We stumbled on this place by sheer chance when taking a back road from Forest of Dean to Tintern. As someone who lives in a village in Cornwall that has a small community shop, I know how difficult it is to run an operation like this particularly on the scale of Brockweir. It has an amazing range of produce and a delightful cafe. Well done to all the volunteers and committee responsible for it. To anyone else who happens to be in the area, do make sure that you call in and see what they have to offer. Bob from Grampound, Cornwall

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We visited once on Saturday for lunch and again on the Sunday. Based on Saturday's visit I'd have rated the cafe a straight five. Sunday's visit however didn't go quite as well so we're stuck on three stars. Let me explain: I'm a vegetarian, worse than that though I'm a discerning vegetarian (fussy is another pejorative term used). I take what I eat and drink seriously as I train hard and want to know the provenance of my food and drink. I'm also allergic to caffeine so finding a good decaff coffee feels more or less like a quest for the holy grail at times. This was my first visit to this lovely cafe on the outskirts of Brockweir near Tintern, and I was impressed by the range of eco products, organic veg and the quality of the goods in the store. More than that though I was struck by the fact the place was run by volunteers. Our lunch on Saturday consisted of one of the best bowls of home-made soup I've ever tasted, a roasted vegetable baguette (equally tasty), and a cherry tiffin washed down with a fabulous decaff coffee - the sort you want to order again, but you know it would never quite taste the same. The place wasn't busy, but neither was it empty. Marks out of ten - an easy 9+ Fast forward 24 hours - it's a long time in both politics and cafes - and we've only ordered hot drinks; a pot of breakfast tea and a large decaff cappucino. I've got into the habit of emphasising it must be decaff as I'm allergic blah blah and I've been caught out more than once in the past. We've arrived around 1300 and it's probably less busy than Saturday by some 20% but 20 minutes comes and goes before I have to check where our drinks were. The staff (different from Saturday) are clearly struggling under the weight of dishes and the fallout from what may have been a busy lunch, but I'm told drinks are on the way - I again reiterate it must be decaff (you already know where this is going) and ten minutes later a pot of tea and a small cappuccino arrive. With a mental sigh I reminded the young lady I ordered a large cappuccino which almost seemed to break her spirit (who is supporting these amazing volunteers is my question). Another ten minutes goes by and a large coffee arrives. 'It's decaff?' is my well-worn question to her to which she replied 'yes'. Fine. I'm good to go. Not quite as good as yesterday's, but tasty all the same. Ten minutes later I'm in the prodromal stages of my usual response to caffeine - shakes, heart palpitations, generally feeling odd. So that'll be a caffeinated decaff then... I didn't raise it with the staff as a) they were already under the cosh, and b) no one will be able to confirm it was decaff or not. Yep, I know it's a first world problem, and I'm a bad person for dissing volunteers trying to do their best, but you're either running a business - or you ain't. Continuity is key, and in less than 24 hours we went from a sublime experience to a fairly mediocre one that got 50% of an order containing just two drinks wrong. The guys on Sunday were either short-staffed, or under-trained to cope with the demands on them. That's not fair on staff, or on their customers... It's a great resource, probably much needed in an area where, to be frank, other cafes aren't even close to the standards of this place, so I really hope our next visit - and I will visit again - goes like it did on Saturday...

It's tucked away a couple of minutes drive up from Brockweir bridge and to be honest you are unlikely to accidently drive past but that's a great shame. The shop is a stunning example of local produce and farm shop type food stuffs. But the real triumph of here is the café. For a 'local shop' the coffee is superb and would rival any dedicated coffee house. The cake selection was stunning with making a choice a real struggle. The café has an outdoor area that's in a real suntrap and was very pleasant to sit in despite the temperature being about 5 degrees! There's also an adjacent playground which will keep the children occupied for a while.I will return here and frequently.

We were staying in the area so thought we would pop in for a look around. Great little shop where you can buy most things with a tea/coffee shop attached. We had a nice cup of tea and hot chocolate outside whilst our toddler explored the play area outside. If you fancy a little refreshment and somewhere for the children to burn off a bit of steam in the play area, definitely pop in.

A lovely little community shop with whole foods and nice local veg, fruit, cheese. Lovely friendly atmosphere run by locals. Nothing else either for miles around. Cup of coffee was disappointing though. The small size was really teeny and weak. Some ok fish in the freezer. But don't rely on this place to meet all you food needs for a week. Books to borrow and local walks are useful as is local knowledge.

