If you are trying to book for Christmas day, I would recommend other restaurants in Bristol. Rang 3 times, told each time would be contacted by the end of the following week. Last year, The Merian Dublin had my details already and I was contacted for confirmation middle October. Definitely gone downhill!

Went for lunch with friends , we were the only people in the restaurant, for a Saturday I was really surprised. Eating your lunch when no one else is around is a little off putting, wondered if we had arrived close to closing time but it was 1.30 ?? I have a House salad with chicken, chicken was nice (what little of it there was) but the majority of the salad was cress; Massively overpriced, ratio of green to meat was well off, I genuinely was so disappointed. They have no draught lager which is really disappointing, did have a pint colada cocktail which was very nice but again the amount of ice to actually drink was out. I sound so hard to please but honestly I'm not, I'm obviously not their target customer but as it was SO eerily quiet in there I don't think they have manu customers. Would not ever go again. Staff were nice though so not all bad

I visited the hotel Du Vin, (Sugarhouse location, city Centre) in Bristol on May 11th this year. I visited with two other friends and we stayed for food and drinks and was served outside in the courtyard area (as per our request instead of the indoor restaurant) as it was a beautiful sunny day. Our server was a young gentleman, Grant , who was professional, attentive and very informative, nothing seemed too much trouble. We ordered a bottle of wine and some drinks and for our food We ordered the spelt risotto, the pan fried hake, the house salad with chicken, as well as some side dishes of Pommes Frites Haricot vertes and a mixed leaf salad. Our drinks included a bottle of Crowded House white wine. Some sodas (cokes) a piñapiña colada, an amaretto sour and a double Bacardi and Coke. The bill came to $183.04 but this included the food and drink service charges. Overall, we were very satisfied with the food, drinks and service we received here and we will definitely be returning when next in Bristol. I was visiting from Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and it’s always a pleasure to dine in a beautiful restaurant with great friendly service.

I had some drinks and a meal at the bar/restaurant last night with my girlfriend, and came away amazed at how good the service was. The professionalism of the staff was 5* level, but delivered in a way that made them seem really approachable and friendly. Some bars and restaurants emphasise too much on servility, to the point that they have a weird clinical feeling to them and interactions sometimes feel robotic, but I totally didn't get that from this HDV & Bistro. I'd feel equally comfortable going here for a fancy meal as I would going for a few drinks somewhere warm and comfortable after a long walk (as we did yesterday!) Special mention to Lara & Tiara who served us in the restaurant and made me feel totally at home, and Jakub who made an amazing Caipirinha even though it wasn't on the cocktail menu!

We hadn't dined at Hotel du Vin for several years so decided to eat in while staying at their Bristol hotel. There was a time that dining at a Hotel du Vin was a treat, with good (if not great) food, complemented by a brilliant wine list and sommeliers who really knew their stuff - so chatting through your wine choices were an essential part of the experience and the results never disappointed. On this evening we found the menu reasonable, with enough choice for most tastes and occasions, and the food was well presented - so no complaints in that respect. However, while you still walk past a huge wine store on entering through the bar, the wine list has shrunk to an a point where trades' description questions arise - and this is definitely no longer the Hotel of wine! In other respects we were pretty happy and our server was very friendly and helpful. Price wise I would say it was about right for the quality and presentation of food that we were served, as well as the comfortable and well appointed dining room. Just a shame that the overall dining experience now lacks the 'special touch' that their great wine list used to add in making it a real occasion (so maybe something for management to consider given the cellar is still there but sadly empty)

Excellent staff - particularly Gosha on reception - were super efficient and made us really welcome. Great location and nice bar and restaurant. The only thing marking it down a star was the slightly tired room (Junior Suite ‘Courvoisier’). Little things, easily fixed, would make it much better. Eg the lighting was gloomy and one couldn’t easily control it (one switch for bedside and sitting room lights); Carpet tired and student-digs-y; No decoration on the walls; loo seat doesn’t stay up. But overall would recommend.

