Emperors new clothes come to mind. Tasting menu tried. It might be me but I could not taste anything specifically in any of the courses. Only slightly memorable course was the pudding which was very light and tasty. Sommelier friendly but only one wine of consequence. Nice occasion but not one to be repeated.

The tasting menu took 3 hours to be served with very little interaction from the waiter. Overall, the service wasn't great. There was no care or attention. Drinks took long to come and we waited up to 30-40 minutes in between courses. Overall very disappointed with this considering it is suppose to be the best restaurant in Newcastle. As someone who is proud to live in Newcastle and support local business I would not return here. Very sorry to be leaving this review.

Visited on Sunday for the feast. Could not fault anything from the nice unrushed friendly service and the excellent food. Snacks to start with optional crab and brown shrimp crumpets were all well presented and very tasty. Perfectly cooked chicken with braised lentils for main was accompanied by some delicious sides and the gravy was about as good as it gets. Very reasonably priced Michelin starred food would definitely recommend.

Excellent high-end food served in a characterful old merchants house. Our multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings was very good. Only the cod dish lacked a bit of seasoning and flavour. A bit disappointing given it's one of the main courses. The building is wonky, very old and very interesting. The entrance level that you walk through to go upstairs could do with something to make a warmer welcome. It felt a bit cold. Service was impeccable and friendly. Window tables are the best.

I’m used to frequenting Michelin star restaurants and whilst the food was exceptional, you don’t expect to wait 45 minutes for your first course. Poor service let this down.

We visited this weekend to sample the new Sunday menu. Food was excellent, staff and service were impeccable. You don’t feel like you’re being rushed through each course. It was a truly enjoyable experience and worth every penny. Yes it is expensive but that is reflected in the quality of the dishes, the restaurant, the staff and the overall experience. Lovely place, great ambience, feels very cozy and intimate. The food was great, balanced courses, great flavours. The starter was splendid, would come back just for it. The lamb was great, even if the star of the course was actually the vegetables and purée. The dessert was one of the best I’ve had, I hope to have it again in the near future. It loses one star because compared to other similarly starred restaurants I’ve been in Europe, it is more expensive for the experience it provides. More than a single starter is a staple, and ongoing bread and butter wouldn’t hurt also. Other than those it’s an experience I would recommend.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been to House of tides and based on my previous experiences, I had high hopes. The positives A couple of the dishes on the tasting menu were sublime, particularly the fish course with the lobster bisque. Also, My partner is a vegetarian and she declared that overall the food was excellent, with good variety. The other stuff This is an incredibly expensive restaurant and as such you expect the very highest experience, to be totally honest, it didn’t deliver from that point of view. The staff are quite friendly and professional, but if I’m being honest there is a bit of a brand identity issue here. The staff whilst attentive, were missing a few basics, for example. We weren’t offered the wine pairing which I only found out still existed when I saw the table next to me order, secondly, there was no towels in the bathroom to dry your hands on. when we pointed this out, the staff member was polite and thanked us, but no apology for having to dry our hands on our clothes! Thirdly and this is just in my opinion, there was a lack of overall warmth and ambience, caused my an awkwardness of the staff. Almost like they weren’t sure whether to be really friendly or mega professional. Maybe the staff were a little new and just need a bit more coaching. In Summary ( and I’m being picky here), The food is excellent, and overall the staff were pretty nice, but overall does it offer value for a bill over £300?, I’m not sure it does and would love to see an uptick, so I can come back and try it again.

A nice restaurant but one that surprised me with a few things. The taste of some dishes was not necessarily to my liking...for example the dessert did not surprise me at all despite the fact that I am a big dessert eater. The fish, on the other hand, was very good, as was the mashed potatoes or the warm bread. Honestly, I don't think I will go again, especially with a friend. The service was impeccable and the servers were 100% professional.

I need to start by saying that this is the best meal I've ever eaten. I was also a fine dining waiter in a former life. From the amazing olives at the bar reception, right to the end of the meal everything was delicious. The casual atmosphere around the dress code has a downside in the casual service, this is where I think they still need to find a better balance with this. The themes of the food for me were attention to detail and balance and that was stunning. I would recommend it still ans as a dining experience, it was excellent. Is crumbing down too formal for this place? I don't think it should be.

