We spent a cozy Sunday evening at The Famous Ship Inn. With candles on the tables and excellent beer, we had a great time.

We had booked a room in the adjoining B&B (highly recommended) and also reserved a table at the Famous Ship Inn. Our drive from our home Devon took us over 7 hours (thank you M25 and M20) so we were only just in time for our reservation. The inn itself is very old but we were shown to a table in a modern conservatory on the south side. The food and service were impeccable and the place was doing a great trade, which created a warm and enjoyable atmosphere. This was an excellent dining experience.

We used to love coming to The Ship as it was known when run by the lovely family who owned it previously. The service was great and prices reasonable. We were regular customers. Used to love the contemporary decor which really suited the amazing space with a great sea view. The decor now is brown furniture, mismatched, depressing and creates a completely different and depressing ambiance. Prices now are inflated and food often poor value. Our experience yesterday has put us off coming here for good. We arrived lunchtime and sat up on the balcony at the only free table which was dirty and still had loads of pooling rainwater on it from the previous night. When we kindly asked the waitress to wipe the table so we could put our drinks down she reluctantly and half heartedly wiped it but left it still soaking saying ‘it will dry in the sun.’ The water was dripping from our glasses as we drank. When I later asked a waiter for a menu I was told ‘you can get it from the bar downstairs.’ No niceties here. I hadn’t realised that you’re supposed to order from the bar. I assumed that the prices charged would include waitress service as was the case with the previous owners. Ok this is the new system but the attitude stank and on that note we left without ordering any food. Tbh it didn’t look worth waiting for anyway. Oh and btw they are cramming the tables in so it feels very squashed in the main restaurant.

Beautiful October day so lunch on the terrace seemed like a great idea. Great location. Friendly service despite being a fryer down in the kitchen and shuffling with service. However the food was not nearly as good. Sausage roll was tasty. Pork belly bites were OK but small and not really much about them. Buttermilk chicken loaded fires only had four small bits of chicken, and not much cheese. Beef Burger was very poor. Dry and small, and a cheese sauce that I was not a fan off at all. Would not recommend going there for the food. Sadly.

Service was very slow, we were a table of 9 arriving at 5.30pm and our main courses were not served until nearly 7pm. We were the first people in the restaurant and it only started filling up after our meals were served so the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. The gap in bringing out our meals meant some in our group had nearly finished their meals before all the meals were served (the last to come was the one child's meal). The choices on the children’s menu were disappointing, everything came with chips except the sausages (which were burnt) and mash and no vegetable accompaniments. Would not recommend.

Had a lovely day in Folkstone and dropped in for late lunch. We opted for the Famous Ship burger, everything about it was good except the beef patties. They are minced steak but unfortunately the cut of meat used must be cheap, it had chunks in it and far too much sinew giving it a chewy overly firm texture. My partner left half of the pattie as it was to much for her. I love the pub and the food but if you want to have a decent burger it should be moist and not chewy with pea size chunks at all. Has the chef actually tried it? I will be certainly visiting again in the future though.

Looked forward to using this pub again after a long gap. Started well with a very pleasant bar person/waiter. Downhill after the starter. One main course was cold before we got started, the steak teriyaki was mainly noodles hardly any vegetables and tough meat (beef) two pieces I had to remove from my mouth because I couldn’t swallow it despite chewing till my jaws ached. The fried chicken was very dry with enough chips for a regiment! Such a pity. Didn’t make too much fuss as hopefully this was just a bad day. Reading some of the other reviews though this seems to be more than a one off.

Did not stay overnight but stopped for a quick drink and enjoyed the sea view from the terrace. Good service, place was generally clean and pleasant. Only slight negative point was the rusty frame under the tables, which had potential to injure bare legs or feet.

Table booked for 6.30, waited to be seated for about 10 mins. We had already decided what we were having but took a little while for them to take our order. We got our starters about 7.35, which were delicious. I had salmon bites and my husband had duck croquettes. We waited a while for main and asked waiter if there was a problem as we had to be home by 8.30 for our children. He said the chef was sorry for the delay. We got our main course about 8.15, so had to rush eating it. I had lamb shank which was ok, could have done with a thicker gravy and more seasoning. My husband had breaded chicken and chips with slaw and spicy sauce, he said it was good. We did want pudding as my husband’s favourite sticky toffee was on the menu but we didn’t have time. We walked through to the bar to pay and waiter was on his phone behind the bar.

