Met up with Family from a distance away ... We arrived later than planned but were welcomed with a friendly staff. The table was ready and it was a very comfortable area . We were served with drinks on arrival and chose from menu with a good variety of meals to choose from with a selection of special menu very reasonably priced for 3 courses choices of 3 different previously selected meals for each course. The food was exceptionally well presented and well cooked our family all enjoyed the meal and the service x Thank you to John O'Gaunt for making it special for us .. we hope to call again. from the North of Buckinghamshire.

Nice garden and a small selection of lunchtime food at sensible prices and the quality not too bad. Badly let down by the price of the beer which is nothing less than extortionate. The second most expensive pint I’ve ever had. Will not be going back.

We visited here as part of a day on the canal with another couple. It feels like a traditional pub at first, but then when you look properly is really grotty, the toilets are run down and dirty, radiator rusty and filthy, everything is just scruffy and grubby. It needs a really good clean and refresh. The staff couldnt perforn simple tasks and when she made a mistake said the rude F word which really shocked us. It needs good management. The saving grace is wonderful food, really tasty and really well cooked. I dont think id return unless I could see an improvement in basic hygiene.

Mum's 78th birthday and dad over 80. First time seeing them again in over a year of lockdown. John O'Gaunt managed to get a great outdoors atmosphere, safe space, friendly and caring staff, and a great versatile menu appealing to all. It offers reasonable value, considering demand and supply, and considering the menu and portion size. Patio heaters, blankets and hot water bottles if required. We had to move seats twice, as mum found the wooden bench seats too low as she uses sticks for her poorly knees. Dad finds noise painful with his hearing aids. And yet the staff patiently reseated us, and were understanding and kind. Even the manager, showing the stress when his junior staff had gone off shift, managed a smile and accommodated another seating change.A younger member of staff brought out mum's birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday solo (I'm sorry we didn't join in - we were enjoying your singing too much to spoil it!), and a special thankyou for doing that. A doggie bag for dad's remaining sausage: the dog says woof thankyou! Bathrooms clean and felt safe. All in all, safe, accommodating, tasty food, caring kind helpful staff, with parking.Final thought, please consider changing your credit card payment system as I wasn't able to leave a tip on the card. Unreservedly recommend.

Went for lunch in September and had a really lovely time, our return trip didn’t quite live up to that.Unfortunately there seemed to be a few noisy children in this time which meant everyone else tried to talk over the din which completely killed the atmosphere. We ordered a bottle of red which was completely chilled, no doubt fresh from the cellar but it did mean it lacked flavour, as it never properly warmed up.My husband had the roast beef which the time before had been quite a generous few slices, this time it was a little more measly. Nothing wrong with the taste, but just an inconsistency we felt. That said the beef cheeks I had were excellent and we both enjoyed our terrine starters.

Took my 93 year old uncle for lunch there on August 21st. The service and food were as great as ever. However I was amazed and concerned re the lack of COVID precautions. The tables were placed barely 2 metres apart so that customers and waiting staff had to pass within one meter or less of customers. Our table was adjacent to the entrance/exit/toilets so that we were frequently passed by people not wearing masks The menus were on paper and being shared around the restaurant (not laminated or cleaned in any way ) The waiting staff wore no masks . It was like being in a world without COVID - nice but worrying. As I have eaten out in a couple of restos in London and in the Cambs countryside I was expecting a lot more care re COVID eg better spacing of tables and people (our table should not have existed) , no shared menus, staff wearing masks . It felt as though the place was out to make as much money as possible at the cost of customer safety

Had lunch today (Friday). It was really busy, but the service was good none the less. The food is tasty and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Our biggest gripe is being charged £6.50 for a pint of orange juice and lemonade! When we questioned it, we were made to feel as though we shouldn’t and “the price is the price”. Only after making a real fuss about it, did they acknowledge that it was unreasonable and they charged us 1/2 price. Would I recommend?Yes; but check your bill properly before paying.

In these days of lockdown it is good to see a pub which takes social distancing seriously. Everyone was in the garden, nicely spaced out and safe. The outdoor Tiki bar was great and unlike many places they actually have a drinks menu. It amazes me just how many pubs that don't allow you to go to the bar don't think of something as simple as a bar menu. Food was really really tasty and portions were maybe even a bit too large. The bar and waiting staff were very friendly which really did add to the overall enjoyable experience. If I were a local of Hungerford then this really would be a regular of mine.

We chose this pub for its geographical position, not realising what a great place it would turn out to be. We were a party of 6, ranging from age 74 to age 11. Each of us could find lots to like on the interesting menu, which is a blend of old favourites like fish and chips and more adventurous offerings. The service was efficient and friendly: the food was great quality. Extensive choice of beers available, including Leffe blond on keg. The pub is obviously popular, as on a wet Tuesday in February it was pretty full. We had two dogs with us and they were allowed anywhere in the pub. We can’t find anything to criticise and we’ll certainly be back !