I visited House of Tides with friends for and chose the 7-course tasting menu. We opted for the wine pairing and the additional cheese course too…we wanted the full experience. The venue is located on the quay within a beautiful old building. There’s a bar on the ground floor while the restaurant is on the first. On the way in and out, the bar area was empty, so lacked any atmosphere for first and last impressions. The service was ok, everyone was informative about the food and drinks, but I think we were served by so many different people, it felt less of a personal experience versus other tasting menu experiences I’ve had. Not one server asked if we had enjoyed the food, or checked if everything was ok when the whole table didn’t eat one of the desserts. The food was a mixed bag, I enjoyed four of the seven courses, both desserts were not nice and couldn’t finish either of them (I’ve never not eaten a dessert in my life for context), so was disappointed. Most of the wine pairings were good, and the sommelier was very informative. I expected to be wowed by the experience and the food here, but both three friends and I were underwhelmed by both, particularly considering the nearly £270 per person bill.

Dinner House of Tides, Quayside, Newcastle Celebrating 10 years and still going strong. A multi award winning restaurant on the banks of the Tyne,in a Grade I listed 17th century merchant house. Looks can be deceiving as when we looked through the window earlier while passing,it looked empty. We didn't realise that was the bar and the restaurant was upstairs. It was a good job we booked as it was full to capacity. The ground floor is like an old pub where you can have a pre-dinner drink. The dining room is on the first floor, with a view out over the river. The menu is a simple choice. Nice tasting menu. Nicely compiled on local ingredients and products. The mushroom "Hen of the Woods" was probably the best of the whole tasting menu. We were disappointed with the "Whitby Crab" and the wife also had bones or pieces of crab shell in it. The service was "OKish", we appreciated the involvement of the very young staff (apparently still students in the industry), but sometimes they quite unnecessarily took away the butter with the bread or for a change they didn't quite synchronise the food delivery with the wine pairing so that one didn't have an empty glass or plate anymore. The sommelier, Matthew, was top notch and really lifts the whole restaurant up!!!

(This experience was a few years ago - so I can’t comment if portion size has changed since - this whole review is based solely on the tasting menu - cannot comment for a La carte) (Also maybe one important note - I was not drinking - if you pair the wine with the tasting menu I can only assume you’d be more full up than I was) I’m afraid I can’t agree with those saying just because it’s tasty food, that these joke size portions fill you up. I’d be lying if I said the food isn’t amazing, it really is great food, but the portions ruined it for me. I left still hungry and contemplating getting food from somewhere else, after we must have spent over £200 on food that’s a bit of a joke. I know fine dining portions are small, but I did expect them to get maybe a little bigger as we got closer to ‘main dishes’, but instead it got to the point where we were sat there in tears laughing, they would have 3 people come out, serve it super nicely, tell you what super special food it is, to just reveal yet another dish, which on a huge plate reveals a single bite size piece in the middle. I laughed more at the portions than I have at a comedy show so at least I got comedy out of it. I have nothing bad to say about anyone who works there, everyone was super professional and nice, only the portions were the problem, however as I went for food… That’s kinda a huge problem Also for regular Michelin goers who are more used to portion size like this, even my father who has been to numerous Michelin star restaurants said it’s the smallest portions he’d seen too, and was laughing just as much as me having my first ‘Michelin’ experience. So please even if you expect them to be small, expect smaller.

The food is excellent, well balanced flavors, but very small portions, excellent service. The only downside is that you are served 6 courses and you are outside again after just over 2 hours. It's going way too fast in my opinion I eat a lot in star restaurants because of the flavor combinations and you don't just go to eat but also have a relaxing evening out. If you drink a good bottle of wine that you have to down within 2 hours because they serve the courses like an express train, no, that is really a downside.

This was a return visit for a family celebration and we were all eagerly looking forward to a night of superb food. What a great disappointment!! We were first of all taken upstairs to an almost empty restaurant and shown our table BEFORE taking our coats. We had to ask for pre dinner drinks which were taken at the table. The food was nicely cooked but the helpings were meagre and served on cold plates. We had to rely on the doorsteps of sourdough bread to keep us topped up. We had to ask for the wine we had ordered whilst we were half way through our lamb course. The whole evening was soured by lack of attention. Sorry Mt Atkinson - we have been great fans of your food but WE WILL CERTAINLY NOT BE RETURNING.

