Jose's Tapas Restaurant in Wakefield

Was looking forward to coming here again, as we visited a few years back. But went with a large party 15 of us same as last visit, it was £30 per head, the food was ok, squid was good but everything else average. I had 1 piece of cheese, a slice of chorizo, a potato, a small peice of chicken, had bone in it, a meatball, slice of bread and a spoon of rice and squid rings. There was not alot of food served and left hungry. Wasnt asked if we wanted to order anymore food.

Arguably Wakefields best restaurant. Jose cooks up some of the most authentic and delicious Tapas we've had, but that's just part of the "Jose's restaurant experience". It's not just the food that was exceptional. The service was first class, the atmosphere was superb and the feel of a Family run restaurant resonated through the whole place. Food wise, we had Tapas and ordered 5 plates along with some olives and bread which was plenty for 2 of us. The Chicken and Chorizo House Rice was a favorite, as well as the Chicken and Pork Skewers. We also had the Gambon Pil Pil, Chorizo and no Tapas is complete without Patatas Bravas. Everything was cooked to perfection and the plate sizes were generous too. For drinks we ordered a litre of Sangria (for the wife) and a bottle of Rioja Vega which I later found was Jose's tipple for the night too. The Sangria was homemade and delicious. The Rioja paired great with our Tapas. Completely content and full we were just finishing our drinks when Jose came out for a chat and was asking us about our food. We ending up talking for a good 30mins, Jose telling us about is background in the restaurant business and how he came to open his place 8 years ago. One thing that was abundantly clear was that after 50+ years in the industry, Jose's passion for food hasn't dwindled. He was showing us his first menu's from 20+ years ago, talking about which ingredients he prefers using and is clearly still turning out top quality dishes out of pure enjoyment and is not driven by the financial aspect. As much as I enjoy going out with my better half, we both agreed it was really nice and refreshing to just sit and chat and share a glass of wine with the chef at the end of our meal. This was our first time visiting. It won't be our last and I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. It is an absolute gem of a place. I wish more restaurants were run like Jose's.

Had a great evening at Jose’s, quick service and we were really well looked after by the two waitresses. Both owners who are husband and wife who cook the food were very welcoming and friendly, my partner is Spanish and she loved it as she felt like she was back home! Both of us left feeling very full. You do need to book. We will be back !

Wow ! The food is excellente !! The place was heaving and it’s simple decorations but you must book here as it’s booking only ?? We got lucky and enjoyed the food so much .Can be expensive but it’s what you pay if you want good food I presume so if you’re on a budget don’t come here .Jose actually comes out and talks to people ? Nice touch .Nearly lost a table due to confusion lol .

Amazing food! We were a party of around 20, and as there were so many of us, Sofia suggested a set meal for £25pp. Well, the food was excellent, piping hot and so flavoursome. We were served some of the nicest dishes of which quality I've not tasted since being in Málaga (Tapeo de Cervantes). The serving staff were so polite and efficient - apologies for the couple of people in our party who were not so polite😡 - which made the experience the need to come back. Sofia gave a bottle of fiz for our nephew and future bride, which was a lovely touch. On leaving I gave me appreciation to Sofia and her husband. If you're in Wakefield and looking for some great food and service, call in!

Another amazing meal at Jose’s, by far the best restaurant in Wakefield and the best tapas in Yorkshire. Service is always outstanding and always feel welcome, been going here for 8 years since they opened and it just gets better and better. Love it

Christmas Eve lunch, as usual the food was of the highest quality. Selection of delicious wines. This is truly one of the Merry cities hidden gems. Jose and Sophia are the most generous of hosts and never felt so welcomed in a restaurant. We had amazing and authentic Spanish tapas at José’s this week. I was catching up with friends and we got a warm welcome from the staff, lots of guidance on dishes to choose (house rice was a winner) and suggestions for what we might like based on our preferences. I can’t believe I’ve never been before but we will definitely go back. I have a teen who learned Spanish to a decent level and will love to chat to the native Spanish speakers in order to practice. What more could you want than an independently-owned and authentic restaurant with top quality food, a warm welcome and great service?!

