A gem of a place just off the main busy street and in a quiet spot. Cakes to die for...proper cakes..slices are big and atypical of the Norweigian cakes/cuisine. Lovely coffees and a vast array of teas. Open sandwiches and beautiful soups. Everything home made. Nothing in packets, proper cups/saucers..

Wanted to find somewhere to eat that wasn’t a chain and was away from the main street. We followed the COVID instructions inside and stood by the counter having picked a table and waited, and waited. Then two more customers came in and went straight to a table inside and were served. We’re still waiting. Eventually our order was taken, and about 15 minutes later we got our drinks. Then about 10 minutes after that we got our toasties, which were really good. Such a pity. Small independents are very important, but this one needs to sharpen up its act

We had lunch with another family socially distanced on separate tables, all Covid precautions were in place and our contact details were taken very politely. The menu is varied, the soup of the day was delicious, the sandwiches were fresh, filling and the bread was lovely. As for the cakes.....which one to choose from!! A really lovely tea room with a genuine welcome and friendly staff. We loved the large tea pot for three, the hot water to top up and matching crockery. A really lovely tea room.

Called in for lunch on a busy Saturday. It was pretty full and food is prepared to order so it doesn’t appear in 2 minutes but that’s not a negative, service is perfectly good. We both had toasted sandwiches (tuna, cheese, red onion & Brie, cranberry) and they were packed with filling and very tasty. It’s a lovely cafe off the main shopping streets and well worth a visit.

The important bit first 5 hygiene rating! A great place with bookshelves stacked with books for all the family which my wife loved. 3 of us - two toasties and 1 normal sandwich, two hot chocolates which by all accounts were nice and a pot of tea which served up about 4 china cups. We ate at 2:00pm and I’m still not hungry now @ 7:00. Not huge portions but just right and all off us felt the food we had was very good.It was quite quiet, which seems a shame as a bit of a hidden gem.Staff were fine. Saturday staff who were great, I presume the owner(s) was/were the people behind the counter who gave us a hello on the way in and a goodbye on the way out. It’s all I want to be honest. If we need an extra menu - I’m happy to get it, a chair I’m happy to help myself. We stayed perhaps 45 minutes and it was nice to find a quiet, relaxed, welcoming place, with good food. Why not a 5 star - guess I’m a little tight and felt a couple of quid less might have been right but in all honesty it’s probably much less than those well known coffee shops/cafe bars on all high streets. Thanks for having us and if we’re in ‘Aber’ again we’ll be back and will also let everyone we know about this place.

The cakes in this café are just wonderful - so delicious, and also different from the cakes you'd find in most cafés. One of the owners is originally from Norway, and I'm so glad she brought these recipes with her to Wales! From the Lindt chocolate cake to the apple cake, every cake I've tried in her café over the last nearly-4 years has been amazing - and my family loves it so much that we visit every week. It's a wonderfully family-friendly atmosphere, with books and toys for the kids, and it's a warm, welcoming café in general. As well as a wide variety of cakes and mouthwatering scones and teacakes, the homemade soups and sandwiches are delicious, and there's a good variety of teas on offer as well as yummy hot chocolate and good coffee. I've lived in Vienna, Leeds, and various cities in America, and this is genuinely my favorite cake shop I've ever, ever been to - I feel very lucky that it's in my own town!

We were on holiday in Abergavenny and wanted to treat us with a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake, so we were looking for a tea room. The name appealed to us and the fact, that it is a bit hidden. Coming into the tea room, I was almost saying to my partner, that I want to go again, as the air inside was shockingly stale and there was no flair at all. I wish I can say a bit more positive about the staff, but I can't - at least not until we left. There was a man, who just disappeared into the kitchen and a young lady, who looked at us with a very bored face. No smile, nothing. We ordered a cake and a coffee and it felt like every step was too much for her. As we sat on the table with the view to the counter, we watched her as she was constantly looking at the clock on the wall. It was obviously that she wasn't motivated to work at all. Later a woman joined the staff (I guess she was the owner) She was a bit more friendly, but we've already finished and were about to go. The room itself has a lot of potential and could be made up a lot more. A tea room should have a kind of flair / own personality / should be cosy, this one unfortunately wasn't. We didn't feel welcomed at all and due to all of that I couldn't enjoy the stay at all.

You don't expect to find a tea room as homely as this on your doorstep. Popped in for a late lunch and whilst we were the only patrons inside it was full of period furniture and lace on a multitude of different size tables. There is a wall of books to be read if you want to ignore your partner - better than doing it with your mobile! Not personally keen on the soup that day I plumped for the bbq chicken toastie which came with salad. Well prepared and with great taste and onion chutney to die for. So very well thought out and enough to keep hunger away. There is still room for some homemade cake and the choice was great. The flavour was excellent also. That something extra to make it perfect could be some background music/ noise. Take away the steak knives for toasties. Check up with the clients to see how they are getting on? Something extra will give it the extra star!

We go to Abergavenny frequently, but hadn't come across Emmeline's until we saw a poster attached to a sign advertising "healthy soups and unhealthy cakes" . We found it - it's up an alley off the Main Street - and have been going there ever since. It reminds you of Simeon's dining room, with a couple of dining tables and a few small tables, none of which match, and a couple of big bookcases with lots of books and a small play area. There are some glass fronted fridges behind the counter with an array of cream cakes, and a couple of non-cream cakes on the counter. The only problem is that the selection changes regularly, so you can't trust that your favourite will be available, which simply means you have to try something else!

