went for evening meal with family on 19 march the food was amazing !! very welcoming very reasonable food and beverage prices very reasonable all in all a very pleasurable experience have booked a table for 10 of my family on easter sunday cant wait compliments to the chef!! and bar staff new owners i beleive keep up the good work and success will come your way

Popped in as was in New Romney for a couple of hours. It’s a quaint restaurant, cosy and clean. Staff were friendly and attentive. I had the full breakfast, cooked to my preferences and was very pleased by the price when I paid at the end. Hopefully I can come back and try lunch/dinner here one day too.

8 of us went for lunch, serving and bar staff were brilliant ,friendly and professional and ran the bar and restaurant very efficiently. Food and service was great and good prices Went back today for a drink with a friend and once again the barman was very friendly and attentive brilliant customer service.

In the process of being taken over. The room was a king-size bed room. Clean and bed comfortable, bathroom a bit tired. Staff very helpful and polite. We ate at the hotel the first night and the food was presented well and all plates were cleared as were the desserts.

An ideal place to have lunch together with our family before our journey on the RHDR Santa train! I booked before we went and was warmly welcomed, all of us enjoyed the food we had and to be honest nothing was too much trouble. Great service, ourgranddaughters were slightly on the excitable side as they were going to see Father Christmas later we weren’t made to feel anything else but welcome! Will certainly return, hopefully before the next Santa train trip!!

We don't live locally but visited with local relatives for lunch on a Sunday. The decor, seating and layout are very nice and tastefully done. Service was prompt and polite, though perhaps could have had a smidge more enthusiasm. Only four menus were provided between the six of us (all adults)! The menu we were given was completely different than the one currently on their website. I know some places change menus regularly and just have a 'sample' one online, but the website one was not marked as just a sample. Looking back at their Facebook posts afterwards, I found that they had posted the new summer menu on there way back in June - so why was their website one not updated too? As vegetarians one son and myself had already spent time looking at the website one to see our options and had chosen a dish that then no longer appeared, although the veggie choices on the new menu are pretty good, but the correct one should be on the website and be kept updated. There is also no mention on their website that they also run a Sunday Roast menu, which we only found out about when we also received the menu for that! Good to see on it that they do have a nut roast on that for us veggies and vegans though. We ordered main courses only, which came within a perfect time frame. Halloumi burgers for my son and I were nice enough but a request for no mayo on one was not carried out, but there was so little anyway that it wasn't a dealbreaker! Hubby and other son enjoyed their beefburgers, which they reported as being very tasty and made of good quality meat. All the burger buns were rather cheap and dry though - these definitely need improvement. Scampi basket fine but unimaginative. One of us had lasagne, which was incredibly large anyway, but also came with the most huge garlic bread any of us had ever seen - it was basically both halves of a full size baguette! The baguette would have been a meal in itself and was barely touched due to its size. Chips are fine if you like the chunky ones - I never manage more than a few so would be good to have the option to replace the chips with salad as they are the accompaniment to many of the meals offered. Onion rings were good and some of the best I've had - not too thick. As is common with many of these types of restaurant, it would have been impossible to manage a starter, main and a dessert, as the mains are just too huge and filling. We would have liked to have had at least two courses, maybe even three, but couldn't manage any more than one due to the size of the mains, meaning that the venue must be missing out on extra revenue. The waitress delivered our meals and left immediately without checking whether we would like anything else, such as sauces or condiments, so we had to wait until she checked back later for the opportunity to request some tomato sauce (to help with the chips and dry burger buns)! We would definitely eat there again as it is close to where our relatives live, has a nice atmosphere and reasonable food, but it could up its game on attention to detail with the website, the quality of some food items, and some service improvements. It only 'met expectations' on this visit, but with a few tweaks it could be much better.

We stayed B&B at the Ship for 3 night from Sunday 16th July 2023. £315- plus drinks and evening meals. As I mentioned in my review of the accommodation the breakfasts were really nice. Good selection on the menu including Eggs Benedict etc, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, full English with eggs anyway of course. All very nicely cooked and presented. Cereals , juice, tea or cafeteria coffee. We had our evening meals here and enjoyed those. We nearly missed out on our Sunday roast as the kitchen closes early that day at 7pm, so be aware of that. The other evenings were fine and we tended to go for the daily special at £14- Hungarian Goulash on the Monday, and Barbecue chicken on the Tuesday. All very tasty. The Shepherd Neame real ale is very nice too. We liked it here and would certainly stay again...

