Another visit here. It remains excellent in all respects: range of food, quality, service all top-notch. At very busy times there can be a queue but it is well worth waiting. Highly recommended.

Great,good value cooked breakfast

Cracking veggie breakfast, probably the best veggie breakfast selection I’ve seen so far in Newcastle. Would highly recommend. Plenty of other vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. The venue is really quirky, and it’s obviously very popular so get there a bit before you want to eat, as you’re likely be queueing to get in. Obviously a good sign that it’s a well known place for good food.

Only issue is because the place is fairly small and the demand is so high the queues usually outside the door

Había un poco de cola un domingo por la mañana antes de abrir, pero en realidad el café es bastante más grande de lo que cabría esperar. Me encantó la decoración por dentro. El servicio era excelente, precios razonables. El scone de patata y el pudín blanco me pareció que no eran geniales, el pudín negro era bastante bueno y todo lo demás era muy bueno. En general, fue un buen desayuno, en un entorno encantador.

Fantastic food every time, staff are always lovely even tho super busy

Relaxed atmosphere, good service and just the quality of food and drink I needed at the time.

I went in there yesterday at about 2 pm and I didn't have to wait at all. There was plenty of room. I chose the breakfast and it was very nice. Maybe if I'd asked for bread or toast with my breakfast they would have given it to me but that was the only thing that was missing. Sourdough toast with lots of butter would have been lovely.

Well, where do I start!! I often go to this area to eat, I'd never heard of this place until my daughter and Son in law invited me for breakfast today. It's quite typical and fitting with its location. As I say, I've visited other eateries in the area. This place delivered on all fronts. A warm and friendly welcome, very efficient service (it's quite small, so you only get in if you're lucky enough to arrive at the right time). The breakfast lived up to the billing and some!!! I couldn't eat it all as its size outweighed any thing I've ever experienced, I'm sorry I can't reveal the cost because I didn't ask, when I got the bill for the 4 of us I just paid as it was definitely worth whatever they charge. The team of staff didn't disturb us unnecessarily even though there were people waiting for seats. If you're anything like me, you know when it's time to get up and make way for others. I would definitely recommend a visit but make sure your appetite is ready for the feast to come.

Went this morning for the first time for breakfast, the veggie business - best veggie breakfast I’ve ever had!! Such good portion size and a varied plate, my only complaint is I’m sad I couldn’t finish it! Great atmosphere and staff were lovely and attentive despite it being busy, will definitely make this one of my regular visits 😁.

Food was lovely and the staff were really nice. The only thing was that we had to wait a long time for our coffees but I can appreciate that this was probably because it was very busy.

Food was good and bountiful. Milk Shakespeare were superb.

If you want to experience a classic British cafe with a great quirky style then this is the place for you. The food and drinks are top quality with excellent service. It can get busy due to popularity so don’t be worried if you have to wait. Credit for phot to @Kate.ovens as well. I knicked her photo for the brekkie as I was so blown away I forgot to take one myself.

Best place for an English Breakfast in England, Amazing food and service with out of this world flavour Inception on the taste buds. The only thing I can winge about is the qué which is out the door at most a 30-40 min wait, usually 10_20

I'm American, & I love pancakes in morning, Morrisons Cafe is NOT a place to go get them, Butterfly Cabinet is. My only issue is getting condiments after you received your order, it's like pulling teeth, takes long time, so know everything you need in advance, and you'll be ok, which I normally do but I'm American and had never been there before.

Disappointing. Nowhere near as nice as usual.

