10 of us turned up at the bar at 8pm on a wet and horrible Saturday night. The lady behind the bar was so welcoming and to provide us all with bar food was no problem. She made us feel welcome and could not have been more helpful. (sadly I forgot to get her name) Food was lovely and all left clean plates. My father then decided to explore the main building. The night porter was so polite and informative. So much so, we are considering booking an apartment here next year.Polite and friendly staff that are a real credit to the place.

We visited on Saturday just after valentines and thought it would be busy but it was very quiet with just a few people at the bar. Clearly it’s a grand hotel which has seen better days but it’s still well looked after, perhaps a little tired but preserves the feel of a Victorian / Edwardian seaside hotel. The food was Okay. Nothing to complain about but also it wasn’t exceptional. The service was very good and we were greeted warmly and left to enjoy our meal in quiet but also not forgotten about our drinks needed freshening. We will go back. It’s a fabulous setting and hopefully next time there’s a few more people to inject some atmosphere.

I stay in Folkestone weekly for business, as a single business women, I feel comfortable eating at Kepples, the staff are great, the restaurant has a good selection and caters for me as a Celiac really well. It does at times resemble faulty towers, but thats part of the charm and makes it for me a great evening after work to unwind and enjoy.,

Went to a Family Wedding.... That was held upstairs, but thought little of the venue ,Keppels.... Dance floor away from the seating area, not very cosy, all too far away from each other....not the place for a wedding reception.... but the Bride and Groom liked it, and I suppose that's all that matters

I just keep loving the Grand in Folkestone, feeling left out if I do not at least pop in for a drink while in Folkestone. This time we sat in Keppels for drinks. Most people came in with dogs which was lovely, dog walkers on the Leas are lucky to have such a beautiful seafront and watering hole. The Grand has wonderful old world charm which is not always so easy to find these days, a treasure of a place. The fact that things are a little worn out only adds to the charm, a refreshing change to the clinical bland characterless kind of places so trendy these days. Yet the place is well enough maintained.

Lovely wine bar and restaurant in The Grand Hotel. Entry is best through the hotels gardens. The Grand is on the Leas at Folkestone A wonderful place to be on a hot and sunny day. Anyhow back to Keppels. A quiet laid back atmosphere where you can have a drink whilst reading the paper or just a coffee. There is a bar menu which I've used previously for a sandwich. My little dog was offered a refreshing bowl of water and made friends with the barman whilst I ate my sandwich with accompaniments. But there are also wonderful lunches in the restaurant area. My little dog was not with me the last time I visited with friends and we had a fantastic roast dinner. There is a good menu including a daily roast. Service was very good, although food can take a little while to arrive, but it's such a relaxing place to be so it doesn't really matter. Give it a go if you're in Folkestone.

We chose Keppels, downstairs in The Grand for the quiet atmosphere. This is an "Old World" hotel, reminiscent of grander times. Although the decor is dated and maybe a bit tired it still has that old world charm. We were a group of 5 out for a chatty lunch and easily conversed in the comfortable, quiet surroundings. The roast of the day, lamb, was superb. Served with all the trimmings, the quantity was just right and the service was efficient and our waiter was really friendly. The other bonus is that if you are after coffee late in the evening in Folkestone, Keppels is open until 23:00. We will certainly be going back regularly.

