Kota used to just do tasting menus and the expansion to providing individual plates as well should have been a success, but it wasn’t. Previously my wife and I would have had the tasting menu, with her picking the fish options and me either the fish or meat. Now there are no alternatives, so we couldn’t order this and had to order the separate plates. These are styles like tapas, but we were told they could be ordered like starters and mains. Our ‘starters’ came up together and were good, then my wife’s ‘main’ came up, but mine didn’t and neither did her accompanying dish. These turned up about 10 mins after she had finished. Everything was good, but eating separately, rather spoils the meal. A ‘token’ free coffee doesn’t make up for a spoilt birthday meal. Had they have said that the plates were like those on the tasting menu, but served tapas style, one at a time, we would have known what to expect, and ordered dishes we both could eat, but being led to believe it was a la carte, led to a massive disappointment. It’s a shame, when good food gets a poor score because of other issues. Hopefully, as this is a change on their part, things will improve.

Amazing taster menu where I tried things I never thought I would ever eat! Such a lovely relaxed environment and we weren’t rushed at all. 3 hours later we left fully satisfied and waiting for the next menu. Definitely worth all the good praise and money.

After a significant menu re-vamp as well some subtle decor changes, Kota continues to produce delicious, creative food at sensible prices. The subtlety and care with flavours and attention to detail is superb and with the opportunity of a complete menu change, there are new and unusual (but very complementary) courses. Kota continues to create a charming environment with great service and wonderful food!

Well worth a second trip! I decided to gift my sister a trip to Kota as a Xmas present. We utilised the winter dining offer which was excellent value and topped up with some extras of our choosing (the potato and oyster fritter and an additional dessert). The food never disappoints, the service is fantastic. I love the ambience of the place- equally comfortable in a pair of jeans or a posh frock. I also really like that you can choose which menu to order from on the night adding to the flexibility. Would recommend to anyone

I think this was the best meal I have ever had. The night was a celebration with my parents after securing a new job role. We opted for the tasting menu. We ran out of adjectives for each course as they were all so yummy and amazing. The tasting menu feels like really good value. We each added an oyster fritter and my Dad opted for the additional cheese course. Also special mention for all of the waiting staff who were all so knowledgeable about each course. I made a mistake with the time of our booking so we were about 20 minutes late but we were made very welcome and seated immediately at a lovely table in the window. We all selected the tasting menu and boy we were not disappointed. Supplemented by oysters and potato and oyster fritters to start it’s not cheap but in my view it’s well worth the money. The attention to detail and the flavours of all the courses are just superb. A very special night out that we don’t forget in a hurry.

Now trialling a Sunday lunch menu which is truly outstanding. Starters to share are Lobster croquette and Windy Ridge Farm Rump cap, the usual homemade breads with fresh cheese and the amazing Kota heritage tomatoes. All prepared to the usual high standards. Then a choice of roast beef (from Phillip Warren) or roast pork, with all the usual vegetables. To follow are two shared desserts, a massive bread and butter pudding with soda bread ice cream and chocolate mouse with blackberry ice cream and fennel. Packed restaurant despite torrential rain, great atmosphere and attentive and friendly service. Get in while you can, a lot of very high quality and very tasty food at £49.50 per head. Highly recommended

Outstanding food. We visited early evening in August 2020 and chose the six course taster menu with wine pairing. Every dish was fabulous from amuse bouche to blue cheese ice cream (yes that's correct and did it work well!) Every course focusses on balance and flavour combinations, which work brilliantly. We were in the restaurant for over 3.5 hours, not rushed at all. A very pleasant and thoroughly enjoyable evening. If you are in Cornwall, England or actually the UK, go. It's fabulous. Well done Jude. Trying time's (particularly for you) handled very well.

Stunning food and wonderful service. Welcoming and friendly staff and a lovely warm atmosphere. The restaurant is extremely pleasant to linger in with the perfect level of lighting. They were particularly accommodating with my 11 week old baby. I was nervous about bringing her to such a nice restaurant but didn’t want to miss out on the family meal and they were more than helpful and gave us a large table with room for the pushchair. We were having such a nice time that the baby stayed content and happy for the full three hours so I shouldn’t have worried. Will hopefully go back again soon.