We visited here for dinner whilst on holiday. The food was excellent, the stir fry and sea bass in particular. The restaurant view looking out to the sea was lovely. The service was a bit slow but the lovely lady serving us explained that they had received a lot of orders at once, which had created a delay in the kitchen. She was very apologetic and gave us a drink as compensation, which she didn't have to. We've no idea what the previous review is going on about. We watched them moaning at the poor lady, giving her a very unnecessarily hard time, but in the end it looked like their plates were empty. Each to their own, I guess. We would definitely recommend The Famous Ship Inn.

First off, after ten minutes we had to search out somseone to take our drinks order. Why couldn't the staff member who showed us to our table ask us what we wanted to drink like other establishments do? The starters arrived fairly quickly but the wait for our mains was so long we had to chase up a staff member. When it arrived, two mains had vegetables that were tepid at best. The chicken snitzel was burnt around the edges. The same staff member didn't take our polite complaint seriously but grudgingly said she would take it off the bill. When the bill arrived the chicken was still on the bill. She said, well you ate it didn't you. Summoning the manager, he apologised, saying they were very busy. The restaurant was half full. He took the chicken dish off the bill plus a round of drinks. The same staff member's final comment was, you've been trouble all night, I don't need it. Outrageous. Staff training needed or perhaps she shouldn't work in hospitality.

Went here for lunch with friends who had driven down from London. It’s the first time they’ve been since the original owners retired. We all agreed we preferred the more contemporary style that it had been, which suited the location more in our opinion. However, still a good location with a sea view. The food is good but as most places, very expensive nowadays. This makes it even more important that the food is relatively good value and well cooked. Two of our mains were ok though nothing special. Two of us had the sea bass which was very well cooked and fresh. We decided to share starters due to the pricing. My girlfriend and I shared a flatbread with beetroot and goats cheese. Sounds good? Well if I were you I’d avoid it! The flat bread was small, dry and hard and you would need a microscope to see the beetroot and goats cheese! Literally a minimal scraping of both! I Honestly, it was enbarrassing. For this you get charged £9!!! The profit on it must be enormous! It really is daylight robbery and puts us off going back. If we weren’t a party of 4 and celebrating a special occasion we would have complained. I really don’t know how people can afford all these inflated prices. We are wondering if we can keep doing it ourselves. Sadly, not sure we will return even though it is very convenient for us and we were always regulars when the lovely original owners were there.

Enjoyed a very nice relaxed lunch here with family. The outside of the building could do with some TLC and so creates a first impression that isn’t entirely positive however once inside I was largely reassured. We sat in the side room of the bar as we had the dog with us, but this area has a nice nautical ambience about it so was in no way disappointing. Food had to be ordered at the bar but the service was pleasingly polite and efficient. A request for a bit of chicken in a bowl for the dog (very fussy eater and doesn’t do dog food!) initially raised some eyebrows but was accommodated at minimal extra cost. The food itself (steak and ale pie and fish and chips) was nicely presented, of good quality, and reasonably priced, All in all pretty good and certainly somewhere we will revisit.

We were excited to see The Ship in famous new hands, especially as the renovations feel sensible and if good quality. Unfortunately we were a little disappointed with what was served up on our plates. Pork belly was hard work, yorkies a lifeless powdery crust, roast potatoes dry and overdone. Altogether felt overcooked and warmed over. Not v good value for £22 I’m afraid.

Popped in for a drink and lunch on a Saturday. Hoped to have a warming glass of Malbec. Unfortunately that on tap was ice cold and even the bottles were no where near the correct room temperature. I made a poor choice of food, Fritto Misto. Far too much batter/bread crumbs on cod bites, squid and whitebait. Really disappointing and not up to owners usual food quality compared to other venues. I have known and used the Ship for 30 years on and off. Visited recently and was ‘shocked’ at the recent refurbishment . The changes were inevitable I suppose, as the previous landlord had been talking about them for years, but in my view the character of the pub has changed. I hasten to add anyone new there will be pleased (it’s still a great pub), but for us longstanding regulars it’s no longer ‘our’ Ship . Thankfully Caroline, one of long standing barmaids was there and coincidently another one was drinking there so that brought the old atmos back. Whilst I’m sure the new owners have done the right thing, I hope they do all they can to retain links to the past, especially for the winter local trade, for example opening the door to the ‘back bar’, and holding onto the many loyal staff. Still a great pub!!