Just passing through town. Stopped for dinner and a couple of beers. Excellent quality food and good service. Friendly, polite and prompt staff. Perhaps a bit on the pricey side but otherwise all very good.

Been here several times unfortunately this time was appalling, after waiting several minutes with several other customers, I had to go find a staff member to ask for some service. Which clearly put her out was rudely spoken to. Slamming down our drinks . I had booked a table which was not set out . If your busy that is not my problem. Maybe teach there staff some customer service. Appalling behaviour.

The previous reviews did not give an accurate picture of the restaurant. We had a good Sunday lunch, well cooked and presented. The vegetables were great al dente as we like and not mushy like some roast lunches. It was good value too. The service was efficient, friendly and helpful and the dining room pleasant.

Arrived shown table sat down jumped in to order drinks Ordered 3 starters 2 prawn cocktail and 1 baked mushrooms the mushrooms what there was of them 4 button mushrooms in a ramekin dish with 2x very thin slices of bread no butter ( £8 ) came out swimming in oily butter no garlic taste very disappointing for the price prawn cocktails were ok ordered 3 roosts dinners presented well but very ostentatious then to the veg 1 bowl between 3 adults asked for more reluctantly was told yes if needed them no offer of sauces to accompany said dinners for nearly £100 this meal was very disappointing

Last Sunday we booked the function room for my father’s memorial lunch. There were 32 of us for a 3 course meal. As it was a Sunday it was limited to a choice of roasts for the main course, with a large choice of starters and deserts. The whole meal was beautifully cooked. We all chose ahead of the day which was perfect as it didn’t detract from what we were there for. The whole thing was very professionally run. The serving of the meal was timed perfectly, which was some feat! The staff were unobtrusive, efficient, obliging and friendly. The room itself was perfect with its own toilets which made a great difference to our party due to health issues.

Took my mum for her birthday. They put us originally out in the small room as you come in. Very cold. Asked to move into main bar area where they did put 2 tables together for us. Ordered 4 roast dinners, and a sirloin steak (Presentation wasn’t great) we had to wait 10minutes for the vegetables to come to the tables. The dauphine potatoes looked over cooked and bland. Chef came out to explain the potatoes as we’d never heard of them before. Appeared very scruffy. Denim style apron looked unclean. No one obvious front of house. Bar staff seemed very disorganised. Ordered pudding, waited 10 minutes for someone to come out and say there was no apple pie left, waitress seemed very put out when we said there was nothing on the menu he fancied. Waited a further 15 minutes for 3 puddings, to be told they’d be another few minutes. Decided to pay our bill and leave. Overall impressions were great, and we wouldn’t return which is a shame as places like this need the locals in winter to keep these places functioning and above water. The place was overall very clean

We visited on the Monday evening of half term week, our 9 yr old enjoyed her food, my daughter (15) found the Chicken Ceaser salad with was tasteless, my wife had a baguette that wasn't't very nice with dip chips that were greasy, I had the pie and found a fibre in it, I can't claim it to be a hair as I couldn't see it properly as I use a white stick, didn't alert the rest of my party as I didn't want them to feel as ill as I did. Service slow and inattentive, my wife has vowed never to step foot in here again!

Today 5/11/22I went to the ship inn in new Romney and was disgusted with the quality of the food and the way it was cooked . Three times I had to ask for table water at the outset with incorrect orders for drinks ordered . Staff need training in hospitality and listening skills . The starters were prawn cocktail where cheap tiny prawns were used and a glimpse of cray fish and that was suspect and expensive for cheap poor quality ingredients. The mains were even worse The burgers are very poor quality with no effort in presentation. The burger was the cheapest dry meat I’ve ever seen . The bacon was dry , burnt and old. The cheese was a cheap square from a processed pack . The bun was stoggy and cheap , toasted to hide the fact . I had the liver . This resembled boot leather it was disgusting. The place was not even busy, god help the cook(not chef) when it is . He should be ashamed of himself, dishing up food that a 10 year old could improve on . When these were highlighted, the waitress said , I quote , “ two people had it today and it was alright “. They did exchange it for a piece of Cod , that was just blandly slapped on the plate with a few chips. Yet again no pride in the quality and no effort . The menu is put together with flowered up cheapness . This is a place to avoid for food .

