I ordered a takeaway from Kayal and despite most of the food being tasty it deserves 1 star. I ordered a prawns starter and ended up with 4 battered prawn tails with no prawn meat. If a restaurant is being dishonest with such things, what else are they being dishonest with?

Fabulous food and very friendly people. Note that it's not your usual "indian" style of cooking (which is mostly Bangladeshi anyway) but REAL southern Indian food so most of the menu might seem strange to you. Don't be afraid to ask, they are very good at guiding you through it. Well worth a visit, their spice blends are exceptional. Utterly delicious.

We tried Kayal while following a vegetarian diet previously and didn't enjoy the food. Curious about their non-vegetarian options, we revisited today. The mixed seafood platter fell short, with cold fish. Appam and kallushap meen curry were decent, but we've had better as seafood enthusiasts. The thalaserry chicken biryani stood out as delicious, but overall, the experience wasn't mind-blowing – just okay.

We love it here. Great vegetarian options. (And lots of vegan although we aren’t yet) reccommend the paper masala dosa which is the big Lentil and rice wrap that comes with dips and potatoes. And the mutter peer is banging. Not too pricey. And lovely staff.

Oh my goodness, I just have to tell you about our latest food adventure! We visited Kayal, and let me tell you, it was a dive straight into the heart of Kerala cuisine. The place itself has such a cozy and welcoming vibe. It’s like stepping into a little piece of Kerala right here in the city. And the staff? Super friendly and attentive! Now, let’s talk about the food because that’s the real star of the show. We started with Kappa (Tapioca), and it was just the right mix of soft and flavorful. It kind of set the stage for what was to come. The Beef Ularth, oh my! It was this beautiful blend of spices and tender beef – every bite was a flavor explosion. Then came the Masala Dosa, crispy on the outside with a perfectly spiced filling. Absolutely delicious! We also tried Idiyappam, which was this delicate, stringy delight, perfect for balancing the spice in the other dishes. The Fish Mulakitath was another hit – tangy, spicy, and the fish was cooked just right. But the Chicken Stew in Coconut Milk – that was something else! It was so creamy and comforting, like a warm hug in a bowl. We also had Kallapam and Fish Pollichath, each unique and bursting with flavor. Now, the Thalassery Chicken Biryani was the showstopper. It was aromatic, the rice and chicken cooked to perfection, and just packed with flavors. And for dessert, Unnakaya and Kulfi. The Unnakaya was this sweet, banana-filled treat – a perfect end to the meal. The Kulfi was the icing on the cake – creamy, cold, and just the right amount of sweet. Honestly, Kayal is more than just a restaurant. It’s like a little journey to Kerala with every visit. The food, the ambiance, the people – everything comes together to create this wonderful experience. Can’t wait to go back!

Great place if you want to be letting rip all night long. Definitely not an ‘English curry’. Along with stale pupadums I think I won’t be returning. I will in future be sticking to Hawelli which is excellent and right across the street. Would I be surprised to see less than adequate food prep here? Buckets of swill and general filth in the kitchen. Almost certainly. The guy at the bar needs to relax as well. From the way he looked at me one would have thought I was a planning on robbing the place not receiving a takeaway.

Last weekend had lunch with my family at Kayal in West Byfleet. Not the first time that we visit the restaurant, and given good past experiences we keen returning. This time experience was good too. Attentive and friendly staff, good food, nice size of portions, good knowledge of the menu by the staff. Overall a very good experience. One thing that surprised us was that for being a Sunday at lunch time, the restaurant was almost empty. Maybe that helped to have the staff really dedicated to us and the kitchen to deliver food very fast. All in all, good experience and a place where we will definitely eat again

We are regulars at Kayal and can absolutely vouch for the food! We had the fish sadhya today and it was really delicious, and beautifully presented on a banana leaf, the traditional way! Vio is really friendly and great at recommending new things to try. Overall, I think it’s a must visit, and definitely say hello to Vio!

If you like fish curry this place is amazing, they do other types too but seafood is their strength. The only weakness is the service can be a little slow or difficult to interact with, frustrating when you want another drink and weren't offered one when the main courses were delivered.

FOOD POISON, ordered Onam Sadya two weeks before, the quantity was less compared to a meals, taste was not bad but all impression lost as we all got food poison and for somebody it was worse as lasted for a couple of days. Regarding the Onam sadya, banana leaf was missing, many side dishes was not enough for everybody. Some were reheated not fresh made. The restaurant when called to report the issue took it very casually and don’t posses any responsibility, they were eager to refund but not hearing the concerns. Its food you are serving not a product to return or refund. Do consider that.