Lovely refurbishment of the bar and dining areas. Well staffed. Lovely views of the sea from the rear restaurant. However, the Sunday lunch was over cooked. The starters were very good but the main dishes were poor. It took 90 minutes to be served our main courses. We had to ask for drinks to be served. There was a delay in everyone getting their food once service started. I’ve definitely had better elsewhere. Such a shame. Really hoped it would be on par with others in the chain.

Visited the Ship Inn for the first time today since covid began and was very much looking forward to it. Was profoundly disappointed. We ordered the Sunday roasts (which we have had many times before in the past at the The Ship) but sadly the meat was cold and the vegetables had distinctly been lying around for a long while before coming to table. My husbands fish and chips were not entirely fresh and the chips were rubbery and tasted re-heated. Finally the deserts that were ordered were dreadful. A crème brûlée with a sugar crust that was so thick it would break teeth and a centre that was curdled. The other strawberry desert was inedible. We were just so disappointed. The waitresses however were absolutely lovely and did their best to look after us but overall we would not return. Very sad as it was always such a favourite.

This pub seems to have reinvented itself recently as an eating venue, and it's quite attractive, though it doesn't present especially well to the outside world (no menu outside, for example). There's a very nice seafront roof terrace, which is great for better weather, but the indoor restaurant, towards the back of the pub is also light and airy and has very good sea views. The menu is a mixture of 'pub specials' and slightly more adventurous and modern options, and the execution ranges between decent and excellent (we've noticed some degree of variation on three visits). Service is good—polite and attentive at worst, and positively warm and engaged at best.

We stayed here for one night while visiting Folkestone. The room we had was on the ground floor and was really cosy and lovely. The website photos didn't really do it justice. You're right on the sea front and we could see the sea crashing onto the shore. Very atmospheric. Because it was a cold November night we didn't use the room's deck area outside, with table and chairs, but that would have been a lovely thing to do in the summer. The room was incredible cosy considering what a horrible night it was. We went round to the restaurant and had one of the most delicious, perfectly cooked rump steaks I've ever had. The whole meal was delicious. The bar staff and regulars in the pub were friendly. Breakfast the next morning was cooked by the landlady (Wendy I think?) and that too was delicious. Their slogan is ‘a nice place for nice people’ and it is a lovely airy restaurant at the back of the inn which overlooks the beach and had a sun terrace open in the summer. We’ve been going here for years and it’s always a good experience. Family run and The standard of food and service is consistent, reliable -not to mention served with a smile. There’s also the original cosy bar leading off the High Street serving pub food meals.

Super variety of home cooked steaks. Great wine list. Good mixture of home made and bought in food. But no children in the bars!

Decided to go in for dinner one evening the restaurant was empty only a few people scattered around. No staff to be seen I approached the waitress who I found in the kitchen and asked if we could have a menu. Rudely she replied she had to check her booking to see if there was space and to give her 5 minutes. There was only two of us!! So we sat in the bar got a drink then outside then back in the bar after 30 minutes of avoiding us, even though I had informed the barman exactly where I was nothing ... the tables were sticky and lots of un collected glasses on nearly all the tables outside and in small back bar. Didn’t bother attempting going in again even though I was on holiday for a week.

We waited over an hour for our food, the waitress explained there was a problem with a fan in the kitchen! Then 1 of the mussels ordered was fine the other they were all closed and dried out! Makes me wonder whether they kept the dish warm and it dried out! I mentioned it and they did take it off the menu! But a quick lunch out turned out a disaster, really disappointing

Visited yesterday for Sunday lunch with family, service quick, portions very good, crispy roast potatoes, homemade yorkshire pudding and vegetables to share, plenty of gravy which pleased my father in law! Very reasonably priced too worked out a little £27 per head for main, dessert and two-three drinks each. Will be back again to eat here.

