Grudging ‘ we’re about to close’ kind of welcome. Sticky table. Dense scones. I can’t imagine we’ll come back soon. Cowes Week deserves better. Why does it close so early. Can’t count the number of people turned away.

Lovely breakfast, the staff are welcoming and friendly and offered a table straight away. It gets busy so booking is a good idea. We had breakfast and I of course went for full English and my partner had a bacon roll which arrived with hair. This was very quickly sorted and staff were apologetic about this.

We were a little concerned at some of the reviews, but found Jolliffes to be a lovely place to eat. The ambience is unique and quirky and we had a well situated table upstairs by the window. There were 4 of us in our party and we all enjoyed our steaks and rack of lamb cooked on the rocks. It was nice to have something different for a change. The staff were attentive and friendly and service was prompt. I would to be happy to go again and am happy to recommend Jolliffes.

Booked in advance with the price is Wight. Our table for 2 was upstairs next to the window looking out onto the Main Street. You cook your own food on a hot stone at your table . We had surf & turf it was really good & of course cooked to perfection by me. Fillet steak prawns & scollops a side salad & really good chunky chips . Helped down by a glass of Malbec . Very good

I have been going here for the best breakfast for many years and recently new owners have taken over. I wished last weekend. I wish the new owners all the luck in the world but when you buy a business you are also buying the good will. This place was well know for the best bacon, the best sausage and the best hash browns and plenty on it included in the price. So why ow why do new owners insist on changing things. 1) Smoked bacon - not everyone likes smoked bacon. 2) No hash browns and even worse they added sweet potato wedges included with each breakfast. WHAT is that all about. Arty Farty Nonsense on a full English breakfast 3) massive reduction in the breakfast size. To say I was devastated was an understatement. I am really sad to say will not be going again.

Enjoyed a delicious breakfast here. The server was very good and welcoming. The ambience is nice and the building has lots of character and history, used to be a shoe shop apparently! Overall very nice would recommend.

New owners have brought in a really excellent evening meal offer. Two people can dine in with three courses and a bottle of wine for £55. Or you can choose from a well thought out al a carte menus. All the dishes are home made, well prepared and are very generous portions. We chose the set menu and weren’t disappointed. We sat upstairs overlooking the street below, surrounded by the building’s beautiful heritage. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Great service and equally good food from an excellent kitchen. Jolliffes is a quirky place , particularly upstairs. Up the very narrow steps the first floor displays a history of ....shoes . we assumed, that at sometime in the past this was a high end shoe emporium. Fascinating stuff to match great food,

What a pleasure to go to a Grade II listed building and have a breakfast that is such good value for money - and served by staff who obviously like working there. Two of us went in yesterday as soon as the doors opened at 9:00am and we both had the "Quicker" breakfast. It seems the only difference between this and the standard breakfast was that it did not include mushrooms - but did include two fried eggs, two sausages and 4 big rashers of beautifully cooked bacon (that is, they weren't frazzled). This all came with 4 pieces of toast each, butter and marmalade. So we had a great start to the day.

Lovely place. All I wanted was a coffee for myself and a hot chocolate for my young nephew. The hot chocolate that came was like dirty water. When I told the proprietor, he said "Oh, it was the end of the packet." He replaced it with a better one - but still very low quality. Why risk serving a customer with the end of the packet? In a beautiful café like this, a hot chocolate should be of the highest quality, served with skill and panache...and one should be offered whipped cream etc. Frankly my coffee was only just drinkable too. I wish we had gone somewhere else and also that the proprietor had shown some degree of concern.

Nice coffee, need to keep butter out of the fridge if you want customers to be able to spread on the scone though.

Being a local I did not stay at the hotel but I thought I'd try the food as eating out in Newport is limited to say the least (unless you like pizza/pasta, there are at least 4 of these). I fancied traditional pub food which today is a scarce as all the pubs seem to be in the Gordon Ramsey mode, posh food, very little of it and expensive. The Wheatsheaf’s menu included real pub classics including Steak and Ale pie, Pork Belly, Steak and Chips, Lamb Shank to name a few. For starter’s I opted for the chilli prawns, a generous portion, cooked perfect and presented shell off which saves all that peeling and messy fingers! Starters are all priced at £5.00. I followed this with a perfectly cooked 8oz sirloin steak (med-rare) with lovely crispy chips and a blue cheese sauce accompanied by a nice crisp fresh salad, (which was not just a bowl of leaves like in most places). Although the chips were frozen they were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, perfect, I almost mistook them for the latest fad (3 times cooked chips). The chef must have a trick up his sleeve. The steak was cooked perfect. A field mushroom would have been a nice touch. Here's the good bit, all main dishes are only £10, if you fancy steak you do pay a £4.00 supplement which is fair. Even though I was stuffed I could not resist the homemade Rhubarb Crumble with cream. I managed to eat ¾ of it. Again, all the desserts were priced at £5.00. All I can say is although this pub has had a bad reputation for food in the past this is certainly not the case now, it’s really worth giving it a try.