What I experienced was a scam! I had dinner in this restaurant with my husband and son, they took the Tasting Menu that I did not want to take because among so many fish courses there was also one of lamb, since I do not like mixing meat and fish, I decided to take a Main Course based on fish. The tasting menu for my husband and son was an excellent experience and had an excellent quality-price ratio. I on the other hand was completely disappointed because the quantity of fish they brought me was the same as that of the same dish contained in the tasting menu, about 40 g of fish... I pointed out to the owner that it was not possible that my Main Course was the same size as one of the dishes of the Tasting Menu of my companions and she replied that the Chef portion the fish based on the courses and that mine was slightly larger... I can testify that at most there was 1 g of fish more! My dish cost 5 times more in proportion to the same dish served in the tasting menu. This is a real scam! At the end of the dinner she offered me two biscuits to apologize, I expected him to give me a reduction in the price because it is not possible to pay for 40g of fish as if it were a whole fish!!

First impressions are all important when eating in a fine dining restaurant and this place is no exception, we were greeted with a smile and shown to our table by the front of house manager Elle. Water bought out promptly to our table with menus we decided to go with the à la carte menu. I love my wine but find choosing from list sometimes tricky but no worries here they have Dan the wine man who’s knowledge was endless he gave us a taste of a red Cabernet Sauvignon from California which we loved and bought a bottle of. Orders taken while waiting we were bought some home made bread this was to die for with home made butter. I had goats cheese and beetroot, which was delicious my husband had the Heritage tomato and crab which was outstanding. Beef for main which melted in my mouth pescatarian Husband had fish with a side fries and greens. With my dessert stomach intact, I followed with The milk and honey dessert. Lovely evening fantastic food the Chef Ross came out to say hello which I always think is a nice touch so we told him how talented he is and his food was fantastic.

If you are visiting porthleven this for us is our number one place to eat. Ellie and the team nail it consistently. The a la carte means you can visit for one or two courses and the taster menu with wine pairings is great if you want to make a longer night of it.

Disappointed to say the least. My partner and I tried the tasting menu with myself opting for the accompanying wines. We were seated for sometime before giving our order then waited 50 minutes for the first course to be served (an oyster which only I was having so my partner was waiting much longer to start eating). A couple that arrived after us, and were eating the same menu, were served twenty minutes before us and once we pointed out our delay the staff seemed to act but still with no haste or apology. As the courses arrived the wine would come out, mostly, after the food had arrived which is backwards to how it should be. As we were there for in excess of three hours the seats became very uncomfortable too. Overall the food was satisfactory but did not reach the standard one would expect from a meal of this style at this price point. The staff were generally courteous but lacked knowledge of the etiquette for this type of service and were short of professionalism for the standard the restaurant are hoping too attain. Based on our experience we agreed that we will not return to Kota.

A postponed Fathers' Day lunch for me from my eldest. Worst experience was finding somewhere to park! Hence only 4 stars for location. However, the friendly and super-efficient service was most welcome. My son had booked a taster menu, which apparently wasn't served on a Saturday lunchtime. However, the lovely lady who looked after us arranged an effective taster menu with various dishes on the menu, all of which were chosen by them with our blessing, disregarding ones we didn't want, and all of which were superb! A beautiful bottle of Cornish bacchus wine too. Really exceptional food and service. We'd eaten at their smaller Kota Kai nearby before, which was equally lovely. Can I recommend them? Absolutely!

