I used to frequent this lovely coffee shop in the 1970s, but it is probably older than this. The coffee is still excelent.

We often visit Johanns for a Saturday afternoon pit stop. Delicious scones and cakes, and generous portions. The tea and coffee are served with a smile. Cannot fault this cafe. Have been visiting for years, it's a tradition, lovely!

My daughter & I had lunch here. The choice of sandwiches wasn't that good and we both had cheese savoury. The bread was very dry and the crusts so hard we had to leave them. At £4.25 (I think) each, it was a lot to pay for 2 very dry slices of bread and some filling. I wanted to say something at the time but couldn't catch the staff who never came near our table, even after we'd finished eating. It was not a great experience, we'll not be going back.

Situated in Fenwicks an upmarket department store and apparently a north-east institution. Stopped for tea and cake. The place seemed largely populated by a cetain type of lady that lunched. Service was quick once seated though you had to wait to be seated but at least once seated your table was clean and tidied up. The place was packed out but the service was decetly quick and the scones were large and fluffy inside and the tea nice. At £10 something for two scones and tea it was about average value wise, whilst the cafe itself was stuck in an odd corner of the store with no views. Nonetheless as a break from shopping a nice place to take a break.

I came with my mam for a coffee and cake. Really impressed. Located in Fenwicks it's not the biggest but definitely a nice place to come to avoid shopping. I had a filter coffee which was very nice. My mam had a latte and a delicious fruit meringue. I'll definitely return again.

We (two of us) had afternoon tea at Johann's in September of this year. This cafe has been a Fenwicks fixture going back years and years. It was a quiet day and there were plenty of available tables. Staff were a bit on the distracted side talking to one another so there was no particular warm welcome. You order at the counter and staff bring your order to the table. Service was prompt. The choice of cakes etc was very unimaginative and I don't think has changed in many years. The scones are over-sized, heavy and dry. The quality of the tea was fine. The decor is looking very past it and although the cafe has always catered for an older customer, that shouldn't mean that it stays rooted in an out of date past. We found the atmosphere rather lack lustre and a bit depressing.

I have always visited Johanns from a young age, and as I have grown older I have began to appreciate the calm, temporary haven that it provides from a busy day shopping in central Newcastle. I visited last week with my Mum and Dad, on bank holiday Monday when Northumberland Street was bustling with shoppers out to get a bargain, and as always Johanns provided an excellent break. Upon arrival we noticed that we were about an hour and a half early for afternoon tea, and we were quite disheartened as my Mother had her heart set on having afternoon tea. However the lovely young gentleman who served us said that he would be quite happy to prepare the afternoon tea for us despite us arriving before the desk gates serving time. We enjoyed our food, and I felt that the portion sizes are perfect with regards to afternoon tea. We got three sandwiches, of our choice, and we chose salmon and chicken. Along with a fruit scone, choice of jam and clotted cream (these scones are to die for!!!!). Also got a caramel shortbread, miniature strawberry tart, and miniature peach Melba. Which as always were delicious and went down a treat with our cups of tea. I live in Northumberland and have been known to make a trip to Johanns just to have a peach Melba!!! Honestly, if you ever visit you must try one! To me, no visit to Johanns is complete without a peach Melba. The amazing customer service provided by the young gentleman making it especially for us, early, was furthered by the young woman who prepared our drinks. Both my mother and I had a pot of tea, and we ordered my dad a latte. She was so thoughtful, and didn't prepare the latte until he arrived as to make sure it was hot for him to drink. ( as he arrived later than us). All in all an amazing experience, thank you Johanns!!

The nicest aspect of tucked-away Johann's is the table service. If I wanted to serve myself I'd go to M&S, but Johann's policy is a little classier. A range of teas and coffees are on offer, with plenty to choose from in the cakes and scones. Service today was prompt and polite, bill paying was quick and efficient, so no complaints at all.

The first time I visited here, the dishwasher seemed to have broken down. To be fair, this was causing some disruption to service, but I would have expected the staff to inform customers of what was happening. The second time I visited, the facilities all appeared intact but the service wasn't much better. The overall impression from the staff was, 'This job would be OK if it wasn't for the customers.' Won't be returning.

Incluso a las 6 de la noche, este es el lugar, justo en el corazón de la tienda de Fenwick - para un café caliente y sabroso, un gran trozo de pastel o un delicioso bollo de queso. Personal amable, cómodos asientos, además de un segundo café gratis

Decorated in a 1980's colour palette of pastel pink & blue with grey/silver accents, this hidden gem attracts an older crowd, a much older crowd - the youngest face was in his late forties and the place was chock-full! Wach table has a vase with three fresh colour-co-ordinated blooms. Rather twee & sweet. %)One waits to be seated by the waitress who immediately takes one's order, which is delivered to table with speedy if somewhat perfunctory service. The coffee is good to very good from a taste, quality and value perspective.

Johann's is more than likely one of those cafe's that you didn't know existed. The fact that it is still there is testament to the excellent customer service and good coffee/tea, cakes and light bites that it serves. The cafe itself is located on the first floor of Fenwick's, Newcastle and unless you knew that it was there you would pass it by. But you really shouldn't for good quality food, excellent service with a smile and a price that is pocket friendly you should give it a try.

I have been going to Johann's in the Fenwick store for well nigh forty years and it is always a pleasure. This recent visit was no exception - open sandwiches to savour, cheese scones, amazing cakes, free refills of top rate coffee, all in a delightful cosy restaurant, away from the bustle of city-centre shopping. Great at any time of day, but best for elevensies or lunch

About 40 years ago Fenwick’s department store on Northumberland Street, opened three restaurants which caused great excitement at the time. They were all considered very posh and ground-breaking and me and my friends thought we were ever so adventurous and continental by choosing to eat in any one of them. The first was Johann’s a continental cafe/patisserie with beautiful pastries and savouries; next to it was the Majorca which also served fresh sandwiches, jacket potatoes, soups and light snacks while the Tivoli restaurant offered gourmet food and a spectacular view of Grey’s monument at the top of Grey Street. Carrying on a family tradition, I took my daughter to Johann's for a coffee, catch up and a chance to scoff some Danish pastries. Some things never change - and Johann's is no exception but sadly, I fear, not for the good. The ground-breaking menu which introduced the concept of the open sandwich to Newcastle had barely changed. It looked old and stale and while some places like Rules in London revel in their traditional menus as does Simpsonson-the-Strand, I'm afraid Johann's has lost its buzz. Daughter looked around very under impressed and had asked to go to Cafe 21 which is also in Fenwick. In fact there are now 10 eateries across five floors in the store with lots of choice. The staff were pleasant enough and the food arrived in double quick time but there was none of the buzz that used to accompany a visit to Johann's. I can't put my finger on it but the fact it hasn't even registered with other TripAdvisor visitors speaks volumes. I had a prawn sandwich and green tea, neither of which inspired me. This is probably one of the biggest disappointments for me. In its heyday Johann's would have been king of the hipsters but now it is just a pale imitation of what it used to be. My daughter, aged 22, is studying at university in Newcastle and wasn't even aware of its existence. How times change. Put Johann's out of its misery - time to call last orders and move on. RIP.

Not bad for what you’d expect from Tesco cafe. Decent enough but the cooked breakfast was quite cold.
