Quirky for sure but very friendly and very keen to please. The soup we had was delicious and having leaf tea was a treat. Scones on the table is a lovely idea but a cover would be better. Lovely chat with the proprietor and really good at engaging with our whole family.

I ignored my instincts not not go in but we wanted to shelter from the rain. Despite there being stools at a table by the window, we were instructed to sit at the one table in the shop, alongside another customer who was being talked at in a loud voice by the proprietor. Already regretting our decision, we politely ordered coffees and scones, which he picked up from the uncovered table display with his hands. The scones, although edible, were definitely not fresh, and the proprietor continued to shout as we ate. I made conversation with the lone man seated at the table, out of politeness but was constantly interrupted by the owner. A most surreal experience and not the Yorkshire welcome I neither expected, nor am used to. I am from Yorkshire so I know what to expect. Won’t be returning.

I'm pretty speechless and don't know where to start. So awful it was surreal. Food was poor quality. I mean really bad. (Cheese flavour was ok, but he didn't make it himself so it doesn't count. Could just as easily buy it from the market). Poorly made poorly presented. not sure what poor-quality food other reviewers eat to give it any higher rating. Anyway, what was worse is how he shouted at and abused other customers. He was ok to us, but made for an extremely uncomfortable atmosphere. Desperate to get out and never go back again.

What a strange, awful experience. My gut instinct was initially a ''no'' but we agreed to give this cafe a try given its high TripAdvisor rating. I have no idea how it's so well rated! It's small, appears unclean and unhygienic with lots of uncovered food and flies everywhere. The staff/owner was very abrupt and unwelcoming, and so bad I thought I was misinterpreting the situation. But I wasn't. His manner continued and he slammed down each cup/plate onto the table. We decided to avoid eating and only two of us had a drink. We left as soon as possible. So bad it was strange.... Please don't look at the headline TripAdvisor rating because it was the opposite of what we experienced.

Stumbled across this little gem last year when visiting Richmond and had to come back. Visited today with the wife and our 2 year old. Lovely, freshly cooked bacon butty and fresh cheese scone with a generous slab of cheese. Filter coffee only but on tap so no complaints from me! Our little man didn't get frowned upon when he jumped down from the table to do a couple of laps of it. If you want a frothy coffee with hazelnut syrup, served alongside a factory-made almond croissant then stick to Costa. If you want a warm, Yorkshire welcome and a good, straight up, home-made belly full then this is for you. We will definitely be back. Thanks Gary

Stumbled across theis little gem on lunchtime and so glad we did. It was frequented mostly by locals which is always a good sign. The owner was so friendly, talking to us about where to visit nearby and good walks etc. We felt like we were sat in his kitchen. We had spiced vegetable soup which was probably the best soup I've ever had. The tea if proper tea and the service is honest, enjoyable and with a side order of banter. A cracking find.

The guy that runs this cafe is just so rude, if you were to go in and not buy anything he wants to know why? Too the point he ran out of the shop to confront us and ask why we didn’t stay in his shop….imagine going into Curry’s just to look and the sales assistant running after you in the car park to ask why you never bought anything. We were in Richmond a few years ago and went to Jefferson’s for lunch. We loved the food and the charming, witty, brilliant owner. Fortunately for us, Jefferson’s is still in the market area. We had lunch there, bought a few things and enjoyed conversations with the owner. Sorry, I do not remember his name, only that he is an excellent conversationalist and excellent cook. We look forward to returning today to get a take away lunch, for sadly, our marvellous holiday is over. Back to beautiful Scotland. We highly recommend a visit to Jefferson’s. You can have any breakfast items in a sandwich or roll - all freshly cooked and accompanied by good coffee with generous refills. The owner was sat in an empty cafe eating his lunch, she was informed it was cash only ( clearly a highly frowned upon policy during Covid times) to which she politely said I only have card, and turned to leave, this was met with a response of ‘have a nice day, find some manners’ which was ironically the most hypocritical highlight of a dull Saturday! Shocking attitude from a jumped up pompous shopkeeper who quite frankly needs to review his outlook on life if he expects continue running a catering and hospitality business during these testing times. Our tenacity paid off, as we discovered Jeffersons. Gary was lovely to chat to, and the food was great - proper home-made bread pudding and a tea cake which was enormous. First visit to Richmond whilst on holiday in the area. We needed a place that welcomed dogs, ours is a small well behaved Jack Russell and this cosy place is recommended and did not disappoint. Excellent selection of home cooked food with great deli. Amazing selection of cheeses and goodies just right for treats or making up hamper gifts. We had a soup and quiche with salad. Generous portions so we shared a rather tasty fruit scone to follow. Tempting cake and meringues also on display. Very friendly welcome and service.

When I first came looking for somewhere to live in Richmond, I would sit in the window, with my dog at my feet underneath the sill, whilst rifling through Estate Agents particulars. Listening to the friendly banter between the owner and various regulars, as they sat at the communal table in the middle of this tiny space. The food is all freshly made, & delicious! It was actually back in July 2015, but the Calendar here doesn't go back that far. I send my guests there if they want lunch, & unless they are espresso freaks, they are never disappointed!

