Jempson's in Hastings

Great old style cafe/bakery foods good and at a decent price also got some tasty treats to bring home with us very yummy .Definitely recommend we always come here when in Hastings.

Sadly the cakes have gone downhill,think they must have been around for a few hours as they were hard and tasteless ,bit pricey as well,hot chocolate was nice though,staff are lovely

Standing in the middle of 'Memorial Square' there are three mobile coffee vans and three coffee shops out of the 4 corners. Two of the latter are UK chains, Jempsons is a local, which I always try and support. The trouble is the decor doesn't beckon and it looks small. Going inside, it's not only vast but the range is huge: fresh bread, hot rolls, cakes, sweets, sandwiches to go. And, the presentation is first class, matching the staff's friendliness. Shame that I went twice between 8 and 10 am and it was mostly empty. Inside and outside need a spruce.

Staff helpful and always bring my tray over as don't walk too well. One of few places with acessable bathroom as well. Variety of cakes, pasties etc, some meat, some veg. Just often have coffee and cake. Really hungry and will have veg curry pastiy too. Do no t do full meals as is cafe, nor resturant. Breads, rolls, jams, biscuits etc to take away. Good for pressies and to take home insead of a stick of rock!

we pop in here quite regular and enjoy a coffee which we find very good. The staff are always polite and cheerful. One can also buy their bread and cakes plus other good items to take home .

I happened to go to this café when I entered or saw that it had some nice and good sweet and salty food. I or ardinato an American coffee and a cappucino. When was I served or looked at American coffee and asked the bartender if this is American? he said yes and. well ladies and gentlemen the AMERICAN COFFEE REALLY SUCKED LOOKED DIRTY DISGUSTING ABOMINABLE HORRIBLE. I HAVE MADE A BAD DAY WITH THAT TASTE OF DIRTY AQUA. if you want to hold a busneis see to learn how to be a bartender

Sue & her team make me fill like an old friend when I visit. They always make me laugh & feel better even on days when I'm not happy. If jempsons could bottle what they have then they would make a mint. There skill & professionalism is what brings people back. Thanks to them I would not dream of using another coffee shop even when jempsons is busy. 10 out of 10 is not a high enough rating for them

Situated over looking the busy main shopping area it's a good place to watch the world go by. Plenty of outside seating. Service was quick and friendly and the food and drink of good quality and reasonably priced.

All my visits to the shop are a joy. Sue & staff make me welcome. If I go in feeling down & by the time I come out Sue & the staff have cheered me up & but a smile back on my face. There are several coffee shops & i would not think twice about going into any other shop than jempsons because of the service & friendship i get from the team

Had another great visit to the shop. Sue & her team are so friendly & happy they make me forget all the problems in the world. Thanks to them a visit to jempsons is better than any therapy as everybody leaves with a smile on there face & a bigger on if they already had one when they came in. I've been taken into other place by friends & did not fill as safe as Sue & her team make me fill with the covid-19.

I understand about Covid BUT 40 minute wait for a soya latte is ridiculous. Someone takes your order when you get in the door. You think they will process it but NO, after 30 minutes you get to the till, unhappy staff ask your order again, you pay, you then wait another ten minutes for it to be made!!! Terrible service, terrible process. They need a manager to oversee how slow they are and sort it out!

Unfriendly staff. They begrudge you the food. I had a bacon and sausage baguette and my son had a sausage one, it was burned to a crisp. They told us they have a no refund policy in place and gave us, reluctantly, their head office address to write to for a refund. The woman who served us with greying hair, just didnt want to help us. A nasty experience which we wont repeat.

How great it was to visit the shop again after the lockdown. Both Sue & Nikky were really friendly. The service was amazing. Even tho it's only takeaways I'm glad it's open again

We brought some doughnut from the shop. They are absolutely gorgeous. Filled with lovely jam. Well done guys.

I have a choice of coffee shops but visit jempsons because Sue & her team are so pfriendly. It's like visiting old friends everytime I visit & everytime I leave the shop I fill far happier than when I came in

We stayed in Hastings overnight and when you are gluten free it is hard to find places where you can get a gf bacon roll. Locals pointed us in the direction of Jempson's and although they do not do a gf bacon roll they have a great range of gf cake. Birthday cake breakfast was much enjoyed and so was the coffee. Lovely place to watch the world go by.

We popped in here for a cup of tea on a rainy day. I really liked the traditional feel and enjoyed reading the historical information. Nice to be in an independent cafe for a change which friendly staff that actually clear the tables!

