Nice Hippy Goth vibe and style but the pastries a few weeks out of date and up-sold coffee all the taste of Mellow Birds. A place to show off middle class neck tattoos.

Friday night Burger night . Cold fries, waited 10 minuites for replacment then we were served with hot on the outside cold on the inside fries. Very disappointed as the menu was just burger and fries amazed as to how the chef got it so wrong.

We came here as we were staying in the rooms above. Very quiet when we were there for early evening drinks. The on draught Moretti was good and the unusual cocktails kept our ladies alert. Prices fair enough. Suggested they are going to have live music though, perhaps lack of custom related, there was no sign of it. Surprised that any questions relating to the accommodation were met with a “separate business” response despite fact owners are the same. Small cafe/bar with around 10 tables.

I went here for breakfast with my family just before we went home after a beautiful weekend in Whitby. We were welcomed in by a lovely gentleman and got sat down straight away. The breakfast menu had quite a few options ranging from £5-15. We went for a large hot chocolate which was £3.75 which I thought was rather over priced for an average hot chocolate but no complaints overall. For our main I decided to go with some sort of concoction of a full English mashed up in a bowl with a poached egg on top. The presentation was questionable but tasted decent. However, the people who were with me had poached egg and avocado on sourdough and this looked and tasted beautiful!! The kids had pancakes and Nutella and these were lovely and a perfect portion size as sometimes kids sizes can be extremely small and this was perfect to fill the kids up for the day. Everything was clean and the service was really good, everyone in there was smiley and welcoming which made the experience really pleasant. The food wait was around 20 minutes leaving enough time to have a drink and a chat before eating. Overall a lovely place to go and I enjoyed it very much.

We stayed two nights in a room above and the cafe/bar was amazing. Probably the best brunch choices I've seen on any menu and what we ate was prepared to perfection. We tried the breakfast hash which is really hearty and the acompaning bloody mary sauce was delicious. We also tried the rerebit and the avocado on sourdough and can highly reccomend all three. It also had a lovely evening atmosphere for drinks before heading out.

Lovely place and staff were friendly but not what we expected. Ordered full breakfasts expecting the standard bacon, sausage, egg, beans and so on. Oh no!! It was breakfast ingredients diced in a bowl mainly consisting of potato’s . Bloody Mary sauce on the side ( in case it wasn’t weird enough! Found a lovely place the following day ‘Lush’ on Silver Street. It was MINT! Great food and good price.

I spent quite a bit of time in this interesting cafe-bar on my most recent visit to Whitby, and rather liked it. The decor is quirky, without being pretentious or affected, and it manages to be both well-spaced, and cosy, at the same time. I loved the wee booklets, and made sure to pay for one (though I seem to have mislaid it!). I first visited for the launch of the Thursday night hot-dogs and burgers, which include a couple of vegan options. It was the first night, and there were definitely some teething troubles, which might have been lessened by a management presence. The kitchen staff were pretty much learning as they went along, with ingredients coming straight from the fridge. This made for a very cold burger, which I initially worried was uncooked. The burger was small, as were the meat burgers, and the accompanying fries were not cooked properly, and were inedible. Pretty poor value at the price, (£12.50 I think), but hopefully these teething problems will be sorted out by now. The real star, in my opinion, was the excellent Bloody Mary Sauce. You're missing a trick not bottling this stuff! I had a couple of bottles of Whitby Whaler with the burger, and enjoyed it very much. Like many places, I found the coffee varied depending on who made it, a slightly older lady made me an excellent cup. Otherwise, it was poor. Not as bad as the tea though, which was terrible. You can't just fill a glass jug with boiling water, and throw in one solitary tea-bag! Not in Yorkshire! The staff were generally very good, helpful, and friendly, but there was one waitress, working a Saturday morning shift, who was absolutely useless. Things improved when she decided to go home. I had the St Hilda's Veggie Hash on this occasion, and it wasn't bad. At £10, it'd benefit from the addition of a couple of slices of sourdough toast, and being cooked a little better. Bloody Mary Sauce was a welcome addition. Closing times seemed a little quirky, and a few times, I called by only to find the cafe closed. I do think it needs more 'hands on' management, but really shows promise, which is why I have rated Jet Black Jewel so highly. I'd certainly consider staying here too.

wandered into here while looking for a nice cafe in whitby, so glad i came in. i had the sourdough toast with avocado and poached egg and it was gorgeous. staff were so lovely, food was perfect. i took some salted caramel brownies to go and they were lush too. also, being able to read old stories and tales about whitby in the little books on the tables was a cool touch. the cafe really captures the old, charming, quirky feel of whitby that i think most other newer venues forget about. would deffo reccomend, and hoping to come back soon to try the cocktails!

Gorgeous place to come to and is always on our list as a ' must go to'when we are in Filey. Beautiful setting and everything here is really delicious. The lemon meringue tart and coffee cake are to die for. It's lovely sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine. Sadly it was raining today and as we have a dog we couldn't go in, there was some seating under a canopy for the ice creams but sadly for us just a bit too chilly to sit out. It is cash only so that is something to always remember when visiting.

This pub/restaurant is under new ownership but the food and the drinks are still of exceptional quality. We visited at lunchtime (midweek), we had reserved our table in advance (this is advisable) and we were met with a very warm welcome. The menu has changed but still offers a good selection. The quality of the food was very good and the presentation appealing. Always a must when we visit this area. Good luck going forward, this place remains a firm favourite with us
