Called in with family on a day trip, what a wonderful tearoom, full of character, we were seated by the window and had a lovely view of Northallerton, the waitress was very friendly and the food was delicious, all locally sourced and fantastic quality, cooked to perfection and the homemade cakes for dessert were divine 😋 will definitely visit again on our way through the town.

Had not been in here since COVID but decided to give ourselves a treat as was always quality. I can not believe how downhill this has gone, we both ordered the breakfast and two teas was the server brought the tea she said food won't be long. Well it was 35 minutes before we got it so instead of lying tell customer of waiting times so they have a choice. Breakfast was no more than average and for what it was could have got the same quality elsewhere and cheaper. Needless to say we won't be back.

Have to a visit here didn’t match my expectation. Staff were lovely and were friendly and efficient but that was the highlight really. The entrance at the top of the stairs is a little strange and you feel a complete transition from the fancy shop downstairs, into a typical caf upstairs. The glass counter with pre-made cakes wrapped up in plastic and whiff of chip fat (not even sure if there were chips on the menu) didn’t really set a good first impression. Others here have mentioned a short menu, this is true and for me isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I did find the menu a bit odd. Only kids menu option was sandwich. Child had fried eggs from the breakfast menu and that was fine. Husband had a hotdog but seemed strange it was served with salad and crisps. Sausage was good - bread I would have expected better. For me, I quite fancied a ploughman’s style lunch. There was a 2 person thing that I obviously wasn’t going to order myself. There was also a pate platter that I nearly asked if they could change pate for cheese but instead went for a warm cheesy scone. It was on the same part of the menu so I was surprised to find it came with just chutney. Staff were very easy to offer a salad accompaniment. With the limited menu I just thought it a shame they weren’t making the most of the wealth of fresh cheese and meats downstairs. What about a platter option with a choice for the main part of it (eg choice of cheese/meat/pate/fish). I’m rooting for this place to make some improvement to the menu and sort out the cake counter cos I feel it could easily offer so much more.

Awful how this cafe has changed in such a short time. When visiting Northallerton this was the go to cafe. Menu now is just so lack lustre, service similar (sign of the times employing all teens - not so bad if supporting their development but if this is to save money...it shows in the menu). Had the Masham Banger - used to be in a quality bun, now just stodge plonked on the table..."there you go"...like it was a favour! Lady on a nearby table had soup but left it because the bread bun (same) put her off! Great deli shop only saving grace now - please don't let that go to seed too. What happened Lewis and Cooper?

We've come to Lewis and Coopers for years for a spot of lunch. Unfortunately, today will be the last time for us. We've noticed over the last 2-3 years how standards have declined. The menu used to be extensive. We used to love the Ploughman's platter and the rarebit - both are gone from the menu now with a very limited choice. They used to offer specials - no specials any more. We had a sandwich, a hotdog and two cold drinks. It was £23. The traffic light system said green so more people kept turning up despite there being no free tables. The staff were very busy yet they were clearly overwhelmed. The separate payment area has gone so now everyone has to crowd around the serving counter to pay - makes no sense. No more loyalty stamp scheme. The table next to us had to go to the counter twice - once to ask for someone to take their order and a second time to ask about their drinks. I get that times are hard and L&C want to help staff maintain this tea room but it really needs a total rethink, especially given the competition in Northallerton that has opened up in recent years. Sorry L&C - I wish I could be more positive, I really do.

We are regular visitors to Lewis and Cooper tea room - we eat here every time we visit Northallerton which is usually about once a month. However, this is the first time that I feel I must write a review as I am really concerned about the drop in standards. It was busy - fair enough - but the staff were arguing amongst themselves the entire time we sat down. Orders were mixed up, one member of staff was sending people away and telling them to come back in 30 minutes time, whilst another would seat people immediately despite the long wait on food. The table near us complained because their scone was mouldy and another table had a pot of tea delivered twice, after receiving the incorrect order to begin with, because the staff just weren't communicating. Food and drinks orders were left sitting on the bench for a good 10 minutes before someone came to serve them; the bell was being tapped incessantly for service but the staff were just too busy. In the midst of all this chaos, a man arrived to collect some knives from the kitchen and deliver a new set?! This resulted in more confusion as someone had to be sent for to authorise this. Who collects the kitchen knives in the middle of lunch service?! When the food eventually arrived, it was delicious as always and the two ladies who served us were very pleasant and polite; they were definitely putting a brave face on a steessful situation. We decided to eat up fast and pay as the place was just too chaotic. It's clear to me that something is going wrong here; last time we came to eat here in November, we had to go elsewhere as there was no hot food available, just tea and cakes. I've never known this happen before and we've been coming for about 4 years. Even the usually cheery shop staff downstairs seemed downbeat today and the pricing on many items is incorrect. We had to point this out at the till or else we'd have been overcharged. I'm willing to set aside today's visit as a one-off but please start listening L&C or I'm afraid we'll be dining and shopping elsewhere if this is the a similar case next time.

