The Little Fryer in Southampton

I have been going to this chip shop since I was at college 10 years ago. The food is really tasty, you definitely get your moneys worth. Food is piping hot and the staff are brilliant, so friendly always up for a chat and make you feel so welcomed. I have a chip-shop not far from my house, however I always take that extra journey on the bus to come here as it is one of the best around Southampton. Keep up the great work.

It’s great to find a fish and chip shop that offers gluten free fish and chips and more – even better when it’s so tasty. The owner understands the importance of gluten free food and her staff are trained up to her standards. The shop can be very busy so please allow a bit of waiting time or phone ahead.

Has been our default chippy for over a decade. Food is always excellent and the staff are very friendly. Prices are very reasonable given the portion sizes. It can get busy at times, particularly on a Friday night.

Definitely my favourite fish and chip shop, the staff are lovely, so welcoming! The price is good, and the quality is amazing! I've never had any issues, even the delivery staff are so kind and they are very quick, everyone seems like they are enjoying themselves and it adds to a cheery atmosphere when you walk in! Couldn't go back to any other fish and chip shop, this one is the best. 10/10 would recommend 😁

Food was great and portions sizes filled up the whole family, the cheesy garlic chips are highly recommend as they are full of flavour. The staff are always so polite and we are looking forward to our next visit.

Regularly order chip suppers for delivery and cannotfault the food, deliver or service…. However last nights food was pretty poor…. Delivery was for between 6pm-7pm and they arrived around 7pm… delivery man was friendly and personable….the food was cold and the large cod I ordered was only large as it was covered in thick batter…. What fish there was underneath was thin, cold and tasted like it was fried yesterday. Called back to complain to be told they were too busy to deal with me. Called back again around hour later and owners son was rude and dismissive…. I’m sorry Deidre but you just lost a loyal customer !!!

This is not a review about food but about the caring and lovely staff who looked after my mum last night. Mum had gone out to the shops. It was bitterly cold and she became disorientated. The lovely staff looked after her, gave her a cup of tea and chips, phoned me to tell me she was safe and drove her home. I think the lady was called Deidre. I can't thank them enough.

Gluten free fish and chips! I've seen this place recommended by fellow GF bloggers before in Southampton, and thought whilst I was there I'd give it a go. What was a stressful 20 minutes drive to find it, turned out to be time well spent. The staff were so lovely and there was such an extensive gluten free menu, all cooked separately. I had battered cod, chips and a pea fritter. The batter was so light and not greasy at all. Price was also very reasonable

I used to go to The Little Fryer when I was alot younger. Brings back memories. I went there today before work to get myself a little something as I can't get dinner at work. It was as good as it was when I was little, and it really helped me. Be on the look out for Dee / Deidre by the way, she served me now as she did when I was little. As fine customer service as the food is. Here's to you, Little Fryer staff!

First time trying having just moved back in area . Chips were fine, curry sauce lukewarm, fish was so over cooked fish inside had disintegrated, we were very disappointed.

I called ahead as the shop was due to close at 2pm and re-opening later.A lovely Irish lady answered and did confirm they were closing at 2pm but if i gave my order over the telephone they would have it all ready and waiting for collection.Well true to her word i popped in (and social distancing measures were in place with hand sanitizer about the place).She is very friendly and very chatty,asking me how my day had been and making polite conversation with me.My friend and i (he was sat in the car) had a small portion of chips and small cod each with mushy peas.We were both pleasantly surprised that the 'small portions' were nothing but (very happy!).It came as no surprise as to why there are so many good reviews about the little fryer and not to mention awards they have won.This is the gold standard of fish shops and they really do lead by example.But don't take my word for it.Go and visit yourself and taste the difference between this and other fish shops you may have thought (at the time) were your favorite.We will be returning.Many thanks little fryer for the delicious food and the very warm welcome.

This has to be the worst customer service I have ever experienced ! I simply asked if they done a family sized chips with a reply “if it says it on the menus you can have it for free”. I walked out and will never go to this place again!

First time visit (recommended by my nephew) ….. but not my last. Lots of menu items to choose from, (inc gluten free) and staff are happy to answer any questions and make suggestions. My order was cooked fresh to order and was hot and tasty with good size portions. quality products The staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. I will be back. Support local business.