Lovely authentic Kerala food and service with smile. They were very happy to cater to our food allergies. The appams were super soft and all curries really yumm. The food came pretty quickly as well!

Onam Sadya meal. Food exceeded our expectations. Staff was very attentive and cheerful (which does make a difference). Overall, they were able to recreate a nostalgic Kerala vibe on a dreary cold English afternoon.

My friends and I ordered Onam Sadya from Kayal on Monday, August 28th. All of us experienced stomach issues, severe headaches, and vomiting. One of us got it very severely, so we called the restaurant to inform them about this. However, the manager couldn't control his laughter. I don't understand why this was so amusing to him. I clearly don't think that this is how they should respond to their customers.

We ordered Onam Sadya for 4 person yesterday,We got diarrhoea and My one year old baby is sick now.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the Onam Sadhya takeaway on Monday from Kayal restaurant, West Byfleet. There was a variety of delicious curries and traditional Kerala dishes such as Avial , Inji Puli , Sambar and many more .The food is high quality and I felt like I was in Kerala . Definitely will be going back to this wonderful place !!!

The food was great - not your average Indian takeaway food; this is very authentic, and very tasty! We had the vegetable platter dinner, which was a great way to try all sorts of different flavours. Only negatives were that we could have had better service, we were left hanging a few times, and there could have been some info on the menu as to what was served in the platter. However - we had a lovely, delicious dinner and would definitely recommend Kayal for a different Indian food experience!

We enjoyed our visit. The service was good, the atmosphere was great and the food was superb. I enjoyed a Dosa (curry in a pancake) and my wife had a delicious smoky fish dish. The others I was with enjoyed their curries and biryani too. There is plenty of parking nearby in the station car park. There's space for push chairs and some high chairs available. Overall highly recommended.

Me and my family arrived at the restaurant with high expectations. The nadan kozhi curry like the name was in a river. We expected fresh parrota but the parrota was frozen and warmed up. It was a waste of time and money. I don’t recommend kayal for my friends.

Brilliant Keralan cuisine and an ambience that takes you back to the backwaters ("Kayal", in Malayalam). Must visit for those who love those spices from the south of India!

One of the best south Indian I've been to. Being a South Indian myself I can confirm that the food is excellent and all the south Indian items are very authentic. Staff are excellent they are very polite and service is pretty quick. Vio and Niraj are really very kind and helpful. Lot of veg options and they have big tables for large groups.

There were only two tables taken when we arrived so was surprised to have to chase the waiting staff to order drinks, especially as it was a very hot evening. The food was excellent, but some of the portion sizes were small with only a few petite cubes of lamb in the chef’s signature dish. They really need to up their wine game - the Pinot Grigio was underwhelming and the Merlot tasted really poor.

If I can, I try and avoid Indian food, as I usually can make better myself. However, Kayal is an exception.. I love the parotas and paneer mattar. I haven't tried the dosas, but they do look good.. recommend.

Another superb meal out at this Southern Indian Restaurant. Not your typical curry. Beautifully balanced spices in silky smooth sauces. A bit of a lean toward seafood, but still with plenty of meat and vegetarian choices. Highly recommend the Appam to soak up the liquid. A refreshing change from the usual Bangladeshi style Indian restaurant. We were very happy with the menu, the food and the service. The prices of the mains were reasonable but the starters and sides were a bit too much.

Good service, very friendly behavior, good ambience, ala carte items have taste. But the price is a good knife. Twice the price of a regular restaurant! Similarly, do not order non-veg thali under any circumstances thinking it is Malayali food. Its base is plain basmati rice and batura.

I went to Kayal West Byfleet with my partner and his mother. This restaurant was recommended to us by one of my partner's Indian colleagues some years ago. Since trying the restaurant about 5 - 6 years ago, we've been going every few months. We're not local to West Byfleet, so we only come when in the area. We choose to have their fish dishes, my partner especially likes the tilapia cooked/presented in a banana leaf. I have had this dish as well, but I also like to try other fishy options, last night it was the fish curry, my mother-in-law also had this and we both loved it although she found it a little hot. We mentioned it to Vio (very keen on football) who very helpfully came back with two little pots of yogurt, this was much appreciated. From the first time we went there, we found Vio (and the team) to be extremely helpful and efficient. And of course the food is delicious! We'll be back again, and again...

