We have regularly visited for lunch. Today very very disappointed with our lunch. Ordered scampi. This was not scampi, not sure what it was looked like something spongy. We should have complained at once but both hungry. We had already waited nearly 30 minutes after ordering and had already enquired where are order was. As regular customers we know that service is always slow and haphazard. There never seems to be enough staff or organisation at the counter. Altogether a very disappointing experience.

Firstly Carvery was sold out at one o clock so had choose options from the menu. Chose a ciabatta and a bowl of soup instead. Sold of out ciabattas and was given a toasie instead for a total of £8. The server over charged me for a bowl of chips and £3 worth of bread. When the food arrived it was cold and a disappointing proportion. Would not recommend eating here unless you are happy with cold food and pathetic proportions.

Chose to go here due to it raining as we were meeting for a catch up and coffee. The first drinks we had to take back due to the cups were filthy. Replaced drinks no problem. We chatted and decided to have another drink as the weather was still foul. As I was due to go to work I thought I’d have a small carvery which used to be lovely. Turkey was nice but the beef was like shoe leather. Bought another couple of drinks again had to change the cups as they were dirty. The whole queuing system is dangerous as you are having to go back down the queue with hot drinks on a tray once served with very little room to manoeuvre. This used to be a go to cafe for a nice experience and good quality and quantity of food at a reasonable price. It’s expensive and dirty and portions are so small. Unless things improve I won’t be rushing back.

Visited as a family, one of our favourite places for plants & a cuppa & scones. Family member fancied something more substantial so opted for a scampi lite meal . I can't remember the exact price but it was over £9 for 6 chips and 5 pieces of scampi. Ridiculously overpriced and subsequently we wont be returning. The management need to address the issues and complaints rather than a bland reply on social media

Well the food portion sizes are going downhill. We ordered quiche - a piece half the size of what it used to be. Staff said the powers that be had told them to reduce the size. It's now half what it was 6 weeks ago. 2 inches wide at the most - see photo. And the price remains unchanged at £9-75 for quiche, chips and salad. Not good value. We'll not be having quiche again if that's their portion size

We ordered 2 plain jacket potatoes at £7.50 each, wowzer, asked for marg as cant eat butter. The spuds arrived, very small, microwaved, so chewy and worst of all, almost cold. As it was microwaved theres no excuse for them being cold. They didn't bring any marg but luckily we brought our own, just in case, however, because they were so cold it didn't melt in. To make matters worse we sat in a no dog area but people still came in with them and nothing was said by the staff that were delivering the food.. Certainly won't be back in the cafe again and wouldn't recommend.

Before ordering, we looked through the menu and the photo of the jacket potatoes looked very good, so we ordered 2 jacket potatoes, both with cheese & coleslaw and extra butter. Each plate came with 2 small potatoes, the size of a satsuma, they were microwaved, soggy skin, not a large crispy potato as advertised on the photo menu card. Also, only received one coleslaw and 2 pats of butter, with a garnish of salad which wasn’t fresh. We told the server who took the order immediately and he was ‘sorry’. In hindsight we should have asked for a refund and left.

Went for a carvery lunch today. Overcharged on the carvery and charged for a drink we didn’t have. Despite arriving at 12pm the Yorkshire Puddings were cold and the Roast potatoes were burnt. Ordered a small carvery and was basically given the scraps on the plate, barely any meat whatsoever. Also ordered a bowl of chips which consisted of barely any chips. Complained to the person who appeared to be in charge of the restaurant, who she was just plain rude! The restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday so dread to think what it would be like on a busy day. Will not be going again anytime soon.

Brought my mother for lunch today and was very disappointed. We haven’t been since last year due to my mother’s ill health. We waited for our lunch to have no trays and no plates. We proceeded to wait for 5 minutes. Got out lunch and found a table. Sat down went to get knifes and forks ? There wasn’t any. We waited 5 mins. The 10 mins. Then 15mins. We managed to get a fork each and waited for the knives. After asking more than 10 times to be told there in the washer will be out shortly. In the end we had to eat with just a fork. Very very disappointed as we’ve been several times as my mother loves her lunch. What a shame she didn’t enjoy her lunch and left half as it was cold. Will think again before going for Sunday lunch. Such a shame.

I came earlier this month with my family. Three of us ordered the jacket potato one with prawns and two with chicken tikka. We were all very disappointed. The jacket potatoes were hard l, dry and small. The chicken tikka was a cold filling and not much of it at all! The prawns must have been defrosted in the little pot they came in and the sauce on top, as the prawns were in the defrosted water. There wasnt much salad either. My daughter got a small carvery which was quite nice and the cakes looked lovely. We should have returned the jacket potatoes really, we were very disappointed.

