This is a great store & café based on the outskirts of Ottery St Mary right next to the garden centre. The shop has lots of healthy options and local food, drink and crafts. There is good supply of fresh fruit & Veg, cheese, local eggs and a great selection of cakes & bread baked within store. After a god shop or look around head into the café for coffee & cake, sandwiches & their own quiches, they even do chips now! If visiting the garden centre or passing by on the A30 take a detour you will not be disappointed. Good food, good choice and great staff. We love it!

My family and I use Joshua's regularly, for lunch & shopping. Recently, after doing a bit of both, my sister went to use the facilities, but unfortunately they were left unfit for purpose by a previous user. So she naturally informed the dower-faced proprietor and two of the ladies, who serve us regularly... After a brief inspection, all three then began to berate, mock and 'poo poo' my sister, whilst she continued to mooch in the store. I am sensible that British customer service is generally appalling, but find it so disappointing that a favoured place to eat and shop is now off-limits, due to ill-mannered immaturity. Such a shame!

Pleasant enough but the reason we won't return is that I had to clear all the dirty plates from our table and the wait for our coffee was so long we nearly left. When it was eventually delivered to the table I had cleaned ,there was no apology for the lengthy wait. Coffee ok but not made to feel it was somewhere I would want to return.

My husband and I decided to visit this restaurant today. We were at Ottery and the queue was quite long for food so we decided to pop over the road to try this place out. I was quite excited as I’d heard good things so I was hoping for a nice hot meal. We got to the restaurant bit and it was a small counter. One of the staff said we wouldn’t be waiting long as they were going about taking orders through to the kitchen, all good. Then a lady abruptly asked my husband what we wanted. Anyone would think that he’d insulted her the way she spoke to him. Really rude, abrupt, obviously unhappy in her job today. I won’t embarrass her by naming her or describing her, but her attitude certainly made an impression on us. We were told to find a table. All of the tables that weren’t occupied had the remains of the previous customers plates etc on them. There was a member of staff doing nothing at all, I’m sure she could see the state of the tables and just go and clear them, but no, we had to clear the table ourselves . It wasn’t busy in there, seemed to be a slow flow of customers. I luckily had some wet wipes in my bag and wiped the table top down as it had debris on. The wet wipe was grey when I lifted it up…after several wipes it was still grey, to me this shows that the tables aren’t thoroughly cleaned. I should’ve left then but I gave it a chance. We were sat waiting and this gave me a chance to look more closely at the area. The walls were dirty, as was the skirting. The nearby sofa had food under it, the sofa also needed a clean. The floors were generally unclean with lots of food debris. Dust on most surfaces, window sills etc. one family decided to sit outside as they considered it too dirty to eat in. So I’m sat there hoping the kitchen was cleaner than the dining area. I noticed a member of staff come out with a grey looking rag and spray and start to clean one of the tables, to be fair, she looked like she was really wiping the table top well..so I can’t understand why ours was dirty? Anyway, the food arrives. I ordered a cheese and leek lattice. I came with a side of some sort of relish (that was really tasty), a bit of salad with dressing on (I’m not keen on salad dressing so maybe that should be an optional thing for those of us who don’t like salad dressing) and coleslaw and a bean salad (typical tinned type). The lattice was nice, plenty of it too. The rest of the dish I wasn’t keen on. The presentation wasn’t great and the quality of it wasn’t fab but the price was good so I suppose to keep prices competitive they have to cut back on quality a little. My husband ordered a tuna mayo and cucumber sandwich. It had a bit of salad and some tube like crisps. He said the sandwich was ok, nothing special. Drinks were good. I had a chai tea (lovely), he had coffee which was also good. We ordered a piece of cake each from the coffee and walnut cake on display. That was lovely. In all, the food was average, nothing special and it all seemed quite snack based so I suppose if that’s what you’re after, a filling snack..this is the place to go. The dining area needs a deep clean that’s for certain.

We stopped here for a light lunch and ordered BLTs. These were made to order taking account of an individual request to omit butter, the bread was soft and fresh, the bacon tasty and the lettuce crunchy. We enjoyed them in the sunny meadow garden which is a calm natural space. The tables are well spaced. The staff were friendly and helpful. Lunch was very well priced in my opinion. I also enjoyed the selection of foods and healthy goods in the shop, and had to buy a few treats and gifts on the way out. Wish I lived near, it was a welcome find while on holiday.