Perfect time between courses, which were about 8. Great service, attentive, seemed to know what sort of vibe your group were looking for and leant into that. The restaurant is rather smaller than it appears in the photo. It is situated in a lovely old building but that does mean that tables are close together and we could hear the conversations of two other tables as if the occupants of those tables were sitting as part of our family group. The staff are wonderful, service is excellent. The wine list is excellent. The food is a little disappointing though, given some of the glowing reviews. The snacks which are served before the starters are delicious and they certainly raise expectations but the rest of the meal was disappointing. I opted for the pork for my main course which consisted of slices of belly pork sitting in a fatty broth in a bowl. The dish simply didn't work, it was just a bowl of fat. The other members of my family had ordered fish, which they thought was OK but no more special than the seafood we had eaten in other local restaurants. We ordered a side of leaves and these were covered in a very salty dressing. Salty salad leaves are not something I would personally choose. Two of us were seated on a bench, which you can see in the Trip Advisor pictures. It was uncomfortable. All in all, I do not think Kota is worth the money. If you are visiting West Cornwall and you are looking for a really special evening out, then try the Ugly Butterfly in Carbis Bay. It is more expensive than Kota but worth the money. If you are looking for good quality fresh local produce cooked well, at an affordable price, try the Mousehole Deli and Kitchen restaurant in Mousehole.

I would give more stars if I could. This meal was perfection! We had the 4 course tasting menu with the wine flight and started with some oysters (I have never had oysters served that way, nor tasting so good). The attention to detail is second to none here. The menu had 2 things which I am not keen on (Mackerel and salmon) so I was slightly nervous about how much I would enjoy the whole meal. Both of those courses were amazing and I would have happily eaten more of them - the flavours balanced perfectly with the other ingredients on the plate. The John Dory main was probably one of the nicest dishes I have ever eaten. It is on the pricier side compared to other restaurants but it is worth treating yourself to here at least once on a visit to Porthleven. We will definetly eat here again on our next stay. I now come here every time I visit Porthleven and have never been let down.

Been looking forward to eating here since watching Jude on Great British Menu a few years ago, and glad to say we weren’t disappointed. We started with a unique twist on a dry martini in the bar area then opted for the very reasonably priced wine pairing with the also reasonably priced tasting menu. Most courses were top class, with only the fish course being slightly underwhelming (which might just be personal taste), and all well matched with generous pours of wine including a nice English sparkling. Service was also great with just 2 front of house, and the overall experience was as good as several Michelin starred restaurants, so not sure why this hasn’t got a star yet as it seems deserving.

Visited during the Porthleven Food Festival. Sunday lunch/dinner we thought. Tasting type menu described as tapas but I would say canapés and starters size. We chose 5 portions, crab doughnuts, scallops, haddock scotch egg and monkfish. Crab doughnuts x 2 £12, tasty but the size of a £2 coin. “One hand dived scallops”, was one sliced I think rather than scallops plural at £14 and in a bland butter. The scotch egg was a single quails egg at £8.50 and the Monkfish the size of a tablespoon was £24 in a sauce with no discernible taste. So plus £20 for a medium rosé and small pilsner lager later, £80 the lighter we left to buy some street food on the market to top up our lunch out.

We always love to visit Kota when we are down here and booked for Saturday lunch. We were rather disappointed that there was no set menu on offer, it was Small Plates or nothing. There was no mention on the website that this is all that was offered at lunch time otherwise we probably wouldn’t have bothered. However, we had 3 small plates each which were all absolutely delicious although they came out at varying times so we weren’t always eating together. We followed them with the Baked Cheese which was also very delicious. The service we felt was not up to the usual standard, at one time we were left without a fork and couldn’t get the waitresses attention for love nor money so had to just pinch one from another table. We were sufficiently full when we left but would probably still not choose the Small Plates option. We still managed to spend about £112 for 2 people. A little disappointed that it was not made clear on the website.

An impromptu visit to Kota! As we arrived in Porthleven the heavens opened and we dashed for the nearest cover which happened to be Kota. It was lunchtime so the decision was made to have something to eat while we waited for the rain to subside. What a great find. The choice of food was not mainstream and all the dishes we tried were impeccably presented and had to be some of the best food I've had for sometime. Some may find it a little pretentious with their £35 bottles of wine! I opted for Doom Bar ☺️. We tried six dishes and the total bill with drinks came to £56. It was a great dining experience and when we are back in the area we will definitely call in again.

