Came here to celebrate a week’s glorious holiday and were blown away by the food and the welcome. This pub is a genuine classic serving an extensive menu of incredibly tasty food – from pub classics, through a specials board with some slightly more exotic fayre. Portions size is generous, and the staff friendly, helpful and human. The interior of the pub too have a real ‘authentic’ pub feel, which made our visit feel all the more satisfying. Pound for pound, the quality and service here are hard to beat frankly – we’ll be back again almost certainly – I quite fancy trying out their Sunday carvery – based on our weeknight experience it’ll probably blow our socks off! (Oh yes, the chicken curry - properly spicy - yum, yum, yum!)

Been on holiday near there twice now and have eaten at the black bull five or six times, always a joy, friendly staff, great homecooked food with large portion sizes and effortless service that makes everything run smoothly, our favourite place to eat in an area with lots of great pubs, but thebkack bull is the best. Booking is advised as dining area is often in demand.

We had the good fortune of staying a short distance from the pub so we tried it on our first night. What a delightful surprise it was, extensive menu, friendly staff and good beer. We had their fish and chips served with salad and peas. A huge meal with large fish and hand cup chips. We have eaten in more famous fish and chip restaurants in Whitby in the past but this beats then all. Very impressed.

We were stopping in Egton Bridge which we do on a regular basis this time instead of eating locally we decided to drive out to Ugthorpe which is only 10 to 15 min away after seeing decent reviews on tripadvisor. We were not dissapointed we booked into the resteraunt the main menu was quite substantial then came the specials board with another 9 so overwhelmed with the choices available. Nothing better than good homecooked food. Never seen such large portions and the quality was really good . Always room for a dessert again spoilt for choice ended up with homemade rhubarb crumble straight out of the garden ,the other 8 choices I would call as classical favourites. Thanks to Mark behind the bar who made us really welcome will definately be coming again.

Took notice of the road sign on way back from a family day at Scarborough. So glad we did. Food is really good quality home cooked food. Local pub environment but do not let that put you off like it almost did us. The welcome we got was great and had a really warm and friendly atmosphere. This was even with our 2 yr old having a major melt down Only regret is not having any room for the desserts as they looked amazing aswell So glad we found this place and will definitely be back.

Oh the roast dinner, what can I say…beef and pork, huge Yorkshire , choice of mash and roasters and four types of veg, fill your plate, sauces at the end and a boat of gravy delivered to your table with a smile. Absolutely delicious…not a fault, room for dessert, no probs, managed to share one with the other half. Highly recommended.

Just visited this pub for an Easter Monday evening meal during our stay near Whitby. We were looking for somewhere with a good choice of homemade pub food and this place certainly did not disappoint. Not only did we have a wide choice of main courses from the printed menu, but there was also an extensive choice on the ‘specials’ blackboard too and the term ‘homemade’ preceded many of the dishes. I opted for the Whitby scampi and my husband for the steak and ale pie. When the food came, it was freshly cooked and really well presented. It also tasted delicious. We then went on to choose a desert, again many being ‘homemade’ and traditional favourites. The desserts were equally as excellent as the mains. The service was also excellent and the staff very friendly and welcoming. My only complaint is that this pub isn’t nearer to home so we can eat here regularly!

We ate here twice within a week this March, after visiting about a year ago and having a superb meal. The food (main courses and desserts) was again superb on both visits over the last week. Many pubs and restaurants left themselves down on desserts, even if the starters and main courses are superb - definitely not the case at The Black Bull. Large portions, hand cut chips, very varied ‘specials’ main course options to supplement the main menu. Very friendly service. Reasonable prices. Cosy pub interior. Nailed it :-)

Booked in for a Sunday carvery with the family. well what can I say..... it was absolutely delicious. When we booked we told them there would be veggie dining with us (me), they said not a problem just let us know when you get here. I got the option of a vegan cottage pie or a Lasagna. I chose the cottage pie. they told me I could go up to the carvery and get unlimited amounts of the veggies and Yorkshires - so I did! not realising how big the pie would be... lets just say I couldn't finish it so had to bring it home in a box. The rest of the family couldn't finish some of the meat as you get loads so we brought it home for the 2 dogs - they loved it too!!. It was one of the nicest carvery's I have ever had!!!! we will most defiantly be back. It can get very popular so I would book before had to make you you get a dinner

