As a couple, we had been highly recommended to try this place. When we arrived, luckily there was no queue and we found a seat straight away. We had been warned that it gets very busy, so to expect to have to wait. The server was extremely friendly and very attentive. Considering she was the only one greeting, taking orders and serving, she did an amazing job. We could not fault the service at all. I can't say that there was an atmosphere as such, but an enjoyable visit. We ordered a pie each, one with mash and one without. One with mushy peas, one with garden peas. When they came, they both had mushy peas. It was no issue to have the plate taken away and changed, immediately being brought back to us. However, we can't say we were overly enamoured with the pies, or the mash. The mash was flavourless. Could have done with a little bit of seasoning, and being more creamy. It was bland and tasted quite starchy and watery. The steak & ale pie was also very bland. It consisted of only steak, gravy and pastry. We would have thought there would have been some mushroom or onion, or both in with it. The sausage and black pudding pie, also very bland. There was just a wedge of sausage meat, with 3 tiny specks of black pudding in it. Considering the pies are made with locally sourced products, we felt they were almost like frozen pies that had been heated up. Although the review probably feels like it's all negative, that is not the point I am trying to make. Just a few hints for the business to maybe improve on. We are pleased we have finally managed to visit. And would go again in the future.

A charming little spot that truly lives up to its name. The pie was excellent—rich, flavorful, and perfectly baked. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the mushy peas, not usually my go-to! The atmosphere was something special—like stepping into a time machine. Quaint, cozy, and full of character.

Not what it's cracked up to be, food was ok but I just can't see what all the fuss is about the pies don't taste any better than what you get at shop. But what really let's this place down Is the chaotic service and not listening to what you are ordering which leads to your orders being wrong. If you want to try it here do so but I bet you won't be returning in a hurry

I absolutely loved Humble Pie n Mash. The food, although simple and limited choice, was delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The real attraction for me was the decor. They have fully embraced the history of the building and everything in there is pre 1950s. It felt like visiting my grandparents. Can't wait to go again

My husband and I had the the most wonderful meal here. We both had the slow braised steak and stout pie, mash and peas. The pastry was amazing and the large chunks of steak and gravy were out of this world. The staff were very friendly and welcomed us and our dog, The room itself is quite small but that adds to the feel of the place and was very relaxed. There were lots of old, interesting artifacts around the room. The music was more wartime which was in keeping with the feel of the place and really nice to listen too. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. 5 star all the way!!!

This place is an absolute smash. I loved the vegan meal, the service and atmosphere were awesome. It's in an ancient building which has been a bakery for something like 400 years. Recommended by a friend this place did not disappoint. We went for a late lunch on a Sunday and managed to get 5 of us seated quite promptly. The menu is not overloaded with choice - nice and simple pie & mash. About 7 different pies to choose from all served with decent mash, peas (or mushy peas) and gravy. Good sized portions served along with a drink of choice meant we all ate well and enjoyed the 40s style ambience. It’s a good price per person for a very filling meal. Cute cafe with a great vegan pie on the menu, which is really delicious! Nice friendly staff and very quick service. Unfortunately the one thing that lets this place down is the cheesy wartime music being pumped out, which really grates and makes for quite an unpleasant sensory experience. I get that this is a themed cafe, and a bit of background music is fine and normal, but they could easily just quietly play music from that era to create the atmosphere without such clichés as 'White Cliffs of Dover' and 'We'll Meet Again'. The morning after we visited, this place came up in conversation at our guesthouse with some other guests who'd been there, and they all said that the music puts them off from going back, which is a shame because we all agreed that the food and service was great!

Visited this cafe in Whitby on many occasions and it has always been one of the highlights or our holiday. But today unfortunately was not one of them. What was once a 1940’s nostalgic well kept cafe now resembles a neglected cafe that time has not been kind to. The food also was a big letdown. The menu has removed our favourite pies (corn beef hash and also the lamb pie ). And the pies we got do not resemble the much loved ones of previous visits. The mash was gooey, and it all could have been warmer. A disappointing visit, with so many other nice places to eat in Whitby, unfortunately we will not be returning.

Each time the door slammed open and shut, sending gusts of freezing cold winds through you. We didn't stay for food as we were waiting too long and a good job we didn't as apparently the mash isn't lactose intolerant friendly. They put butter in it. So even if you're vegan you're not getting what you want. A shame really as it's a really quaint place and could be special if they gave the whole place a bit of tlc.

We’ve been looking forward to trying humble pie and mash for such a long time after hearing such good things. However we were left thoroughly disappointed and flabbergasted at how it manages to get so many good reviews. The pies looked and tasted like mass produced factory pies that had been bought in, the mashed potatoes were so horrible and lumpy and the peas tasted like tinned mushy peas instead of real dried/soaked peas. I can’t believe a shop selling only pie, mash and peas aren’t able to make their own pies and are unaware of how to mash potatoes properly. Avoid this place if you enjoy nice pie, mash and peas

Humble Pie is a small place full of character, the 1940s theme is great and the pies are amazing. Staff were lovely and the service was super fast, a relatively small menu means you don’t have to spend ages perusing it and you know whatever you order will be top drawer. We got the steak and stout and the minced beef and onion pies, both were fantastic. There is a lot to be said for pie, mash and mushy peas served on a tin plate with a mug of delicious Yorkshire tea. Stumbled upon this place on a Sunday noon and we enjoyed a very warm welcome, they could still offer us a place in the beer garden, inside was fully booked. The food (Sunday roast of course) was magnificent, nice atmosphere, prices were good, service impeccable. Recommend this place!

Outstanding quality food with sea views from the restaurant's cliff top position. It was a shame that there were only 4 diners this evening and service was slow. The food was exceptional in both quality and value for money. I'd recommend the Yorkshire chicken and apple crumble cheesecake.

We didn't realise the Fox is quite a drive from Saltburn-by-the-Sea but don't let that put you off...we had the warmest welcome, friendly service and awesome food..all in all a great experience and a lovely evening ❤️
