Good choice of sandwiches which were presented nicely with a sald. Quite busy on a Sunday afternoon so the wait was a little longer than we would have liked.

Well, I like this place, it does good cocktails, beers are nothing special. It's a shame this place will be closing, it's good on a night out to drop by in. I hope they open a new one in town, it'll give them a chance to give it a fresh look hopefully! although i'm actually a fan of the fancy decor, it sets it apart from the copy and paste bars throughout town.

Had a light lunch in here this week, the food was very good and the prices are very reasonable, however I would agree with another reviewer and say that the toilets were grubby with out of order taps and the whole place did have a dusty and feisty smell about it, I think it is popular at night with clubbers and so it did feel like I was having my lunch in a nightclub type of establishment.

From the outside, this venue gave the appearance of a typical trendy coffee shop. Upon entering we found it to be a grubby, empty pub. We instantly regretted walking in but felt too embarrassed to turn on a circle and walk out again. I ordered a pot of tea which was swiftly served but in a dirty tea pot and stained cups. Not to mention the poor quality tea. It's only a pot of tea, how hard is it to get wrong?

We have used the Ivory three times, the first time the food and service was excellent, but the next two it was dreadful. Cold bacon and done to death scrambled eggs. Looking for somewhere in Bury St Edmunds for a quick snack while shopping, we stumbled upon Ivory. What a lovely surprise. It was busy so we were offered a booth at the back of the main cafe. This was ideal as we could spread out and talk. Good service and good choice of foods. We just wanted a quick bite so went for jacket potatoes which turned out to be a good choice. Two of us had baked beans and one had cheese. All beautifully presented with a large salad on the plate and very tasty potatoes. Good choice of drinks, cocktails, mocktails, wines, beers the list goes on. Friendly staff too. Would certainly return.

A few weeks ago I was visiting some friends in Bury St Edmunds and I was having a wander around the streets and fancied a nice cup of tea and perhaps cake, if anywhere catered for Gluten Free, and I stumbled across Ivory Bar and thought it looked really nice and independent and to my surprise and delight they have some Gluten Free Cakes, but then i read the menu and I could have a Gluten Free Bacon Sandwich!! - I was beyond excited, I am also allergic to eggs and dairy, which can be a problem at some place, but not at Ivory, they were very knowledgeable and explained that it may taken a bit longer than usual as they would to deep clean an area of the kitchen and deep clean the grill and equipment to make sure there wasn't any cross contamination - it was well worth the wait, fresh and tasty! I will definitely going back when I visit friends again. Thank You.

Popped in on a Saturday lunchtime with my hubby and 2 children. Sat at one of the numerous empty tables and waited... And waited! Looked at the drinks menu, looked around at staff (who were totally trying to avoid eye contact) trying to find a food menu. NOTHING! We decided in an instant that if they really didn't care about customer service then they probably wouldn't care about much else. After a short debate on whether we should eat the tomato laying on the floor, we decided to leave! Sorry Ivory, we really won't give you another try.

I visited here with friends after a meal and drinks elsewhere. We all got cocktails. I must say I was completely underwhelmed. I had a Strawberry Daquari which did not taste like a daquari at all. It did not taste as though it had alcohol in it and just tasted like a very sweet artificial juice. Others in our party who had other cocktails said that theirs were not nice either. We left after the one drink. There seemed to be a lack of atmosphere in here too, despite them having a DJ. I was disappointed as I had been wanting to come here for cocktails for a while. I've been here on three occasions and I always enjoy myself. The bar is in a great location -- right in the downtown area and very close to shopping. It gets quite busy on the weekends, so be prepared to arrive around 8 if you want to be seated. I've never actually eaten here. However, I can say that if you order a martini here, they are poured heavy-handedly in the alcohol department and that sits well with me.

The girl who appeared to be in charge was resting on one of the sofas, we thought she was a customer at first. A young lad was waiting on the other 2 tables and seemed to be the only one working. The mirrors and chandoliers in the ladies toilets were thick with dust. 2 out of 4 loos had no lights and only one loo (with a working light) had toilet paper. We were completely ignored by the waitress and when 2 lots of people who came in after us got served we decided to leave. Will not be going back. This place is in need of a damned good bath, and seems confused as to what's it's purpose is: cafe and light food, or cocktail bar. I'm not sure it can be both, and the chintz of the chandeliers seem incongruous against the worn wooden flooring that looks as though it comes direct from a saloon in the Wild West. Moving towards the back room, it has a grubby appearance, and reminds me of a house where people have smoked fifty a day for decades; the tables and chairs were shabby in appearance - not in a chic way - and there is a 'dirty house' smell that is extremely unpleasant. On a plus note, the coffee is excellent

I stopped in for lunch today and found Ivory to be a pleasant place to eat, with art deco/ shabby chic decor and a quiet vibe. The tables had 1920s era posters affixed and the chandeliers gave character. The service was quick, and efficient. The food was fairly good, with average sized portions and a middling price. I had tomato soup, which was lumpy with pulp rather than creamy, but nonetheless pleasant. I also had a goat cheese wrap, which was tasty and had a very nice chutney on it,All in all an average-plus experience.