We booked the night, dinner and breakfast stay and was left feeling very happy and satisfied. After a birthday celebration the night before we felt very fragile and the staff made us feel at ease and welcomed from the first minute to the last. From the no hassle early check in (we arrived at 12pm when usually its 3pm the room is available) to switching all our meals to room service nothing was a problem and we always felt looked after untill we checked out. Gosia at reception really did look after us and was warm and helpful throughout the stay. The room is a little tired and needs some slight updating but overall is still luxurious. Food was good overall especially the croque monsieur, French onion soup and the chocolate pot! Whilst all the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful Zenda deserved a special mention for helping with our room service requests. Thanks Hotel Du Vin

We wanted a nice evening out. Luckily I had a very good tasting onion soup as starter as the monkfish main course was so small in size I would have gone home hungry. Fully aware it is an expensive fish but that small??? My guess it was about 100 g and served with a small portion of good tasting vegetables, nothing else. Husband had scallops as starter and a rump steak as main course the tiny side salad was another £4.80 extra the small portion of carrots another £5 and the sauce also came at an extra cost. For the stiff price of the slightly tough steak (can happen) more than a small portion of fries should be included. The most shocking revelation when the bill arrived was that a bottle of alcohol free sparkling wine that costs less than £6 retail was sold to us at a hefty £28. We should have asked prior. I know that electricity prices are steep but turning the light down so your customers need to use their mobile phones to read the menu, really? At times I thought I was in a concert due to the amount of torches turned on. Other drinks we had a coffee and a mocktail Our bill was £165.

I attended a large group meal upstairs at the Hotel du Vin. My scallops starter was excellent and so was the 50-day aged grain fed Sirloin Steak main course; dessert was unexciting but overall an excellent meal in a nice, interesting, venue. I always find it a real test of a restaurant when they can turn out high quality food, efficiently, for a large group of people, whilst also ensuring that everyone’s glass was never empty (unless they wanted it to be!).

The food was obviously not fresh.it had been reheated that evening. The cassoulet was mainly made of tomato sauce, hardly any beans, poor quality meat mainly fat and no chicken. The toast turkey that looked like a rillette, was tasteless and the vegetables had been sitting around for hours. Very dry. The pommel fritte were not pomme fritte they were skinny fries. Also it was really cold in the restaurant. A very disappointing meal that was very expensive. Definitely won’t go back

My wife and I booked a table at the Bristol restaurant for Sunday lunch. When we arrived, we were greeted with both friendly and welcoming staff. We were shown to our table and our order taken by Tiara who made us feel special. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Our choice was for the Sunday lunch of roast beef, we were not disappointed. The lunch was perfection to say the least, succulent beef and lovely vegetables. To follow my wife had a creme Brule and I had the apple and blackberry crumble. Both were to die for and generous helpings too. Tiara was thoughtful enough to recognise that we needed time in between courses to allow some digestion. We came this evening for a last treat before lockdown and was left underwhelmed and wishing we’d gone elsewhere. As a high end establishment it was certainly lacking. There were 4 of us and I asked twice for cutlery and a napkin as the table was only set for 3.Prawn starter was tasty but didn’t come with a finger bowl.Snails were bland and tasteless.Ribeye was cooked to perfection but freezing cold along with the cold fries???For £30 for a steak I expected more than this.Don’t think we will return as as you can imagine the bill for 4 wasn’t cheap, we can afford it but expect quality for our money and this is not what we received.

THE GOOD: - Quality and presentation of food is good - Service is friendly and efficient - Excellent wine list and a good sommelier - Position is central and convenientBUT: - Overpriced for what you get compared to comparable quality elsewhere. - Very small menu, with about 25% of the dishes unavailable that night, leaving inadequate choice. - Seafood risotto was excellent texture and flavour, but with an unforgivably mean amount of seafood (2 prawns, 2 mussels, 1 scallop and 3 tiny clams). - No offer of a dessert menu, so potential sales lost. - Although supposedly open till 11pm it was clear the staff were waiting to go home as the place was empty and we were given our bill without asking for it. We left long before we had intended, so more drinks orders also lost.Overall it's probably an ok place for a large group get-together on a busy evening, but for one or two couples on a quiet night, frankly not.

The food service however, was slow at best, even though they seemed well staffed. I’ve worked big corporation events at hotels for years and hotel du vin offered slow service. We pre ordered about 10 weeks in advance and one person in my table had not been catered for, so they gave the person a meal they did not order, and did not give a reason why they were unable to provide pre ordered food. Overall it’s a very nice hotel. But they need to be more organised.

