Absolute joke I don’t understand how hard it is to make a burger the bun was soggy causing the extreme amount of salad to fall out in the end I had to eat a classic burger with a knife and fork because once I actually got to the meat it was soup. All staff must need a cooking 101 on burger building

My husband and I approached the counter and I began to order. The assistant ( a shortish man in a grey top and black baseball cap)immeadiately turned to my husband and asked him what his order was. My husband asked me to confirm mine,again I was deliberately ignored and he turned to my husband asked my husband about his preference with his order. When we paid,my order wasn't even taken.My husband asked where it was and the said,"Oh 10 minutes for chicken!" and walked away Appearing from another door looking over and sniggering....we complained to the Manageress, but will not be returning

If we are wanting fish and chips (or battered sausage) we always go for Crown Mead for it. Good portion sizes and good prices too. Staff are friendly and you don’t have to wait too long either.

Poor food, poor service. Had to wait ages for food to be cooked and a customer in front of me had ask about his order and how it would be guessing he'd been there awhile. Wont be returning any time soon. Only used as normal chippy was shut on a Sunday.

So this place is in need of some customer service. Ordered some food and got home to find half my stuff missing. Phoned back and was told I can’t have the food as they haven’t got it anymore. Then said maybe you can get a refund sometime. I then had to go out and reorder half the stuff I asked for. I’m shocked this place is busy on the weekends. The food is nothing to write home about. The only good thing is the milkshakes. Running my own takeaway so I would not normally give a company bad reviews. But in this case I will make an exception.

Best chippy in thatcham and newbury. Not over priced, huge selection of food. Staff polite and helpful. The chicken pieces are huge compared to some places. Totally delicious food!

Good and bad items for me but I am fussy something are not for you but you will find lots you will like as its a big menu. I have had better but I have had a lot worse in Newbury but this is one of 4 chips shops I will eat at

Got a kebab from here absolutely disgusting salad wasn't fresh and pure excuse for kebab.

My first visit as not a local. The man serving the chips physically showed me the 3 different sized portions. My partner had a large battered sausage and he and I and our 5yr old shared a medium sized portion of chips which was plenty. The price was very reasonable & we were served with a smile, they apologised for the wait as 1 person in front was being served but it was barely a minute wait. I would happily recommend this chip shop.

Be aware that they don’t stick to opening hours as I got there before 2:30 ( which they have a sign of there opening hours ) and they were closed

Chick King has had so many ups and downs since Doug retired, so I haven't been in a hurry to review it. I am now happy to give it a 5, though. The lunchtime specials are a bargain price and the fish has been consistently spot on over several visits.

Lovely, I’ve been in here a few times now, lunchtimes and this evening. The chips, fish and curry sauce taste fabulous, even tried a pineapple fritter as saw someone order it last time I was in. Def recommend and staff are lovely and polite also 10/10

Disgruntled🤬!!!!ordered a large chicken kebab really specified 2 times only to find out when l got home that it was small of which l was charged for large the portion was too little.

We have been coming here since before my kids could walk. This evening my now teenagers, wanted chicken but it was a long wait so I asked them to pick something else. They suggested they would prefer to get different food. Your staff overheard and thought it was really professional to joke about my kids while we stood in line. We went to another chippy. It was good. We won't be back.

Love the fact the new owners brought back gluten-free and any time of day! You have to give it longer to be cooked as cooked completely to order, however, it's worth it. The only thing we've found is occasionally the fish comes out a bit greasy but still tastes good. The GF options are not badly priced either. You can order and pay online or via the app, or order and pay cash upon collection. Non GF also good according to eldest and hubby. Hubby prefers the southern fried chicken from here as opposed to the other takeaway in Crown Mead - more meat on it!

Friendly, quick service. Would have been five stars, but the extra cheese I paid for wasn't there. Not a huge issue, and won't stop me going back.

As fish and chip shops go, this is a good one. Under new management for a while now. I'm not here that often but the food, service and atmosphere were exactly as you would want from a good "chippy".

Under new management and the food is excellent quality and quantity. It is very popular fish and chip shop so expect a queue on a Friday evening or order online which is the best thing to do. Staff are friendly and efficient.

10min wait for chips. They only cook in small batches so 🤷 😕 took a while. Bit frustrating. Nice people though.

This Fish Bar is under new management and is so much better than a couple of months ago. We had Fish and chips and it was so fresh and hot (a couple of months ago it was disgusting stale oil and chips had been reheated). So pleased we gave this shop another chance.

Really like this place. Has a great selection of food items and relatively well priced. Has some of the best chips around in my opinion. Portion size is also quite generous. Recommend this place.

Last time I went there they did well to make sure it is hot when you get home I hate my chips getting cold on way home

4 years ago I gave a 5 star WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOUR CHIPS? 3rd chance in last month and can't eat them. So dry and at 6.30 pm should be fresh especially with the world cup England v Wales on, have they been prepared and cooked this morning and kept in a warmer ready for a rush tonight?