This bar is in the wonderful old Edwardian building of The Grand a real piece of Folkestone's history. The building itself is a wonderfuly imposing structure on Folkestone's famous Leas, there have been many famous people visit over the course of time. Back to present day, the bar area is somewhat tired to say the least, it could really do with a serious makeover, the furniture has seen better days as well as the bar itself. It is good to see the reappearance of some bar stools, lovely to be able to sit at the bar for a chat. Taking away the shabby appearance it is a nice bar to drink in, it does have a good atmoshere most of the time with some very interesting local people, you can always guarantee a chat with someone, you won't be lonely in this place. The bar staff provide a very good service & are always pleasant, unfortunatelly various drinks have not been available on more than one occasion that I have visited but this is a managment issue that really needs taking on board, not acceptable for an establishment of this caliber. There is a great seating area outside the grounds are lovely but again the bench tables have seen much better days, I was not amussed on my last visit as I caught my new dress on one off the seats outside, certainly not good for a place that holds weddings. The furniture in a place like this should be well maintained at all times, a bit of maintenance goes a long way. The ladies toilet is totaly below satisfactory, the smell of urine in there is not acceptable in a place like this, the toilet cubicles are very sub standard, you can even see through the sides of the doors when someone is in them. The hand drying facilities need looking at, why are large rolls of hand drying towels doing sitting on the side in puddles of water & as for the waste paper bins, well, most times I have visited they have been overflowing with paper towels spilling on to the floor, really discusting. All these issues need addressing urgently, I have been in better & cleaner toilets in much lower standard pubs, this really lets this place down. I do enjoy drinking in Kepples because of the great characters in this place who are always friendly & make you laugh but I'm sure many people must have been put off by the toilets and shabbyness of the place, it should be top notch here but it isn't. Come on managment bring this place up to the standard it should be this place should be the best kept & with the best interior decor in Folkestone but it isn't !! However it could be, just think how stunning it could look & how much more business it would bring if standards were raised, this beautiful old building deserves it.

Visited this restaurant for the first time this week. Gorgeous restaurant in a magnificent Edwardian (I think) building. Wonderful grounds. The restaurant was clean and the toilets (something I usually check) were first class. The Waiter was attentive and helpful and the food was divine. My friends and I all agreed our meals were the best we had eaten in a long time. There was a bit of a wait for the food to be served but it is obviously cooked to order so no complaints about that. Not a place for a quick bite - but definitely the place for casual relaxed dining. A very enjoyable meal and I will definitely be visiting again soon. We all had desserts and they were also delicious. The Lemon Tart was my choice and I loved every mouthful. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are around the Leas in Folkestone and want an enjoyable unhurried meal.

We were invited to lunch by a friend living in Folkestone before taking the Euro Tunnel. It was mid-week and a nice sunny day. Our friend said she was a regular at the Keppels and that we would enjoy the good food and quiet atmosphere with a very nice view of the Channel. Our friend was indeed correct. Though it is labelled as a bistro it is decorated like a traditional restaurant in an historic building. The range of food is similar to a pub but it's more formal venue, less noisy and it piano music in the background! The food was very good and it was excellent value for money given the place. There was decent choice for vegetarians and the service was as expected in such a hotel.

The Grand has a fascinating story, documented on an information board on the Leas. As you walk up the main steps you enter a light airy dining room glassed from floor to ceiling with great views over the ocean. Unfortunately this is the Gramd looking Palm Court Restaurant with a different menu and our reservation was with Keppels which meant going down stairs to a bar type area at ground level with a dining room to the side with a more downmarket look and feel. It overlooks the large private garden, and indeed you can walk from Keppels separate ground floor entrance across the green to the Burlington Hotel where we were staying. We had wanted the roast of the day, which was lamb, and it came with a Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes and good selection of vegetables. Pleasant comfort food; shame we couldn’t have had it in the splendid surrounds of upstairs. We’d enjoyed Carignan the previous night at Bay Tree Grill so ordered the Baron De Baussac Carignan, which was the same wine, with a different label and pricier, and just as delicious.I must mention the nasty cheap wine glasses, thick and rimmed, that neither belonged in a Grand Hotel or with these mark-ups on wine

We stopped at Folkestone for an hour or two during our British Belmond Pullman trip. A coach took us the short ride to Folkestone Promenade from the station. After a walk we sat in the gardens of the Grand Hotel with a G&T and a cold beer from Keppels as overfed but still hungry gulls loitered slyly overhead, waiting to swoop on tables of discarded food. It was a bright, sunny day and the views across the Channel were relaxing.

The first thing that struck me was that the restaurant didn't seem very bistro-like, so wondering whether we were in the right place (though the reservation was for Keppels looking back I am wondering whether we were actually in the Palm Court). The second thing was that it was a very nice atmosphere - rather calm and elegant - our table by a window had a lovely view of the lawn/gardens. The third was that that it was almost empty. I thought this very strange for 1 pm on a Sunday. I had roast lamb. It was ok but somehow it wasn't as good as some of the Sunday roasts I have had in pubs. I seem to remember the veg let it down, especially the potatoes, which weren't very crispy - which is a must for me. The service was very good and the price reasonable - I think about 10 pounds for the roast. We had tea afterwards in the conservatory part of the Salon de The, which was pleasant. I would go again and try something different to see if the mediocre food was just a one off, because the actual setting is lovely - though do wonder if the lack of customers means that the food in general isn't that great.

