This is a superb local pub with good ale from Harvey’s plus a much-improved menu but above all other factors, the new Garden Room provides really comfortable and spacious seating with views across the countryside. I have been coming to the Kentish Rifleman for many years so it is wonderful to witness the renaissance in the capable hands of its young owners. I came here recently for lunch and ordered the battered fish with new potatoes (I find chips too much) and garden peas. The cod was moist and fresh, the batter was thin and crispy, the potatoes cooked freshly for me and the tartare sauce was plentiful. The cost at £15.50 was very good value. Service was efficient and friendly though our waitress had disappeared without providing me with a bill. A knock on the kitchen door brought immediate attention. The only disappointment is that the kitchen staff have voted against serving my favourite Mushy Peas - well as a Yorkshireman exiled in the south, I had to ask !! Highly recommended.

My friends and I visited The Kentish Rifleman for lunch, as we try different establishments each time we meet up. This one was picked at random as it was central to each of us. On arrival, we were welcomed by the host and shown to our table (pre-booked for the garden room). The menu selection was not too extensive but all looked nice and sensibly priced. The meals were chosen and arrived about twenty minutes later. All were very good quality and of sufficient proportion. The service was very good and would recommend a visit. You can really only get to this place by walking a fair distance or by car. A note for drivers, parking is very limited and the the pub is at a junction of small lanes. The pub gets busy, even at lunchtime but worth it!

Nice welcome on arrival & shown to a table in the Conservatory, which was a nice addition since a previous visit. Service was excellent , almost immediate. 3 of our party ordered Rifleman Steak, which when it came was rather different to previously having had this dish in that it was on the rare side , not medium rare as they were told. Although no-one was asked as is usual, how they wanted their steak cooked. Unfortunately 2 of our party found the steak inedible as they found it too rare & tough, their meals were replaced without question. Another guest chose chilli Beef Salad which was plentiful & delicious. We finished our meals with various desserts which were tasty, a mixed experience this time but will probably try again another time.

My wife and I booked for dinner on a Saturday night in the main restaurant . The staff were really friendly and welcoming and the pub unsurprisingly has a great traditional atmosphere given low ceilings , old world beams etc . We are both pescatarians and were disappointed that one of the three main fish dishes was sold out by 7.30 pm. My wife asked for fish cakes as a main course but were served this as a starter which was limiting . I opted for fish and chips which was excellent . We both felt that the vegetarian choices were unimaginative . However the desserts were excellent . Food overall was good .

This lovely old pub continues to improve under the leadership and investment being provided by Vicky (daughter of late owner John) and husband. The food has stepped up to a new level and a wonderful new addition of the Garden Room offers lovely views over the Kent countryside. It has been furnished with lovely wooden furniture, wood slat walls in air force blue, huge sliding glass doors all round and even noise diffusers on the ceiling. We all enjoyed their Tuesday "Pie and Pint" evening which involved a choice of homemade pie, mound of good chips and a pile of market veg with a tasty pint of Tonbridge ale for £12.50pp. Super value in a great pub.

Years ago this was a good, local village pub with good food but after taking over from her late Father, the new owner and husband have invested time. money and care so that it has become a very good local pub with very good food. I much enjoyed the well kept pint of Harvey's beer as we surveyed the interesting menu. My choice was the citrus home-cured salmon with whipped honey and black pepper cream cheese (£8.00) . Others liked the Duck liver pate and the generous portion of Classic prawn cocktail but in some ways the real star was the warm home-made Focacia with olive oil and balsamic dip. This was as good as any tried at an Italian restaurant. The Rifleman steak (butter roasted flat iron) for £18.00 apparently has its devotees but I opted for the Grilled pork chop with black pudding mash (just tasty flecks so not overwhelming) and greens (£17.50) which was magnificent. So good to have pork with tender moist flesh as so many restaurants overcook until dry and tough. Confit duck leg (£17.50) also enjoyed as were the KR burgers. Service was welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable. We hear the kitchen is taking on a 4th chef as it is proving such a great destination and a garden extension suitable for events and dining room overflow opens later this month (April 2024) It is really wonderful to see this 15th century pub, buzzing with the sound of happy drinkers and diners. Well done Vicky and Simon and team