6 of us celebrated a birthday yesterday at this lovely place. The food was excellent, as was the service from the lovely staff here.

I have passed Jose's many times, but this was my first visit, and it won't be my last. Such a warm and friendly restaurant, we felt like we were visiting family. We chose a selection of tapas, which arrived freshly cooked, tasty, and very moorish. Absolutely fabulous, the food was amazing and the service was lovely. Two of our group of 6 are Coeliac's and nothing was any trouble. The chef came out to our table to see if we had enjoyed our meal, which we had. Can't wait to go back.

This restaurant is like going to your best friend's house for dinner. It's family run and Jose is the main chef,, his wife the main waitress. Both of them like to come for a chat. Food is home cooked and very good. Choose from tapas or larger dishes. Their sangria is brilliant!!

Food delicious and very good portion sizes for price. WE didn't listed and ordered 1 too many dishes and could not fit in another mouthful. Wine lovely and decent price too. It's not the most romantic of places and the inside is quite basic in comparison to other restaurants but the food cannot be faulted. Thank you/ My only gripe was the slightly grumpy / sullen older lady who served us initially.

Stumbled across Jose’s whilst wandering looking for lunch. The best find in a long time, amazing place, chef very friendly, he came out and advised us on the menu with it being our first time. The lamb was phenomenal as was the goats cheese croquettes. Portion sizing were perfect for 2. Definitely will be returning.

Our family of 6 went for a birthday meal, we were not disappointed. The staff from when we entered the building were so welcoming and friendly. The food was outstanding, generous portions & delicious. We will definitely be back when they return off their holiday.

A well-priced, warm and welcoming family restaurant. We ate tapas dishes (5 shared between 2 people) and had drinks for roughly £30pp. The black pudding and ham croquettes were the favourites, although it was all delicious. Would definitely recommend. Booking is essential.

We had a fabulous meal at Jose’s to celebrate my Mother in Law’s special birthday. We were a group of 15, a mixture of adults and children and nothing was too much trouble. The paella and tapas were all delicious and the service was attentive and impeccable. Jose, his wife Sofia and the whole team really care about what they do and go out of their way to ensure that customers are happy and everything is just right. Such a wonderful family run restaurant. the staff were lovely and the food was amazing, one of our favourites in Wakefield. staff gave us recommendations, helped us decide whats best with what, if there was too much or too little. we got 8 plates for the 3 of us and had left overs but they gave us containers to take it home. could not fault at all!

When: May 2023 Greeting by owner: Very Poor Food: Below Average We have been to Jose’s (Wakefield) before but our last visit in May wasn’t good at all, I hope our findings below will help you if you are planning to go but more importantly, will help the owners too, as the whole experience was less than satisfactory. Arrival: we arrived in good time for our booking only to be greeted quite abruptly by Maria (the owner) who asked if we wanted a drink before sitting down, to which we declined. We stood for quite a while after being ushered into the bar area, and at one point she even thrusted a drinks menu at us, and again we said “No” and asked if we could be seated as we needed to eat. Once at our table we sat for about twenty minutes without being served. We noticed that most of her attention was with the bigger parties and we might as well have not been there, as we were clearly being ignored. Eventually, she came to our table but WITHOUT a menu = but yes, you’ve guessed it, she DID give us a drinks menu (yet again) and again we declined, as we were going off for drinks afterwards. Eventually, I asked for a food menu so we could at least order something (waiting time now 30m) We sat for a further twenty minutes after our order had been taken, then the food arrived: (Prices Approximate) Basket of bread (no complaints) fresh and crispy (£3.00) Potato Bravas (Overcooked – potatoes soft and a bit mushy) (£4.00) Gambas Pil-Pil (Prawns in garlic) (Overcooked – prawns hard – very expensive at £12.00) Pork & Chicken skewers (Excellent and good value at around £7.00) Our bill was £28 (quite expensive for what we had) and this was without a drink, we just had water. A final note is when we left, we always expect a Thank You and Good Night but not at Josey’s, I know they were busy but we felt really unwelcome and pushed aside, clearly tables who are spending money, seem to get the service and attentiveness, sorry Josey’s we won’t be coming back! Very disappointing experience! Raystr.