Día caluroso y abrasador afuera y el interior del Gabinete de Mariposas estaba desagradablemente caliente, así que una mesa afuera (desafortunadamente a la sombra) fue tomada a regañadientes por mí y mi hijo. Muy ocupado, pero nuestra orden de bebidas fue tomada rápidamente por el camarero amable y la espera estimada de 20 minutos para la comida era precisa. Ambos pedimos una de sus opciones de hamburguesas especiales y, aunque muy sabrosa, la mía estaba completamente equivocada o, como sospecho, le faltaban varios ingredientes. Lamentablemente los artículos que faltaban eran los que más me habían atraído a la hora de elegir: sin pudín negro, sin chorizo, sin aros de cebolla... En cualquier otro día me habría retrasado, pero estábamos en un horario, estaban ocupados y mi hijo estaba más que feliz con el suyo. ¿Iría otra vez? Sí... probablemente... si pudiera dar medias notas, esto sería un 3. 5 y sospecho que estarían descontentos por su error de omisión.

Always really good food and atmosphere. The friendliest and kindest staff. Our son hurt himself running and four different members of staff helped him with wipes, plasters and sweets. We're massively grateful. Thank you!

Great little hidden gem in Heaton

We got seated outside and waited over half an hour and no body came to give us menus or take our order etc ended up getting up and leaving. No matter how busy a food business is customers should not be waiting that long for service, Or should I say lack of service.

Great setting for a delicious bowl of soup. The menu was extensive, the welcome was homely and the experience was a delight.

The menu is full of choices, as well as serving breakfast options all day. Amazing atmosphere in the place and the staff are always happy to help. A gem of a place! Always busy but don’t let a short wait put you off. Huge menu with something for everyone! The Business (full English with extras) is enough to feed 3! Fantastic value and super tasty. Coffee’s pretty good too.

The food is top notch. However. Some wife was sat on one of the sofa's, at the window. Took her shoes and socks off and squatted on the sofa, as if she was about to eject her breakfast, before she had eaten it. I'm not certain why a restaurant, so to speak, allows hippies, to mooch around which their cheese wotsits out. Seemed hilarious to all staff. The staff are canny and hard working. It's Just they don't mind squatters and cheesy sofa's.

Really nice staff with a very quick service. Food was amazing we had buttermilk pancakes and a USA breakfast both really tasty and really good portions. Toilets were abit grim but not bad enough to make you not come back. Really good atmosphere with a really nice aesthetic. Big portions make it really good value for money. Would definitely come back.

Visited this cafe as my wife used to go to it 20 years before at uni and so a nostalgic visit was had. I had the "ultimate" breakfast, my wife had "the USA" and my daughter had apple and cinnamon pancakes. Everything was delicious. You can see from the pictures the portion sizes would make a Yorkshireman blush! My only minor gripe would be it felt a tad on the expensive side for a breakfast and the door kept blowing open. Not major gripes at all as I would absolutely go back in a heartbeat. A breakfast here *will* fill you up for the day

Around 5 years since last visit and let's just say it's not worth another one. Got seated straight away, order taken without a wait. One of the drinks ordered wasn't available which was fine as just picked something else instead. Items on menu are marked for allergies, however would be nice to be asked if any allergies/intolerances when taking the order to ensure a stress free dining experience being a coeliac. Food was average and not very hot. No hollandaise sauce for benedict and the waitress offered another dish when bringing out the rest of the food. Obviously not going to do that when everyone else's food had arrived, not really ideal being told as its placed on the table. Place needs a deep clean. Seen better toilets in a nightclub, really damp/dirty and not well maintained. Shame as its a stunning old building...needs TLC.

Absolutely disgraceful the staff in this cafe make you feel so uncomfortable just standing watching you when you go in at the door and also for the price the food wasent much better won’t be returning

Infamous brunch spot. There’s always a wait. The beans and hash browns in the business breakfast were really good. The rest was standard fare. There’s a pretty large menu so lots of things to try.

Ordered a salmon omelet, but it was full of cheese. The salmon was okay

Butterfly Cabinet is a fantastic place to go for food, their breakfasts are absolutely amazing though so I recommend visiting then! The place is incredibly popular (understandably), so expect to wait in a queue, but it is absolutely worth it, you will not regret visiting.