staying locally so popped in for lunch we had ham egg and chips beautiful but the beef sandwich was a disaster the fries nice the salad beautifully dressed but the sandwich had been sat under the warmer so slightly dried, the beef which I could eat was lovely but way too much of it was fatty and gristle but worse of all the dreadful vegetable spread on it. Popped in today really not sure what to expect i came under old management and was not overwhelmed alas today the produce and the quality of the meals were wonderful. A simple but inviting menu i had one of the specials which was lovely and the wife had the gammon which i can tell you was perfect. You're cook is wonderful. Youre menu is great . Very good meal with part of my family the meal and choice of meats very good, on a personal note my only point that I would pick up on is that I felt that the food and plates could be hotter, and that the vegetables that where served separate again could be hotter and served at the same time as the main part of the meal. I have used this hotel before but is the first time since the change. Still very good and very well priced will be back again.

Great refurb but staff are just not bothered with customers. The man who we assumed was the manager knew nothing about the menu. He questioned our time we had booked even though the pub was nearly empty . And, why serve a salad with ham, egg and chips???? We have visited once a month since we moved here but not again, staff are extremely disinterested in customers so why should we spend money here?

My wife and I popped in for a quiet drink just after they opened but left before we wanted to as it was cold, sterile and unwelcoming. They have made a centrepiece of a large open fire, which was not lit. The radiators were not on. At one point there were 2/3 staff about but ignored us waiting at the bar for a drink. It is a great shame that what many regard as one of the key accommodation providers for Romney Marsh presents such a disappointing experience. If for whatever reason, they do not have the heating or staff on for an 11 am opening, then they might to better not to open until 12 noon.

I booked for a Sunday Carvery for six of us. The website described it as a carvery, the menu described it as a carvery, so we were shocked to just have the meal served to us. We could choose one meat, which when served was three slices, or choose more than one for a £2 surcharge. Those that chose more than one meat, got just one slice of each, in fact that cost more for less! There was no stuffing to accompany the turkey, and no English mustard, just a mild yellow mustard to accompany the beef. There was no choice of vegetables, just a dish of mixed to share, and no peas with it. We discovered that the large sliced un-enticing looking vegetable was swede, surely it could have been mashed or cubed. £16.95 for a two course carvery which was not as described and very definitely over priced. We won’t return, despite it being very local and much nicer in the past.

Definitely wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone else. Booked up a table for 10 of us for my Mum’s Birthday meal & everyone had a complaint about the dinners. Firstly the vegetables came out in one dish between 10 people to share, had to ask for peas as there was no mention of what vegetables they had on the menu, by the time the vegetables had arrived the meat was cold, there was hardly any gravy to go around, the potatoes were covered in garlic (still no mention of this on the menu either). I didn’t realise that I was chewing on the meat for 10 minutes that the string was still attached to the Turkey! When I complained about it she simply took the dish away to show the Chef & I didn’t receive an apology or hear any more about it! Nobody could eat the Beef as it was very fatty & full of gristle, as you only get 2 slices of meat it didn’t make much of a meal, we also bought our own food for the baby & asked for just jelly for dessert when the young girl bought it out the jelly was covered in ice cream! We explained that the baby was allergic to ice cream & she then rolled her eyes & told us she would take the ice cream off, she bought it back 5 minutes later with the ice cream just scraped off, she promised us there was no ice cream on it even though you could clearly see it dripping down to the bottom of the jelly! She then changed it with a bad attitude & again no apology from her, she made us feel that it was our fault that we should’ve mentioned the allergy when we ordered the dessert, this is why we ordered just jelly! When the bill came out we refused to pay for all of it & she continued to argue with us & couldn’t see anything wrong with the meal, even though half of it had the string inside! All she kept repeating was that the staff was very young & didn’t know what they were doing! It doesn’t matter how old they are the Customer Service was very poor! We left there still very hungry & it ruined my Mum’s Birthday meal wish we had stayed in & cooked! Never again!

well where do we start the roast potatoes where coated in garlic and does not say anything on the menu about that. the roast beef was more fat than meat. by the time the vegetables arrived our food was cold. the customer service from the young girls was very poor and you don't expect an attitude when your complaining that they messed up more than once . I would never return and I don't recommend this at all.

