“A royal disaster at the Kings Arms! Took the family out for what we hoped would be a hearty meal and instead got… well, a small sample size of a dinner! The much-anticipated muntjac main came out and looked more like an appetizer, served with all the grandeur of a bite-sized snack. When we politely asked the waitress if this was actually the main course, she snapped back with a cheery ‘Well, maybe you should eat before you come next time!’ Ah, the charm. Things only got weirder when the owner marched over, raised an eyebrow at us like we were some sort of Yelp/TripAdvisor/Google Review mafia, and kindly informed us, ‘You’d better not even think about leaving a review.’ Well, here we are, honoring her request… sort of. So, if you’re into dining experiences where you leave hungrier than you arrived and enjoy being mildly threatened, the Kings Arms is your kind of place!”

This is definitely a traditional English country pub, and one of an unfortunately dying breed. It feels like you've been transported back 20 years and not in a bad way. There is no pretention here and the place is full of quirky details - such as the Farmer's Market board where you can buy all manner of game including an entire side of venison - that adds to its charm and authenticity. The menu is just the right length, with plenty of game and non-game options. Their speciality is game and smoked meats and it is really worth trying. It's not often you can find smoked sweetbreads in panko breadcrumb or venison and kidney pudding, especially done so well. The presentation of the food belies the rustic feel of the pub and it tastes as good as it looks. There is a good range of beer on tap and a decent wine list. The quality of the beer is very good with some nice local beers, which all seem to be well cellared and maintained.

Very nice food, one fish and chips and one fisherman's platter. All well cooked and nicely presented. Although the staff were friendly and helpful, the service was extremely slow - for pur 7pm booking we didn't see any food until 7.55pm. The restaurant area we were in was quite nice but the chairs were hard wood and not at all comfortable, and our table was next to the fireplace which resulted in regular wafts of sooty air.

My wife and I have just returned from a two night stay with dinner and breakfast both days. It was our first stay, and we are asking ourselves ,why have we not stayed there before. The room we had was clean and the bed very comfortable. The towels were lovely and soft, and the room was serviced daily. The food far exceeded our expectations. The choice , quality and taste were exceptional. It is not often that you find an establishment that can offer such innovative, beautifully cooked, dishes. Well done Chef. All of this is complemented by the wonderful staff. Their service, friendly welcoming attitude, and attention to detail is second to none. Thank you all. We cannot wait to return.

Myself & my fiancé visited the pub yesterday evening, we brought our 2 small dogs and were welcomed to a lovely table by a fire, tucked out of the way, perfect! The food was fantastic, trout to start, deer shank & pheasant for main, with a well portioned brownie & STP to finish. Very pleased with the whole experience, the game was phenomenal and locally sourced. We are unfortunately not local, but we will definitely be returning when next nearby, highly recommended if you are in the area. Easy access in a lovely quaint village, with a large car park.

What a great find. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff. The food is excellent, offering all local produce. The different meat dishes were all looking very tasty. To start, we had the charcuterie, with various pickles, absolutely delicious. I had the 'pub pie', which was beef and Stilton, my wife had the deer steak. Both were beautifully cooked and presented. The pub offers a number of smoked meats for sale, which they produce themselves. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. I would thoroughly recommend The Kings Arms for excellent food and atmosphere.

As you enter you are greeted by cosy seating and a welcoming open fire by friendly and efficient staff. However, what really makes this pub a standout venue is the quality of the food. Specialising in locally sourced game and with bread made on site everything was delicious. At £22.95 for two (very filling) courses the value for money and atmosphere made this visit the first of what will be many!

We meet our friends for a Sunday lunch several times a year - it’s a good half way point for us all, we’ve tried other local gastro pubs and nowhere is as good at The Kings Arms. Had lunch here yesterday and it’s fabulous. Easy to book, loads of space to park on site, cosy atmosphere, friendly and very efficient staff and a super roast lunch. Perfect.

Absolutely fabulous. Our original accommodation fell through and I booked online 20 minutes before we turned up. The lovely lady was printing out our information and taking us to our room as soon as we got there. Not missing a beat. The room was made up as if they were expecting us and clean as a whistle. Lovely towels and a big comfy bed. We slept well, had a lovely dinner and morning breakfast. Would recommend to anyone.

We’ve just had a lovely overnight stay at this gastro pub. Check in was seamless and self service. We stayed in granary suite which is really roomy and comfortable. We ate dinner in the restaurant and oh my word, the food is outstanding. We both had Jimmys Parma style ham to start which was served with a crostini, poached pear, baron bigood cheese, onion relish and Parma stud ham. For mains we had fallow dear and Hereford duo of beef and we shared the double chocolate mousse for pudding. Prices for the standard of good are good but the prices for the great quality wines even better. Many similar places would hike the wine prices up to match the food but huge respect for them not following suit. Service was wonderful, the whole team are just lovely

We have started to travel to the King’s Arms as an annual pilgrimage to a relaxing, special place with incredible food, hospitality and rooms. We have just returned from this year’s trip very full and chilled. I’m nice again we have been looked after so well. The food is the best we’ve ever had. So much care and attention put into the menu and ingredients. Hospitality is the best as well. We messed up quite a bit this time with bookings but we were looked after and finally managed a superb stay. For us, this overnight stay with the evening meal and breakfast is like being tucked up in your favourite blanket and fed your favourite food! Pure indulgence. We will be back next year .! Before if we can!

