Excellent freshly cooked fish and chips 😋

Definitely worlds apart compared to the old owners. Portion sizes are massive (given we’ve ordered large chips and large cod) still a lot. Highly recommended, fish is fluffy and melts beautifully. Side note : Lemon wedge 🍋 would be a great addition on top of the cod, as cod goes great with lemon. (We prepared our own lemon wedges for this) Overall : Great chips, seasoned well, great fish, worth a try !

I cannot stress this enough, but THESE CHIPS, ARE THE BEST CHOOS IVE EVER EATEN, SECOND TO NONE! I have literally been shaking at the table waiting for my parents to serve the chips, it is just excellent. If there indeed are gods, their names are the cooks in the jolly friar because they do some voodoo majic to make them taste so good it seems illegal.

Battered sausage had absolutely NO meat in it.. it was literally grey and pale! Fish was paper thin and minuscule. Gone down hill ..won’t use again

Used this shop for years. Last time 6 months ago not so good. Went in last night 13th aug 24. Absolutely awful. Fish was so small was lost under the chips. Chips were lovely. Ordered peas but didn't know they had mint in. Really poor value for money. Won't be using again.

20 min wait on two bags of chips (what we're cooked when I got there)

We've ordered here a few times, and they have been fine, but last night they weren't. When opening the fish, there was grease everywhere, and the oil clearly needed changing as it was dark brown in colour. Chips were ok, but the oil tainted the taste of the other items. Shame

Best fish and chips south of bursledon. By far. Don't go back to Ricks in Hamble. And Hamble lane are second best. Jolly Friar - above the rest!

Visited today, Saturday 6 April 2024. Lovely, helpful and friendly staff. Ordered small fish and chips. Oh my goodness, enough for two meals. Freshly cooked. Delicious. Recommend completely.

We love the fish and chips here. Chips are perfect combination of fluffy but with a bit of crunch. We've had several F&C dinners from here and have never been disappointed. I'd never liked mushy peas until I tried some from here!

Order online, arrived at my collection time and continued to wait a further 10 minutes. When I got home I realised they missed part of my order, have tried to ring several times but no answer, fish is dry and tasteless. Used to go here all the time but has really gone downhill

ordered a cod and chips but the fish given Definitely was not cod it was grey instead of white and didn't taste like cod at all. sausages and burger were all fatty and burger was swimming in ketchup so wasn't able to eat it. really disappointed this used to be a lovely chip shop but gone massively downhill now wont be ordering from them again.

Not used this place for a while but it is fantastic, had cod and chips and curry sauce was delicious all cooked perfectly, well done.

Now the BEST Chippy around since this place has changed ownership. The chips are delicious and the fish just melts in your mouth. The chips are twice fried! Boom! So good!! Sometimes the staff may come across a little snappy but its absolutely not their intention. A great asset to the village. Lovely people and lovey food!

Been coming here for years. Seen 3 ownership changes. I come a fair distance to get here, but sad to say the lovely chips and scampi are not what they once were. I won’t be making that journey again.

Battered savloy sausage and chips, not my favourite type of sausage. First time I've ever had my sausage wrapped in a separate bag, guess it didn't fit in the box. The box was wrapped im paper, I'm not sure all the wrapping was needed. Lovely to be able to watch the sun setting over the water, whilst sat on a bench.

Surprised from this fish and chips quality. Cods are firm and flaky, succulent, free of bones, not too oily and white in colour. Chips are crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and cooked right through. Friendly staff as well. Will definitely come back again👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

ordered online got home and one oap meal missing, no way of informing without going back down so didn't bother, food tasted oil like after every bite, service was the only good thing.

I have used this place in the past and always been fine not sure if it has changed owner, the chip had a funny taste and the sausage was a little over cooked didn't eat much but within an hour it went straight though me won't be returning again. Such a shame as its nice to have chips on the water front 😕

They were busy, its hot but I'm unsure this has relevance. The staff were blunt and unfriendly, the food ordered took quite some time and when we went to eat it found it inedible. The pea fritter was watery and the fish cake barely any different. This used to be a good chip shop but I would advise shopping around for a better meal.... it won't be hard to do.

Have always brought from here, but when it initially changed hands I thought it went down hill...... few weeks ago thought we'd give it another chance and glad we did. So much better, massively improved.

Arrived at 5pm opening time joined the q finally got order at 5.40pm seems like deliveries take priority! Small cod is small spend the extra as we must have got the mino buttered sausage and fish cake all good but I think lid fell of salt pot ! And vinegar must have dried up but good quality and tasty food.

Lovely fish, chips very good, shame it’s a minimum spend of 5£ on card as I paid for my food then realised I forgot the curry sauce, so had to go with out.

I am literally disgusted and extremely disappointed this evening. My order was placed via phone, on collection I was told there was no cod ,Why was I not advised when placing my order that there was no cod as I would have chosen something else? I fully appreciate that chicken takes time to cook, hence I ordered earlier. The service was terrible, I was told that they had called me to advise no fish, in a fish and chip shop on a Friday night! No call received. To add insult to injury I was also asked on the phone if I wanted to pay for a carrier bag. I said no, newspaper was fine but was told no, we don't do that anymore ! Seriously fish and chips have always been packed up in newspaper. Having used the JF for years we are extremely disappointed and have now reordered our fish and chips from our local pub, no issue at all and its delicious. We do our best to support our local businesses in the village but this is unacceptable on many levels. A response would be appreciated.