Really gone down hill in my estimation! Used to have lovely mixed platter boards. I had a dreadful smelling sandwich of Ham Cheese and pickle! Couldn’t decide if pickle or the ham! So left both! Would have said something but already complained about weak flat white, more like an awful latte! They did re make and was a bit better! They serve sandwich up with chilli lentil kind of crisps, let’s face it not everyone likes chilli, either serve with a less overpowering crisp or don’t bother! Side salad had honey and mustard dressing on! Why oh why does everywhere serve up salad drizzled in a dressing. Leave plain and let us add it if we want it! I had to leave as it’s the one salad dressing I do not like, so another part of my meal wasted! The tea was as weak as weak and we had an extra tea bag! Really hate moaning and much prefer writing good reviews but the above has to be said. The staff in cafe however are very pleasant and tables spread out well and outside bit for those like myself who are still wary of COVID. They put notes on table to say sanitised which I thought was a reassuring touch! I will unfortunately not be returning for food and drinks and will advise my friends not to either!!! Such a shame things have change.

I took a friend to the restaurant for tea. I hadn’t been to Joshua’s since well before first lockdown but was always pleased with tea/coffee/service etc. Big disappointment. We requested I x ordinary tea and one rooibos tea. The teas arrived in the identical pots and the young lady serving though very nice wasn’t sure which tea was which. After a bit of tad ting and smelling my friend and I think we sorted. The ordinary tea was very weak even after brewing for a few minutes to the point where I took the teabag and put in her beaker. Definitely not a great visit compared to the restaurant in the garden centre opposite. I woukdcday the shop as always was excellent.

Joshua’s we’ve been visiting you for years, and hadn’t been in for awhile until this week. I must say its gone up a notch. We brought some friends over who were visiting from up country. There seems to be a completely new team working here now, all a lot more ‘customer friendly’ than previous visits. I always use to feel like the older lady who use to do the cafe was always doing us a favour by serving us, as I found her to be quite rude and miserable. The blondie I must say is lovely, very smiley and welcoming. Happy in her job, which is good to see at last! Rather than the glum faces here previous. It has been quite a while since we ate at Joshua’s, as although the food is always amazing, in the last the staff have not been that friendly and one person who I assume was a supervisor, I overheard and was practically bullying the young staff so no wonder they were miserable and unhappy. If my children had been spoken to like that I would have been straight in there and explaining about bullying in the workplace. We went back to Joshua’s last Sunday for the first time in ages, what a difference, what a lovely lot of new staff and such two lovely youngsters in the restaurant. I think one was called Becky. Yes the coffee was very weak, but we just asked if we could have extra coffee, those girls couldn’t have been more helpful or nice and smiling and friendly. Well done girls, we will definitely recommend Joshua’s again due to you, instead of saying I wouldn’t go to Joshua’s we overheard a horrid woman who we think was a supervisor, she was a right nasty piece of work.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was spotlessly clean. As well as the usual menu they have a special hot meal of the day. The food served is all home made and fresh. I had the quiche of the day - mushroom and herb - lovely and fresh, a big portion, with a nice side salad. My husband had the Trenchermans platter which consisted of Chicken, Ham, pate, pickles, a side salad and a fresh roll, again well presented and both meals were delicious. We didnt really have room for cake/pudding, but couldnt resist the cakes on display looked divine. We opted for Bakewell Tart - one portion was plenty for the both of us. Again another big portion. It was both fresh and absolutely delicious. All this and a tea and coffee for less than £25.00!

This is a somewhat quirky dining place, but significantly more appealing than the adjacent Otter Nursery's restaurant which is hideously large, noisy and serves no better than 'canteen' food. Joshua's meals are straightforward 'home cooking' on a modest scale, served in simple but pleasant surroundings. Perhaps the only criticism on a cold winter's day is that the restaurant is not well heated - in fact, we could not spot any form of heating whatsoever, but this can be remedied by choosing one of Joshua's excellent soups as a starter. If we're visiting Otter Nursery for plants etc and want something to eat, it's always worth walking 100 yards down the road to Joshua's rather than suffering the Nursery's 'canteen' conditions.

