My wife and I along with our son and his girlfriend and two children, plus dog, dined at the Angel just after New Year. The food as always was superb. The pie was excellent as were the chips. And the veg was steaming when it was brought out.Everyone enjoyed the meal and the beer as well as the cost, which was very reasonable. As my wife and I are local we think this is the best place to have a meal in the area

I have been meaning to write this review for a long time as we only live a few miles away and The Angel is our first choice when we want a good pub meal. The food is always fresh and really tasty, you always get big portions and the chips and veg are always really nice! If you are going for the first time I would definitely recommend the pie and the Sunday roast is great too. They are also dog friendly which is a great bonus!

When you walk in the decor is very old fashioned and could definitely do with some TLC.The menu is not large but very good prices and the food although basic is excellent and good portions sizes. So don't always judge a book by its cover

We were staying up the road in a caravan site and found the Angel Inn recommended by other caravanners. What a find! Absolutely top class food, staff were lovely and friendly locals.....what else could to ask for? We had tempura vegetables with garlic mayonnaise and pate to start, followed by pork medallions and chicken parmigiana, all absolutely delicious. Wine was lovely too! The greedy one (me!!) also had a pudding, sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, also just fabulous. Would highly recommend this pub. A limited menu, but what they do is top class!

We wanted a Sunday lunch so called ahead to make sure they did it and reserve a table. Unfortunately for us it fell below our expectations. My partner had the goats cheese mushrooms which were ok but not exactly main course sized and not very Sunday lunch and I had a aubergine dish in tomato sauce which was very bland. The veg wasn’t very Sunday lunch either although the potatoes dauphinois was very nice and the veg was nicely cooked. The meal was .... ok but it wasn’t what we wanted and it wasn’t particularly tasty. Mine certainly didn’t even taste seasoned. It’s a shame as it’s nice and local but we won’t be returning.

Four adults had a 3 course Sunday lunch. A diverse selection of starters (around 5) and a similarly wide selection of puddings (sticky toffee, banoffee etc.) were available. Main courses included Roast - chicken, beef, lamb or pork plus a vegetarian option and a pie option which was chicken, ham and leek. A wider choice of mail courses is available at other times. An excellent selection of well-cooked vegetables were provided. Our drinks included 2.5 pints of Timothy Taylors Landlord, a soft drink and a large glass of Rioja. Total bill £78.The quality of food was excellent as was the service. If anyone can tell me where I can get a better meal (and please don't mention the Raby Hunt) and better value for moneywithin 20 miles of here, please pm me through Trip Advisor.

Booked a table for lunch in the bar where we were welcome with our dog. Ordered the homemade steak pie on the recommendation of another customer and having been told it had not long come out of the oven. It was absolutely delicious! Perfect short pastry and packed with steak served with gorgeous gravy, the most delicious homemade chips I have had in a long time, and a good range of veg. (Yummy cauliflower cheese!) Also excellent value for money and very friendly staff. Great for home cooked food.

Staying at the caravan site at the top of the hill we’d read the reviews of this place so decided to try it. We walked down the hill which wasn’t as treacherous as walking back in the dark as it’s quite a busy, unlit, no footpath road. Despite this on arriving we received a warm welcome from the staff and customer sat at the bar. It was a typical country pub with log fire burning, very cosy. We ordered the food, steak and ale pie for my husband and rosemary chicken for me. Both meals were delicious and well presented. I couldn’t fault mine in anyway and my husband could have eaten his all over again. The locals were very friendly even with our dogs and I think my terrier took a fancy to the resident doggy as was whining after her.

After being let down at another establishment we decided to try the Angel Inn for lunch. The welcome was warm and friendly and the food good. My ciabatta roll with brie, bacon and cranberry sauce was packed with filling and came with a bowl of hot, homemade chips. My partner chose the steak, mushroom and onion ciabatta roll which arrived with a bowl of chips and some homemade onion rings.......which were delicious! All the food was reasonably priced, well cooked, tasty and well presented. I just wish I'd had room for dessert!! We will definitely be going back to the Angel Inn.