Very good food but not without faults. This is a fine dining restaurant so my review is adjusted for that. Starter snacks used fine ingredients like lobster but their taste was lost due to spices or other ingredients overshadowing them. I could feel the texture but couldn't taste the lobster. The main dish - sea bass was wonderful. I could taste it was cooked on coal, the brown crab meat sauce that came with it was delicious. However the already small piece of fish came with ONE new potato. I almost laughed and wanted to check the menu again if it said new potatoeS or new potatO. I understand the concept of fine dining, but if I order 4 course menu (effectively snack, starter, main, desert) I expect to get a decent sized meal and ONE potato is taking it one step too far. It's not a prized ingredient - it's just a potato.. The menu lists sides, but if a dish comes with potatoes why would I need to order sides? The food is great and michellin star worthy, but there's just not enough of it. Desert was nice but the rhubarb ice cream was way too sour. I liked the use of merangue as texture.

Went in for a tasting menu (6 course) with one of us having the vegetarian option, and one the meat options. The dishes were well presented and interesting. The beetroot and nettlecurd dish felt a little out of place as it's so sweet compared to the rest, and I can't help feeling it would have made a better dessert than mid-menu dish. We shared one wine pairing, which was a little heavily leaned on whites for my taste and only one red served with a chicken dish which was an odd combination but nicely managed. Overall a really lovely experience, and the service was great especially as we were amongst the last tables left in the restaurant. I will note that the tasting menu is longer than expected, we found ourselves there for nigh on 3 hours.

Went there for a late valentines night. Enjoyed the 6 taster meal it was the best meal ever. We booked a room, and it was smashing. The breakfast in the sister restaurant was just as good. The staff members were brilliant, and their service was excellent.

Nice tasting menu experience, 1st time in Kota Restaurant. It was a great value vs served food, its quality, service and overall ambiance. Personally I did not enjoy their dessert but it is all very personal. Great seafood quality, amazing snacks and fresh GF bread was a nice addition. I think the interior is lacking some “warm cosy” touch but probably it feels different in hot summer time. I e visited early March when it was cold outside.

Great cooked food, most of what we ate was well balanced and very flavoursome. Staff gave great service.. However, the menu seems to be biased to a six course set of plates. With portions that are really nice but small and expensive. I went there expecting more seafood and well just..... more.... To put it into a synical perspective? A Yorkshireman would not like enjoying eating here.

Well worth the money as it is a little on the prices side! The welcome and service were exceptional. We had the four course tasting menu with wine pairing, every course was delicious. We would definitely return and would recommend.

We were excited to try when we read the chef is Kiwi-Malaysian. Tried to book but the table is unavailable throughout our a week stay in Cornwall . But the manager, Laura called me back the next day to accommodate us!It was a fine dining in a cozy atmosphere.. unlike others fine dining we went to before, here feels more relax but still refine. The staffs are very knowledgeable (our hostess, Julia studying engineering in Cornwall but embrace the fine dining experience with passion to share her knowledge of the menu in details)We choose 4 course testing menu with me took additional oysters dishes and extra 2 dishes from the restaurant. The restaurant very accomodating to our dietary requirements. This is truly am amazing experience for us. ❤️

This was incredible we had the tasting menu with the wine pairing, the amuse bouche was fantastic way to start, im not a big fan of tomatoes but the tomatoe consume was incredible and the food only got better as it went on my favourite was the beef and my girlfriends favourite was the scallops, the wine with each course was perfectly paired, the service was great and just the right amount of time between each course for you to finish the wine and really enjoy the foodWe were also staying in the accommodation above the restaurant, was a bit of a hassle to get checked in but was fantastically located right next to the harbour, the view was lovely, and the breakfast was very good, can't wait to go again.

Kota is a fabulous place and should you be lucky enough to find yourself within striking distance of it, just down tools and go. We had the four course tasting menu with wine, sharing the two courses where there were options - main and pudding- so we could taste everything on offer. Nothing was merely good. Everything was superb.Service was friendly without being too chummy and a throw away remark of mine resulted in the menu being subtly adjusted, which was very unexpected and much appreciated. The only jarring note was the table of no-shows next to ours. I was so annoyed that anyone would treat the Kota team with such distain - I hope their KFC, or wherever those morons went, choked them.Anyway, thank you Kota for a truly memorable evening.