This review is based on the bar area only.On popping into the bar of this hotel for a bit of lunch, I was quickly surprised by the lack of staff anywhere to be seen, despite a number of customers in the bar area. After around a 10 minute wait, a rather harried looking waitress/bartender arrived, doled out some cups of coffee to some other customers then apologised to me before disappearing again for another 5 minutes. I must make it clear that this appeared to be no fault of her own, just a general lack of staffing.Eventually I ordered some food for my partner and I, with her having the coronation chicken baguette and I, what sounded like a delicious sausage, mustard and caramelised red onion panini. On the arrival of the food, I was initially pleased to see a nice side salad and some chips accompanied it. On starting to eat however I noticed something amiss! The side salad was drenched in what I believe to be a balsamic vinegar dressing, to the point that a piece of red pepper was recreating the Di Caprio/Winslet farewell/drowning scene from titanic with a piece of onion, almost enough to bring a tear to my eye.The chips were edible, if lacking in available condiments, but nothing special.I then moved on to the main event, the alleged sausage, mustard and caramelised red onion panini. I say alleged because on taking my first bite, I realised that something appeared to be missing, specifically the sausage. On inspection I found inside the panini enough caramelised red onion to feed a small army, and what appeared to be the single smallest sausage i have ever seen, sliced so wafer thin that i was afraid that it would give me a paper cut should i dare pick it up. This was a massive disappointment to me as I had ordered a dish with sausage as one of the main listed ingredients yet I have seen vegetarian options with more meat in them.I would have complained to the waitress but she had disappeared again, so I ate my caramelised red onion and mustard panini in despairing silence and left, having paid £7.50 for the pleasure. The other half reported her coronation chicken baguette as "Alright".

Visited The Grand for afternoon tea yesterday. I booked in order to treat my mother-in law and as they cater for gluten free. I cant complain regarding the scones and gluten free bread that was used for sandwiches was delicious, however the filling of the sandwiches not the best, tuna mayo and cheese is not what I was expecting for a high tea. The chefs pastry special, really wasn't special more like a mass of sickly sweet cream of some sort with a dollop of chocolate sauce, I know gluten free cakes and puddings are hard to make taste nice however I can do better than what was served!!. The tea well I am not sure what was floating in it but was not very appetising. Feedback would have been left at the time but only saw the waiter when he brought out the food then disappeared. The rain was pouring through the roof in the corner like a water fall and the ceiling is in desperate need of a repair, also cleaners have never looked behind the radiators as a new eco system was growing behind them. It was a shame this experience was not only a let down but I was also embarrassed as this was supposed to been a treat to say thank you to my mother in-law.

We are regular customers here and always enjoy the company and conversation we get here. I have to say I am a tad confused as to why there should be no bar stools ? I have been in bars all round the world some very expensive and have never been to one that you can't rest your feet by sitting at the bar, very strange. The locals we have met here are a great bunch always friendly and allowing you to join in their conversations. Although there have been times when we haven't been able to have the beverage of our choice as it has sold out !! I do find this sort of bad management unacceptable in a place like this. The bar staff are great always wanting to please, they work very hard but always remain cheerful. I wouldn't reccomend the food in the Kepples bar, it also has a lovely outdoor seating area.which I have tried a few times as it has never lived up to expectations. A very nice venue but the food is not of a very high standard. It is not expensive so you can say that you get what you pay for but just the same it could be better. I had the burger which was very dry, no onions and the faintest smear of mayonnaise which was billed as chilli mayo but there was no evidence of that. The bun was untoasted and of poor quality. The chips were very average and from the freezer. The salad had no dressing. I was offered tomato ketchup but asked instead for some more mayo which was provided. Only one member of staff seemed to be on duty and managing both the bar and service. He did the best he could and so I would not blame him for the slowness or the initial impression that we were going to sit there for ever without acknowledgement or menus. He was civil but preoccupied and so we did not really feel welcome. Saying that I love the Grand but they really need to improve on their food. Just little things would make all the difference.

