A great alternative to fish and chips. Great value for money and we were so full after the meal we had to go lie down for an hour at our hotel. Yummy

Wonderful, found by by our eldest son on social media. Well worth a visit, loved the 1940's wartime music, the decor to match. Great service, food was fabulous, left feeling stuffed! Only one thing missing for me and my hubby, no plant based milk for the tea, the plant based food was incredible, would've loved a cup of tea to with it. Best food we've had in Whitby and we visit regularly.

Recommended by a friend this place did not disappoint. We went for a late lunch on a Sunday and managed to get 5 of us seated quite promptly. The menu is not overloaded with choice - nice and simple pie & mash. About 7 different pies to choose from all served with decent mash, peas (or mushy peas) and gravy. Good sized portions served along with a drink of choice meant we all ate well and enjoyed the 40s style ambience. It’s a good price per person for a very filling meal. Will definitely be coming back!

Cute cafe with a great vegan pie on the menu, which is really delicious! Nice friendly staff and very quick service. Unfortunately the one thing that lets this place down is the cheesy wartime music being pumped out, which really grates and makes for quite an unpleasant sensory experience. I get that this is a themed cafe, and a bit of background music is fine and normal, but they could easily just quietly play music from that era to create the atmosphere without such clichés as 'White Cliffs of Dover' and 'We'll Meet Again'. The morning after we visited, this place came up in conversation at our guesthouse with some other guests who'd been there, and they all said that the music puts them off from going back, which is a shame because we all agreed that the food and service was great!

Å single vegan pie option - but what an option! Mushroom & ale pie, with vegan mash and mushy peas (normal peas available), delicious. While the venue is on the more intimate side the service is swift and friendly. Reasonably priced as well for how tasty it was. Most places increase the price of the vegan version, but this one cost the same, which I really appreciate.

Visited this cafe in Whitby on many occasions and it has always been one of the highlights or our holiday. But today unfortunately was not one of them. What was once a 1940’s nostalgic well kept cafe now resembles a neglected cafe that time has not been kind to. The food also was a big letdown. The menu has removed our favourite pies (corn beef hash and also the lamb pie ). And the pies we got do not resemble the much loved ones of previous visits. The mash was gooey, and it all could have been warmer. A disappointing visit, with so many other nice places to eat in Whitby, unfortunately we will not be returning.

Untidy and dirty, door was propped shut with a chair because it was broken and we were sat infront of it waiting for ages due to take away orders being served To crowds outside. Each time the door slammed open and shut, sending gusts of freezing cold winds through you. We didn't stay for food as we were waiting too long and a good job we didn't as apparently the mash isn't lactose intolerant friendly. They put butter in it. So even if you're vegan you're not getting what you want. A shame really as it's a really quaint place and could be special if they gave the whole place a bit of tlc.

We’ve been looking forward to trying humble pie and mash for such a long time after hearing such good things. However we were left thoroughly disappointed and flabbergasted at how it manages to get so many good reviews. The pies looked and tasted like mass produced factory pies that had been bought in, the mashed potatoes were so horrible and lumpy and the peas tasted like tinned mushy peas instead of real dried/soaked peas. I can’t believe a shop selling only pie, mash and peas aren’t able to make their own pies and are unaware of how to mash potatoes properly. Avoid this place if you enjoy nice pie, mash and peas

What a great place! We always have fish and chips when in Whitby but found out about this place online prior to our day trip. We can get pretty decent fish and chips at home so given the great reviews about this place we thought we’d buck the trend. We were not disappointed. Humble Pie is a small place full of character, the 1940s theme is great and the pies are amazing. Staff were lovely and the service was super fast, a relatively small menu means you don’t have to spend ages perusing it and you know whatever you order will be top drawer. We got the steak and stout and the minced beef and onion pies, both were fantastic. There is a lot to be said for pie, mash and mushy peas served on a tin plate with a mug of delicious Yorkshire tea. As a bonus every table has a bottle of Henderson relish on it! Fantastic place with great food. Today we ate humble pie and it was good.

We visited out of season, mid week, in about the middle of the afternoon. The food was exactly what it says on the tin, if you like pie and mash then you can pretty confident that you will enjoy the food they serve - it's excellent. We had a few reasons for visiting Whitby. There are many actually, but included in the top three things to do in Whitby for us is to eat humble pie at the Humble Pie n Mash Co. The charm of the place is off the charts. The staff are absolutely lovely (No surprise there, it's Yorkshire!) the service is super friendly and the food is proper, hearty, tasty and filling. Good, old fashioned grub. Served the way it should be. I was so proud to sit there eating my slow braised steak n stout pie, in that old 40s themed atmosphere I almost had tears in my eyes. That's off the charts! My wife and I both absolutely loved it and are currently thinking of moving to Whitby permanently just to keep coming back. Love ya, Humble Pie n Mash Co. Far more choice on website than is actually available. But as we were all hungry ordered from the limited choice. Soon after we had our food the waitress asked if everything was okay. I said no, it's far too salty. She just said "oh" and walked away. I realised she wasn't going to offer an alternative so tried my best to eat it - managed about half. When it came to pay I asked for a discount and was told that no-one else had complained. That's hardly the point, I wasn't happy with my food! Eventually agreed to knock my meal off the bill but with bad grace. The place itself is not very nice, I think they're aiming for 40s 50s vibe. But it's just tatty with plastic table cloths. .

This place is so good that you must book to avoid disappointment! We had planned to eat in Scarborough town centre having had a lovely afternoon watching a film and shopping, but the place we'd chosen had decided to close early because they'd had 2 busy days! I rang Walkers and threw ourselves on their mercy. They were of course fully booked on this Saturday night, but felt so sorry for us that they gave us a table in their pudding bar. There's a huge choice of meals, all beautifully hot and tasty and the staff are very friendly and efficient. I always have the haddock and prawn mornay which has a creamy sauce and is full of fish. It comes with chips, boiled potatoes or a side salad and on this occasion I chose the side salad, which was enormous and so much better than the usual small dish of limp leaves and tiny bits of tomato and red onion that places usually call a side salad (see photo). In the summer I usually choose the crayfish tails salad, which is also superb value, full of fresh salad and fruit with a most generous portion of crayfish tails. I've twice been with friends who've had to ask for a box to take home half of their portion which they've enjoyed for their lunch the following day at home! We're so lucky to have this wonderful, family run restaurant near us. Do go - but do ring first to book or you will be disappointed!