Never fails to be perfect, worth a journey to get the best. There’s loads of fish and chip shops about but I wouldn’t use anywhere else

A good friend of mine recommended the little fryer as we’re both gluten intolerant so I thought I’d give them a go.As an ex chef I know intolerances can be tricky too cater for and I know most chefs roll there eyes when having too cater for people with intolerances ( I did ) but that didn’t change the fact that I still made sure that I could make said meal with the same passion and too best standard.This really shows with the chicken burger i had this evening I know it’s not gourmet and is only a chicken burger but in all honesty it was the best gluten free chicken burger I’ve ever had. They seem too actually care about people with intolerances/coeliac disease.The crunch was there with the batter the spices used in the gluten free flour made it almost like a Kentucky style,fresh lettuce the bun wasn't your cheap dry variety is was fresh and very enjoyable. Also extremely filling.I did read in previous reviews of someone being abrupt I can’t say I had that at all as my first time in there the lady cooking gave me a bit of banter which I found welcoming even though she did tell me too wait outside after ordering but as there was a mother and child in there I completely get that in the times were in and they brought my meal too my car. But then again I guess I’m not a snow flake. Definitely won’t be my last visit.

Had the best ever haddock and chips I have ever had from The Little Fryer in Bitterne. Really clean shop with friendly staff members. Also my son said this was his favourite!

We decided to try the Homemade Crispy Chicken Breast Sandwich as we had seen pictures. We were def not disappointed!!!!! It was delicious. The little shop is packed with great food and excellent customer service delivered by very passionate hard working staff delivering fresh food cooked to order. This may mean a wait but trust me its worth it. Keep up the good work everyone.

Don’t normally leave reviews. I feel I have to after what I saw today. I Walked in on owner shouting at a customer. She refused to give her money back, then poured half a bottle of vinegar over the lady food. She was coming across as very aggressive and felt really sorry for the customer. Who left her food and run out of the door in floods of tears. It seems to be the owner only seems to like locals. You don’t talk to paying customers the way she did today. She made everyone feel very uncomfortable including her staff members who all turned there backs and run off.

This is the 2nd time we have been to the little fryer having recently moved back to Southampton from Marbella, Spain and we were searching for a fish and chip shop that were able to offer gluten free options. On our first visit a couple of weeks ago we were really impressed, all of the food was cooked to order and the gluten free batter on the fish was light crispy and tasted lovely. Our first visit was just the two of us but tonight on our second visit we pre ordered for 13, infact our order started as 9 then we rang back to add two more orders then two more. (13 in total). They had no problems amending our order twice and were friendly and accommodating. Upon collection of our food the order was spot and the gluten free order was even out in a separate bag. The shop is immaculately clean, they provide generous portions, the staff are friendly and one who originates from near Dublin had a decent singing voice. We would definitely recommend The little Fryer and will be going back again.

Amazing chip shop even with gluten free options the only one within a large mile radius. All staff are very friendly and helpful very clued you with cross contamination etc. Highly recommend

First time customer at this fish and chip shop and felt incredibly unwelcomed as soon as I walked in. My girlfriend is a newly diagnosed coeliac so ordering GF is very new to me, I tried to ask a question and was met with hostility by the owner. Tried to amend an order that I placed literally 5 seconds before that I hadn’t paid for yet and was met with disgust by the owner who walked around holding raw chicken in her hand and essentially shut me down as she had already prepared the order before I finished ordering - she said ‘I can’t sell this anyone if you don’t buy it’. I felt completely taken back like I had done something wrong (so much for customer always being right) and felt as though I would’ve had to pay even if I cancelled the order. I felt so intimidated and inferior and what made it worse was the guy after me, she treated absolutely fine.The food then ended up having hair in it too.Awful customer service, rude intimidating owner, hair in food.Unfortunately for my girlfriend, that’s one less gluten free food place we won’t be visiting again.

Qué descubrimiento tan asombroso. Muy contento de encontrar este lugar. Sirven deliciosa comida sin gluten todos los días. A mis dos hijos les diagnosticaron celiaquía hace unos meses y pensaron que nunca más podrían comer pescado con papas fritas. Pero gracias a La pequeña freidora disfrutaron de pescado, patatas fritas y salchicha rebozada con salsa de curry también. El servicio fue fantástico y el tipo que atendió nuestro pedido claramente era un experto en lo que es una dieta celíaca segura. Como mi hija lo acuñó 'lugar encantador y gente encantadora', para poner la guinda del pastel, la comida también era deliciosa. Definitivamente vamos a volver.

