Excellent service! Excellent food! Best in town!

The curry was like a block of jelly, they curry would not move the rice was dry and noodles were shocking, absolutely disgusting food, could not eat it I tried it but it was vile ended up in the bin, HOW DO YOU THINK THIS IS ACCEPTABLE, people deserve better AVOID AT ALL COSTS

First & last time eating here. I went in for a small chips, to be told you have to spend £5 if paying by card. So I ditched the chips idea & decided on a chicken chow mein instead, to then get told it’s a minimum of £10 by card for Chinese… so I added some prawn toast to make it up. I wish I had walked out at the £5 minimum for chips on a card. I ended up paying £14 for chicken chow mein & prawn toast. I would’ve been able to swallow the cost had it not been so difficult to swallow the food! Absolutely disgusting, thick slimy noodles that tasted of I don’t know what, the chicken was slimy & had a weird texture. Nothing else like a bit of chopped spring onion or onion. The prawn toast, the grease squirts into your mouth as you bite into it. All in all very unpleasant & expensive.

Unique combination of a "proper English Fish and Chips" and a great Chinese, with Thai dishes too, very convenient if some of family want English and rest Chinese. Please somebody setup a Chippy+Indian !

Both the fish/chips and Chinese takeaways are good and reasonable value for money

Ordered three items on a Sunday night, they forgot to provide one of them. Called up when I got home and they said to pop in and pick them up at a time convenient to me and offered 10% off my next order. Called up a few days later to order the missing item and they said they couldn’t find my order and they aren’t willing to replace the missing item. Poor customer service and I will not be using again

Normally pretty good, but tonight - my wifes prawn with bamboo shoots and water chestnuts were so salty she couldn't eat it all. My chicken with black bean sauce had mord salt than normal. Different chef? No sweetness at all. Disappointing.

Best Chinese in Newbury, brilliant as fussy kids can get fish and chips while adults enjoy a Chinese and they get the order all ready to go together.

Disgusting food and service. Food was cold and tasteless. When we called up to complain the lady told us the only way to get a refund is to bring the food back. This was a complete inconvenience for us as we live 10 minutes away (20 mins in total) Please avoid!

We have used this Chinese for years.Always been very good but tonight was the worst Chinese I have ever had from anywhere. Burnt Dry Tasteless And to top it off even got the order wrong. sweet and sour sauce was watered down slop Heaven only knows what has happened to this establishment .

Fish and chips are good but running out of cooked chips on a Friday evening is very poor service.

Used to love going here change recipe of sweet &sour sauce and the chicken balls were well over cook .

Made our order via the phone. She read it back to us, and we went and collected it. Got home and our fish and curry sauce was missing, food was freezing cold and we don’t live far away. We rung up and explained this to a woman on the phone. She was adamant that we didn’t order the fish, and passed the phone to another woman. The fact that they didn’t take ownership of their mistake and verify it says what kind of establishment this is. Additionally in the past they have missed things off our order or given us the wrong dish, not worth wasting money on. Will not be returning, and I will advise others to do the same. Awful food and equally as awful service.

Best chippie in Newbury also does Chinese food Highley recommended. Prices have gone up but that's to be expected the way the Conservative party have had 13yrs to wreck this country

Been coming here for years, foods always spot on and the staff are always friendly.

Stood there for some & time wasn't even acknowledged! So left never to busy to say hi

This was our first time trying Howan out and the people in the shop were very nice so we had good expectations. Believe me when I say there is no malice in the rest of the review, however; That was by a country mile not just the worst Chinese food, but food of any origin I have ever had. I have never known food to be so bland yet taste so awful. It was like eating hot puddle water. Everything had just the wrong amount of slimy texture, whilst the “chicken” in the chicken curry instantly disintegrated under the lightest touch from the fork. The spring rolls were 98% boiled cabbage and had an internal temp of 7000 degrees 30 mins after we brought the food home. The sweet and sour sauce is a fantastic choice if you are in particular need of a strong fluorescent red adhesive, maybe one of your walls has fallen down and you’d like to repair it? The chow mein noodles had the consistency of 2 day old jellied cat food and even the prawn cracker made a ridiculous amount of noise when you eat them. Fully aware the last one is not their fault but it was the cherry on the cake to what is easily the worst eating experience I have ever had. I feel bad for my bin that it has to hold the food until I take the bins out tomorrow. On reflection I would not choose to eat here again, even if I was starving and it could save us from world war 3. We are a resilient people who would make our way back but my stomach will never be the same again.