Lovely pub which we went to twice. Lovely fire, great drinks including craft ales and lovely staff. Food, I wanted to love it cause I love the pub but had fish and chips and the batter wasn’t good; parts were crispy (tiny parts) but mostly wet batter where I could taste the flour still. Maybe I should have said something at the time but we had spent a good couple of hours in there and I was hungry and didn’t want to wait for it to be cooked again so ate the fish within. I’d 100% go again for drinks but paying £16 for a meh fish & chips I think not. (I live in a London I’m not being tight)

With a colleague leaving, the 8 of decided to come here for spot of lunch, staff were very friendly and professional, we all ordered items from the flatbread/ sandwich menu, there was a good choice in both areas, these dishes were served with chips, a smallish portion and a small side salad, I went for the falafel, spinach and hummus with melted mozzarella, and it was nice, perhaps a bit more filling, I only really got the cheese flavour, disappointingly as the combination looked nice, this was £8.25, most of these were between £8 & £9 each, I would say probably a little overpriced in terms of value but an Ok lunch, most people thought the same.

We called ahead once our original plans had failed and the staff moved some tables around to accommodate us and called us back to inform us our table was ready. We were greeted professionally and shown to our table. The staff were so attentive and could not do enough to ensure we had everything we needed, were extremely polite and took the time to guide us through the menu, give recommendations and even the chef came out to introduce himself and personally answer a question about a dish from a member of our party.

As we do periodically, had dinner earlier in this warm and friendly pub. As is always the case, the staff are naturally outgoing, accomodating and attentive. The usual fantastic array of Gins and continually changing fine ales are on offer. We started with the pitta bread shared starter and the dips were amazing. My good lady had the falafel burger for main, which she said was excellent and I had the steak pie. Unlike some steak pies I'v had in the past, where you search out the piece of steak under one of the smallest peas, this our was full of steak chunks and along with the fresh veg and chips was delicious. Yet again, another high end experience in every aspect at this great pub.

Arrived at 2pm on a weekday. Very quiet but chef was behind the bar and assured us it wasn't a problem to order. He insisted on keeping my credit card behind the bar as we wanted to eat outside and he was fed up with people walking off without paying; l refused, for safety, to leave my card with him so had to pay as soon as we had made the order. Our starter was not up to standard expected for the price and my main meal was inedible. The sea bass was presented on a plate sitting in a pool of clarified butter and the food was over salted with crystals of salt. As it was my sons birthday l did not walk I to the bar with the plate of food so l left it. No one came to check if the meal, was alright, obviously not, l had paid! When the waitress came to clear the table l told her it was sitting in too much butter and far too salty. I was not impressed with her just saying she would pass it on. I will not be eating there again.

Fresh cornish roped moules and then roast pork. Flavours of the local produce, the al dent vegetables, the crispy but soft roast potatoes, the crackling and gravy. We stopped here on the off chance for a Sunday roast. Everything was cooked fresh. Roast potatoes were 10/10. Lamb was cooked to perfection. Had sticky toffee pudding which was to die for. Will definitely be back

Looking for somewhere to meet friends taking a break on journey to Devon and was very pleasantly surprised. We all had fish and chips and thought it was very good - nice crisp batter, good chips and generous portions. The shared sticky toffee pudding was also great. The staff were friendly and attentive and the garden was lovely. Will re-visit!

We visited today when the M4 was in total chaos. We were looking for a pub where we could grab a light bite to eat. We both opted for the flatbreads which were great. My husband had the meatball one and I had the bacon and Brie. They came served with chips and a dressed side salad. Service was great, as was the atmosphere. Loved the napkins - really good quality. My only criticism is the bacon didn’t have its fat removed, nor was it rendered, so I had to pick my flatbread apart and remove all the fat but this is my preference, hence why I have still given 5 stars.

Having been held up by traffic stopped earlier than usual on our journey. We were glad we did, lovely old pub, warm reception, good service, beer & importantly food. Just had lunch, grilled Lebanese flatbread, chicken with avocado, tomato, mozzarella & pesto, whilst my wife had the Stilton, cranberry & rocket sandwich. Both came with a lovely portion of chips, really tasty meal. Range of draught beer. Service efficient yet friendly. Aim to stop by again when we are next travelling through Hungerford.

I met up with a friend for lunch, busy pub, but we found a table. Very attentive staff and friendly. Quite dark in decor, but it is a very old building, there is a small garden area where you can sit.

Last night in the area we decided on eating out. We chose fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce. The fish was fresh, the batter crispy and the chips delicious. The highlight was the tartare sauce which was amazing. Well done!!

Fantastic food with unbelievably good service - ridiculous gin menu and Trappiste beers. The plaice and venison were delicious and our waitress Georgia went above and beyond to make our stay special. Cosy and dog-filled traditional pub by the river, all you could want from your Hungerford adventure

Good food, in Hungerford generally, tatty and dirty toilets unfortunately! A struggle to use. Shame as the rest is great

We were in town unexpectedly one day and drove along the road looking for somewhere to pull in. We are glad we pulled in here. We had some delicious flatbreads and chips for lunch with a nice selection of ciders and beers. Service was prompt and friendly! Will drop in next time we are in Hungerford!

Staff as always are well trained and friendly, a great place for an easy going Sunday lunch. Roast Pork with all the trimmings followed by homemade treacle tart hit the spot for me. If you fancy an aperitif you can't go wrong with a pub that has 75 plus gins to choose from and six real ales too.

Stopped in Hungerford on drive down south after a weekend in Somerset. Found John O gaunt after looking for a lunch stop . Friendly staff . Great for Gin lovers and the food ( steak and kidney pie ) was excellent. And to be able to sit in the sunshine in the garden on a February day was a perfect way to spend my birthday after a perfect weekend away . Would definitely visit again if in area .