We just wanted a coffee, a piece of cake and somewhere to thaw our feet after a great but cold afternoon around the Christmas Fayre in Bury St Edmonds. We waited patiently for 5 long minutes, at the 'please wait to be seated' sign while several staff busily served seated customers and exchanged with other staff behind the bar, without giving us any eye contact or acknowledgement. There didn't appear to be a person in charge or taking ownership. As we sat down at dead on 5pm to order our hot drinks and cake, which were clearly still out on show and asking to be eaten and listed on the blackboards, we were told they were no longer serving cake as there was an evening 'changeover' We heard the waitress let down several other customers and wondered why the owner would want disappointed customers and why the owner would want to lose out on this money, as they then cleared away the cakes and took the blackboard down. While us ladies chatted for the next hour we didn't see the waitress again or get offered another coffee. How very strange indeed.

Although I've read mixed reviews of The Ivory, if you've visited in the past and been disappointed I would highly recommend giving it a second chance. It has recently undergone/is going through a refurbishment. The interior décor has been rejuvenated throughout the main and back rooms as well as the toilets undergoing refurbishment too. The menus have also been extended with a wider range of specials as well as a whole new drinks menu. The staff are extremely friendly and engaging and my visit here was extremely good. I've also visited often in the night time and the cocktail range and knowledge of the staff is certainly the best in Bury (and also the best value for money!). They also hire out the upstairs room for private party's which has its own private bar..when scouting around the other venues in Bury The Ivory was by far the best value for money and all the party's' are tailored specifically to suit your needs. I could not recommend this place more highly...so definitely worth a re-visit!

Had a range of food on the table from sandwiches to three bean chilli, but there was no wow factor. I had a chicken, brie and cranberry ciabatta with coleslaw and a small garnish, it was nice enough but perhaps a bit pricey for the quality, I don't think anyone commented on the food at all whilst we ate, it was just something to eat... We were spending a couple of hours in Bury and dropped in at Ivory for a simple quick lunch. The lady in charge was very welcoming, but there didn't seem to be enough staff and all the tables were stacked up with old food which took a while to clear. We ordered soup of the day, which was stilton and broccoli, but the waitress came back to say they had run out, but were now offering leek and potato, was that ok? When the soup arrived it was cold, and we sent it back. When it came back again we both remarked that it was completely tasteless - no stock in it, no seasoning. When we told the waitress she helpfully replied that some of their customers didn't like a lot of flavour, so that's the way they made it. Like other reviewers we also noticed that behind the chic facade everything was pretty grubby, paint peeling, patches of damp. Toilets were disgusting behind the sinks. We wont be going back.

Only informed once we'd ordered and had our drinks that they'd run out of sausages "you've got 2 between 4...", then when the food finally arrived it was cold. Their cocktails are of an extremely high standard and outshine a few high end bars I've visited in the past. A great atmosphere in an extremely good setting. I'll return here time and time again!

Having visited Ivory with friends on a night out, its daytime offering was perfectly acceptable. Their menu selection fitted the cafe-style that they were advertising. The decor, though, does feel quick dingy when it's not a particularly sunny day!

Our first and last visit to this place was when we ordered the home made lasagnia. It sounded good but after waiting an age for it to reach the table, it wasa dry, stoggy and tasteless baked up mess. The owner knew my wife and I were not happy but offered no apology and as we waited for the customery 'was everything ok'? it did not come. Very poor show.

Beautiful sunny day last week, my husband and I popped to Bury to do a spot of shopping and have some lunch. We came accross this lovely café. They had bi-fold windows to the front thrown open with the sun beaming in. Almost like lunch outside with the comforts of inside. Very continental feeling! This café wouldn't look out of place in Covent Garden. Very chic!!! The food was excellent and the service was second to none! Will DEFINITELY return!

Came with some friends at lunch time for our weekly get together don't know why we haven't come across this lovely place before. I had soup and half sandwich the soup was lovely and decorated like art! My friends also enjoyed their meals we then had cake and coffee also lovely. Served by a lovely young tattooed man, good service and food. Will be back!

Popped in for a couple of drinks before eating. The place was almost empty. The welcome was non existent, the staff seemed to have no interest, glasses were dirty, bottled drinks were warm. How this place remains open looking at the mixed reviews is quite a feat.I won't be going back.

Called here last week with a friend for lunch. I had the hog roast roll which was absolutely delicious! She had a chicken fajita Mexican wrap. Both meals were great value for money and the service was exceptional. The staff were extremely attentive and the surroundings are lovely. Will definitely eat here again!

Staff seem so disinterested. Couldn't raise a smile. The sight of someone bum crack while your eating is so off putting. Food was nice. Just a pity about the service.

Called last week. Few tables, not busy. Wife sat down, I went to the bar, was ignored while the two young staff were yapping to each other, waited 5 minutes, still ignored. Sat down and we waited and waited and waited. I said "can we get served" ..... Still ignored, two staff still chatting so after 20 minutes, we left. Not sure what is going on with this place, but obviously, it's losing money and those that own it have entirely lost interest so, give it up and put yourself and the few customers left out of mutual misery ...