When my breakfast came back to me it was swimming in oil and was unedible. Also the whole garden centre was freezing so it didnt encourage me to linger round the shop.

On the 28th December 2023, a friend and I returned from a racing trip. We decided to give Irton garden centre a go, both badly needing a breakfast. I ordered two large breakfasts, it contained 2 bacon, 2 sausage, 2 fried egg, 2 hash browns beans, mushrooms, tomato, and two toast, a pot of tea and a filter coffee. Sounds like many a breakfast, but this was thick dry cured bacon, glazed in a syrup, Cumberland sausages, hot beans, mushrooms cooked in butter not deep fried, perfect eggs and thick slices of bread, toasted perfectly. Best breakfast in Scarborough.

Booked Christmas Family dinner for family for my sons birthday two of us gluten free clearly stated on booking form. My son was ordering off the main menu . First they bought over our food I asked if we could have it when my sons was ready and told no it was already played up ! When my food was served I double checked it was gluten free and told it was by the chef then he came over removed it and told me it was not GF after all he then appeared with another plate and told me he had done his part Asked to speak to manager but he wasn’t available deputy manager came over and offered to refund the cost of my sons dinner ?! She asked if we’re staying or leaving despite already starting to feel ill I said we were staying. The deputy manager bought out my pudding I said that’s not got gluten in has it ? No she assured me only for me to be half way through eating it the deputy manager comes over and said sorry that has gluten in too !! Unacceptable on so many levels !! To mess it up once but twice even after me verbally checking and been assured the food was gluten free !! They did refund however Ive had to have medical advice as the stomach spasm has been so bad it’s caused damage and I’ll be poorly for a few weeks while it come out my system which will cover all Xmas. To top it off the girl behind the toll was rude to my mother in law and I emailed the actual manager and have had no response. Unprofessional management, incompetent staff, Unsafe food all in a absolutely terrible experience! Date of visit: December 2023

Was very disappointed as 5 of us had booked for the Christmas dinner (2of us gluten free ) . All the dinners served then half way through the chef came and told us not too eat them as they were not gluten free he redid the meal but was too late as half the meal he’d been eaten The same thing happened with the sweets only too have started them and then have them snatched back saying they were not gluten free . Our Daughter in law has since had a reaction to the gluten in the food . Which has made her poorly. We may take this matter further as on our booking form we had stated our allergy requests. The staff were full of apologies but was a bit late as a lot of the food had been eaten and was guaranteed to be gluten free. Completely ruined our family meal .

I’ve been to Irton Garden Centre many times for but not for 3 years or so. Lovely place. Good food, Good shopping, Good friendly staff however, I went there today with a friend just for coffee. We ordered and were handed our tea and coffee. I asked where the sugar and spoons were and was told, ‘over there on the station’. I went to the station and got the auger but the basket didn’t have any tea spoons. Neither did the next station. Two empty baskets of tea spoons. I went very politely to ask back at the ordering counter for two tea spoons. I was told that I had to use dessert spoons. I reacted with Really??? The lady said, ‘well we only have 10 tea spoons for the restaurant, so we don’t put them out! I was slightly irritated at this fact and I didn’t want to use a dessert spoon and asked if she could go and find two tea spoons. After a lot of banging around which we could hear from outside the kitchen, she appeared with two spoons and said I could only have 1. I said had a tea and a coffee and didn’t want to use 1 spoon for both drinks. She rolled her eyes and thrust the 2nd spoon at me which I took and joined my friend in the restaurant. This maybe might seem a bit of moan, but I do feel a restaurant of this standard should a, have more spoon and b, hold back on the attitude to a friendly and polite customer.

Have been many times to the garden centre as we live nearby, usually no problems. however today 1st. November at 14:34 we called for a coffee and scone. No problem with the order but it was not possible to find just 1 clean table, all were pilled up with used plates and other crockery. Customers, including ourselves had to clear a table and stack the used plates on an already full table. As said we, and all others had to clear a table and some even sat among the used crockery. The problem then was that none of the tables got cleaned. We stayed about 20 minutes and when we left not one of the tables had been cleared. I counted 14 table in this state on just one side of your restaurant. As customers we deserve better service than this. Poor job. Mr. M. Riley.