The staff are normally abrupt to the point of rudeness but today they refused to cook me anything on the fish and chip side because they were closing soon

Tasty Chinese takeaway. Really enjoyed the crispy duck. But the fish and chips are even better! Huge piece of cod! Tastiest chips I've had in ages. Terrific curry sauce as well. Definitely our new go to when we visit.

Had chicken curry with chips. Worse I've ever had. Chips were dry and been warmed up from day b4. Chicken was over cooked and dry as well wouldn't recommend at all

Haven't had Howan since they closed down their wonderful dine in restaurant further down the road.....thought to give it another try and very happy that food is better, the beef noodles with sauce is good, the Singapore fried rice was a hit with the kids..they were also very understanding when I made a mistake with an order. Crispy Lamb is delicious and a very generous portion. Can't wait to try their other specials! FEB 2023 - haven't had in a while and tonight was the best Stir Fried noodles we had ...authentic Chinese restaurant level and could taste the wok hei ...really impressed 👏 everything else was also good but the noodles surprised us in a very good way

The best takeaway by a mile as a fish n chip shop....hot , fresh , just nom nom nom . As a Chinese takeaway , brilliant , fresh , warm, great portion size. The whole business is brilliant....clean, friendly staff, great value ... Simply best in town by a country mile.

Really good portions and taste.

They used to be very good but they are so rude now when you call. They just shout really fast at you. And when you get there to collect they do the same. They scream fast sentences at you with no manners. Like you're a part in their production line, like dirt on their shoe and not a person standing in front of them. Good food, but very bad service.

Who doesn't like fish and chips? People who are wrong, that's who. And this chippy is good. Word to the wise, though... "large" on the menu should read "huge".

Generally pretty good, though you'll get the occasional dud portion of chips. Often depends on when you go, and it's sometimes better to suffer the wait when they're busy, so everything is fresh.

Decided to go back here after a few years of going elsewhere and i wasn't surprised at how bland and tasteless the food is. on the other hand if it's a lucky night the British chips can be ok.

Nice convenient location just outside the center of Newbury. Parking isn't so bad. Few spots outside the front, or nice and easy roadside parking. The staff are friendly enough. The place appears clean and tidy. The food Is a reasonable price and of reasonable quality.

Went in for a simple bag of chips, apart from the kid behind the counter having the social skills of a snail, my money was taken and then told it would be 15 mins and I would have to wait outside in the rain, while others before me were standing around inside unchallenged. Apart from 2 elderly people already standing outside getting soaked! Of course they don’t then have any means of letting people outside know when their order is ready! The chips were definitely not worth a 15 wait getting soaked in the rain. Poor service, poor quality……..never again. Much better alternatives in Newbury than this place. I certainly won’t be using it again. Avoid

Disgracefully rude staff, customers to wear masks in the building yet not 1 person working there had a mask on. Food was awful this time, cold, badly wrapped, chips hardly cooked, Chinese food cold. This place used to be really good but the sheer rudeness of staff and poor food will keep me away from now on.

Called 8.44pm no answer walked the dog over there by 8.52 and they were locking the door I said that I had tried to call and he said I had missed last orders obviously in a rush to leave but not great customer service much better when the adults are there!

Wasn't expecting the disappointment. Checked the rating and went for this takeaway however food was not as expected. Bit disappointed, not the same quality as we were used to in another part of the country as we just moved to this area.

Awful, staff prepared wrong order, didn't know till I was back home and to top that what they prepared was inedible. Won't be going to this takeaway for long years to come that's for sure. Onion rings and the chips soaked in fat to a point bag was leaking in to the car. Ignorant stuff as usual.

The food is good and there is plenty of it. I usually share a small chips with my daughter and we have a cod bite each. More than enough for dinner! The Chinese food side is also really good. Friendly staff and really good value!

Can't fault it in general! very generous portions and lovely staff. Had an off experience last time with slimey/spoiled cucumber with my duck hence the 4 star. But I can assure it's the only time I've ever faulted Howan. I'd still go back as it's one of my to go spots.

Busy as ever great fast service every working hard to deal with the current pandemic.

When we have recently order from this chip shop. We have had missed item from our orders. Once is acceptable, but twice is not acceptable. They never seem to check order that they send out for delivery. Personally I think the chip should take a little bit longer preparing orders that are delivered, as in checking the order fully at the start when they get the order in from there delivery partner.

During lockdown been desperate for a Chinese. Extremely disappointed with the food. You could tell the satay sauce was made a while ago as it was just clumps that fell onto your food. The prawn crackers tasted stale and had 0 flavour. The first and last time unfortunately, very disappointed as heard very good things about the place.

Use both the Chinese as well but last weekend had fish and chips fantastic but the downfall was waiting 40 mins couldn't understand why only five people in front