Como todos sabemos, hay un montón de comida para llevar Fish 'n Chip, pero ocasionalmente te encuentras con una que está muy por encima de las demás. El personal, el servicio, el extenso menú y por supuesto la calidad de la comida.Todo se cocina fresco a pedido, puede llamar por teléfono con un pedido y estará listo cuando llegue. Durante el cierre, el personal realmente hizo un esfuerzo adicional para servirnos comida recién preparada de manera segura tanto para ellos como para los clientes.

This is an absolute gem of a find for any chippy tea fan! Always fresh cooked chips, no reheated dried up toss here! The fish is always perfectly cooked, no nasty thick soggy batter, just the right balance of batter to fish. The owners are superb people people, always cheerful and chatty. If you are on a gluten-free diet, you too can have a stunning chippy tea as they also carry a full GF menu!Even my northern mate was impressed!

My family and I have been using The Little Fryer for almost 5 years and have never had a bad meal. Would never go anywhere else now. The lady that owns it is so friendly and meticulous with the quality of the food. The shop always looks squeaky clean and all staff are so friendly and helpful. Their gluten free menu is insane and all the food just tastes great. The chips aren’t greasy and soggy like lots of other chip shops I’ve tried.

We were in Southampton for a weekend break back a few weeks ago,we were feeling a bit peckish so decided to try this place" The little fryer" theres one thing for sure,WE WERENT DISAPPOINTED, the food was amazing ( we could not fault it) the taste of the batter was the best I have ever tasted on a fish,it was so light & definitely not greasy, I wouldn't normally be a chip eater but the ones from here was absolutely delicious,plenty on the menu to order from & the staff were lovely,would have no problem recommending this place to anyone, oh we later found out it was own by a Irish lady called Deride who is so down to earth

I love that the food is cooked to order so it’s fresh every time. There is a good variety on the menu so always something to eat even if you don’t fancy fish. If something is wrong you should always contact the owner as it will always be put right so I think the negative comments are very unfair. I’ve only ever had 1 small problem in the many years I’ve been using this chippy & it was resolved immediately & with politeness & an apology - I’ve never known any rudeness. The staff are friendly & polite.

Another wonderful take away experience from the family run chip shop where nothing is too much trouble. Gluten free menu excellent choice, and option for steamed fish fabulous for those wanting watch their weight. Great to preorder with a specific collection time reassuring in these exceptional times. I can never fault this place! Food is always delicious and presented with such care. The whole team have great customer service skills, always extremely polite and friendly over the phone and face to face. Reading some of the bad reviews on here really baffles me because I can say over the 5+ years I have been going here I can’t agree with what I am reading at all! Especially with the pandemic we are in at these times I think they are doing a particularly amazing job. Well done to you all and thank you.

I am giving this place only one star because of the owners rudeness.After waiting an hour and a half for my food I called the place to ask why it's taking this long to deliver (I live in Bitterne, so it's relatively close to the place). They gave me a time frame about when it would be delivered and obviously they didn't respect that, thus my call. She told me on sarcastic tone that there is a pandemic going on (as if I didn't know) and they are also short staffed and they are doing their best. Followed by some intimitading comments like.... "I am the owner, I am the cook, you called me for your food. Now tell me you want to wait another 20 min or cancel the order?"So yeah... After waiting almost 2h for my food I wasn't even impressed... You had to try and find the fish underneath all that oily batter and it wasnt even hot. The only things that were hot were the fish pies.Don't think I'll order any time soon from them.

Staff are friendly, food is cooked fresh to order by people who care about their food and want customers to be happy. I have always been happy with my orders and will continue using them