We went to House of Tides for their tasting menu on a rainy Friday night in Newcastle. The restaurant and bar are lovely and cosy and the staff were all very friendly and attentive. However, while the food was all very nice (even the mackerel which I’m not usually keen on) we found it all to be absolutely tiny. We’ve been lucky enough to eat at several Michelin starred restaurants over the years and we’ve never left any of them feeling hungry, but we did at House of Tides. Also, we felt quite rushed - we were all done within 90 minutes. For an experience that costs upwards of £300 we would’ve liked it to last longer and to have felt full at the end.

If you're getting the wine pairing, don't go for 4 pints before hand then get a cocktail when you arrive. Rumour has it, that would make so absolutely mortal by the 3rd course.

We hadn't been here for a few years, so were excited to be going back. Unfortunately, the meal didn't come up to scratch this time, especially the meat course, which was so tough it was inedible. I have never before experienced that in a Michelin starred place. The oyster used to have drama with smoke swirling etc, but no more - just a few pebbles! The fish was nice, the crab a bit overwhelmed by the sauce. Fantastic bread and butter, but odd to have it named as a course. The pudding was quite good, but a bit ordinary. Maybe their energy is going into the new place. Super wines, and reasonably priced too.

From the moment we stepped in we were looked after superbly by the attentive and informative young waiting staff. We selected the 7-course tasting menu with the wine pairing and it was stunning. The attention to detail was magnificent, the food was just amazing, who'd have thought fermented asparagus could be heavenly? This was just one taste sensation amongst one dish on the tasting menu. I can't quite remember all the dishes, but the stand out for me was oyster dish. There were two desserts, which were a bit too sweet for me, and I don't have a sweet tooth, so my husband lucked out there. On reflection, I perhaps should have selected the cheese board at an additional cost. The sommelier was just fantastic, he was only a young man, but his knowledge and friendly manner was a joy. Whilst the food was amazing, the building just historically beautiful, the stand out for me was the staff. Each and everyone, were worthy of special note, I cannot remember any of their names, but the service and attention to detail was top top top class and brilliant. We went for a lunch sample menu on a Saturday. The food was perfectly balanced and not one course disappointed. The portions initially may look small, but with the number of courses and the flavours that come through, it is satisfying and scrumptious, and we did not leave hungry, like some people have mentioned. I feel people making those comments don't actually appreciate beautifully crafted and balanced meals. I also chose the additional cheese board, which I expected to be quite small, but it wasn't. There was a very good amount of cheese for the extra cost. I would definitely opt for it again. We opted for the wine pairing to go with the courses, and they were perfectly matched to either complement or cut through the flavours. The staff member explaining the wine was very professional and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was great, in the gorgeous wonky listed building. It has been decorated and celebrated well. Attended this establishment whilst pregnant and made my dietary requirements very clear to the restaurant manager weeks before arriving and on the day to all staff serving our table including the restaurant manager once again. After seeing the tasting menu upon arrival I explained that most of the items were not suitable for my condition and asked for a cheeseboard instead. The manager insisted I have a vegan menu for the same cost with lamb for the main as a slight alteration. After reluctantly agreeing we proceeded upstairs to our table, where the manager forgot to offer to take my jacket or share a stool for my bag. When the drinks came the table was wet and no one cleaned it. The bread crumbs weren't swept up either and plates were served on top of the very visible mess. The staff wore shoes that rattled the floorboards as they marched up and down the aisle and interfered with the atmosphere. And finally when the lamb arrived it was bleeding and pink! When we sent it back and asked to leave the manager had the arrogance to bring the full bill as if the service had been satisfactory. He struggled to sincerely apologise and when we emailed to make a formal complaint and request our 3 digit deposit back we were ignored. After having experienced the service and quality of Michelin restaurants all over the world I strongly rate this establishment well below that standard. House of Tides does not deserve a Michelin and the poisoning of pregnant women's food is a public health disaster. Very disappointed.