My partner in dine and I sought refuge from Christmas shopping (the Aladdin’s Cave downstairs was very busy) and it was time for brunch. The tea rooms are deceptively spacious and we were shown to a table promptly. The menu was reasonable with a range of hot, cold and savoury dishes. The Cakes and scones did look most appealing! I opted for the Yorkshire Breakfast and at £10.25 it was at the pricier end of the scale, but the quality and taste of the ingredients made up for that. My partner in dine had ham, cheese and tomato omelette that vanished rapidly. The tea (Earl Grey and Breakfast) was excellent.Service was exceptionally efficient but not at all rushed. We will be back to try some of the other dishes.

I ordered a latte and a cheese scone ... the waitress suggested a warmed cheese scone with cheese and chutney. Sounded interesting so ordered. The coffee came reasonably quickly. I'd nearly finished it when eventually the scone arrived. Burnt at edges, stone vokd mainly in the centres of both sides and huge chunks of cold cheese. The scone and cheese were inedible. Whilst I was waiting they started telling customers there would be a 30 minute wait for food. So kitchen inefficient/ can't cope _ something wrong. Overall an unpleasant experience

After the demise of quality service a few years ago we stopped using the cafe however decided to give it a try again for breakfast. We shouldn’t have bothered. Arriving at 9:15am there were no other customers waiting and only two tables occupied. We waited at the top of the stairs ‘to be seated’ and were studiously ignored by at least three waiting staff at the counter. Eventually a pleasant waiter came upstairs and acknowledged us saying he would attend to us shortly. We were shown to a table in a rather empty room, the fact that all the other customers were still wearing their coats should have told us something, the cafe was cold. Our food order, eggs benedict, was cold on cold plates and smothered in copious amounts of bland hollandaise sauce, consequently we left half of the meal. Basically this cafe was unwelcoming (both the staff attitude and in appearance with a jumble of tatty furniture), it was too cold and served cold, expensive food. We definitely won’t be giving it a further try, there are far better cafes in Northallerton providing infinitely better customer service, comfortable, warm accommodation and quality food at realistic prices.

Not sure why the owners have decided to turn a lovely “Tea Room” into a typical cafe???Instead of being shown to a table, choosing what you want and having the personal touch through a waiter/waitress to attend to you, Lewis and Cooper have now gone down market and become an average cafe. One of the main things that made it stand apart from other typical cafes was the service. The food’s fine and was nice enough but the prices still reflect the service you previously paid for. It’s wasn’t exactly Betty’s standard anyway, but has gone down market and you’ll do as well now if you go to any other ordinary coffee shop or cafe in town (except Betty’s of course who know what service is).

My husband & I visited this morning Sunday 22/9/19 - we always consider it a treat. NO NO NO! We always enjoy sitting at a table preferably near a window, we always order the same things - a strong cuppa & toast for hubby & a hot chocolate plus toasted tea loaf for me. Today we were informed that we had to find a table, look at the menu, go to the serving desk to order & pay WHAT?!? Our love of the tearoom includes politely being led to a table, our order being taken by one of your lovely staff then after enjoying the lovely food/drinks going to the pay desk where one of your staff always politely asks if everything was ok. Today the lady & gentleman serving were lovely as always but our visit didn’t feel the same, the experience was lacking something. Where the pay desk used to be now has an extra bench & table, there was a set of red curtains at the end wall pinned together obviously hiding something - it looked amateurish & unprofessional. You’re nor a coffee shop, you’re a traditional tea room. If we had wanted a coffee shop/ cafe there was plenty of choice outside. Why make these changes? It’ll be self service next! Cosy up your tea room again - get rid of plain boring beige walls, boring beige table covers etc.

Didn't go to the café but had a look around the shop. A great variety of produce available to buy both local and more further afield. Had a sandwich from the meat counter and one could have fed the two of us. Will be back again when next in the area.

Great place if you're looking for the unusual in the food line also quite a good selection of wine can be a bit pricey but then if it's unusual you're after I suppose you have to pay definitely worth a look inside

We normally visit this tea room for breakfast once a week. It’s usually very good, but over the last couple of weeks it has really gone to the dogs. Value for money is good and the contents are usually very fresh and well cooked. Not lately, we started to notice that the eggs were cold then the beans soon followed, we gave it one more try to suffer what has to be the worst breakfast we have ever had. All the usual there but to find it undercooked some of it cold and the whole thing swimming in grease was the last straw. I think the staff knew it was bad as they normally ask if everything is ok, not this time. We won’t be back

Called in for a coffee, while visiting Northallerton. Large tearoom above the shop, a bit ramshackle ! Quick efficient service, and nice food.

I have given this the highest rating because of the great food and lovely staff. However, the last few times we have been there we have endured cold air blasting out into the first seating area within the cafe. Today, two ladies near us moved because of this. I asked one of the staff why this was so, as it was a really cold morning. He told me that customers and staff have questioned this, and complained but no- one has acted upon it. I must ask WHY???