It was filled with all that mixed up stuff that you can get in Tesco's. It would have been nicer if it was a whole bacon strip and a bit of chicken. I found it a bit strange for it to be all mixed up like baby food and due to the low table, bits of it escaped periodically onto the floor. Sadly the crisps got a bit damp in the salad dressing so they could have been better served in a separate bowl as who likes damp crisps?

Had gone for a walk on the Leas on a lovely evening and decided to look at the menu outside The Grand. Mum liked what she saw and after a good walk we climbed the steps and went inside. We were asked if we wanted to go downstairs to Keppels or to sit in the dining area overlooking prom. We had the window seat and ordered our food. The portions were generous the steak excellent and cooked as we asked. Can't fault the service which was polite and friendly.

We went here for a Sunday evening meal. The bar had a lovely atmosphere, and we were looking forward to our meal. However, there was one person covering the bar and restaurant. They managed this very well. However, the food was not very nice. My child left his burger, as he said it was horrible. I had the veggie burger, not sure what it was, no taste and very chewy. My husband had steak pie, not too impressed. My other son had the gammon, which seemed to be the best. It was a lovely setting, but felt that that is what we paid for. We didn't even stay for pudding or coffee.

...but oh so handy on cold rainy winter days & nights, & hot summer days.. Easy parking most days, for fairly regular pub grade nosh, that passes muster & is a far better & more civilised place to eat than many of the other pubs in this town, & for roughly similar money. The Grand burger towers tall but is not grand at all, needs a kick & crunch & more flavour & a better bun.The Gammon egg & chips was good, with a huge slice of ham. Very filling.Steak nights are good value too, all done at special prices.Great location, can get busy, & decent but expensive beers, but that is now the same everywhere as the Govt. takes £3 tax out of every pint. Tax the workers or what!!Recommended for civility & al fresco drinking & dining if weather is fair, & all can be worked off with a good jaunt down to the beach below.

Love the fire, and the different feel depending where you sit. We had the leather sofa which was cozy. The food was not bad at all had a Brie and bacon panini, with a stab at a side salad, no dressing tut tut. The food was quick and the prices reasonable. Can see how service might be slow, as the bar was only one manned. But guess we were lucky. Thumbs up its got a good feel and what a setting

I personally loved it here, I wasn't aware what a lovely place it is. I was looking for a decent place for myself, son and grandaughter to go and we were not dissapointed. The meals were really nice, I admit the service was very slow but there was only one person serving and running the bar at the same time, he was lovely though and did the best he could. I liked it that much we are going for Mothers Day lunch.

In winter, Keppels has a huge fire with comfy sofas all around it. Sometimes they have a pianist playing easy listening music. In summer there are outside tables and benches set in large enclosed gardens, and its absolutely ideal for children. They can run around safely under their parents watchful eye while waiting for their food. When the food comes, it doesn't matter if the children drop food or spill drinks because its on grass. This means much less stress for parents. The food is of a high standard and competitively priced.

I only had a snack as we were dining in the Burlington hotel that evening, I had a prawn sandwich nothing out of the ordinary but was fresh this is near the Grand Hotel maybe that is why I expected it to be "grander" my husband had potato wedges, which came with cheese over them, they were okay as well but not what we thought, think he expected a dip of some sort but not bad

Keppels has a fully stocked bar with two quiet dining areas, one formal and one informal. You can eat main course food such as fish and chips or just have a snack. I usually have an egg and avocado sandwich on brown. It's gorgeous and comes with fresh salad and crisps on the size. An absolute bargain! If you eat in the informal dining area you must place your order at the bar.

Wonderful position on the Leas with great views. The hotel often holds art and other exhibitions on the premises giving the opportunity to use the restaurants for lunch. Although they are open to non residents all year round. An informal dining area with tented ceiling has a selection of tables overlooking the sea. Very good snacks plus soup of the day, fish and chips and other hot food all freshly prepared. Friendly staff and efficient service. Their sandwiches are excellent and come with a salad garnish and gourmet crisps, good choice of drinks both hot and cold from the bar. All reasonably priced, in good weather you can sit in the gardens.