The food was freshly prepared and delicious. Several people told me that the scones were the best they had ever eaten! People were amazed by the cakes and I know some people tried both of the two we had chosen to have. The staff also kindly offered to put the cake in boxes for people to take home if they did not want it at the time.Yesterday was a very sad day for us as a family but Emmeline's provided us with a beautiful tea which I know my Mum would have loved. We came here after reading previous good reviews on trip advisor, and it being only a short distance from home. What a lovely discovery!!.We ordered a ham and cheese toastie and the soup of the day which was sweet potatoe and leek, and both were absolutely lovely. There was a fabulous range of cakes to choose from, we tried the white lady, an unusual mix of apricot, cream and a beautiful sponge, with a marzipan and walnut topping, which was stunning, and a chocolate and nut cake which was equally gorgeous. The cafe is very comfortable with shelves of books to browse and daily and local newspapers to read. Its situated away from the main town centre, but next to the cinema and is relatively easy to find with parking nearby in Trinity Street. We are looking forward to returning very soon.

We had a lovely lunch on the patio yesterday - a bit chilly but the blankets helped! Really pleased to have found this little gem of a cafe - the Norwegian style open sandwiches were delicious, and we couldn't resist the chocolate and raspberry cake! Can't wait for our next visit! Inside it is a family friendly place with lots of room and plenty to look at - a big shelf full of books and newspapers too.

I love visiting Emmelines and do so regularly. The cakes are just to die for. It is a little family run business where everyone is really friendly. Love the atmosphere - well worth a visit. There soups are also something special.

Visited Various times throughout last summer..cakes are amazing..Some of the best we have evet tried..The gentlemen working there is very nice...however whenever the female member of staff has served us, our order which is always the same comes to a different ammount and we are charged more ..this has happened four times..also last time we visited every table was strewn with used dishes.Very Disappointed .

We popped in for a light lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. But the cherry cake was just so amazing, best cake I have ever tasted (sorry daughter -in -law, yours have now been relegated to second place! ) Everything was reasonably priced and freshly made. The lady serving (owner I believe )was very friendly and the place itself had a lovely homely feel to it. If I lived nearer I would certainly go back again and again!

Small and obviously a lot of home baking on offer. Nice and clean and airy located in the old Police Station. Central, parking, outside seating and good value. Nice cup of tea ( or coffee), friendly lady serving, relaxed surroundings. What more could you want?

Absolutely beautiful - calm, peaceful, friendly, cafe. They have a great range of speciality teas including my favourite chai. Had a delicious bowl of pea soup and managed to resist the amazing looking home made cakes! Made use of the free wifi and sat and did my afternoons work in here. Will definitely be back.

Visited this café with my sister. Cafe just off the main street opposite the cinema. Car Parking around the corner at 80 pence for two hoursThere are some good value deals for the café and the cakes looked great but we could only fit the soup in which was accompanied with some very tasty bread. Looking at our peers offerings on other tables the open sandwiches were massive. We thought the service was great. For people with disabilities there is a w/c accessible toilet. Definitely a place to take your parents for afternoon tea

Delicious cakes and soup. A real gem of a place! If there could be any room for improvements, I'd like to see a bit more selection for lunchtime, soup being their only current offering.

I am a regular here, going about twice a month. The cakes are excellent, all home made, mostly with cream, although there is always a Lindt chocolate cake, have seen an apple cake too if cream is not your type of cake. They are quality cakes and I don't find it expensive (as I read in a previous review). There must be the best selection of teas here in Abergavenny although if you prefer coffee then it appears that there is only a cafetiere of ground coffee on offer. Have tried most cakes although the peanut and chocolate has to be a favourite. Have filled many loyalty cards and had my free cake! Soup always smells good and have been told that they are selling open sandwiches as well. Limited food but of good quality.

The cakes are nice but a bit over priced. The owner wouldn't honour her her "get your tenth cake free " offer, which seemed rather mean spirited and not the way to build loyal customers.

A stroll around Abergavenny took us to the old Police Station and the aptly named Baker St, where, to our surprise, we found Emmeline's. For £7-50 a delicious home made soup, granary bread, scrumptious cake and a pot of tea. Absolutely delicious. If the soup and bread fill you up you can always take the cake home. A little gem.

This place is fabulous - beautiful furnishings, books to browse, local jewellery and newspapers galore. The owners are delightful and then there's the cake! Home made with so much care and attention - the peanut cake is outrageous and then there's a cherry and chocolate not to mention many others! I have never tasted cake like it before - why suffer the queues and mass market rip off of the coffee changes when you can have this. We had a soup, cake and drink deal for just £7.50 - the homemade soup was excellent too.

I have been here a few times and the cakes just blow me away. There is a fantastic selection, all of which are baked on the premises. They are amazing light in texture and even have gluten free options. The biggest dilemma is which one to have...oh well another visit is needed!

I'd say the cakes at Emmeline's compare with the best I've eaten anywhere in Europe, and the prices are very reasonable. A cafetiere of coffee for two and a shared (big!) piece of cake set us back about £6.00 yesterday. The coffee was great and the cake - topped with toasted almonds and meringue, with a big dollop of apricot cream on the side - was memorable, well worth the calories!

Emmeline's has an atmosphere of 'get away from all the hustle and bustle' and just sit down and have a scrumptious cake, that really are worth every penny you pay for them. Whenever my family go there, I always have a delicious hot chocolate with marshmallows to compliment my cake. There's really quite a wide range of cakes to choose from and they're all presented very openly in a cabinet behind the counter that really does make your eyes pop out - if you're a cake connoisseur, that is. I've never had the same cake twice, since I've been going there on an irregular basis.Emmeline's also offers daily newspapers (to read), books (to browse through or buy), and broken china jewellery (to admire and / or buy). Other snacks are also available, but not sure what they are, as I just focus on the cakes and nothing else. For me, Emmeline's is a little haven, just off Abergavennys high street and right opposite the cinema. Sit down, relax and tuck in. Heaven!!