I think this is a bakery as well as a cafe, so we were amazed at the wide range of cakes and pastries to have with our tea or coffee. The sataff were very helpful, and there was a good amount of space for sitting and chatting. We'll come again to try a different cake each time!!

We popped in to this branch of Jempson's for a cuppa, snack and somewhere to rest our weary legs. The choice of sweet cakes and savoury snacks is quite bewildering. Whilst queuing to place my order at the counter, I spied the cheesy lattice savoury pastries, a tantalising long thin donut packed full of cream and the last two, oversized cheese laden straws. All delicious. I washed this all down with a cafe latte. We found a reasonably sized table in an alcove by the counter and devoured our snacks. I'm so pleased that we chose this more traditional, long established bakery. Combined with a friendly, chirpy service you can't go wrong by coming here.

As always, the girls are lovely. The pasty was just warm and not up to the usual standard. The cheese toastie was ok. Tea was good, as always. Will definitely go back, just not it's usual standard this visit.

I visited the shop for my coffee because firstly Sue & the staff are so friendly & inviting. When there busy it never shows. They make every visit an enjoyable experience. I fill like I'm among friends & not just another customer.

Jempson is a local bakery producing artisan bread (at a sensible price) since 1935 and a large café – the bread is very good. Coffee was very nice, selection of newspapers available to borrow, friendly staff. So much better than the two coffee chains across the road and open from 7am.

The staff here are always friendly and helpful. Great choice of food and drinks, comfortable seating. Tea and coffee good. Love the pasties. The only downside is lack of dairy free cakes.

Coffe is not bad, plain croissants are perfect and lovely old atmosphere inside, good place to have a relaxing coffee.

A good selection of hot and cold food and cake. Flat white coffee could have done with another shot of coffee, but otherwise fine.

A quick coffee was what was needed so we headed in to Jempsons in the town centre.

Service was reasonable but the state of the cafe!! Filthy trays dotted around- the floor needs a hot soapy scrub, the whole place needs a deep clean - the chairs need replacing - I wasn’t comfortable eating here at all - it’s not normally this bad

They never let you down the food is delicious and their is plenty of room for large groups to meet up.

We stopped in here for a light lunch on the way to the beach. Not the best sandwich I’ve ever had, but It certainly filled a gap. A good selection of hot and cold food, but worth a second visit

Popped in on the weekend, my first ever visit to Hastings. I was quite excited to see a more local chain to sample and opted for the very much misnamed GF "Victoria sponge cake" I wasnt expecting it to be great being GF but there was almost zero Buttercream inside. Just jam on oversweet cake. The coffee in contrast was bitter. Like the machine was dirty. When I enquired if I could have cream I was just pointed in the direction of some UHT pots. The wi fi was good.

Awful service and rude, miserable staff. Another customer was queuing at the 'express checkout' but was ignored by staff so she walked out. Went across the road to costa coffee and had a much better experience. Will not be returning.

Visited with my wife and two children. Was as I would expect friendly welcoming staff...was clean and tidy ..food and drinks were nice. My only issue is pricing I feel that the price is a little on the high side. We got a breakfast baguette and breakfast bap...americano and large flat white and 2 flap jacks all came to £19...i think that is a little high and in my opinion not very good value for money...i would return but only for drinks and a cake no extra food

Very disappointed with my visit. There is only a price list up for the drinks and no menu visible. There a hot pie cabinet that held a selection of dried out sausage rolls so I opted for a bacon baguette.

A very friendly café chain. Could do with more outlets in other parts of the country. Staff are always kind and helpful.

We had a lovely lunch and the children enjoyed their doughnuts. The Seafood rolls were filling so struggled through the amazing coffee cake.

So glad we found this chain of coffee shops on our recent holiday. The cakes and coffee were very good, the loos were clean, and the prices were very reasonable. It was the perfect location to pass away half an hour whilst waiting for a bus, and would certainly visit again if in the area.

good clean shop staff helpfull nice selection cakes breads.pasries etc hot or cold food to takeaway do drinks they also do celebration cakes to order can sit outside watch the world go buy while you sit and relax with a cuppa tea and a cake or toastie sandwich ettc etc with friends or on your own.