This is our second visit in a week. I find the pricing a bit strange if you miss the one sign on goods it’s confusing they don’t price individually. An example on way in spotted a lively salvia plant in a pot had to ask a member of staff who got on her radio for a price and was told nearer the entrance is one big sign which there was. Two lots of metal birds on spikes again no price but another area had them with just one sign on liked them once I knew the price and bought three. The plant area is well set out. Plenty of choice when wanting other items i e compost. Had the carvery lunch and the queue was very long with one lady making drinks, serving and taking the money, really need at least two. We had the carvery and it was o k. I went back to get my husband a pudding and a pot of tea and I asked for the special order of a piece of cake of the day and a tea, what I got was 1 tea 1 pudding 1 piece of cake and 1 cup and saucer, when I asked for another cup and saucer was told “I’ve rang it in wrong” she then proceeded to say she would give me a free tea. I was totally confused. Got to the till to pay for our goods and again confusion with prices and another member of staff called to sort it out. I like this place but everything takes so long it puts me off coming again. I also dislike the toilet set up of men and women using the same cubicles, had to look at three before use. Large car park.

Also, portion sizes have shrunk considerably? Feels like a rip off TBH. Deans garden centre is our next port of call I think? Shame

A review of two halves. The garden centre is well stocked with everything from fancy goods to accessories to plants.. The only problem is a lot of the items don't have prices on so it's a case of finding a staff member. Like a lot of garden centres nowadays Irton has become more of a department store instead of a garden centre. The cafe area is huge and that's not a problem if you have enough counter staff serving, but on our visit only one person was serving, taking the orders, and making the drinks. And sadly Irton has gone down the road that other garden centres have done. Close a small friendly cafe that has a small menu and home made cakes and make a huge cafe with no atmosphere and charge high prices.

We’ve just visited the gardeners retreat cafe in irton garden centre. I’d booked an afternoon tea for my hubby’s birthday. We live in Scarborough and visit the garden centre regularly as it’s really nice but never had an afternoon tea before. Wow! It was amazing. We each had a selection of sandwiches ( cheese, egg, salmon and ham) along with sausage rolls. This was followed by a selection of 3 delicious cakes/ pastries, a little sundae and a scone with cream and jam. You could choose tea or coffee to have alongside. Despite having nothing to eat beforehand we didn’t manage to eat it all but gave it a serious go. This was the best afternoon tea we’ve had in our area. Everything was fresh and tasty and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. We will definitely be booking another when family visit or for a special treat. Great value for money, especially if you have a family card as it’s discounted at this time. The service was brilliant too and we were able to sit in the dog friendly area so our pooch could come too. A really lovely treat.

Why didn't they have a board displaying that they had run out of meat. In addition the lady on the till was also serving meals, so was exhausted.Trolleys piled high with dirty food, only one poor lady clearing up, and generally disorganised., stock control non existent. They are obviously short staffed., and Sunday is the busiest days for roast dinners. As we are diabetic , and had to stand half an hour without meals, we were so dissapointed we left to go to a pub down the road and was served almost immediately. The meal was hot, the sausages, (2) were of excellent quality and the vegetables cooked just right. Would have loved another dollop of mashed potatoes but only because I love them. The young man that brought our meals, was very attentive and courteous and asked when we would like out a Cherry crumble and custard, which makes a change from being rushed, it was lovely.

Whilst shopping for fruit trees at Irton Garden Centre we decided to have lunch. There was a long queue and maybe more than one assistant serving would have helped speed things along. The food once ordered also took quite a while to arrive. Once the food did arrive it was rather plain and tasteless. The restaurant still uses condiments in plastic sachets which won't help to reduce plastic waste. On a positive note the dining area has a dog friendly section. The customer service in both the garden centre and restaurant is lacking and some staff training on how to serve paying customers might help. Although, the assistant who helped with choosing fruit trees was very helpful, maybe he should train the other staff upto his standard.

My friend ordered the ‘Marie Rose prawn sandwiches’ which came with lots of kale and cucumber and hardly any prawns (you had to search for them) not to mention no sauce, the sandwiches were dry and unappetising as well as the prawns smelling ‘fishy’ which put my friend off. I had the Classic beef burger, which looked really nice, the chips and salad was nice however I got half way through the burger and realised I was sort of forcing it down. The meat tasted strange and the whole thing was dry and I just wasn’t enjoying it. Both my friend and I agreed we were not returning here again for lunch. Much better cafes in the area. I think they might have changed kitchen staff as it used to be nice here.