We visited Keppels Bar at The Grand on Sunday evening for a light snack. As a diabetic, I asked for no chips with my burger, but a vegetable instead. The barman said that he would see what he could do, but did not seem confident that the chef would allow this. When the meal arrived, the barman was clearly so embarrassed by the chef’s refusal to comply with my request that he forgot to apologise – as well as having missed the fact that the meals were the wrong way round; my wife’s meal had no chips, but mine did.The inability of the Grand to accommodate this simple request for some flexibility in the meal was frankly staggering. Clearly, you eat your meal the way the kitchen tells you, or not at all. Not apologising is, perhaps, supposed to make you doubt that you had made the request in the first place.

I've been to the grand a few times now since moving to the area of Kent, from working in the hospitality industry myself I have found the keppel's bar at the grand different to other bars in the area. They have a Dr syn painting in keppel's painted by terry Anthony, which I believe is worth a look. One of the staff called Shane has been very helpful and other staff in filling me in on details about Dr syn and the event they have coming up soon. Also the food here I've found no fault in to this day, the carvery roast is fantastic I always try to come when I have a Sunday off. I've been at keppels a few times on a busy night and always enjoy myself, so I would like to say well done to the management at the grand.

We used to eat here fairly regularly but had not been for quite some time as the last time we walked out because the service was so slow. Well nothing has improved and just as well as we were glad we had not ordered or managed to buy drinks from the bar. We visited last night and had hoped to have a fish and chip supper. We first went and sat in the main bar and had to move to the restaurant because of the noise from the group of drunks propping up the bar. We moved into the restaurant and sat for a considerable time without anybody giving us a menu. The noise from these drunks got worse and when they began swearing we decided we would leave and go elsewhere. We did complain to the manager before leaving who did suggest we could eat our bar meal in the Palm Court restaurant. We declined and suggested he should ask the drunks to leave as any respectable bar would not put up with and continue to serve drunks causing such a disturbance. Never again!

Same old same old....... such an amazing venue just a pity about the mediocrity. The upstairs view really is phenomenal and the Grand is a reminder of glorious days gone by. The current cuisine however, could do with a kick in the jaxsy.

The food was good , I was not able to have my first choice of drinks because they had "run out ".The most off putting thing was the unbelievable noise coming from the bar music system , I was informed that it was the general managers instruction that the music was playing - MUSIC IT WASN'T ! If there is going to background music , which in an eating enviroment I prefer , at least have proper music .The service whilst being good was handicapped by by only having one member of staff to serve drinks , wait on table , make tea in coffee etc. For a long period there was no one behind the bar leaving customers waiting a long time to be served .

24 of us plus 5 children went to Keppels for lunch for my 40th birthday. The food and service were amazing, I must especially thank Amy R for her wonderful service, nothing was too much trouble for her, she was so organised it all went smoothly with no worries to myself. What a stunning place for any occasion, there was also a wedding going on while we were there and the guests seemed just as complimentary and happy as my party were, yet none of the staff seemed to be under any stress!Thankyou to all involved with this booking and please pass my grattitude to the lovely Amy. We will definitely return in the future, to sample your lovely food and service again!

popular with the grey army as the food comes to the table ready plated-- saves stumbling about if you take the Palm Court restaurant upstairs in the same building .

We had lunch at Keppels after finding 'The Grand' on the internet. The Wine Bar was old fashioned, but that was nice. We ordered the 'Grand Burger', which was a home made burger with a fried egg and bacon topping and a salad and chips.. The price was £8.00. Fantastic. The lunch was great and we will be coming again to try the Palm Court Restaurant. I must also say that the service was good and the Waitress great. Well Done.

Excellent food, friendly staff, and a pleasant ambience. A good place to visit. We live in Elham and eat here regularly. Parking is limited so park up on the High Street outside the school.

We called in for drinks or a wet afternoon. As we had a dog with us, we could only sit outside but this might have been the better deal because the interior was very busy indeed. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and braved the rain to serve us our drinks. Our drinks were freshly made and, as they tasted good, they were very welcome. We did have a look at the menu, on which there was a good choice, and the food we saw being served looked well-presented and smelt delicious. I have no doubt that we will be back to try the food.