Had dinner tonight, liver was lovely, my wife had the burger and loved it especially the fries, staff were fantastic, efficient and friendly, I can wholly recommended the sticky toffee pudding, and happy hour goes on for four hours. Can’t praise this place enough

We called in by chance on a Saturday lunchtime. Went for chicken and salmon salads. The salads were rather crisp and tasteless and the potato slices were on the chilly side. However good coffee and over 60s get a reduction of 20% on the food element. I have to say that the place looks recently decorated and has a conservatory and outside eating area. We were made to feel welcome and probably would go back.

I went to the ship just expecting the average pub food and not a brilliant choice of vegitarian food. However I was very much surprised! The Sunday roast looked lovely and the food was pricey but worth it. I will definitely be going there again.

I will never go to this place again for a meal. Their prices on their menu is way to expensive, food has no taste, Yorkshire pudding look disgusting, never mind eating them.

My family thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday Roast, freshly cooked, with as much veg anyone could possibly eat. The customer service was excellent with a lovely ambience In the restaurant. Will definitely be going back

We booked lunch here for 6 adults and 4 children. It was very quiet. The staff were so friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived. The kids loved the pool table and fusball this while waiting for their food. We were sat in the restaurant out the back rather than the pub, probably as we were a big group. It was a nice space but big and as we were the only ones there it felt a bit lifeless and chilly. Food was served quickly and was good portion and very tasty. Would visit again if in the area.

We were looking for authentic pub food. This is not where you find it. Despite a pleasant atmosphere before 9pm, the place turns into some kind of a cheap disco after. Although always nice, the staff is not able to handle the most simple requests. The food is majorly underseasoned, meat is horribly overcooked. I am very sorry to leave such a bad review, but it just wasn‘t good.

We stayed here last minute when we visited the Sound mirrors. It cost around £80 with breakfast. We drank in the bar which stocked good ales, had an evening meal which was nice but then we went to the room.....room 7. There is a weird door behind the bed head, I discovered that this is where the water tank is. It seems that all the water for the other rooms comes from here, soooo whenever anyone flushed, used a tap or the shower the noise was awful. Don’t get me wrong the staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good but that rooms noise was terrible.

I attend the Ship for a Saturday afternoon meal with my wife and wished I hadn't. The food when it arrived was cold we asked for a Greek salad and it came covered /swimming in balsamic vinegar and olives when we asked for no olives . Asked for nachos and we got those with nothing else on them? the sweet potato fries were soft and warm. all in all £25 wasted will not return,

This is the first bad review I have ever made, however our experience on Saturday 18th, lunchtime was not good. when asked if I could have a childs meal as I was not that hungry, I was told no, so ordered for my hubby and Granddaughter, a childs meal and an adults meal. My husband decided we would not stay and went to pay bill. They changed their minds and let me have a child's portion of scampi and chips. We then waited an hour for this, fair enough if the restaurant/pub was busy but as we could only see one table of six eating, and only perhaps two customers at the bar it seemed along wait. Staff seemed lack luster, shame as its our local pub, will think twice about going back in future

I have to start this review by saying that I rarely write reviews and have had many nice family meals in this local establishment in the past.

Ate here on 4th July for the first time. We were very pleasantly surprised that it felt very warm and welcoming staff were very friendly and helpful. When our food arrived it was well presented hot and very tasty. We will defiantly be going again.