Still, hands down, the best fry up in Newcastle

Heaton Road is making a name for itself for eateries and independent traders, like the famous Block & Bottle beloved by the Hairy Bikers. We decided to have a mooch around and found Butterfly Cabinet. It has overtones of being an arty/bohemian cafe with weekly live blues music but all we saw was young families and grey-hairs like us - so a good mix! We were shown to our table by a smiley young waitress, it was in a quieter area which we appreciated as the volume of "rhubarb" was quite high. However it all added to a very nice friendly vibe. The menu was populated with many things and it was not long before our order reached us. The house white wine went down well and was really not pricey. We passed the time of day with one or two staff and it all made for a really pleasant sojourn. It's great to see young staff enjoying their job and transmitting that to the customers. One of my favourite words is serendipity - "a fortunate discovery", and that describes this place ideally.

Excellent food and welcoming staff

I've been coming here for years, infrequently but every time I'm in the area and fancy a treat. I'd recommended it to some friends so we decided to pop in, I noticed it was a bit quieter than it had been in the past. It's gone down hill. The staff were surprisingly rude, didn't bother checking for allergies and were really pissy in every interaction. I caught my leg on a nail sticking out of the back of a chair, it ruined the trousers I was wearing. I called over a waitress and she just took the chair. No apologies, no concern for if I had been scratched, I had. The toilets were also a bit gross. The food was passible, but with so many other options in the area now I don't think I'll be back in a hurry.

Came by here for a birthday brekkie. Had an amazing halloumi salad last year but fancied something hot this time so went for the USA! This comprised of 4 buttermilk pancakes, a pot of warm maple syrup, the BEST sausage I've tried almost errr ever, 2 crispy hash browns and some lovely medium crisp bacon rashers. The whole lot was really delish. The only thing i can fault it on was for the amount of pancake i wanted more syrup! This aside I'll definitely return for it again. Oh! And the coconut mocha was TDF ❤️

This is by far the best place to go for breakfast in the newcastle area. I have been over 200 times in 2023 and will continue to go at any opportunity I get. I have never had 1 issue with any food I've had. The staff there are incredible, friendly and so welcoming. They are a credit to your business and 100% the main reason I use the Butterly Cabinet as religiously as I do. Here's to many more thousand I'll spend here in the future 🤣😆 Richie

Staffing is a major issue. I struggled to get attention of staff who were constantly grazing and drinking behind counter. Its clear that its a great, fun place to work, but i felt like i was an outisider in their space, and i was interrupting the time they shared together as friends. For example i was finally able to ask gor vinegar, the staff member brought over a bottle, said its empty, i assumed she would look for another, but i didnt see her again. Staff were more interested in their social interactions, and im not sure how hygenic it is eating and then serving food without washing hands in bewteen. Food is good as always, but id like to go somewhere i feel part of the experience rather than an annoyance, or outsider.

First visit as although it’s a Heaton institution I’ve been put off by the queues at the weekend. Happily the queues don’t exist during the week. Very extensive menu with a great range of sandwiches, burgers & salads. After much deliberation I opted for the halloumi salad. Excellent choice although I will admit to food envy when I saw my friends burger & the absolutely outstanding chips that came with them. Everything was fresh, tasty & done to a high standard & service friendly. I’ll definitely go again

Lovely breakfast and nice coffee

The big breakfast is still great. Everything else is not worth the wait and price tag no more. Waited outside for 15 minutes and no one even came to check. Waited inside for around 10 minutes with no one even making eye contact. Waited for service at our table for around 10 minutes then Waited 20 minutes for drinks then food to arrive. Could have been a easy 5 stars if service didn't let them down

My fiancé and I arrived just before 10 and had to queue, we didn't wait for too long thankfully as it was a really cold day 🥶 When we were seated we ordered the Business breakfast and Salmon & Eggs, a coconut mocha and a pumpkin latte with two orange juices. The food and drinks arrived promptly and were delicious! When we left there was a very lengthy queue! 😬 Good thing we arrived when we did!