Freidora usada por muchos años y los estándares caen rápidamente una y otra vez. . . comida fría entregada previamente, y esta noche la comida estaba tibia pero el pescado no valía la pena. . . el pez grande en la foto era 2/3 del tamaño del pez anterior y muy pesado en la masa, y mi pez más pequeño (grande o pequeño en el menú) es bueno, ¡muy pequeño! Yo diría que la porción de niños en comparación con lo que hemos tenido anteriormente. Tienes que esperar, pero como todo se cocina fresco, tiene sentido, si no quieres esperar, ve a comer a McDonalds (será tu pérdida). Regularmente llamamos con anticipación para evitar tener que esperar mucho. Durante los períodos ocupados (viernes a la hora del té) puede esperar un poco, pero si tiene gente haciendo cola fuera de la puerta, es de esperar, pero, de nuevo, si fuera basura, no estarían haciendo cola fuera de la puerta. Acabo de tener la desagradable experiencia de ordenar, y luego, eventualmente, tratar de comer pescado y papas fritas desde aquí. No solo fue mucho más rápido para mi hijo pedir una comida china de al lado, sino que también tuvimos que esperar otros 25 minutos antes de que finalmente nos sirvieran. Parecía haber dos jóvenes desventurados detrás del mostrador haciendo la "fritura". Parecían más interesados en bromear que en hacer el trabajo. The lady in charge tonight, treats her staff like piece of dirt, screaming and shouting at all of them particularly one boy. When a another customer told her to stop, Explaining that if they are doing things wrong you should talk to them privately, she then started shouting at her customer try to intimidate her. The behavouir was complete disrespectful . It then became all four young staff fault for her rudeness and incompetency to listen to them. The young staff members are doing amazing and they all deverse to work somewhere that treats them with respect they deverse. I will never be going back!

This chip shop is most excellent Piping hot food cooked fresh from a great menu choice The food is always delicious ! The only downside is you have to wait quite a while if you go there They do deliver and that seems to be the priority but if you don't mind waiting give it a try

Creo que las malas críticas aquí son muy injustas. He estado yendo a esta tienda por algunos años y siempre he tenido un buen servicio. Es genial tener un extenso menú sin gluten y un personal capacitado y con conocimientos, muy tranquilizador. Si va en las horas punta, simplemente llame antes, es muy fácil y no tiene que esperar. Ordered by phone. 2 pies and small chips. Got there and no record of order. Had 2 pies there but manageress raised her voice to me and said there were no large chips her staff would never put large chips up in cabinet. As I'd only ordered small chips i didn't know what she was talking about. Then a guy cooking shouted over and said "how many are you taking ?' at this point I decided to leave and went to Charlie's!

Had to have a half pounder burger on the weekend as not had one in ages, as someone who likes a nice burger I can honestly say these are absolutely mouth watering and I would highly recommend to anyone who likes a nice chippy dinner or tea

This is a small Fish and chip shop which we sourced through trip adviser. I am a coeliac so fish and chips is a real treat for me to buy out. I can honestly say this lady Deirdre knows her stuff! Not a coeliac herself but has staff who are and she knows the ins and outs of it all. They have a large menu Gluten free with separate fryers and she knows the cross contamination dangers.

Pero el servicio fue malo! ¡Pedí dos papas fritas grandes y pedí un puñado de papas fritas en una bolsa separada sin sal y vinagre! "Lo siento no se le permite hacer eso! " ¿Por qué no? ? ? ¿Por qué no puedes tomar un puñado de papas fritas y colocarlas en otra bolsa, para que mi pequeño pueda tener papas fritas y mis hijos mayores puedan comer papas con sal y vinagre? ? ? ¡No entiendo por qué esto no se puede hacer! Porque seamos honestos, ¡nada es mejor que la sal y el vinagre de la pasta! ! ! ¡Nunca es lo mismo cuando se hace en casa! ! ! ! ! I use The Little Fryer on a regular basis.I have always received exceptional service from the team and the food is second to none.There is a wide variety of options on the menu and the food is always hot and fresh.Once you try The Little Fryer, you won't go to any other Fish n Chip shop.

After waiting for 30 minutes, i was presented with the absolutely worst fish and chips i (and my family) had ever had!! cost over £16 and it was inedible. I will not be visiting this establishment again. Just tasteless grease. Avid avoid avoid!!!

Each time i go here the food is always cooked to perfection. Chips are lovely, the chilli is amazing. Great for gluten free too. Never ever had a bone in the fish, the chicken burgers are lovely too. Great staff always helpful and friendly.

Rude staff, inedible fish, was promised replacement fish, then refused even though they had our complaint in their hand. Rude management!! Will not go back. Waited a long time for inedible food. Staff picking nose and wiping forehead behind counter and still serving. How disgusting!! Glad didn't get my little girl a meal from here! Bit goid customer service. Need to do a refresher course on customer service. Trading standards will be informed and eho officer will be informed too.

Visited back in August and only just getting round to reviewing the place. As a couple who both have gluten intolerances we miss out of the luxuries of fish and chips, this place has proved that there is no excuse to exclude those who have food intolerances in restaurants and fast food!

Not visited for about 6 months. Surprised to see the prices gone up, fish at £3.95 (small ) and £4.95 ( large ) is a tad expensive compared to some others. You can get a nice steak for £4.95- though have to cook it I know - but still not cheap.