I was lucky enough to secure a table for our 39th wedding anniversary and we opted for four courses from the tasting menu. The food and atmosphere were wonderful! The ladies who served us were lovely, friendly and knowledgeable explaining each dish as it arrived which added to the overall experience. Highly recommended for a great dining experience. Book early for special occasions to avoid disappointment as extremely popular.

Having spent many years watching Jude on great British menu and having admired his food from behind the screen, it was a truly special experience getting to try it for real! From the beautiful savoury macaroons, to the delightful starters, immaculate fish mains and the chocolate cremeux to finish, the experience was superb! Would 10/10 recommend!

We had booked in advance having admired Jude Kereamas cooking on great British menu. We were so excited and it did not disappoint. We chose the four course tasting menu reasonably priced at £45, it also ran another two choice three course at £28, amazing value. The food was stunning. My favourite the crab starter, but all courses were small but punchy in flavour. The scallops with pork belly a fine balance, sticky short rib main I wanted to lick the plate, strawberry pud, celebrated the fruit in many forms, yummy. I wish we had booked two nights it would have been worth the taxi fare again. We would highly recommend, and if ever back in Cornwall will revisit. Thank you for a delicious dinner.

We visited Kota in August while on holiday in Cornwall, to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary and had high hopes. It definitely didn’t disappoint! We chose the six course tasting menu with wine pairing and both the food and service were exceptional. We couldn’t decide which course was our favourite as each one seemed to get better! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and we never felt rushed. An amazing experience!!! Sadly we didn’t get to meet Jude who was away at the time (we didn’t expect to anyway but it would have been the icing on the cake if we had!). We have followed him on the Great British Menu and his food is as outstanding as what we imagined! Amazing experience which we will remember - thanks to all xx

Outstanding meal, we chose the taster menu as it featured several of Jude’s dishes from the Great British Menu. The whole menu was delicious, well presented and the staff were extremely hardworking and informative. However the highlights were tomato consommé which out of this world and the Hake dish. Highly recommend a visit, we will be returning

We’ve had the pleasure of many visits to Kota over the last seven years. The food is excellent with outstanding warm and friendly service. Elle has looked after us almost every time we have visited; since our son was a baby. She is fantastic! Jude had continued to deliver a brilliant menu; which has evolved over the years. We loved the new 6 course taster menu; which is the best we have had. Kota is one of the main reasons we book to spend our summer holidays near Porthleven. It remains head and shoulders above its competition. We make sure we make several reservations as soon as we book accommodation. Thank you to Jude, Elle and the team for so many special memories. You deserve all the success you have had. Looking forward to our next visit in a few days.

Our daughter gave us a voucher for Kota at Christmas 2019. This was valid till April 2020. However, 18 months later the restaurant honoured it, which was very much appreciated. What an amazing experience we had the 6 course taster menu, each course was unbelievable. I must also mention the attentive staff who guided us through each course, which added to the making of a memorable evening.

From arriving to leaving the restaurant our time was full of magic. The staff are amazing, cheerful and go beyond the call of duty to ensure you have an enjoyable time. The food is truly magical, every mouthful an absolute joy and an experience not to be missed. The menus change but whatever you choose will be a taste sensation. If you have not been you must try it once at the very least and to give your taste buds a work out. Our thanks to all the staff especially Jude, Liz and Dan

A very quaint looking restaurant in the lovely old harbour town of Porth Leven in Cornwall. We pre-booked and were welcomed by lovely friendly staff. The place feels wonderfully homely and comfortable and is very tastefully decorated. We both opted for the for course tasting menu and wow! It was absolutely delicious. Beautifully prepared fresh ingredients. Fabulously tasty dishes. Fine dining at its very best. It was incredible. The owner Jude was there when we arrived, we knew him from the programme 'The Great British Menu'. And if this is how good his food is, he has a fabulous future ahead of him. We will definitely be returning.

This was a great place to stop for a snack during our exploration of the town. The sausage roll was lovely and the coffee was great too with a wide selection! They’re dog friendly in the outside seating area too - unsure about whether they’re allowed inside.