Had a really tasty meal last night with friends - 6 of us ate dinner, and all of us enjoyed the food we had. The dosas are amazing, and all of the dishes were well presented and extremely nice and good value for money. The staff realised we had a birthday celebration in our group, and Vio, who looked after us all evening, was kind enough to bring us a special desert "on the house" which was a delightful and much appreciated touch. Always recommended for good southern Indian food - we will certainly be back to Kayal again.

One of the best kerala cuisine/ malayali food in UK. Experienced delicious food. Friendly cheerful staff. Premises are clean and good ambience. Presentation of food was nice. I 'd love to visit again and i would recommend best place to go with your friends or family. Overall Excellent service.

Food is authentic and delicious!!

We have been going to the Kayal since just after it opened a few years ago. we have taken others there who have really enjoyed it too. The food is quite simply superb IMHO. My wife and I go at least once a week for the fantastically valued Business Lunch, a delicious Sadaya (Thali) of different curries and rice. With a drink each this comes at the astonishingly low price of just over £20!! No praise too high and Vio looks after us very well.

Had another wonderful seafood curry, always delicious and the service was excellent. Vio was welcoming and the fact that he remembered what I liked made me feel very special. Highly recommended.

Kayal has good ambience which gives you vibes of a typical kerala restaurant(in uk). Has wide variety of food in its menu and nothing felt over priced. Say around 10 pounds per person excluding drinks. And coming to drinks they do serve Indian beers like Kingfisher. Service was great and the staffs where friendly... We ordered a sea food platter which wasn't the best I ve tried... We also ordered beef roast which was okay... Will visit again during lunch time as i am told that their lunch menu is better... Has limited parking on site, so might struggle a bit during peak hours... Even though food wasn't exceptional, the overall experience was satisfactory. Will definitely try again and update...

Great food. I wouldnt claim that this is the authentic malayali cuisine as the recipe is customised to accomodate the taste buds of our English counterpart (less spicy). 😅 But i would still recommend the food. Some dishes i enjoy are the Appam, porotta, Tilapia pollichadhu, poth ularthiyadhu, adipoli aadu.

Absolutely beautiful and traditional South Indian cuisine! Being a pescatarian, restaurants in my local area usually have very little options to choose from until I found this gem. I was recommended a fish dish from a very charismatic waitor called Vio, he was extremely professional offering a sublime service to me and my mum, give the man a raise! The food was extreemley delicious offering plenty of tasty vegetarian options to choose from. My fish dish was cooked to perfection, melted in my mouth and the portions were also very generous and good value. I was most impressed as my standards are high indeed, thanks again Vio for such a great experience who was also fluent in Spanish and multiple languages. I will most certainly visit again!

Absolutely amazing food and service! We've been coming here for years and it's always consistent. They are always accommodating and we've never had a bad meal. The staff are brilliant, especially Vio who has excellent customer service skills and has always been welcoming and friendly.

Food was bang average, they gave me a giant samosa when I asked for a vegi curry, they don't seem to know the difference between spicy hot to mild, the Chinese waiter probably gave me covid and the foods bloody expensive.

Food was tasty and service was great

The taste of the food took one back to Kerala India. The chicken biryani and egg curry hit the right spot. Would have preferred the chicken on the bone nevertheless it was full of flavour. The seafood was cooked to perfection. The prawns were not overcooked and sautéed just right with minimal amount of flavours yet bold hurting the right spot.

Visited the restaurant at the last minute, and it did not disappoint. Food was lovely especially the Tilapia fish. Very well seasoned. Big shout to Vio who really looked after us. Keep up your fantastic service.

Kayal has the potential to be great. Menu reads well and the flavours are good. They rebranded a year or so back and now serve the curries in odd large-lipped bowls. This means you need a side plate to put your rice on. Value for money is really not up to par here though. I ordered the 'chefs signature' lamb curry, £16.45, "Tender cubes of lamb". But I only got a few small grisly pieces (see photo). The meen curry was better but at £17 before rice and breads it had better be! Bill was in the 60s for some poppadoms, 2 curries, one rice, one appam, two desserts and two half drinks. We pay less at our favourite Sri Lankan restaurant in central London...

The service was great, attentive and also talked us through various parts of the menu. My partner and I went for the vegetarian thali each and it is absolutely fantastic value, really nice selection of curries and lot's of them! Our server, Vio, was friendly...

Here's something different from your every day Indian restaurant. I'm no expert on the region this food comes from, but I'm keen to get better acquainted.

Both the biryanis (Veg and Lamb) were amazing. Perfectly spiced and cooked to perfection. Really enjoyed this meal. Order was on time. Will definitely order again.