Have eaten here on a couple of occasions and can recoomed it as fantastic sea food resturant. The Resturant side is very contempary, with sea views over the beach, whilst the pub which is reached from the high street, is very tradtional in appearace but does some excelelnt beer. Well worth a visit!

We often lunch there because of the sea view from the dining room and the good food. Interesting menu, fresh ingredients, well chosen wines or proper beer!

Haven't been here for a while and have no idea why. We've definitely been missing out. Came today for a roast and it was the best we've had since living here. Lovely staff, especially Anita, and a sea view to top it all off. Will be back very soon

It's known locally that the landlord can be a bit snippy at times, buy today he said hello and smiled! Great stuff. Saturday lunch in the restaurant, the two staff were busy but dealt with things professionally and were friendly. Food was enjoyable, menu restricted for lunchtime, but some good choices. Scallops were great and the local fish, and chips were excellent. Don't be put off by some reviewers - it's a pub restaurant worth visiting.

Service good and good menu, but expensive. Had a 2 course lunch for c.£15.excluding drinks. Good view of the sea from the restaurant. In Spring and Summer there is an open upper deck above the restaurant, which is potentially good for eating al fresco when the weather is fine.

The landlady and the stair carpet should be changed! The stairs smelled of urine and were filthy and the landlady suggested I go elsewhere. We were shown up narrow stairs to our double room with a view which hadn’t got one. ‘This was not what we booked’ I complained. There was a small room with a single bed across the landing with a skylight view of the sea for our use. A bit of a stretch in the description for a room with a view! Pleased to say we were just passing through. Old is fine, but smells and stains unforgivable.

Went in for dinner 20 minutes before they opened for dinner. I know awful. Told kids not allowed. And really sarcastically told ‘they are my rules’ kid was asleep in buggy not exactly running around and he had no other customers in the bar to disturb!!!

We had a pleasant time there, they serve an excellent roast dinner and a yummy desert. I had roasted lamp and a chocolate tart. They also make their own bear, the price is also very reasonable. My only criticism is that there are not many options in their menu besides the fact that they don't have an online menu.

Looks a little tatty from outside but I guess that down to its proximity to the sea. But inside, the owners and staff were really friendly and helpful. The food was great, the selection of real ales and local ciders would satisfy most. The room was clean, comfortable and overlooked the sea. Really enjoyed it.

We popped in on a very sunny sunday afternoon, the outside terrace looked very inviting and we were desperately hungry. Having eaten here before we thought it would be lovely. We walked into an empty bar with a man behind the till. He totally ignored us for several minutes, not even acknowledging our presence, we asked if we could eat up on the terrace but were told we could not because we had our (very well behaved and quiet) 10 year old with us. Now, I can understand it if it were busy but there were only two people up there. I could also understand it of an evening and on a Friday and Saturday...but on a sunday afternoon? The man was very rude and for that reason, sadly, we will probably never return.

My Father invited me at have a Christmas Lunch with Mum he and two old friends. The table was booked for 1.30pm and we were offered the Christmas Menu and the main menu. Please remember this is not fine dinning and not up to my normal expectations of Pub Food. The Christmas menu was £20.00 for two courses despite there being three on offer - so the waitress had to work out the actual costs - what not make it £25.00 for the 3 courses? I had the Sausage and Mash - potato was packet and the gravy was very nice with Onion and this added a nice taste to the meal. The starter was Carrot and Coriander soup with bread - warm - id have preferred garlic - but not offered. The sweet was homemade Ice cream - creamy - not sure it was homemade as it looked as if it came out of a mould. All in all service was good but the food let the place down again since my last visit with my parents. The atmosphere was cold as no heating seemed to me on - or very little. My legs were cold by the time we left. (Mum and Dad are in their 80s) Not a good experience

Great pub, great Beer the food was top notch (I’d recommend the loaded fries) more of a main than a side. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. Fantastic value!

My sister and brother-in-law stayed at this hotel last night, and the security guard on break inappropriately and without invitation interrupted their dinner to discourage them from moving to Hythe, which quickly became a lecture on politics and ridiculous conspiracy theories - in what world is it appropriate to approach a mixed race couple and instigate discussions about Trump, racism, the "war with muslims," and gun crime? Absolutely appalling behaviour.