The Kings Arms is a gem even in this wonderfully blessed locality with many great pubs to choose from. Less famous than the Olive Branch and others perhaps but equally as good in my view.. The food is a consistent high standard and the pub itself is a lovely welcome wrap around experience, especially in the winter... The menus are great, varied, all home cooked, not microwaved factory options.. Game is usually featured and of special note are the Christmas pre- ordered lunches/dinners.. Try them they are truly great with all courses catered for with impossible amounts of food.. We usually finish it off on Boxing day..

We stayed here for two night in a lovely clean room. It was so peacful and quiet at night. Bliss. We took the dinner, bed and breakfast option. Tis gave us a choice from teh A la Carte menu for a fixed price. It was very good value for money and the choice of food was excellent. The restaurant is well know for serving game foods, so if you do not like game, then the selection might be a bit limited for you. However, if like me, you like game then this menu is to die for. I was so spoilt for choice. Brakfast was yummy and the home smoked bacon was sensational. (So much so, we bought some to take away with us). The staff were very friendly and kind. Always helpful, both in the bar abd restaurant. As guests in the hotel, we were very well looked after and any request was met with a smile and efficiency. We had a lovely stay and loved it. Quick review: Was the hotel room good - Yes. Clean and quiet. Breakfast - excellent. Good choice and filling Dinner - again, excellent - Very good selection of well presented and tasty food. We left the dining room full to the brim. Delicious. Would I come back for food - Yes. Would I come back to stay - Yes. Was it value for money - Yes.

We had heard great things about the King's Arms, so we were looking forward to a special meal. On arrival, we were greeted in a friendly manner and given a sample of the local beer to try. The beer was good. The menu was interesting. Lots of game, which we don't normally see. However, meat is not really my thing, so I chose herrings, followed by halibut. The herring starter was decent, if a little costly. The halibut however was dreadful. I received what appeared to be the thin tail end of a fillet, barely more than an ounce of flesh, which was over done and served with three small potatoes cut in half and a bland sauce. The portion was barely any bigger than the starter and at £32 the main course was grossly over priced. We will not be returning.

This is a great place to stay when visiting Rutland - I’m a repeat visitor and do so, essentially because of the excellent food and the traditional features in both the pub and the rooms. Comfort levels are high in the rooms, which are clean...

Couldn't fault anything it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Highly recommend. Staff were attentive and informative, the menu was amazing and the wine list even better. Will be back again for sure.

This lovely pub with a friendly landlord and staff serves good beer and great food. A lot of the menu options are produced by the pub, eggs, smoked meats etc. Good value for money and well worth a visit.

Haven’t been here for several years and we’re highly delighted with our mains. My wife’s lamb cutlets and sweetbreads were truly excellent - best she’s had for ages she said. My bavette of Launde beef was very tasty and my pal’s hake totally enjoyable. My...

Stayed at the local campsite, had already planned to eat here on the Friday (a decision compounded by the weather!!) Pleasant, friendly welcome and service from staff which continued throughout (even discussing the merits of 'The Emoji Movie' with my 4yo daughter...I didn't get it...)...

For the first time in my life I was so appalled by the service that we walked out. We tried to call several times to book a table for 5 (3 kids and 2 adults) during the day but got no answer. Arrived at 6.15...

Having been regulars at the pub several years ago and knowing the quality of food produced by the chef James, we were looking forward to a great experience when we visited on Saturday night. Sadly our evening was utterly shambolic from start to finish. We...

This pub is reputedly good for food. Well, the food was good, but it was served in the smallest portions I have seen for some time. The very poor service let the pub down. There was no "human" level communication from the waiter who was...

Excellent food and service. Friendly. Dogs allowed in bar and garden. Not a place for a quick meal but the wait is worth it.

We called in for lunch after completing an event at Rutland Water. The menu was limited, but offered some interesting choices. Unfortunately, the food did not fulfil our expectations and porportion sizes were small meaning my partner and son left hungry. Therefore an expensive meal. The service was adequate, but not overly friendly. Sadly, we will not be returning, despite the great location.

The food was fine and of decent quality but nothing special. The service was below par. We weren't permitted to order until 20 minutes after we arrived because of a "big party" (it wasn't) and it was 80 minutes until we got our food from first arrival and one was a cold cheese platter! Ok ish in a Michelin star restaurant but not in Rutland for Sunday lunch. A shame as the location and venue is otherwise charming.