Although it's a very busy place, it doesn't always necessarily mean it's good. The cappuccinos were very weak, plus I would have expected more homemade cakes at £4 for an undersized portion. I would put money on the scone being one of the ready filled frozen ones, cold, slightly hard and that funny tasting simulated cream. The lemon meringue also had a slight aftertaste that you get from chemically induced flavours. The cafe itself was quite chilly and a couple had a pair of sausage dogs on long leads..that they kept letting stray from the table..dont blame the dogs..blame the owners!

Visited a couple of weeks ago and a very disappointing experience. Firstly not one member of staff throughout the Garden Centre acknowledged us with a smile or a hello or even eye contact. This included the girl on the desk at the entrance to the centre. Not a good start! Also the whole place was very cold ,do they actually ever put the heating on? We decided to have a coffee so made our way to the large Coffee Shop where more than half the people in their were sat with their coats on! I asked for a soya latte only to be told they could only do me a black coffee but I could buy a carton of Alpro to put in it. Come on if you are going to have such a large Coffee Shop get your act together with a proper coffee machine! Altogether an experience not to be repeated.

We went on a Thursday, for a meal first. We were told there would be about a 20 minute wait which turned into a 40 minute wait. When food arrived it was missing bread and butter off my friends choice, mine and my daughters jacket potatoes were cold. Very disappointing. If they want to have a large restaurant then they should have a kitchen and staff that can cope with it and not have all the punters waiting between 20 - 40 minutes. Unlikely to go in restaurant again!

1.30 on Friday, saw mushroom pie with chips & peas on specials board. I enquired from (quite handsome ) young man if there was an alternative from peas. No I am sorry he said we do not have any other vegetables because we do not have carvery on today. I said that I didn't want carvery & had ordered the pie. No we do not have any other vegetables he replied. With a look of incredualty I asked what they served if a customer did not want peas, nothing was the reply !. Stunned I checked to see I was in the right department. After a short while he came & said chef would do some cauliflower &green; beans if I wished. Then a young lady asked if I wanted some new potatoes which converted something unwanted into a very enjoyable meal. I was well pleased with the care shown & will now make the venue a regular visit.

Ordered this and although the portion size and flavours were nice, the title does not reflect the main contents of the dish which, as it turned out, was sliced potatoes of a large quantity. This was served alongside chips adding to the already high content of potato. It was disappointing to discover very little broccoli and the dish was mainly made of cheese and potato. Also, it would have been nice if someone had approached us to ask if we were enjoying our meal. This would enhance your route to high quality service.

On first appearance everything looked nice apart from my peas were well over cooked but when I tasted the gammon it was soooo salty it was inedible. My husband and daughter said the burgers weren't great and the only thing that was ok were the chips £30.47 for 3 portions of chips was very pricy, we have been here several times, before it changed management and it was always lovely but we won't be visiting again after today I'm afraid.

The meals arrived promtly enough and the staff member was polite and effecient. From then on the experience became a negative one. Chips were the frozen type and oozing grease, the egg was undercooked and the beans luke warm. An expensive and not to be repeated visit. We did mention these faults to a member of staff but any enthusiasm to pursue the complaint was not there.

I went for Xmas Afternoon Tea with friends, it was pre booked and on the morning i rang to let them know that one of the party was allergic to Strawberries so could not have any on her food in any form, great we thought. When we went and the afternoon tea arrived i asked just to be on the safe side that the jam in the scones was not strawberries they said yes it is so i explained i had an allergy and that i had rung that morning to warn them, then i was told it was probably best not to eat the trifle as that had strawberries in, i wasnt offered any alternative although they did give me another scone but made me feel as though i was putting them out. When i said i had rung they said well they were told in the kitchen because they shouted it through but they must not of heard. It turned out as well as myself ringing one of the other ladies had as well so it should of been right. The sandwiches which were only turkey and beef were dry and one of mine was made out of crusts. A very poor afternoon tea wouldn't and couldn't advise anybody else to try it. And make sure if you have an allergy that they have listened when you told them!!

I had lunch at Irton Garden Centre yesterday. The prices are astronomical for what is a garden centre cafe. It is trying to be some sort of restaurant with prices to match. The BBQ chicken panini was very poor - pre bought sliced chicken in a very hard panini which was £6 without chips, which could be added for an extra £2 making the price ridiculous. The waiting staff were miserable and the man on the counter wanted to take money off customers as soon as he could then move you on. The majority of the cakes were not homemade and were expensive. Very basic and disappointing food for the price - I won't be visiting for food again. The Christmas decorations were however very good and the older lady on the till in the garden centre was charming.