I could have spent hours in this shop so many things to choose from. After filling our basket with many delights we decided to visit the tearoom for brunch and we were not disappointed. I loved the food hamper ideas and will definitely be ordering one of these now I have seen and tasted the quality of some of the products.

Had a chicken wrap and an americano. The wrap was fantastic and the coffee they use is delicious. Serving staff were visibly busy but kept composure and fairly reasonably priced.

When I first went to Lewis & Cooper in the North East it was in Yarm, lovely little store that reminded me of William's in Sandbach in Cheshire. Now the store in Northalerton is something else, it is massive. The store goes on for ever and they sell everything foodie. The staff are very pleasant and helpful si it's one to visit if your in the area.

Went for breakfast and opted for the full Yorkshire breakfast. It arrived on a plate that was too small, the beans were served in a ramekin, the bacon was placed on top of itself, the eggs were greasy and folded over to get them to fit on the plate, the mushrooms were spread over all the other items - basically because the plate was too small! That said, the breakfast was disappointing, it was warm, not hot and I'm afraid to say that I have had far better breakfasts for half the £10 and a bit that this cost.

Popped in with the wife for a look around the shop and ended up having breakfast and a coffee. I am always hesitant about getting a Full English their so hit and miss, but this one was definitely a hit and cooked really well with good quality produce the Eggs Benedict were great too. Just not sure the lime flavour marshmallows in the hot chocolate were a good combination. Their own coffee blend was nice and I even bought some beans to take home. We will definitely be back to eat again.

For the last 12 years my daughter and I have drove the 30 miles through to Northallerton to do our (my) very last minute Christmas shopping. The start of this event being full English breakfast at Lewis and Cooper. Today was no exception and once again and exceptional breakfast was served up. Splendid food, well cooked and served in a calm atmosphere amidst the chaos that is Christmas eve shopping. My daughter was recently diagnosed as being Gluten intolerant and we were both very impressed at the concern and care by the staff and attention to details regarding the ingredients and information she was provided .

Went for lunch for the first time today. My husband had French onion soup which he said was delicious although they were a bit heavy handed with the onions and I had a Cheese omelette with salad which was also delicious. The chefs coleslaw was very very nice and I’m not a fan of coleslaw. The price was reasonable and the service was good. The shop below was amazing, it was full of very unusual foods and in fact it would probably be described as an upmarket food store. We will be going back x

Frist time here for a coffee. ..great coffee and surrounding but staff act in a strange way to customers, making them wait at the door to be seated when plenty of room and chatting to each other and totally ignoring waiting customers..heard several other customers taking about them...

Went to the tea rooms for lunch. It took a little while before we were seated but after that we were given a nice table with an extensive menu. Food came quickly once ordered. I had the Sharing Platter which was piled high with great cheese, meat, pies and scotch eggs, which was superb. My wife had a Rarebit which was excellent. Good selection of teas and coffees. We ended with cake - the fruit cake with a great wedge of Wensleydale was excellent. The treacle tart was great until half way through when we found what looked like the remains of pastry brush bristles inside the filling. To the staff’s credit it was taken off the bill and they were very apologetic. It was also very busy and I felt sorry for the staff who were running around trying to serve everyone - it felt like they needed more on. Otherwise a great lunch, would recommend.

Cracking food, had the English breakfast but your portion sizes are for a small adult/child Such a nice classy place where you can chill and dog friendly with a doggy water station

I have been here for the last 3 weeks on business for 2 nights a week, still 3 weeks to go 😀 Lovely welcome by everyone who has been on reception on all my visits, very helpful, friendly and they go that extra mile to help. The rooms I've stayed in so far are ( 2-10 and 31) which were very clean, cosy and well presented with everything you needed, Iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities. The only little issue was the shower door rollers kept coming loose, just life cycle replacement needs attention at some point. I could not fault any of the cleaning at all and that's very rare for me due to being a cleaning trainer for the NHS, hotels, schools and offices for 20 years. I meet some of the cleaning first thing on the morning and they were also very polite and always smiling. The bar area was comfortable, clean, all the staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant-bar is excellent, large portions, presented beautifully and very tasty...... 😋 I didn't have the breakfast , so i can't comment on that... Thank you so much for making me feel welcome, especially when I'm here on my own. I will miss coming here when my business in Northallerton comes to an end 😊

Latte coffee (with extra shot) allegedly large but certainly only medium, small piece of mass produced poor quality cake....£9.05 !!!!! Massively over priced. Waited to be seated and waited to give my order while the member of staff who should have been serving me filled in her paperwork and chatted with staff. My coffee when it arrived was covered in coffee grounds and was undrinkable. I took it back and the woman who served me was very polite apologised and served me quickly with another one. I must say she was the ONLY staff member who showed any customer care at all. If you want over priced drinks and cake along with a poor attitude from staff then pay them a visit. Otherwise I suggest giving them a wide berth!!

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.

We hebben net samen met vrienden voortreffelijk geluncht. Alle gerechten waren verrassend en super lekker. Is echt de (zeer korte) omweg waard.