Again with mummy friends so needed somewhere with space which this does, staff are always friendly and much quicker than costa or Nero. The only disappointment is the food and cakes are not as good. The carrot cake was ok but prefer costas and I had a bacon and cheese puff(greedy I know) which unfortunately was tasteless. Recommend 1066 most items are fresh that day or previous day and taste is much better.

Handy coffee shop across the road from the office! Ideal for an early morning cup of coffee before work starts, or a slice of gluten free cake and a pot of tea at lunch-time; they do get busy, but plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs. Staff always friendly, and prepared for a chat if not top hectic. Waiting in anticipation for the gluten free savouries to arrive!! Could sometimes do with an extra pair of hands for clearing tables, but otherwise no hassle. Am in here Monday to Friday, most weeks, sometimes twice a day! Always busy for take-aways as well.

We frequently eat here because it is fast and easy. The sandwiches are excellent, although the crusts are chewy. They have an interesting price plan... take away is a bit cheaper than eat in. A new idea I guess...

Lunch was nice in this café which has a basic interior. Staff is very friendly and although it’s self-service, staff offers help where needed. The price is good and it’s suited for families with children.

Been here so many times over the last 6 years when we visit and the standard is always consistent, the staff friendly and a model of efficiency.

Lovely cup of tea. Loads of cakes to choose from - unfortunately I made a bad choice with the coconut and mango cake 🙄. Clean and bright and good value.

I needed somewhere for a coffee and a scone, and this is the place!

I visit here weekly with family members but have noticed the cleanliness of the café has gone downhill in recent months. It doesn't look like it is cleaned regularly, especially upstairs. The floors and stairs are always filthy including under the sofas. This is first thing in the morning so there are no excuses. We bring our grandson with us but have to watch what he touches and can't let him get on the floor because it is so dirty. It is very unhygienic. !! The highchairs are dirty and there are often rings round the inside of the cups. The prices are quite high and the slices of gateau seem to increase in price every couple of months. ! The tea doesn't taste brilliant.

I come here regularly with friends and I always find the staff to be exceptionally helpful and friendly. It is reasonably priced compared to other big chain coffee shops nearby and there is a wide variety of cakes and light bites to eat. I would recommend the chocolate gateaux as a particularly indulgent and delicious treat!

Lovely to find a traditional cafe for having a coffee and a bun. Makes a change from the chains that have sprung up in every High Street in the country. The coffee was good and the belgian buns yummy.

But doesn't make it to "very good".. A very pleasant eateries, fresh food but a tad predictable and normal. Good quality and pleasant tasting. Good "treats" to buy and take home!

Somehow Jempsons has a negative atmosphere. It isn't a pleasant place to go and the food on offer is nothing special.

Positioned at the heart of Hastings, so ideal for shoppers wanting a snack or modest meal, Jempson's has a long reputation for its cafeteria and sweet and savoury bakery. A long counter of cakes, filled rolls, sandwiches, pies, savoury pastries, pasties, sausage rolls entice you the minute you enter; there's almost always a queue for them, but friendly service is quite quick, both for those wishing to buy to take away and those who want to take the weight of their legs with a (heated, on request, meat- or vegetarian pie or pasty), wide range of teas, coffee. It's basically self-service, but items requiring preparation are brought to the table for you. Also on sale are jams, chutneys, biscuits, etc. to take away, many in gift-wrappings/boxes or tins. A very lively (if occasionally a bit confusing) warm atmosphere. Several visits, not sure about the date.

This is by far my favourite place to stop off for a delicious hot chocolate on any day of the week. I there are 2 huge floors full of tables and seats. Wheel chair access is there for the taking. Loos are on both floors for customers. It's a family friendly bakery with amazing, helpful, smiling and happy staff. There are highchairs for use and view across the town center on the upper floor. I always love sitting by the window on the deep leather sofas.

I unfortunately attend here every week due to family members. The cakes are usually pricy and not that great, cups usually dirty, floors filthy. The staff I couldn't fault though.

Nice to sit outside when the weather is nice - a little suntrap where you sit and people- watch. A good place to relax for a coffee and a break from shopping.

We found this a little expensive for drinks, we had a toasted tea cake which was very thin and the tea was quite weak. It could have been a little cleaner and no one shut the toilet door which wasn't too good

In a prime location in the town, and apparently here for 70 years, Jempsons could be really good. But we found it a little wanting.

Came here for lunch and while the staff were very friendly and helpful the quality of the food and drink was very average. We wouldn't come here again.