Whenever we are in Richmond which is more and more - we always pop in for a hand made scone and just right strength filter coffee - with free refill!! Lovely food and quality foods to buy. An informal atmosphere that allows dogs. Great view from front window up the square. The owner is a super character and will ensure your good and drink needs are well taken care of checking with you each time . Cooked in front of you breakfasts and lunch. Car parking in main square with parking disc mac stay 2 hours no return within one hour. Discs available free from local shops. Recommended without hesitation.

I popped in to get a parking disc on an early dark Saturday morning and was greated by lovely smells of coffee and baking, so promply eturned for coffee and crumpets.... simple pleasures! I dont know why the crumpets were so good, good salty butter or perhaps it was the atmosphere, free top ups on coffee and reasonable price. Lovely staff and helpful advice on were to park etc

I am now a regular. Spoilt for choice in the range of food. An engaging host in Gary creating a homely atmosphere where we and any other customers often engage in the topics of the day. Also, not least of all, quite reasonably priced.

We stopped by not sure what we wanted to eat for lunch and Gary jumped right in, we had wonderful home made soup, and a range of salads along with our tea. While we enjoyed our lunch, sitting at the window, we could watch the activity in the town square as well as enjoy the customers and neighbors dropping in to chat with the owners. Great fun, felt like family and had a yummy health lunch.

Visited Richmond for the first time while on holiday in nearby Swaledale. This place was a real find. Great food on offer and a friendly and helpful owner. We had the finest cheese scones ever. It is the only place I have ever been asked how I wanted my tea brewed (weak, medium or strong). I would recommend Jefferson's to anyone visiting Richmond who is interested in food or who wants a quality cafe experience.

First visit to Richmond ... First conversation was with the owner here ... Will steer well clear IF I ever return. What a rude man. He obviously has a problem with the neighbouring coffee shop but takes it out on the customers ... Me! All I did was walk in to his shop to ask if there was a toilet and all I got back was a string of abuse because I had sat in the neighbouring coffee shop. The two venues share a front door ... confusing to a 'newby' to Richmond! He was still hurling insults at me as I apologised and was walking out. He could have the best food and drink in North Yorkshire but rest assured I will not be eating or drinking here EVER (not that he would be bothered).

Mum and I dropped in for tea and scones here and it is a lovely café. The waitress who took our order was very friendly and I liked the fact that there was a lot of choice, it didn't cost the earth either! The scones were amazing and the choice very impressive. We will definitely be returning on our next trip up to Richmond!

As I have an eating problem following a recent operation finding suitable meals out can be a real problem. The owner was really helpful. When the chosen meal was still causing a problem he was quite prepared to blend it more smoothly for me. To top it off what I couldn't finish was packaged up for me to take home!!!

Went here for lunch today with the family. Wow. What a great place. The fella who owns it surely knows customer service. All home cooked food and he couldn't have been more accommodating to our two children. Great place and excellent value for money.

Richmond has a lot of cafes but we were struck by the quaintness of Jeffersons and the look of the generous scones during our wander around the market square. Scones tasted even better than they looked. Tea was great and coffee plentiful. We enjoyed the hospitality and humour of Gary and we will return next time we're back in Richmond.

Friendly atmosphere, great coffee, delicious homemade food - everything I have eaten here has been fantastic. Give the homemade soup a go, then buy some meringues to take home, so tasty. This little gem has fast become my favourite place to eat in Richmond and I now visit regularly.

Stopped by here for mid morning coffee, and tempted by the freshly made scones. Quite a small eating area, but not a problem, and the proprietor, a fine Yorkshireman, made us very welcome. Refilled our coffee mugs along the way. Sadly no Yorkshire curd tart, as he'd just returned from holiday, not had chance to bake any. Well worth a visit!

Compact interior, but warm and friendly. We sat in the window and enjoyed people-watching whilst eating delicious scones and crumpets. The big central table and friendly owner made for a lovely communal feel. It was also nice to see older customers there who were clearly regular and much loved customers. Much more than tea and cakes - a slice of real Yorkshire.

The cafe is in the market square near Barclay's Bank. Only small with one long table under the window and a large table in the middle, but Gary is very friendly. The homemade food very tasty, especially his soups. You get the biggest bowl of soup I have ever come across served with fresh crusty bread and butter. The butter is not packaged but in a small dish. His hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows is delicious.

We were just passing this deli when we were enticed in by the mention of warm soup with fresh bread. We popped our heads in and we were unsure if there was space. There is a long bar type table along the window, then one huge table in the middle, filled with freshly baked scones of all flavours. However, despite the communal seating arrangements, the owner welcomed us in to make it clear we could sit and just enjoy the surroundings. We ordered the soup and he advised us that it wouldn't be 'fast food'. Wasn't a problem at all as we were just enjoying the afternoon. We both ordered lentil soup, which was delicious and hearty, with 2 different types of fresh bread, which we could have topped up if required. The coffee was refillable too which is rare great value nowadays! The menu hosts a fine selection of teas, and the shelves around the deli are full of assorted delights. The owner may come across a little straight talking, perhaps a little blunt, but he was actually extremely friendly and took an interest in our day. He gave us some tips for different walks around the castle and the town, and shared a bit of knowledge about our own home town. He did make us feel at home.We also took away some sausage rolls.....wow! I'd make the 2 hour journey back just for those!! Certainly a place I'd return to when in Richmond!!