This is an award winning village shop and café which I recommend whole heartedly to walkers, riders. bikers and all others in the area. It is staffed by volunteers and what is on offer is what you would expect to find if you called around to a friend's house - home made soups, made to order sandwiches, cakes and the like. all very nicely done - plus a range of hot and cold drinks. It is exactly the sort of place I dream of finding when out for a day's walk and I'm planning a whole series of walks in the area which pass by this shop and café so that I can call again. That said, I get Brockweir Badger's comment - the range on offer in the shop is more high end Waitrose than bargain basement Lidl but I guess that they know their market - and I didn't think that the café itself was in any way rarefied. Be warned though if you are on foot - it a pretty stiff climb up to the shop/café from the river at Brockweir - I'd guess about a mile, so bear that in mind. Definitely worth the detour and way better than what is on offer at the Old Station, Tintern.

Our opinion is that this is not a shop that aims to serve the village, but rather tourists and holiday cottage tenants. The obvious comparison is Browns in Llandogo which seems to be the preferred choice of most of the locals. We have visited the village shop on quite a number of occasions and have always been disappointed. We have not tried the cafe.

We arrived a little late for any prepared food, so were encouraged to have a browse around the produce and put a picnic together. Lots of great chutneys and pickles, pies and breads, and a fab deli counter. We managed to put together a generous feast for 6 hungry guys in tweed, for £20. The staff even gave us knives and paper plates, and we ate in the sunshine in the lovely outdoor area. Very popular with families, with lots of activities for children. This place deserves more reviews, it's well worth a visit and I will certainly return if I am in the area.

We visited the Village Shop on a very snowy day in January 2013. This store is a little gem that is tucked away in the country side. The produce in varied and delightful with fresh assorted breads and cakes. Welsh cakes and other biscuits and baked goods. Fresh meats, sausages, bacon and cheeses. Locally produced jams and chutneys. There is a second hand book library and wifi access. They also run a postal service and you can get daily papers here too. The shop has a license to sell local beer and wine to take out. The cafe is delightful with good coffee. They also do an assortment of teas – needless to say you can sample the cakes and biscuits in here as well. The shop is staffed by volunteers that have a wealth of local knowledge about the area. You can pick up walking maps in the shop. They made us very welcome and on finding out that it was my husband’s birthday that day Alison, the manager, brought out a toasted teacake with a candle on the top. Dogs a generally not allowed into the shop but we were allowed to take our small jack Russell into the cafe (that may have been because of the weather and the fact that we were the only ones in there on that particular morning). There is an extensive play area outside with some great wooden toys for kids to climb on. There is ample parking outside for visitors. We will definitely visit again when next back in Monmouthshire.

We called into the Brockweir and Hewelsfield Village Shop and Cafe on the recommendation of a local furniture maker - his showroom is just up the road. The cafe (with free Wi-Fi access) is delightful. I couldn't resist the carrot cake despite new year good intentions and the coffee was excellent. Great selection of foodstuffs, much of it local, in the shop which is beautifully laid out. We got chatting to one of the volunteers who explained the project's Green ethos. Here's their website: www.bandhvillageshop.co.uk

This is a delightful village shop and cafe run by volunteers from the local community. It's off the main A466 near Tintern - cross the river where there is a sign to Brockweir and HAPPA - its about halfway up the hill to the next village. There's a children's play area, plenty of choice in the cafe. We enjoyed a snack and browsed the shop.

Beautiful location and beer garden is beautiful next to the river, however the barmaid was very snappy with my boyfriend and it seemed very clicky. A shame as it would be beautiful in the summer months

Having not been to The Greyhound for a year or so, I was thrilled with our choice. Nothing had changed, everything was as good as before. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. Despite the restaurant being busy, Service was prompt and friendly and the food ( Steak & Kidney Pie / Fruity Chicken Curry ) was plentiful and delicious. Highly recommended. We certainly won't leave it so long till we return

Another enjoyable visit to the Holland Arms. Usual friendly welcome and great service. We shared a duck starter from the specials board, amazing, especially the sauce. We then had lamb and steak as our mains. Both meats were delicious as were the accompanying vegetables. Good choice of wine (I enjoyed the Malbec). Couldn’t resist a bread and butter pudding for dessert - even though full. Look forward to our next visit - probably one of the Christmas meals now being advertised. Very reasonable bill.
