck finally back on the road. We came across this gem when finshing off our walk at Brecon Beacons as we was visiting for the weekend. Reviews looked great so thought we would give it a try . The food was phenomenal and the staff were very welcoming, would highly recommend a visit!!

Been meaning to go here for a while and made our first visit this week. Turned up at 1.30 on the day before valentines day and surprised to see a packed car park. Now we know why! Absolutely super lunch was had! We hadn't booked, but we were shown to a table very quickly. We could see how busy it was and were advised it could be about 30 minutes for orders to arrive. Actually that's what happened, but it wasn't a problem. The food we had ( a guinea fowl and a duck breast) was excellent. Service was friendly and efficient. Faultless, although the desert I wanted had run out, but that doubles the excuse to return. Well done folks...

Very good Sunday lunch. Local ingredients and tasted like really good quality home made. The pork extraordinary, very flavourful and tender. Veg really good too, as was a well-kept pint of local bitter. Warm atmosphere and we really appreciated the service. Friendly phone answering by the landlady, who greeted us warmly, remembering my wife was gluten free and explaining her options, which included gluten free Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Our waitress then took over, who was first class. Great communicater; very helpful and attentive. Food and service as it really ought to be but sadly isn’t in so many places, particularly the chains. All round, a really good experience, we’d love to go back.

Loud, rude, intimidating waitress. Dismissed us. Talked over us. Didn't bring water. Order was wrong. No chips. Wasn't a nice eating out experience. Everything too much trouble for her. Food was good but ruined by this person's attitude. Felt like id been paying to be personally insulted.

We had a such a lovely afternoon celebrating a friends Birthday. There was a delicious afternoon tea selection with assorted teas. We even had a few rounds of Bridge..and a lot of laughs. We had a great lunch here. Super-friendly staff, and a good menu with lots of choice. The food was delicious and well-presented. The pub is open every day, serving food all day which is unusual and great for a post-walk meal -we usually arrive 5 minutes after the kitchen stops serving, but not a problem here. We will definitely be back!

As I mentioned to the excellent staff, it's rare that all 3 major boxes are ticked - quality, portion size and value, but all 3 ticked and some! We googled somewhere to eat en route home from the midlands and honestly couldn't fault anything about this fantastic pub, in a nice quiet village. Amazing panoramic views to/from the place too. We popped in for some food and found an absolute Gem. A proper village pub with excellent food. Great to see Venison and pheasant on the menu. We will definitely return.

My husband and I came to the area for a long weekend of mountain biking. Hubby being an avid rider and myself just along for the adventure…he thought that I would be happy to do 30km of trails without breakfast or snacks! Let me tell you hanger set in and I was feeling murderous. He realised that to save the day he needs to navigate to the nearest pub which happened to be The Lion Inn in Trellech. I sat outside with the bikes while he went in for a couple of coffees. A few minutes later he emerged with a big grin saying that the owner has said we can safely keep the bikes out back and come in to warm up by the fire. We were met with such kindness and warm friendliness! We stayed for coffee, mulled wine and dinner and I made sure that our route the next day included another visit to The Lion Inn. The food was lovely, drinks were great but the wonderful welcoming attitude of the staff will keep us coming back the next time we visit the area! Thanks for being the reason that I didn’t murder my husband on the first day of our trip 😂

I have been visiting this pub for over 40 years both as a child and a man and what never changes is the warmth that greats you as you entre the front door. I took my elderly relatives out for a late minute lunch appointment last saturday and they were very very busy but the warmth the manager and his staff showed me was excellent with the food very much 5 star and just wanted ti say a massive thank you and will be coming up again feom down south very soon and will be booking rooms next time.