I have always high rated Jempson's shop in Peasmarsh, so was delighted to see a cafe in Hastings, after a driving lesson with my son we decided to stop for something to eat before heading home. I so disappointed the place was dirty with cobwebs around the window and dirt and dead flies on the window sill. The decafe coffee I asked for was stale as if it had been sitting on heat for some time. Panini's were ok, staff were abrupt and rude. I cannot express how disappointed I was and will not be returning and do not recommend.

Never again will I visit a Jempsons, yet another price increase for the most awful tasting Luke warm tiny coffee, staff so unfriendly and slow, tables piled with washing up and no healthy option food, bye bye Jempsons !!!!

We came here as we have done many times over the last few warrant weren't disappointed. Staff were friendly and food is what one would expect of a small bakery business. Decent range of pastries and usual savouries and they leave you in peace to enjoy them at your leisure.

Came here years ago and was in kings road today, thought I'd pop in to get a sandwich.

This is a pleasant little restaurant in the centre of Hastings. Very welcoming and a nice atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Food was reasonably priced and they had a good selection. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Hastings.

It's a nice place to sit in for a tea but I think they are over priced for what they serve, I don't visit anymore unless a friend decides to.

A cold, wet, windy morning in Hastings & really fancied a warming Chai Latte. I stood at a junction that has a Cafe Nero, a Costa Coffee and a local, family run coffee/cake shop. Preferring to support a locally run business as opposed to a large chain, I headed to Jempson's.

Nothing to write home about as this is very much a what you see if what you get but equally, absolutely nothing wrong with the place, Food and drinks well priced, with a good selection of cakes, sandwiches etc. There is also a selection of Jams etc you may want to take home with you as a gift if you are in Hastings on holiday. My cream tea was good and I i have bought food at other branches (Rye) and found that branch equally good so no reason to believe the quality would be any different here.

Popped to Hastings today, from Eastbourne where we had been on a mini break. Wanted a cuppa and a cake, but not from a big chain. Jempson's looked just right. We were so disappointed, the slices of cake one lemon, one carrot were dreadful, dry like a kitchen sponge scourer, overly sweet but not tasty at all...quite honestly the worst cakes we have ever tried.

Very friendly coffee shop. The staff were very efficient. I bought breakfast there - the bacon bap was very good - and then I took my coffee and food to the beach, which was deserted at 9am!

This place suffers due to its position in a scene resembling a mad max movie.I talk of course of Hastings town centre on a sunny June day.The previous reviewer comparing it to a soup kitchen is spot on.

Avoid! First impressions showed a good selection of food, however when you sit down and look around I realised how dirty this place is. It really does need a damm good clean. I could see dirt everywhere. Then there are the customers that this cafe attracts, not very pleasant at all, will not go back ever again.

We arrived here at 4:50, an hour and ten minutes before it was scheduled to close, we were just there to wait for our train. We almost felt like we were in the wrong for ordering a soy latte, as the lady felt she needed to tell us that she had just cleaned the machine. We couldn't relax as they were mopping around us and sighing that we were still there - still at least 40 minutes before closing. We finally left at 5.45 and they practically shooed us out. I work in retail and I know how frustrating it is for people to arrive late, but I also know how valued customers are and that you NEVER show them that they are unwelcome. They didn't tell us at any point that they were closing soon at which point we would obviously have left. I really liked the story of the ownership and company on the wall, and the scones in my cream tea tasted lovely and fresh, however the service could have been worked upon. Don't visit this place within the last few hours of trade.

Just ok. Food not bad, little variety after bakery products ( tiny pies and sauaage rolls etc). Bit like a school canteen self-service.

While visiting Hastings we decided to look for a place for lunch which wasn't part of a national chain to support local business. That turns out to have been a mistake,

I frequently visit Jempsons in Hastings for lunch. It offers a wide variety of pastries, sandwiches and cakes and provides a large seating area. The staff are friendly and efficient. The cafe faces opposition from three nearby chain coffee shops, but manages to retain a loyal customer base, perhaps in part because of the owners' ethical standards.

We have visited Jempsons at three different locations i.e. Rye, Hastings and Bexhill and on each occasion have been extremely disappointed with the level of service, quality and price of food and overall cleanliness. On our last visit to the Hastings branch the young girl working there didn't seem able to make coffee or tea in a reasonable amount of time. When she did eventually get her act together I had to ask for milk and by the time we sat down to eat, the food and drinks were lukewarm. We will not be visiting Jempsons again as I would rather throw my money down the drain!!!!