Staying at Brompton lakes we looked forward to Sunday lunch in Richmond ,the place we were to eat at was shut, but we were recommended Angel inn by the pet shop owner next door.We had never been before but what a warm welcome we received ,something sadly lacking these days.We had prawn cocktail and homemade pate followed by roast lamb and beef 2 courses cost £12.25 each .I am very proud of my Sunday roasts and very few we have out come up to scratch but today I met my match ,everything was just lovely ,hot and without doubt homemade, the leek and cheese bake and potato gratin both outstanding. We would have paid at least £18 a head at home for a meal inferior to this.We come to Yorkshire every year The Angel inn will be our new holiday local. My husband really enjoyed the Theakstons best thanks to all at the Angel.

The Angel at Gilling West is pretty much everything you would hope a Yorkshire village pub to be. For a start, you simply couldn't ask for a warmer reception.. Everyone, whether they're from near or far, is immediately made to feel welcome by landlord Debbie and her team of cheery bar staff.. And the hearty reception goes for your canine pal too - the cosy bar is dog friendly, so The Angel makes a great lunch stop if you and your pooch are enjoying one of the several pleasant walks in gently rolling Holmedale. There's also a lovely riverside beer garden if you fancy sitting outside.

Came here as we could not attract the attention of the staff in the first pub we came across in the village, The White Swan despite waiting at bar for ten mins. However it turned out The Angel was a lot more welcoming, despite being understaffed. Food was good, lots of veggie options, the beer garden was immaculate with a great view of the country and full of flower beds. The staff were busy but apologetic for the wait and were very cheerful friendly. Had good real ale. Would return next time we are on holiday.

Came here after spending five minutes standing unacknowledged at the bar of the superficially superior-looking White Swan, two minutes along the road. Barkeeper was welcoming and cheerful (in spite of being by herself due to staff illness). We sat out in the really very impressively well-tended garden, taking in the country views. The bar keeper continued helpful and was happy to serve us outside. Food was delicious, hot, fresh and well-cooked. Proper chips but not stodgy. Oh, and the prices were very reasonable, too.

We went to The Angel Inn today for lunch. Not a massive choice on the menu but between the four of us we had roast beef and steak and ale pie. We were brought a good selection of vegetables which were tasty and piping hot. For dessert, 2 of us had sticky toffee pudding and other 2 had white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. We had good sized portions and the bill was £49 for the 4 of us. A lovely local little pub with a pleasant garden too.

My mum treated myself, my daughter and niece to a meal here recently, a rare treat! Between us, we had the duck, cheeseburger and steak and ale pie. Unfortunately, the pie (two portions) was inedible as it was excessively bitter and too salty. I pointed this out to the waitress who said she’d ‘see what she could do’ and took both meals away. After a few minutes, she brought them both back and stated that the chef couldn’t do anything about it and would I like the pies back; I said no. No alternative was offered. We’d already paid for our food so I broached the subject of a refund with the barmaid who immediately refused. After a heated debate (on the barmaid’s behalf) during which the she became more and more aggressive and agitated, I repeatedly pointed out the fact that we hadn’t eaten anything and that an alternative was not offered, therefore a refund was the only possible solution. The chef then appeared and stated that if I didn’t like steak and ale pie I shouldn’t have ordered it! During this time, the barmaid had dragged a local in, who was eating his pie, from outside. I suspect this was to bolster her argument that ‘no one else had complained’. I found this unbelievable behaviour, not least because I grew up in the village and knew the guy really well, but also the completey unprofessional nature of the gesture. In the end, I did get my refund, £18, which was thrown across the bar at me, but only because I refused to back down and be intimidated. I’m sure this is a good place to eat most of the time as the reviews on here confirm, but for heavens sake, don’t dare to criticise the cooking and ask for your money back; go to The White Swan instead!

My first reaction was to leave as the small public bar was noisier than I would have liked but that would have meant that I would not have sampled their delightful evening menu in the adjoining dining area. We chose this pub as it was near to the caravan site where we were staying, we received a warm welcome and chose pie of the day which was minced steak and onion, not the steak pie we'd fancied but the disappointment only lasted until it arrived. Rich, delicious shortcrust pastry, generous filling and a jug of gravy each. The vegetables were plentiful and not over cooked, homemade chips completed a lovely, well cooked meal. This should have been enough but as it was a special occasion we decided to have a pudding, the cheesecake was excellent and the ice cream sundae was not as ordinary as it sounds, the ice creams were not cheap and basic, it was real strawberry ice cream with strawberry pieces, rich chocolate ice cream and vanilla beautifully presented.