I'm sad I can't give more stars all round. The fabulous young, super professional and knowledgeable staff were an absolute delight, they happily and patiently explained all the dishes perfectly. The young Sommelier was a joy, I loved hearing about the food/wine pairings as much as experiencing them. The pairing with the Whitby Crab dish was phenomenal! (Sadly I can't remember any of the wines). The food was stupendous, especially the Lindesfarne Oyster with fermented asparagus....I could live on this for the rest of my life!! I'm singling out this dish and I don't know why as each plate was an intriguing, inventive and astonishing flavour explosion. I wish I'd had the cheese board: the 2 x desserts on the tasting menu were too sweet for me, my husband lucked out however 😆 The atmosphere was elegantly casual and I think this works so well in this beautiful building...one of the ceilings (white panelled plaster encrusted decor) dates back to the mid to late 1500's (I think I overheard?). The windows in the rear upstairs lounge area were gorgeous and oozing history, Our visit was a treat for our anniversary and I'd happily return and recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Had six course lunch menu for £85. Snacks OK, followed by a very small Lindisfarne oyster. From then on rest of tastings went from bad to worse. Each dish was extremely salty, sour, bitter and sweet but these flavours were not balanced. Portion sizes were very small, even for a tasting menu, so two baskets of sourdough bread were welcome. Pork dish was sous vide and consistency jelly-like; Pollock tasteless and shellfish bisque barely touched the plate. All in all a very disappointing experience for the price.

Thought the extras were incredibly overpriced. The reception at the bar area was underwhelming and I felt it would have been nice if the host girl had offered to take my coat. We ordered the tasting menu with wine and I felt the extra for the cheese and the red wine was massively overpriced and with a 12.5 percent service charge I didn't feel overly enthusiastic. The penultimate dessert didn't come with a wine pairing which felt like an omission given every other course did and the final white wine was honestly undrinkable. Mixed feelings leaving this as the venue upstairs was lovely and the upstairs waiting team were great, food and wine just didn't live up to expectations or price and I would not recommend the extra cheese and wine for the price. shame

Two of us enjoyed the tasting menu last week. the procession of dishes was tremendous: some really curious and interesting combination of flavours. Clearly, a competent kitchen with great direction. The serving staff were excellent: pleasant and engaging, professional and well trained. They clearly took pride in their work and in keeping the customers happy. My particular thanks to them

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Exceptional food, a real art form and never tasted anything like it. Staff were awesome, very well drilled and trained. Great knowledge of the food and wine. The food could not be faulted. Everything was just a huge wow… We had a great time and would recommend. Kenny came and said high too. Would definately go back. Well done all

We booked this restaurant ahead of a visit to Newcastle. The only reservation we had was the references to table turning in the booking information. Perhaps coming from the London area we are more sensitive to it. There was no need to worry. We were never rushed even though it was a Saturday night. The food was excellent as was the wine pairing We were well looked after all night by our waiter Tom. If you want a high end restaurant in Newcastle you will not be disappointed by this place. For what we had we thought it was excellent value for money.

Lunch at this excellent restaurant was a gift from son and his partner to my daughter and me. All the staff were welcoming, attentive and friendly whilst being extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine. We did not go for the wine pairing and opted to ask for recommendation which was a really good white Rioja. The food was delicious and whilst one might think the portions small we felt suitably full by the end. The courses were so tasty we couldn’t pick one favourite between us! Yes, it’s expensive but for a treat (birthdays and a special one to boot) it was a lovely experience and worth saving up for.

First time being in a Michelin ⭐ restaurant and really enjoyed the service and the food. The service was 10/10 and I mostly appreciated that the menu was fish oriented which you would expect. Nothing compares with the quality, the thought and the effort they put into the dishes.

Beautiful and delicious food. You could really pick out the flavours. All served in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. Staff very knowledgeable. Think prices are reflective of their Michelin star status. A very pleasant experience. Would highly recommend.

We visited this restaurant mid week for dinner. It was very unremarkable food, served lukewarm on cold plates. Some cold onion foam appetiser with tiny cubes of ham inside. Two nicely tasting miniature fish courses. The small cube of lamb was with a very overpowering...

Such a special place, utterly stunning food and fantastic service. You are made to feel very welcome and cared for. It's exquisitely decorated, the rest rooms even have a spa like quality with oil burners emitting gorgeous essential oil fragrances. The tasting menu was beautiful balanced and bursting with flavour. I would 100% recommended a visit for a special occasion. Will definitely be returning and trying their sister restaurant Solstice. Thank you House of Tides for an incredibly special evening.