The 2 members of staff seemed to be rushed off their feet working the bar & serving meals hence they made a few errors with our order. When the food came the broccoli was nearly raw 1 steak wasn't cooked as asked for & the burger wasnt cooked completely. When we ordered the deserts he didn't know what a possett was & when it came it was minus cream which on reflection was good because the people who had cream said it was too thick, not fresh & much too big a serving. When the bill came it was wrong! Not impressed as had better food there before

It was well after 8 and we were worried that we might not get anything. Bangers & Mash and Burger plus Pulled Pork ~ both very tasty and served promptly and pleasantly.

Lovely trip to New Romney, saw the Steak Night board outside the Ship Hotel, thought we would give it a go. My wife and I had the T-Bone Steak which was cooked perfectly, absolutely delicious. Free wine too which was nice. Homemade Pate starter was also very good. Will be returning Sunday for the Roast Dinner

We had an evening meal during the week and ordered three tapas and the pate to share. The pate was very bland which was a disapointment as the last time we came it was one of the best we have tried (change of chef maybe?) and at £6.95, two small pieces of toast was a bit pricey. The tapas were good but the meatballs were indercooked and when we complained the waiter wasn't overly concerned.

Lovely Sunday lunch for my husband’s birthday. Managed all 16 of us very well. Definitely recommend.

After coming 2 hours to visit a friend for a few days in Romney we decided to try this place as my friend had wanted to try it. We were greeted with enthusiasm and were seated accordingly.

This visit was exceptional, nice reception at the bar, barmaid was very attentive showed us to our table and took our order .

Myself and six friends went for a meal in the Ship last Wednesday and without exception the meal was excellent. We all thoroughly the evening.

We used to come here on a Sunday for their Carvery. They have stopped doing that and replaced a Sunday roast with a choice of ribeye beef, slow cooked pork belly and lamb shank. Vegetables were a bit too greasy, roast potatoes were cooked but not crispy and I wish they would not put so much gravy on the plate but serve it in little jug on the side. Quite expensive too. Very disappointed.

Stayed overnight at the Ship. Although the pub is old, the bar and dining area have been modernised very well to provide a more contemporary feel but not in a brash way. The evening meal was excellent and breakfast very good (although maybe have little jars of preserves rather than those nasty plastic pots with tear off lids?), both were cooked fresh. Lovely staff, unobtrusive yet helpful service.

Booked for lunch on Saturday and were given a very nice table in the conservatory. Lovely warm and friendly welcome which is so important. We all enjoyed our food and will definitely return.

food that should have been hot came up cold i think it is cooked and then left untill a member of staff can be bothered to get it

6 of us went here for a Sunday lunch..We had a starter and the mozzarella in the salad was questionable,,,the cheapest of the cheap was mentioned at the table.5 had a carvery and the beef was tough, the pork was really fatty,yorkshire puddings were burnt black.Other person had a burger it was sooo dry .To be fair the staff were nice and polite.It was not cheap either!!!!.I will not be going back here.Shame as it was a birthday celebration

Liked this one, bit tatty from the outside but don't let that deter you. A warm friendly welcome awaits you. Different areas offer a different environment depending on your group. We visited with three generations and it worked well

I always take my mum here for lunch on her birthday the staff are very nice and helpful.One of the staff told us about the specials of the day.Me and my mum always have the scampi, but this time we decided to have something different. Lovely food.A lady who was on her work experience if we would be interesting in a dessert.Was ask if we would like tea or coffee. This show me that this is good customer service. Would come back again for lunch.

I booked here as a base for working during the day in Romney and Hastings. I had asked if would be possible to just let ^^ out for a wee at lunchtime n was assured not a problem.. When i returned from work, she had been given so much love, care and attention, cuddles and strokes.... i was so touched by their genuine kindness. My room was lovely - clean and modern but comfortable and homely. I hate how corporates nail the sheet to the bed at the bottom - this felt like home :) firm and also softer pillows and loads of snuggly white towels. The food was always good and the staff, including manager Clare, were just great :) Friendly, warm and welcoming, no sulky faces unlike some places. they treated me like one of the family. I would stay here again in a heartbeat - nice tv and dvd player if you want that, bed is divine - havent slept so well in ages :) Radiator - you turn it on or off as you wish, window open as much as you like - no aircon horrors like the corporates places. Me and my little ^^ felt home from home and safe. Not the sort of place to attract undesirables - even the locals in the bar and beer garden were lovely.