Amazing lunch, Saturday lunchtime and pub really busy with people enjoying a drink and eating. Lovely ambience, log fire. I'd made an error with the booking and reserved for two instead of four. They tried really hard to accommodate us, but understandably, all other tables were booked, so it just wasn't possible. Not their fault. It was entirely mine - but the fact they tried meant a lot. The other two guests were absolutely fine and had a busy schedule anyway, so we will reconvene next week. We were lucky to stay, and all of the food was first class, homemade fare. Couldn't fault a thing. the service was amazing, and we had a lovely time. Thank you.

Again, we had another great Christmas Gathering of friends in the festive decorated, middle restaurant with log fire. Our table was tastefully laid with candle displays and good crackers. As always, the food was delicious, beautifully presented ensuring complimentary remarks and no mutterings of complaint. We were given plenty of time to play our Santa Exchange Gift game before dessert. The Kentish Rifleman is certainly a place to consider for a large party (or small). We had a fabulous time, nothing was too much, we were not rushed, we were not left waiting. The team ensured we all had a great time to kick off the Christmas fortnight ahead. Thank you.

It's a great shame.... The food was quite good. The beer was excellent. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was reasonable. So why go and spoil it all by bunging on a "discretionary" 10% service charge WITHOUT asking BEFORE you are presented with a bill? You know very well it would be embarrassing to tell a waitress/ waiter that you didn't think the service was worth the extra 10%..... What if he/she thought it was only worth 5%? Yes, I've heard all that rubbish about paying the waiters the going rate (probably minimum wage)..... if you want them to earn more.... FACTOR it into your prices. It's not rocket science! Sadly, this morally dishonest practice is becoming quite common amongst our so-called hospitality sector..... So, will actively not recommend your little village pub to anyone, and will certainly not be visiting again..... Tip: Order and pay for your drinks at the bar. They will be 10% cheaper.

I had not visited since before the pandemic so it was wonderful to find the improvements made by the late owners daughter and husband. Whilst keeping great real ale from Harvey's, the main change has been to the quality and imagination of the food offer provided by all new staff in the kitchen. We arrived as a family party of 10 with 5 dogs after a long walk and we had been sensibly asked to pre-order our lunch. This varied from traditional Ham, double egg & chips £12.50 or fish and chips £15.00 with moist fresh cod, to the Rifleman steak £17.00 a generous serving of flat iron cut cooked medium rare and sliced to starters of Onion Bhaji at £6.50 with red lentil dahl, coconut and mint yoghurt and Cheddar & Chorizo croquette with confit garlic mayo at £7.00. These were all generous portions, well presented and cooked with the starters particularly innovative. Very well done, We will soon return!!

We arrived and ordered drinks, shandy. We were asked ,did we want to sit down? I thought it was just for the drink so sat at the nearest table. Drinks arrived. Very nice and refreshing. Lots of cyclists popping in and out for drinks. We ordered the food.Totally naive, I was expecting to be shown to the restaurant. The food arrived. By now, I realised that we were sat at a table in a dark corner and we were not moving. The starters arrived. It was Italian meats with a salad. Meats were very tasty but the salad was ready dressed with mustard and honey dressing. I hate that.I ate the meat, not the salad. Mains arrived, Chicken and Fajita, again with ready dressed salad with chips, both chunky and macdonalds size. There was no space on the plate to make up the fajitas. I was not prepared to struggle but ate all the components separately. I had only eaten fajitas once before and was looking forward to it. Very disappointed. The sauce was gritty and exceptionally hot. It was like eating a packet of shop bought fajita mix that hadnt been mixed properly. I left the chicken and again, ate as much as I could but passed on the salad. Pudding arrived. What could go wrong? I had ordered a lemon cheesecake. It arrived as a plain cheesecake. No lemon flavour at all.Partway through the meal, my husband ordered another shandy. I had left the table as he ordered, when I got back, I noticed his drink was lighter than mine. I asked the lady in front of the bar, which beer was used. She just said that the one he wanted had finished so she gave him another. Love this, done without saying or asking. We paid and left. Will not be going back. The attitude was totally wrong and the food needed dealing with. Totally disappointed.