Empecé a ir a The Little Fryer recientemente ya que un miembro de mi familia tiene intolerancia al gluten. En primer lugar, es el único chippy que conozco en la zona, que ofrece un menú completo sin gluten (también vale la pena señalar que los productos sin gluten se empaquetan por separado y están claramente etiquetados), en segundo lugar muy satisfecho con el nivel de los alimentos. Las patatas fritas son buenas y obtuve un trozo de pescado en mi última visita, que fue fantástico y, como llegó en su propia caja, no tuve ese problema de rebozado que puedes encontrar en otro sitio, quedé impresionado por la atención al detalle.

La comida es excelente pescado grande y patatas fritas pequeñas, en cajas de cartón, muy elegante, y un poco caro, pero la calidad de la comida lo merece, allí con el mejor pescado en patatas fritas en el Reino Unido. Aunque todo está recién hecho, una espera de 20 minutos parecía un poco excesiva. El personal era agradable, aunque los chicos que se movían detrás del mostrador claramente no estaban preocupados por la impresión que tenían.

Have been here a few times. I am coeliac and can always guarantee good gluten free batter. Finding a chip shop that does gluten free everyday is rare so would definitely recommend this place

Disculpas por la larga revisión. Tuvimos la suerte de ganar un cupón para dos fish and chips de The Little Fryer en un evento recientemente. Usé este cupón esta noche y, como familia, estábamos muy emocionados ya que habíamos escuchado cosas buenas. Ahora no había pedido ganar el cupón y pensé que, si ofrecían uno, podrían haber tenido un sistema en el que, si se presentaba, supieran si era genuino o no. Entiendo completamente que pueden tener algunos problemas con el fraude y simpatizar con esto, pero como nadie me habló directamente, me hizo sentir como si estuvieran seguros de que era un criminal.

Después de un pequeño encuentro en Google para nuevos lugares sin gluten para comer encontré este lugar, leí los comentarios, me emocioné mucho y fui a probarlo. . . . . . Después de leer otras críticas claramente necesitaba ponerme directamente con sus chips de ajo con queso y anhelar la ansia de bacalao de la tienda de chips que he tenido por más meses de los que me importa admitir que también se requería un gran bacalao maltratado. También otra gran ventaja es que no tiene que reservar su antojo de chippy para un día determinado, ya que, además de un domingo cuando están cerrados todos los días, es un día libre de gluten. Soy 100% impaciente, así que llamé por adelantado y pedí que estuviera listo en 20 minutos para la recolección y así fue. También entregan, pero, lamentablemente, estamos fuera de la zona a la que se entregan, pero no hay problema mientras conducimos. . . . . I am Mr Greedy. I had a large cod and cheesy chips, lovingly prepared by their keen and efficient proprieter. I pass there every day and can readily see that it is very popular. It is on the main bus routes from town and well worth a visit.

Nan and Grandad both thoroughly enjoyed Cod and Chips. Great value for pensioners, beautiful white fish great tasting batter and lovely chips, all serviced with a smile.

Excellent pea fritters & battered sausage! Batter is perfect, not too much or little, nice and crisp but not too greasy.

You need to go there. A perfect little english chippie with warm Irish charm. The menue features gluten free and the portions are more than generous. My own personal favourite is cheese and garlic chips. You'll not go anywhere else once you've tried them.

As an American what do I know about English chip shops, the food was the very best I have ever eaten of it's kind. The chips were hot and heavenly, the fish was cooked to perfection and the batter was crisp and to die for, just the way Mom used to cook it. Great portions and whilst waiting for the fish to cook (which I was happy to do) I had time to checkout the food options which were vast and varied. We will be back!!!

Been using this chippy for years, so when D started doing gluten free made it even better. Always get a welcoming smile from the staff, good quality food at reasonable prices & the staff seem to be very good at remembering your usual orders. If you are lucky you may even get offered a tea or coffee while waiting for your order. As my other half is a coeliac the gluten free options are ideal, i`ve even got hooked on it. Been going to the little fryer for years and is simply the best chippy in southampton. Food is always amazing and the staff are always friendly would give a rating of 6/5 is i could.

I have visited this chip shop a few times as a coeliac and I have never had better gluten free food than here! Staff are very knowledgeable, wearing gloves and changing utensils when bagging up the food. It is always piping hot and absolutely delicious and also good value! I can highly recommend this lovely family run shop.