This place used to be great. Been using for 20+years. They've changed their menu and system in last 6 -12 months that has taken them from five stars to one. Whoever decided to remove over the phone card payments should be sacked. Reducing scampi from 12-10 is shrinkflation. Chips have gone from adequately feeding a family by themselves to pallid disappointment. I've given it several tries to see if it is teething issues but it is consistently bad. Gone from weekly order to not trying again until 12 months pass. Get your act together!

Very poor service, will not be using this place again, Run by kids that have no idea, arguing and shouting in front of customers, waiting forever for food, such a let down as this place used to be the Place to go for great fresh fast food Good Bye Joliy Frie 😢r

Ordered 2 Savaloy and chips and walked up the road to eat only to find my Savaloy freezing cold and uncooked in the middle. Got back and was confronted by a stroppy teenage girl,asking me how long have you had it despite having just served it to me minutes before,I declined having it reheated and she didn’t want to offer any alternative, terrible customer service and attitude,given she had previously been shouting rudely at the guy cooking the food infront of a shop full of customers. Update now have food poisoning so will be reporting them.

Great food, well cooked and very quick service for fresh food. It's worth ordering in before hand and be warned they get very busy. Fish is always bigger than the norm and really tasty. Customer service is good although I do feel they could be more customer focused and engaging at times. But that doesn't change the over all experience here. Really good menu and a large selection to choose from. Highly recommend

I have ordered from the shop before and they have always taken card payments over the phone and we have always had a very good service and standard of food, I was told that they cannot take orders over the phone and to go through just eat. No major problem and I did just that this however was a bad decision, The order was placed at 7pm and after calling to see where it was after an hour I was told it’s on its way, the food arrived literally at 2048 tonight and it was virtually stone cold. Very disappointed as to why they won’t take card payment direct over the phone and wouldn’t recommend to anyone as it was cold and greasy .

Nice food & quick service,a little expensive tho .need more kids deals or offer smaller options to make cheaper,the drinks are too expensive but a handy spot just a walk away from park / sea x

Chips were cooked nice enough, as for the salt and vinegar question im not sure why they bother asking as after replying yes please plenty, they arrived with next to nothing and it ruined the whole thing.

Beat chips I have had around here. Not my usual chip shop as I don't live near it, but a impromptu lunch stop was needed. The chips were lovely, proper chip shop ones 😋, staff friendly and the shop was welcoming.

The food was fine, the portions were reasonable, the wait time was short. They are using non-plastic packaging which is a plus for me. The great thing about this chip shop is the location - lovely seaside walks and places to sit and eat.

Virtually uneatable fish... Dried out and hardly any fish in the batter... Tasted like it had sat there for hours. No way could I identify this fish as cod. Lukewarm chips. A complete rip off. Had to throw it in the bin.

1st time using this Chippy. I can honestly say it's the best around. The staff were friendly and in immaculate clean uniforms. Shop very clean. Food amazing. No greasy chips of batter on fish. Ill be there every Friday from now on ❤

We had a celebration wkend at Vicky Park for mums 80th birthday, we chose the jolly Friar for our supper there were 28 of us ,I pre-ordered our food, we had great service ,when collecting the food it was all hot, fish was delicious, as I has 6 lge bags ,young lady helped me to the car , fantastic thankyou so much

Really tasty chips. Sausage ok. Nice curry sauce.

Over a year since ate here. Had pulled pork wrap, Mac and cheese bites and loaded chips. All the food was nice, well cooked and full of flavour. The loaded chips where loaded, large amount of cheese crispy bacon and lot of sliced jalapenos.

Ordered fish and chips and burgers for delivery for 9 of us to Bell Tent Glamping. Food was really good and hot Delivery was at the expected time and to the tent not just the site entrance.

The best fish and chips I have found in the local area. On a nice day, it's a short walk to the nearby park where it's nice to sit by the river and eat what you've just bought. Highly recommended.

Excellent food and absoloutly fantastic delivery service. The drivers there are really first class operaters. Social distancing maintained at door and lightning fast speed from our usual delivery guy who rocks a pony tail. 😁

We’ve just had a delivery (for first time) from Jolly Friar, AMAZING!!! We used to live close to JF so never used delivery. Now living further away & CV-19 forced us to get delivery. Words fail me as to how fabulous they are. Food is & always has been amazing! Price vary reasonable. Delivery on perfect time & with good social distancing. (I actually wish I could have given bigger tip! Last minute decision & not leaving house meant I couldn’t on this occasion. Next time I’ll be ready). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I’ll not get chips etc from anywhere else from now on & will be using again very soon! Thank you, to you for keep on going to feed us through this hard time.

We use this mainly in the summer but they are very consistent in good quality food. Friendly staff and lively curry sauce. Surprised to see bad reviews as we have used them for a number of years

Love this fish and chip shop is it one of the best I have tried in the southampton area. The chips are really nice and the food is great. The service is quick and the delivery is also speedy.

Great chip shop, friendly staff and home delivery if needed. I recommend the Jolly Friar, why not buy your food and chill out in Hound Park whilst tucking in to your great food.

The worst fish and chips I've ever had. Chips were old, hard, greasy and tasted foul, the large cod was about the size of a fish finger under the dried out overcooked batter.

The oil the fish and chips were cooked in was old, fish was all batter, chips were over cooked.

We first used this shop in the early eighties and remember when the queue was outside in the street but there has been a gradual decline in quality of late Today’s fish and chips were the worst I’ve ever had anywhere We will definitely never buy food there again What a shame that a once thriving business has gone so wrong