My wife has been here for a Vegan platter a few months ago and it had avocado, fresh vegetables etc. that was very good. It says on the menu ask if you are Vegan or Gluten free and we can adapt out vegetarian platter. When I ordered I was told, "you mean vegetarian?". I explained that there was a Vegan option and the staff member checked with the chef who said it was ok. I was then asked what type of bread roll I wanted (which she checked with the chef did not have milk in) and we asked for wholemeal rolls. When the meals came, no bread rolls, a few salad leaves, and nuts and other items (photo uploaded with the review). I explained about the roll, we were given corn crackers, tasted of cardboard and only a few, which was not adequate. When thinking of the bread rolls it reminded me of a joke I heard once. "Would it be ok if you had your coffee without cream, as we don't have any milk". When I was talking to the staff about the meal (when ordering, trying to see what we would receive in the meal), one of them pulled a strange face and the other sighed.I have been coming here for 10 years and this has been the worse meal I have ever had here. It is a shame as it is nice to come into and it used to be nice to bring friends to. I think I will now go across the road to Otter Nurseries.

Having been to Joshuas many times before I was expecting great service with a nice lunch but unfortunately didn't experience that today. i ordered a vegan platter, i was asked what sort of bread I wanted and asked for granary but the meal arrived with some sort of crispbread. It also had two tiny pieces of cheese, a small salad, a teaspoon of hummus, a teaspoon of chutney, a pile of raisins, a pile of walnuts and olives. The only thing I fancied from the plate was the hummus and chutney, which i balanced on lettuce due to no bread. I didn't complain because the staff had made me feel really uncomfortable already, I just made the best of a bad thing and went home and made my own lunch there.

Our lunch at Joshua's today would test the patience of a saint. The cafe was reasonably full but not rammed packed. We ordered the hot lunch specials and a pot of tea. The tea was delivered reasonably quickly and I was warned when ordering that there would be a delay. The tea was about the consistency of oxtail soup and although I like it reasonably strong it was too much. A request for extra hot water was produced quickly with a smile. However it went down hill after this as we waited 50 minutes between ordering the meal and delivery. The beef lasangne with roasted veg was tasty and filling and my wife's vegetable and apricot tagine was good. The meals were no more than average value in relation to cost. Fortunately it was pouring with rain outside so there was less incentive to finish and go, otherwise I would have been steaming!

Having been before we were expecting a good experience . The pleasant resturant was not very full when we placed our order so we couldn't believe that we had to wait at least half an hour for coffee and chocolate to arrive . Several people arrived after us and were served before us , but when I queried this an unapologetic assistant replied that orders were being done in turn . It takes time to build a good reputation but this can be lost easily . What a shame the attitude makes us feel like going elsewhere . It is a wasteof a good venue with good parking and shade for the dog . There is another resturant nearby that also has good parking .

This was myself and my partners first trip to Joshuas,so we were completely free of any expectation going.Upon arriving the place looks interesting from the outside,i guess you could say farmshopesque, and upon entering that is exactly what greeted us,lots of shelves filled with homemade fairs..We decided to have lunch as the dining area looked inviting,so we sat and checked out the menu, which aside from a set hot meal offering was mainly jacket potatoes, ploughmans etc, aswell as caked and beverages. So we decided on our meals and i ordered at the counter. The wait was a little long but not excessive.I had ordered a ploughmans type meal which was presented on a chopping board with sauces, nibbles and meats in a selection of bowls, well upon arrival of my meal the waitress tilted the board depositing some of the contents in my lap leaving my clothes ruined. The waitress was apologetic but tried to laugh it off which i found very rude,im not sure who the person in charge was but clearly they didnt care.I cleaned myself up as best i could and carried on with my meal, altho parts of it were missing.Id just like to add that it isnt particulary cheap. We eventually left and was offered no apology from the staff.Having now read other reviews it seems to be a common trend. id like to say that the actual shop is nice, full of quaint items that would be nice as gifts and home furnishings. But my lasting memory of Joshuas will be a poor one..I wont be visiting again.

Ottery We have been visiting the oarestaurant since it first opened and have had a enjoyable lunch. But something has changed on our last few visits. I ordered the brie and bacon roll, it arrived, a finger roll with a small piece of brie in the middle and one rasher of the thinnest streaky bacon. The salmon pate arrived in a minute pickle bowl, hardly enough to cover the huge chunks of toast. The ham roll had mayonnaise spread on it. The homity slice turned into a tart of thick pastry and little filling. The scones have shrunk. And to top it all some of the staff's customer service skills are lacking. We tried to talk to the watress/chef about the homity pie but she did not understand English!