I then asked if there was any bubblewrap for the breakable garden ornament and again was abruptly informed I did not need any bubblewrap. Silly me thinking I needed to protect a breakable item..she was most rude in her manner and having told my gran what a nice garden centre it is I left feeling very let down. The garden centre has recently introduced a new carvery on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays so decided to give it a try. Food was excellent with a plentyful supply of tender beef, pork or gammon to choose from. Yorkshire puds were fresh and not overcooked. Roasties good and a great variety of veg, all piping hot and cooked to perfection. Choice of large or small portion plates which was great for people with a smaller appetite and all excellent value. It was a rather warm day for a carvery so was not particularly busy but if it continues to maintain standards it should certainly do well and I shall be returning very soon. The area where the carvery is located does require some ventilation or air conditioning as it was (and is) like being in a greenhouse. I felt sorry for the chef.

The man who took our order was quite surly and could not manage a smile despite my best efforts. The panini had filling just in the centre part and even then not very much and the side salad was unimaginative, tiny and limp lettuce. The scone was very dry and tasted rather stale. We did enjoy the generous teapot full of tea and hot water to fill us up as we left most of our meal! It is such a shame as the garden centre has great disabled access and is a lovely area for lunch out but my husband says he won't go again as this is the third time recently we have visited and found the food and service to be poor.

We have patronised this cafe since it was the original garden centre before the new garden centre group bought it. It used to be great, friendly staff, tasty food at affordable prices. We feel we need to comment as it has become so bad we decided we won't be visiting it anymore. Firstly the staff, mainly unfriendly & abrupt with just a few of the original staff that are friendly. Secondly, the food, it is overpriced, badly cooked & poorly presented. Most of all it is not enjoyable. We find it very sad that what was once such a friendly cafe serving good affordable tasty food has declined into what it is today, despite the huge investment and improvement of the centre as a whole.

Two very small fish cakes three half tiny potatoes & what passed as salad. £7.95!!We then decided to look around the shop & took our purchases to the till. As mine was only for a small amount I decided to pay with coins. While I was searching for the money the woman on the counter kept rolling her eyes in obvious disgust. I mistakenly gave her the wrong coin to which she snapped I was wrong. Then my daughter was paying for hers & gave her £1 short to which she said "if there's one thing I've learnt it's how to count". Sharing your dining experience with our canine friends is not to be recommended, they could be left in the car with the window slightly open for the half hour you are eating and it would enrich your experience and those of others. The menu was diverse but just not exciting, but then I suppose you have to offset this against the cost, which I would describe as average.I was here with three others and we all ordered different meals. I am going to examine all four offerings. I ordered a baked potato, with mature cheddar cheese and a salad garnish. It was an instant disappointment when it arrived at the table for the following reasons: Firstly the potato was microwaved and not cooked in an oven. It had an insipid look about it, pale on the skin and the potato dry and unpalatable. It needed a lot of butter and cheese to make it edible. The cheese could have been melted into the potato under a grill but the cheese arrived in its own receptacle and straight from the fridge. The cheese was as described, mature cheddar, but the whole delivery of the baked potato was unimaginative and close to having been thrown on the plate. The salad garnish was no more than half a tomato and a few iceberg lettuce leaves. All of this for £5.50. I wish I'd had the soup! The second meal was a gammon steak with a pineapple ring, a pile of chips and peas. The first comment signalled that the peas were overcooked and possibly tinned. They were left on the side of the plate and only the gammon and chips eaten. The third meal was a special of the day; chicken and leek pie, chips and peas. Again the peas were left in a solitary pile, later to be scraped from the plate directly into the pea bin. The pie was rated successful, but the chips average. The fourth meal was Scampi, chips and peas with all the scampi being eaten (you can't really go wrong with frozen scampi) but many of the chips and all the peas being left once again.Needless to say this was not a memorable lunch, although perhaps memorable in a negative sense. If you like basic and uninspired food and a pile of chips with just about everything then you have come to the right place. Gardening is all about filling a gap, perhaps this can also be applied to the food.

We found a table near to a wood burner stove which was struggling to make an impression on the temperature. We ordered ,my wife choosing fish pie from the specials board whilst I opted for ham,egg and chips from the standard menu. The food arrived and I pointed out to the waitress that there appeared to be a large number of dogs amongst the diners and one of which was sitting on a table .''Terrible isnt it'' she replied. My ham and egg was ok but the chips were utterly tasteless and my wife's fish pie totally lacked seasoning. We then noticed that diners were using e-cigarettes so at this point we decided to leave. If you like sharing your meals with dogs and e-cigarettes this is the place to come but if you don't do like us and find an alternative eatery.
