Reasonable food but small portions and very expensive

The business model of a lot of small businesses / cafes is to make essential things ‘extra’. So if you want a hot drink or toast with your breakfast, these things are an additional cost to the breakfast itself. Fair enough. Small cafes have a lot of overheads and they have to find their margin somehow. The trouble is, if you are running a business in this way, you had better make sure the breakfast itself is excellent otherwise people feel they’ve been ripped off. I visited at about 11am on a weekday. The place should have been busy with tradesmen and shoppers, as it’s a time for late breakfasts and early lunches. Apart from one other person, my friend and I were the only ones there. It did seem very empty, I ordered mushrooms, beans, toast, a fried egg, tomatoes and a coffee (note the lack of meat, which is a more expensive ingredient). This set me back ten quid. What I got was a decent but small mug of coffee (£3). I asked for and got hot milk on the side. For all the fanfare on the signage about local high -quality ingredients (hello trade descriptions act) I could hardly believe the breakfast itself. I ordered tomatoes (note the plural) and said plum tomatoes if they had them would be fine. I got one small supermarket tomato cut in half. The toast was not cut from a loaf, as advertised on the chalk board. It was just *one* slice of the flimsiest type of very processed, poor quality sliced bread. The egg was fine. The beans were ridiculous. They were served in a teeny tiny little bowl, the size of bowl that your chilli dipping sauce might be served in, in a restaurant. I reckon it was between two to three eggcups worth of beans. Mushrooms were so-so, supermarket/cash-and-carry style mushrooms. They were cooked quite well but unremarkable. They too weren’t provided in any quantity. For a tenner, you expect better than this! What is the point of skimping on ingredients which cost pennies once the customers are through the door? Your overheads remain the same. Provide two slices of toast. Provide a proper amount of beans. Serve more than one tomato. The plate that was put in front of me actually looked embarrassingly empty. It was literally 50% bare plate and 50% food. I will never go back but if I can be a warning to others then it wasn’t a wasted trip.

What a fabulous place! Fresh, fresh, fresh. Wonderful food all prepared on site by Kate. My, this girl can cook! It’s my go to restaurant in Portswood. Keep up the good work.

The second time, very disappointed. The reason is that my boyfriend and I both order a similar brunch, he has ham + egg + chips, and I have sausage + egg + chips. When the waitress came, she made a mistake about our food, so my boyfriend took mine as his and sprinkled vinegar on the fries. And then we immediately reacted, so I said I'd change the fries. The waitress asked for an extra charge and accused us of being the problem. I feel very angry about this and I don't mind paying extra, but I don't accept that it's my problem. Her explanation of the incident: When he offered my dish to my boyfriend, my boyfriend said yes. But saying yes is just a habitual colloquial word that means yes pls. You're a waitress. Figure out customers orders ur responsibility. Plus, what's even funnier is that I've never been accused by a waitress in a restaurant, telling me in my face that this is my problem and I'm going to pay for it. I am very unhappy with this service and will not come again.

Went for mother's day brunch. They had no brown bread or orange juice. I asked for my poached egg well done and it was runny and they didn't bring the tap water we asked for. Having said that the food was very nice and tasty and the mint tea had a good flavour. I thought the food was reasonably priced. My son had a panini and it came with a decent amount of salad.

Been here a few times so wanted to take my girlfriend here when she was visiting. It’s amazing how It gets better every time. You can tell everything is quality sourced and it was cooked to perfection. Also, I will definitely be putting chives on my mushrooms from now on! Keep independent spots like this alive my friends.

We had the best breakfast experience in the UK thanks to Kate’s Café! A small, cozy restaurant with great and welcoming atmosphere and incredibly friendly Staff. The food was impeccable, fresh and so good we ordered twice. My personal favorite was the salmon bagel and the full English breakfast ❤️ we will definitely come back :)

The breakfast hash is a must! Kate baked a lovely a lovely chocolate orange cake today and gifted me with a free slice to go! The waitress was also kind and provided good service ;)

Lovely cafe in Portswood area of Southampton. The owner & staff are very friendly & welcoming. The menu has traditional breakfast fayre with added modern twists like smashed avocado. Also nice tht the sausages & bacon are sourced locally from a farm. Definitely worth a visit. The food is delicious

The dish that was given to us was not as explained on the menu, no sesame paninis , it also says on the menu paninis are served with side salad and coleslaw whereas the proportiionality of the salads was literally funny especially coleslaw, i was loving it however it is not so good anymore

Lovely place only downside for me was full English breakfast for what you get over priced £9.50 one sausage one egg small cup of beans. I would of done 2 sausages 2 eggs .But It did taste very nice cooked fresh and hot

Had a very tasty and reasonably priced Vegan cooked breakfast. My friend who is a Coeliac also enjoyed her gluten free bacon sandwich. Always a good strong cup of tea served. What a cracking local gem. Lovely atmosphere, attentive and friendly staff. Using quality ingredients at fair prices. Cannot believe I had not stepped through this door before, though I am sure I will fix that error regularly from now on. Bravo.

Very rarely eat in Portswood but found myself there today and needed a breakfast. After a quick google all the best reviews came for this place. Greeted with a big smile is always a good start, lots of nice things on the menu and decided to go with a full English. It arrived quickly and very fresh. All very good quality and delicious, washed down with a great mug of tea. I will be going back. If you find yourself in Portswood, id highly recommend this place.

Hash browns tasted like they were microwaved. Boiling on the outside and the sides but stone cold in the middle. Hash browns aren't hard to cook, do better.

Got back here for a full English after many years and breakfast it’s amazing as I remembered, the dining area is spacious and comfortable and give you beach theme vibes really pretty. Kate and her team outstanding service and smiles. I cannot recommend enough this gem in portswood high street!! Don’t miss it

I like this small cafe lounge but I have noticed that they serve smaller portion than before. The bread is hit and miss, sometimes very good quality crusty bread and other times very cheap bread.

Honestly could not reccomend Kate's Cafe enough. The best place for breakfast, always spot on everytime. Big fan of the breakfast options and lovely coffee ☕ one of the main reasons I come into Portswood since moving more central :)

Very disappointed as I was looking for a nice snack as a full time carer and a rest from my duties. Strange man wearing cycle helmet kept entering kitchen area. Then fervent attempt to clean table. Very noisy and not relaxing at all. Not pleasant at all.

Kate's Cafe is such a gem and we have missed it so much during the pandemic. So when it recently reopened we couldn't wait to get back. So what is special about Kate's? Firstly the food is good, well prepared and delivered to the table by the lovely and friendly staff. Also, during these dark times, it is as safe as it can get. Distanced tables, strict on track and trace and the wearing of masks. The welcome is second to none but the only thing that is missing is seeing Kate's infectious smile when you arrive. Sadly hidden behind a mask, when we are all free of having to wear them, we will be back to being in the perfect cafe again

Vegan brunch... bit pricey, but did the job. Lovely hash browns. Linda McCartney sausages.. well presented. Would prefer a teapot for a tea rather than mug with a tea bag... however tasty and filling

Stupendous. The best breakfast in portswood. The staff are always tremendoult friendly, a varied menu with good covid measures in place. Vegetarian breakfast is to die for.

I was meeting a friend at Kate's Cafe who hasn't been there before & we both had a great time. My friend said that she would go back. The owner & staff are all very friendly & attentive especially at times that we are all experience at the moment. Looking forward to returning to the cafe really soon for another delicious hot chocolate & maybe a slice of cake

Kate provides an extremely well sourced wholesome breakfasts, I have never tasted better. I would highly recommend and please spread the word! Have definitely missed during this pandemic and looking forward to the time when she officially opens.