Wednesday afternoon 3rd January and we visted this store for the first time we had been just down the road at Ottery Nurseries. We did not visit the restaurant, however, we did have a look around the store. There was a vast array of goods on display ranging from foodstuff, homemade cakes, biscuits, gift ideas, ornaments, mirrors and other things, the list goes on.We did enjoy browsing there was much to look at, however we did not buy anything as we thought it was all a bit pricey including the home made cakes.

What a lovely place for gifts and bits and bobs , but the coffee shop on the other hand is so unbelievably slow we only ordered tea for two with no food or cakes and it took half an hour . That's just ridiculous they didn't even seem that busy . But they seem to be clearing tables before they actually serve the tables that have already ordered . Won't be returning for food or drink in the future , just to shop .

I called in here with 3 friends for a pre Christmas breakfast treat. The first thing that struck me was the lack of choice on the menu toast , muesli or bacon nap and cakes from the shop.Tea was nice and hot and plentiful.Bacon was pale and tough ? Reheated. a dressed salad came on the plate at 09:30 we found that a bit odd.Cheese scone was cold and butter solid. flapjack came from the shop from an uncovered trayThe whole area was cold .How can such a fabulous shop have such a let down cafe area?Next time we will stick to the shopping.

For many years we have enjoyed going to Joshua's for presents and the odd bit of food but sadly the staff are letting the whole store down. The lady who served us was rude, answered back and was purposely unhelpful. The service was so distressing I almost put my items back as I didn't think she deserved my money.

Every now and then you are fortunate enough to happen upon a store that has personality - something special. This is one of them. A little bit of something for everyone, whether it's homemade jams and marmalade to novelty toys. Fruit and veg together with fresh meat products. There is a very comfortable cafe area. The staff are so polite and helpful and make you feel that you are the only person in the store. People come from miles around to visit this store - and it is well worth the journey. It's a store that mixes the best of the past with the best of today.

This was a mixed bag of an experience. Some food good but some not so good. The smoked salmon pate was excellent, but the beef pasty lacked flavour. Coffee was good, but the Devon Platter was rather short on the cream and jam.Service was unhurried but pleasant. We were a little disappointed, as Joshua's had been recommended to us.

Yes indeed. Extremely slow service even when quiet!?! Rude, naive waiting staff and seemingly offish proprietor. If you've got all day to order coffee, this is your perfect choice. Take a bed. Oh, and if you like your coffee hyper-strong, this is also perfect:take a bucket and dilute with water!

Don' t expect quick service! Great that the restaurant warns you of this with a witty poster. Helpful staff and a good size eating area with pretty views to the surrounding countryside. Food was fresh and delicious. Quite reasonable prices. The restaurant is in the middle of a shopping area that sells lots of lovely nik nak present ideas.( expensive but plenty)- you will get customers walking around you to have a look. Worth a visit! If you order the pate, you may have to ask for a more generous portion. Salmon and avocado sandwich was really good.

The shop sells a lot of local and tasty foods..a bit high priced though...good frozen selection...licensed restaurant with a limited menu ..don't ask for gravy they won't do it...the loaded skins are good...unfortunately they microwave pies so dont bother with that....the ale and cider collection is fair...nice outside area too...a bit clicky and stiff inside...no wifi..worth a visit as unique style...maybe slightly Victorian?

There is no doubt that the food is good or that the store is well stocked, however it is all very expensive, children are regarded as lepers by the staff despite there being a lot of merchandise aimed at them, and the staff were very 'cool' with us in this and a previous visit (in marked contrast to our experience throughout Devon). If you have a lot of disposable income and kids who sit quietly colouring in you will probably enjoy it here.

There is a little cafe inside, I have not tried it but looks nice. Always pop in after visiting Otter Nurseries which is pretty much opposite so a good day out can be had doing the 2 venues.

This little store is opposite the much larger Otter Nurseries (where the food is cheaper and the service faster, but the atmosphere is not far off a Butlins Breakfast Room!), and has a little restaurant at the back.We have used it several times for lunch and coffee, but to be honest, probably won't be using it again. The service is often terribly slow (last time our two coffees took over 40 mins to arrive), and it is not really good value for money: we just liked its (slightly quirky) atmosphere. The shop is well worth a visit however: an eclectic mix of various goods from metal goods and scented candles to frozen goodies!
