Don't go!! Awful.... all food wrapped in cling film, no use by dates... one unhappy person serving. We had sausage rolls and coffee... we asked for them to be warmed up, they went in the microwave and came out soggy.... if we EVER return to Hythe I'll avoid this place for sure

We went here on a Sunday morning because nowhere else seemed to be open and we wanted to walk along the nearby canal and up the hill afterwards. We both had a fry up, it didn't say it came with toast, so I ordered toast as an extra but it did come with toast! However I didn't eat mine, oddly it was only toasted on one side. My beans were cold, mushrooms tasted of cold oil, and the sausage mushy but the bacon and egg were nice. I would visit again but only for a hot drink and biscuit. Venue was clean, nice toilet and friendly staff although they were both in the kitchen and unaware of the building queue at the counter!

Stopped here for breakfast before our trip on the railway. Friendly enough greeting and service and the food was brought out (very) quickly. Nothing wrong with the food for a basic cafe but certainly nothing to be excited about either. Bacon without any colour and an obviously cheap and deep fried sausage. Still filled a hole before our train departed. Wouldn’t say it’s exactly professional to have all the staff lined up outside having a smoke break in their uniform either. Shame as location is perfect for the tourists but if I ever return I’ll make time to eat elsewhere.

We visited the Light Railway Tearoom (the "upmarket" section at the rear of the Light Railway Café), whilst travelling on the RHDR, the Tearoom was clean and nicely laid out and furnished. My wife enjoyed a nice ream tea which was of a good size and I had a very tasty Ploughman's lunch. Prices a little higher than I would have expected but not excessively so. On a negative point, the staff did seem to be more concerned about the café part of the business and several times needed to be fetched as they were nowhere to be seem in the tearoom.

Visited this cafe today with my family for breakfast, Firstly for what it was I found it to be over priced, Secondly we were over charged £5 doesn't sound much I know and normally we would just let it go but when we questioned it she knew she'd over changed us, she was adding extra amounts on each item to pocket it herself!!! Disgusting as some tourist may not question it In terms of the food it was edible but I wouldn't return simply for the reasons above.

This is in a prime position, but that is about all it has going for it. Poor food, lazily cooked. It's not rocket science cooking a full English breakfast, but you would never guess if you came here. I'm not one to write a bad review and look for the positives. But.In the sixteen years I have lived in Hythe I have been in the cafe many many times. The owners until recently had a few quirks but were always welcoming. Other recent reviews have mentioned the coffee. Yes, that Italian coffee shop feel has gone and the instant option is no substitute. When walking the dog over the summer and sitting outside on the picnic tables has often resulted in my bacon sandwich waiting for me on the counter.... And no one telling me!After a walk we tend to go into the railway station and get a coffee in there instead. The new owners need to buck up.

I don't like to do bad reviews, this is my first one, but sadly the cafe isn't what it was. The welcome has gone and the quality of the coffee has fallen off the precipice. The old coffee machine is now redundant and instead of a lovely cup its now just instant dishwater. Those that run the cafe seem to want to shut the place up as soon as they can too. I've been told to hurry up on one occasion when it was getting near closing time and on another there was little room to sit as a section was closed off after cleaning. I've visited three times after the original owners Ray and Rita left hoping it would improve after a settling in period but it hasn't.

This could be a goldmine if someone knew how to run it. Stopped to get a takeaway drink. The lady working there was sat at a table chatting to a customer and got up to come and serve me. I asked for a soya cappuccino and was told "we don't do soya" to which I replied "oh, ok, I'll have dairy then". She then proceeded to blurt out "don't s'pose many places do". The other lady customer behind me exclaimed "actually everywhere does" and raised her eyebrows at me. The server said "well you're the first to ask in a month". I'm not surprised seeing as my cappuccino came in a tiny foam cup that set my teeth on edge to hold and a flimsy plastic lid that you had to remove to drink the contents. All for £1.40? On leaving the cafe I went to the bus stop (30 yards away) and opened the lid to find an insipid liquid resembling a flat white that tasted like Nescafé. I promptly threw it in the bin. I had hoped the takeover of the café by the railway would herald a new dawn but it appears to have been dragged backwards.

I think the reviewers are missing the point. This is a a largely unchanged classic cafe with a proper 50s tea urn, service in white coats, battenburg cake slices wrapped in cellophane. Every Sunday morning there are dozens of cyclists who convene here because they know a great cafe when they see one. Sure you can get better cooked food elsewhere but that's not the point. Brown sauce, yellow formica tables, bonded seats, whats not to like? Russell Davies has it right in his review: http://russelldavies.typepad.com/ateaandathink/2006/09/light_railway_r.html

Filthy cups, plates and cutlery. If you want any kind of food that you ordered, it all cost extra. I had the big breakfast at 4.95. The egg was cooked nicely and the beans were nice. The sausage was pale and tasteless. The bacon had an incredible amount of fat. One of my sons had the sausage and chips. He didn't like the sausage or want to eat the chips. My other son had the fish and chips with peas. All frozen food. The fish was prebreaded and deep fried. Obviously cooked at too high of a temperature. That son also refused to eat his chips. Food was bland and disappointing, though it looks like they are trying to make up for it with quantity. Seems the chef doesn't want to be there. If you order sausage roll with fries, it will cost you £9. If you order it separately, it will be £7. That is, unless they give part of your order to someone else and then tell you they don't have any more, even though you already paid and been waiting for 10 minutes for the food. Just go anywhere else and you'll have better rating experience

We had booked a room in the adjoining B&B (highly recommended) and also reserved a table at the Famous Ship Inn. Our drive from our home Devon took us over 7 hours (thank you M25 and M20) so we were only just in time for our reservation. The inn itself is very old but we were shown to a table in a modern conservatory on the south side. The food and service were impeccable and the place was doing a great trade, which created a warm and enjoyable atmosphere. This was an excellent dining experience.

We popped in for lunch. We were not staying at the "hotel" so cannot comment on the rooms. The food is excellent, if a little overpriced. As are the drinks. An example is a pint of lager shandy was priced at £6.35 and noted as a pint of Birra Moretti on the bill. I raised this but they said they "could not change it". And the larger used was not Birra Moretti! That is disappointing and, for me, that's a deal breaker.