Booked House of Tides for a honeymoon dinner, & so glad I did! Matthew was our server, & was so kind & informative of every dish that was served to us. House of Tides showed us how they earned their Michelin star. 10/10 will be recommending to anyone traveling up to Newcastle area. Pleasant staff & a wonderful tasting menu! What a way to start 2023! Thank you House of Tides!

Never written a review but felt compelled to. Really uninspiring dishes except 1 that was unbelievable, sea bass with curried mussels. Really over priced- paid £780 for 4 of us to be really disappointed. Been to Hjem which is another Michelin star in Northumberland and it knocks house of tides out of the water, just miles better in every single way. The service was ok- one young waitress was crying when she came over with the dishes after being told off for going to the wrong table.. everyone makes mistakes! Would never go again based on my experience- wasn’t awful but certainly not worth the money at all. No sense of experience either.

Liked this place a lot. Pity I can't afford to go more often. Had the piscetarian tasting menu and my partner had the meaty version of the same. All excellent. We also paid to have wine pairing with every dish which was well worth it and I recommend going for it. Really good sommelier, and value for money.

I took my friend for her 60th birthday. We were both looking forward to this after reading a few good reviews. Avoid this place! The food was not edible. The 2 desserts however were very nice. The service was outstanding. Very overpriced for the minature portion that you get. Also check your receipt as they added on an extra £35 for suggested service. Will definitely not be going back and would not recommend. Should have gone to a restaurant and had a 3 course meal and drinks all night would have been a lot cheaper and we would have been full.Came out of House of tides starving. Do not waste your money Don't know how they get away with this sample menu and charging what they did.

Paid a visit here a week ago and I must say I was sorely disappointed. The best course was the sourdough bread and butter. Found the courses either extremely tasteless or saturated in a strong lime flavour. Also opted for the cheese course with bland cheese and cardboard crackers. While my partner was still eating the waitress came over and whipped the dish away. He even said to her " can I take those peices of cheese please were still eating ". One of my vegetarian courses was cubed beetroot with pickles on top and another was a single price of pasta ravioli with 4 sliced peices of truffle on top. Another was a bright green tasteless risotto. Would I recommend? No I'm sorry

Well, where do I start!! I often go to this area to eat, I'd never heard of this place until my daughter and Son in law invited me for breakfast today. It's quite typical and fitting with its location. As I say, I've visited other eateries in the area. This place delivered on all fronts. A warm and friendly welcome, very efficient service (it's quite small, so you only get in if you're lucky enough to arrive at the right time). The breakfast lived up to the billing and some!!! I couldn't eat it all as its size outweighed any thing I've ever experienced, I'm sorry I can't reveal the cost because I didn't ask, when I got the bill for the 4 of us I just paid as it was definitely worth whatever they charge. The team of staff didn't disturb us unnecessarily even though there were people waiting for seats. If you're anything like me, you know when it's time to get up and make way for others. I would definitely recommend a visit but make sure your appetite is ready for the feast to come.

Top pub in the old Jesmond Railway Station. Hidden away and you wouldn’t know you’re right next to the city centre. Very nice atmosphere and pleasant staff with a good selection of beer.

Visited 09/11/24. This is a lovely place to eat. The staff were extremely friendly. We had to wait a while for our table, but our server explained that it was unusually busy and that the drinks we ordered while we waited were now on the house... as were the small aperitifs they served us shortly after. The food was delicious, and I do mean all of it, even the ingredients I normally wouldn't touch with a barge pole. We had a lovely meal, and the staff were extremely considerate and knowledgeable of my partner's coeliac condition. The issue began once we got home when, shortly before bed may partner started being violently ill. She's coeliac as I said, so sometimes this does happen even in the most careful of kitchens, unfortunate but understandable cross-contamination - or so I thought. Not an hour later I was also violently ill, and our condition continued in to much of the following day. If I was to guess, I think the issue was the "That Chicken Pie", which was the only dish we both had. We ordered off the Set Menu (50% cheaper than the usual Saturday menu) which normally isn't available on Saturday, but due to a typo on their website, we believed was available (they let us order from it without batting an eye - as I said, really lovely people and fantastic service). That dish isn't available on the tasting menu used on Saturdays so if there was a complication, I imagine that's where it was.