First post lockdown lunch! And it was great. Lovely location, prompt and good service (tested to the limit by my tea-drinking friend who squeezes more water and milk out of any establishment if she can). Food delicious! Highly recommend the puddings. They’ve really done the social distancing well. Beer drinkers (regulars) in the front part, diners in the pretty garden.

We called in without a reservation for lunch on a Tuesday and were fortunate to get the last available table. We opted for a steak and ale pie and an oven cooked cod for our main courses. The portions were generous and beautifully coòked served with a melange of vegetables. We couldnt resist desserts....one crumble and one pear poached in red wine, again, nicely presented and cooked. If I was being picky I woukd say that the pear woukd have been even better if the core had been removed before cooking but that was a minor point as the flavour and consistency were first class. I watched as other diners were served and all the food looked good! Empty plates were collected, always a good sign! It is obviously a watering hole for regulars as the bar was full with drinkers. We had a warm welcome from our waitress and will definitely visit again. It's worth a visit just to see this wonderful old building but may be wise to reserve a table as it's obviously a popular place for eating.

So much better than its' brief sojourn as a gastro pub, the Rifleman combines everything you would hope for in a traditional pub - tip top food, well-prepared and at reasonable prices, allied to great service. The pub has an excellent atmosphere too! Highly recommended!

Fun evening that we shared with friends and our families... great pies for meat eaters and vegetarians.. Some confusion over the pint - we paid for that separately - so should have checked on that before we ate.

We had a great time at the Rifleman and the food was stunning - The menu is limited but i think the difference is in the quality of the food. Its fabulous and very well cooked. The surroundings are very jack-a-bean and low ceiling but very cozy Staff are polite and helpful too Thank you again

Stopped here after a walk from Shipbourne. This is a quaint old inn set in a quiet location. The bar area is small but there is a reasonable size restaurant. Menu was typical pub food with a mix of sandwiches, light and main meals. We had the salmon ciabatta and the burger infused with Stilton and bacon - very tasty. This was gluten free without the bun. Portions were a good size and reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and the pub was very busy so obviously popular with locals. Well worth a visit if in the area

On the finest Bank Holiday Monday of recent times we enjoyed a marvellous circular walk from Dunks Green via Plaxtol, Ightam and Shipbourne-2 and a bit hours/7.5 miles. The pub was pretty busy by the time we returned but the friendly owners had reserved us a table in the garden. We enjoyed an excellent light lunch of chicken fajitas (2), tempura prawn and smoked salmon and prawn salad, washed down with a much needed couple of beers/cider and lager between the four of us.The pub was very busy but service was attentive and prompt. Great day out. And you couldn't find a more quintessentially English country pub-beautiful old building.

Called in to this great pub for a lunch break during a walk around Plaxtol. What a surprise! An amazing menu with lots of vegetarian gluten free options for me. The pear in red wine is a delicious dessert!

We ate here a couple of weeks ago and very pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and portions, the ham was particularly delicious on that occasion and plentiful. Sadly that was not replicated today, ham was grisly and mean in amount. One waitress seemed to be doing everything in busy pub, doing a good job but it meant everything felt rushed and no time for niceties. Hadn't previously noted automatic 10% service charge unusual in pub like this and something that grates, sadly won't rush back unless walking in this area and maybe just a drink

A group of 15 of us booked in for 8:30pm on a Thursday evening, which is after the kitchen normally shuts. However, Jade, the manageress, was very agreeable to cater for us at that time, and the staff looked after us very well. Jade’s tasty food was scoffed by the hungry diners, and all seemed pleased with their evening. The Vegetable Curry was a great hit.

The Sunday roast has always been fabulous at the Nevill Bull and today was no exception. It’s as good as home cooked one and we are all very fussy about our roasts. Perfect potatoes, perfect veggies just the right texture and taste, brilliant yorkies, beautiful rare beef, their world famous gravy! What’s more to ask for! Wine was also delish and puddings really delightful. Such a soft and gooey brownie, husband had the most delicious waffle and friend had fresh and exquisite ice cream. Thank you for a fabulous afternoon!