Food is good with a great selection of meat, vegi and vegan. There's a children's menu too. The staff are friendly and helpful. We sat at the back where there were plenty of space with kids Very popular so be prepared to queue as there's no booking allowed. They do NHS discount so bring your card!

My first visit to the Butterfly Cabinet after hearing great things about it. I was not disappointed!!! The food was excellent, great quality and freshly cooked. I had poached eggs, toasted muffin, beans snd bacon. Eggs were cooked to perfection and bacon was excellent quality. Great portion size. My friend had full English which looked lovely and again perfectly cooked and good quality products. She also had toast - two slices of brown seeded bread. We both thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts washed down with hot tea. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Looking forward to my next visit.

This place just isn't the same as it used to be. My breakfast was luke warm when it came and veg sausage tasted under cooked. My some had a hair in it which was neither of ours and when I mentioned this all the response I got was I'm so sorry I will let the chef know that's £26 please. I can't see me returning

Basic food not sure why it is always so busy. The hot chocolate was lukewarm the restaurant was not busy when we went. Won't be going back in a hurry

Great prompt service. Food cooked perfectly- Salmon Omelette was delicious and really really filling! Peach tea nice and refreshing. Was able to just chill and relax without being pestered by staff...waitress both were lovely and attentive. Highly recommended 👌

This is our second visit in the past two weeks. The first visit we were overcharged. The second visit nearly ended the very same way. We returned a cold breakfast and was told three times it has been removed from the bill. IT HAD NOT! I don't think a farmhouse omelette is £20! We found the two female staff very rude and refused to answer our questions. We live local and have been many times in the past without any issues.

The milkshake was very nice. The "Business" (large full English) was very tasty, but the menu said it came with white pudding but there was no white pudding. The smoothie was more like a water juice than a smoothie. The prices in the online menu are incorrect and need updating.

Very disappointed. Went with my daughter for a birthday breakfast and both agreed it has gone downhill massively since our last visit. The eggs Benedict were hard boiled and the full English was drowned in beans. They took up more than half the plate. Not sure if they’ve changed chefs but it’s such a shame.

Excellent eatery with queues often out the door. Vaste menu on massive laminates cover just about everything you could want. My fav is the USA breakfast. Highly recommend.

Moved table as seated near the door and people standing over us eating. There is always a crowd. Food is usually excellent but ordered the falafel burger. It tasted like no falafel I have had before. More like a spicy bean burger. The consistency was far too wet and contained green peas not chickpeas. Very disappointed.

My husband and I recently had a lovely lunch at Butterfly. I had the thanksgiving sandwich and my husband had had the club. They where massive well and so tasty. The lovely person who served us was friendly and accommodating. We will be back.

Ohh amazing. So close to my home too. What a gem of a place. Everything just brilliant. The service,food and atmosphere I will never forget. The prices were fantastic too. Definitely will be going there again and again and again. Thanks for having us there. ❤️❤️❤️

I’ve been here several times before but after the last visit I wouldn’t rush back. The place is scruffy, we were sat next to some pictures on the walls which were covered in cobwebs. Granted it was busy, we queued outside which was to be expected but once we were seated the service wasn’t the best. We waited 30 minutes for our drinks and as the food was being served I had to ask if the drinks were ready yet. My partners food order wasn’t correct but after the time we had waited we honestly couldn’t be bothered to ask for a replacement. This restaurant used to be the place to go for a good breakfast but it’s went massively downhill unfortunately.

Just a great atmosphere with lovely people serving lovely food. Great coffee and shakes food is really fresh tasty and huge portions (normally I struggle to finish what I order). Probably the best cafe in Newcastle

Great food, awesome atmosphere, often very busy. We arrived at around 10:15 & managed to secure one of the last available tables, by the time we left (11:40ish) a queue had formed at the door.

First time here blown away friendly staff lovely place beautiful food only criticism music was terrible this is not a complaint just constructive criticism and I will be back regardless