Been here twice now when visiting Bury St Edmunds. Recomment their Cheese on Toast for lunch, absolutely superb, and nice coffee too. Service has been very good on both visits. Definately will be back.

After a busy morning shopping we decided to try the Ivory after hearing such good things about it. Unfortunately, we had to wait just under 40 minutes for two pretty mediocre Panini's to arrive. I would be slightly more understanding had it been busy, but only about half the tables were full. I will try it again - hopefully they were just having an off day...

My husband and went into Ivory between Christmas and New Year to warm up with a hot drink and something to eat……….Big mistake. After waiting for a while, a man came and took our order for 2 hot chocolates, glass of water and nachos. we waited 25 minutes for our drinks, as did the couple next to us. I used the toilet whilst there, and i have to say, they were freezing cold (no heating) and no hot water to wash hands with. Absolutely horrid, especially when it was so chilly outside. Whilst sitting waiting for our drinks, we watched the two guys serving and was quite horrified by their hygiene standards, or should i say, lack of. Bear in mind, they are serving/clearing tables, Carrying food out, touching clean cutlery, touching door handles as well as pulling up his loose trousers, oh and running his hands through his hair. This was all while preparing drinks and then, touching the mouth part of straws with his dirty hands, which the public are then inserting in their mouths…….YUCK!! Our food arrived right as our drinks did, minus the water. No apology, nothing. We swiftly drank and ate, then went to bar to pay. Neither guys asked if everything was ok so i proceeded to tell them we waited too long for drinks, their response…….oh sorry. No offer of taking 10% off bill or anything. Because of this appalling experience, we will not be returning, nor will i recommend to friends or family. Such a shame as when it first opened, it was great. How can the owner/manager let it go down hill, so much and where are their basic skills for cleanliness and hygiene??

After shopping round bury a drink and good was on the cards, a pretty looking bar/restutaunt from the outside was appalling from there on! Asked for a table the waitress's just pointed through to the back!! We waited for 15 minutes before I had to ask for a member of staff to take our orders as we had already asked at the bar if we have to go to the bar for drinks, the waiter then arrives with no drinks menu when asked he said there wasn't an alcoholic drinks menu - the girls wanted cocktails but he hadn't brought that with him either!! Eventually drinks were ordered 2 beers 3 cocktails this took them 15 minutes to bring them to the table the mojoito was weak and warm and the Virgin Mary hadn't even been stirred!! After 35 minutes to receive drinks we decided against am staying for food!! Awful choice friends and family will be told its a let down from start to finish

We popped in with friends whilst shopping in town. We were sat for 40 minutes before we were brought a drink. We had planned on eating, but did not want to risk the wait! The drinks were nice, but service was poor and drinks too expensive- 5 drinks cost 25 quid, would not go again.

We've been here a few times and always found the food to be good and the service likewise. Had to check that the reviews all referred to same place as some mixed comments but possibly due to visiting at different times of the day. We've only ever been here at lunchtimes and weekends so can't comment on evenings. Daytime in our view, great place for a nice, often different, lunch

This restaurant looks nice and advertises gluten free items and sushi, both hard to come by in Bury St Eds. I had a chicken salad and sun dried tomato sushi roll. The first very ordinary (a 5 year old could have put it together) and the second was inedible: Rice very underdone and flavours appalling, not improved by the heavy garlic in the soy. Dreadful really. As I only attempted one piece, the waiter was willing to remove charges from the bill but did not ask what was wrong with it or apologise. Presumably they will go on to serve others rock hard rice bits and horrid sauce. Strange to throw a few flat iceberg leaves in the bottom of a bowl, chop cold chicken on top with a few halved tomatoes and slices of cucumber and call that a salad while at the same time adding spices and garlic to soy, hugely overpowering. A better balance is needed between rudimentary cooking and failed gourmet. I will not go back to find out though.

Lunch for 2, my mediteranean salad came with wilted (some slimy) lettuce leaves, and old dried out cumcuber, the rest of it passable. Pointed out to waiter, but no response. Other guest chicken sandwich which was fine. Will not return,

One of those places where you feel the staff think they are doing you a favour by serving you. The young trendy staff, trousers half way down their bum can barely raise a grunt when spoken to. Shame really, as the sandwiches and cakes are really nice. Bury has a lot of coffee shops and I probably won't return to this one.

Recently moved to bury and have been a few times on Saturday evenings! It always has a great atmosphere and one of the best selections of cocktails I've seen! Not sure about the door staff comments below, I'd say they're some of the friendliest I've met, they even get the door for you which doesn't happen a lot any more. One negative is it can get very busy, but that's to be expected from a bar on Saturday nights I guess. Would recommend!

I only go here at lunchtimes, so I can't make any remarks about the evenings. But I always feel welcome, the food is lovely and not overwhelming, and the staff are charming. In the summer the windows are open onto the market and regardless of season it is a great people-watching place. Recommended.