All the reviews are spot on. This is tremendous in all respects. It’s a lovely, cosy country pub with lots of nooks and crannies. If I hadn’t been driving I’d have sampled the selection of fine looking ales but that’ll have to wait till next time. We were shown through to the dining area where the small but perfectly formed carvery was. Staff here were extremely helpful and pleasant. There was a great choice of veg, spuds and various sauces but the stars of the show were the huge slices of succulent beef and pork that were heaped on our plates. No room for a pudding but the choice was very good and varied. A return visit is a must.

Sunday dinner was generous, beef overcooked for me, purley personal preference. Mash was lumpy and not creamy, roasted potatoes tasted reheated to me. These days with cost of eating out, food should be 100% and better or the same as you can cook at home. Open from 18.00 only, except Sunday, throughout the week. Busy and well used. Friendly staff and helpful. We had to have takeaway as they don't allow dogs inside, for this reason we have not frequented the pub throughout our stay in the village. Hence I have given 1 star for atmosphere.

Booked for Sunday lunch and sat under cover in the beer garden with our young dog. Sunday lunch is a carvery serving, on this occasion beef and pork together with Yorkshire pudding, roast and mashed potatoes and three veg, all of which were tasty and well cooked….I found the beef was to die for and I was told the pork was as well, we were offered “ pudding” but there was absolutely no way we could have eaten anything more as the portions were so large. Altogether a great meal and excellent value!

I had the curry of the specials board first time with half chips half rice good portions of both and plenty of curry, my friend had chicken parmsan with chips, which was a very large portion. Both where very good and tasty. Second vist I had the chicken and chriso pie with potatoes and veg. Large chucks of chicken in the pie and very tasty, my friend hand the beef goulash with dumpling which she said was very good. Portion where to filling to have a pudding. Two ales on the bar Old Perculiar seem to be the regular beer of the two, which suits me.

I know when you visit Whitby it's usually a given to have fish and chips. But being a Sunday we fancied a Sunday roast, so I searched on Google for a pub that did them. After looking at a few we stumbled across the black bull inn so decided to give it a try, and so very glad we did. It's about 20 minutes drive (roughly 9 miles )from Whitby but worth every mile. It's a great authentic village pub that is probably the heart of the village that serves really really good food. We had one of the best carverys I've had in ages with as much really tasty meat and veg you could ask for,and excellent polite bar staff. We drove back to Sheffield full and very satisfied and we really recommend this great little pub.

O dear. Loved this place: young enthusiastic staff, wide variety of gins and other interesting drinks, super salads, open and closed sandwiches. Our Whitby destination alongside a good wet fish shop. Now just another caff. Good luck to the ladies running it but it needs to be smartened and the grubby menus replaced. We should have known when we arrived at 1pm on a sunny midterm day: deserted quadrangle and mostly empty indoors.

Wow, walked down to East Ayton from the Lodge for evening meal and found Walkers Fish Restaurant. Yes dog friendly so found our seats. Menu was large not just Fish and Chips. Both chose haddock, mine battered but Peg chose grilled (how good is that). Followed that with a wide selection of ice cream. They gave us a small plate for each of the 2 pets to share ours. If in the area we will be back again and would recommend checking the menu to see the lovely choice then going.

What a great place! We always have fish and chips when in Whitby but found out about this place online prior to our day trip. We can get pretty decent fish and chips at home so given the great reviews about this place we thought we’d buck the trend. We were not disappointed. Humble Pie is a small place full of character, the 1940s theme is great and the pies are amazing. Staff were lovely and the service was super fast, a relatively small menu means you don’t have to spend ages perusing it and you know whatever you order will be top drawer. We got the steak and stout and the minced beef and onion pies, both were fantastic. There is a lot to be said for pie, mash and mushy peas served on a tin plate with a mug of delicious Yorkshire tea. As a bonus every table has a bottle of Henderson relish on it! Fantastic place with great food. Today we ate humble pie and it was good.