Nice chips, southern fried chicken was a little disappointing, would say its been sat there to long under the heat light, very dry coating and chicken was not that moist, was ok but think it would have been to dry shortly afterwards, the sausages was good and the fish was very nice, would recommend but keep a eye on the southern fried chicken section, as that maybe a disappointment for some.

Great food, friendly service and amazing value for money. Best Fish & Chips in the area with a lovely traditional curry sauce! Would definitely recommend this place.

Staff are always smiling, very respectful and understanding. Also myself and my family love the addition of the gluten-free menu as it means we don’t have to travel far.

Hungry, looking for a good fish and chips shop then you have to visit this place. It can be sometimes busy and the reason for this is that its popular here serving customers great selection of meals available.

Our food from here was awful, the chips were cooked in burnt oil tasted rank, chicken was dry and inedible Cannot recommend at all.

I'm sorry to say that the food is not good here. I purchased fish and chips and as soon as I broke into the cod, I could smell ammonia coming from the fish. The fish had clearly gone off. Worth avoiding.

It used to be a decent fish and chip shop. I picked up some food from there recently and it was abysmal, the chips where old that had been reheated and the fish tasted like an old bath sponge, there was only one winner and that was the Dog!

Recently changed management still great value. Food quality however I'd a but more hit and miss than before.

While I hate to slander what used to be my favourite fish and chips shop, under this new management they have gotten much worse. After giving them two attempts since then, they missed out half the order the first time and the second took over 10 minutes just for some chips... Some *chips*, which coincidentally were way too salty also. It used to be a fast, amazing taste place, but it has gotten so bad as of late that I do not know if I can recommend it anymore

The place is clean and tidy enough from what you can see. The server was a bit miserable and not very welcoming. He got our order wrong also, God knows how! The food is quite reasonable. Won't be rushing back in a hurry.

Awful. Worst fish and chips for years, sopping in fat, soggy and chips were just like mush…. Avoid at all costs.

Ordered a kebab, probably one of the worst. Bread was hard, too much meat not enough salad and chilli sauce isn't homemade! Out of a bottle, so glad I asked for the chilli sauce separately. Chips were ok

Cod is amazing no skin or bones great chips. Kebabs are delicious and kids love the burgers.

Disgusting customer service on phone and in person funnily enough it's the same woman the other reviews people found rude bone in the chicken curry aswell as hair could be honest accident but should still be apologised for as its unpleasant and found out the make it by peeling off the fried chicken and putting it in a curry sauce probably because they cant be bothered to serve decent food better takeaways in the area avoid this one if there wasn't denial and excuses on the phone and in the shop it could be ignored.

I got a donor kabab and for 3 days now I’ve had stomach ache and stuff todo with a toilet and I feel horrible don’t order a kabab it’s sickness

Third time in past three months I've been disappointed with there food and this time after almost finishing a mixed donner my stomach started bubbling and I had to make a dash to the toilet, found staff rude and very blunt

I called to ask them if that do gluten free and they informed me they didn't followed by "what the hell". They called me back and asked why I told them to "f off" when I never said such a thing. Shouting at me down the phone, rude, asking me "who the hell do you think you are" "we don't do gluten free and we never will" (despite having a gluten free menu). Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

I bought 2 lots of chicken burgers and chips a couple of days ago. They were the worst takeaway meals I have ever bought/wasted my money on. The lady serving was quite unfriendly.

Poor at best, we had sausages and chips the sausage batter was not crispy at all, very soft sausages were poor quality, the chips were really greasy so much so I threw it away, definitely need to up Thier game there are so many other chip shops serving higher quality

Very aggressive staff... food ok but not what i ordered (chips like firelighters)... asked for chicken doner (as i always do) and got given a lamb doner and a very aggressive and threatening interaction... finally got a mixed kebab and a load of abuse.. will never be back....

Such a shame this place has gone downhill……..Chips really dry, southern fried chicken was also dry and nothing southern about it, battered sausage I could not even cut through…… really disappointed as been going here for years…….won’t be going back.

I have used this takeaway infrequently and had an extremely disappointing experience. My recent purchase was cod and chips, together with haddock and chips. The haddock was cooked while I waited; however the cod was very poor and must have been in the hot compartment for some time. The chips were very dry and inedible and must have stood for a considerable time. As you can read I am extremely disappointed with the takeaway from Chick King. Previously I have experienced similar poor food; therefore I will not be using Chick King again.

Took kids today 30/5/21 12pm, they had, burger and chips and nuggets and chips. Burger and nuggets were fine, but the chips were very hard, we had to throw away.......very disappointed in this.....looks like the chips from the night before rewarmed

The chips feel rubber and reheated. the chicken burger is nice and hot. I've been going to this chip shop for years so to see it go down hill upsets me. as someone who works in hospitality i know that you can have your ups and downs when it comes to cooking food. The shop was very clean so I'm giving them a 3 star