Absolutely superb Sunday night stay. We took advantage of a £35 a night room with a minimum spend in the restaurant of £75. We were so lucky to get a room upgrade for our anniversary and we stayed in the Meerlust suite. Room was incredibly stylish, beautiful wallpaper, roll top bath with L’occitane bath products, large walk in shower, nespresso coffee machine, two leather armchairs. Bed was super comfy and lighting was subtle. We ate early, pre show, and had the chateaubriand and wine deal, such good value for money, the steak, bottle of wine, fries and a side (we went for spinach) and two sauces all for £65 for the two of us. Steak cooked perfectly as ordered. The receptionist was great he showed us to the room and remembered our name the following morning. Currently looking at the next time we can go back and would absolutely recommend if you are in the city.

My parents and their friends recently stayed at the hotel. I felt it was very important to thank the very attentive staff especially Bory and Val who looked after my dad after a fall in the town. They helped my dad with some first aid and signposted him to the local walk in centre. Thank you very much from my parents and I for being so caring it really meant a lot. He has fully recovered now and wouldn’t hesitate to stay at the hotel again

A bit off main track in centre but worth a detour and booking for people in the know.excellent food and wines, superior to the recently taken over by same chain Avon Gorge Hotel. As you would expect excellent wine list. Great old fashioned bar to relax in and dining room

Waiters were great.. we had 2 birthdays and they were looked after amazingly.. little treat cake with happy birthday written on the plate in chocolate.. and a glass of bubbly for them! Made them feel special! They lit our candles and brought our birthday cakes out. Disappointed there were no scotch eggs that we seen at the other hotel de vin in Clifton. My husbands favorite! We had an unfortunate seat looking at the fire exit doors.. but everything else was smashing. Thank you

My niece booked a table for 14 for her birthday meal. She had been there on a Sunday befor and enjoyed it. So we had high expectations. Unfortunately, we were all very, very disappointed and five of our party left in disgust as the service was so poor. It was a Wednesday early evening. We were the only ones in the restaurant so assumed service would be good. When taking our orders they ran out of fishcakes from the fixed price menu, we only ordered five. The gin cured salmon was also off the menu so not standard smoked salmon was substituted, totally different dish. The poussin was also off the menu so ordinary chicken breast was substituted. Not a very good start. The staff looked bored and could not explain why everything was taking so long, especially as we had booked. Some of our party left as it took ages for the food to come and they had three children. People who came in after us got served and this was also very annoying. We stuck it out but the fishcakes were only so-so and the sauce/samphire was very salty. The lamb tasted nice but was a small portion. The mashed potato was tasteless and watery. The only dish that was ok'ish was the gnocchi for the vegan in our party. The menus differed slightly to the advertised menu on their website. None of our party would ever return there again and it is definitely not good value for money, over-priced for what it is or purports to be. There was no ambience at all. My niece was so disappointed as we all were. Worst birthday meal to date.

So my niece booked a table 3 weeks ago for her birthday. A group of 10. We began to order only to find out half the menu had been sold out. We then order substitute orders, which again some where sold out and some only one left. After going through again and replacing orders. The starters still did not arrive for the next 45 minutes. One of the starters on the kids menu is fresh berries. 45 minutes to prepare fresh berry’s?. Very disappointing to know the table had been booked and they hardly had any food. Never will I step foot in that place again.

We stayed in the Hotel du vin for two nights in August. Everything was perfect the moment we walked in the door. The receptionist was very friendly, efficient and informative. She showed us to our rooms where we were not disappointed. Large room, ample bathroom, fantastic shower and large roll top bath. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. In the morning we took breakfast in the restaurant. I had the full English, couldn't fault it. The buffet had plenty of choice, fresh fruit, hams, cheeses, home made granola, pastries and yogurts.

My sister and her husband and I were out for the evening before my return to Australia. Rarely do you find such excellent service in rural England. (By rural I mean outside of London). This restaurant was excellent. Informed advice about wine, ability to accommodate dietary variations and sensitivity to timing of service.

Arrived to celebrate our wedding anniversary! Service first class but the noise levels are unbelievable - not a place to go to say “I love you” or “ Will you marry me?” Choose a more quiet and intimate venue. The soup, starter and my beef excellent! But it was obvious that no one in management reads “ Trip advisor” as on numerous occasions people mention the minimalist vegetable servings as very mean. 2 half potatoes each! Nor was anyone keeping an eye on the buffet as many dishes needed re filling.

Wonderful afternoon tea - great food, bottomless champagne all at an awesome price! Georgia treated us so well and gave our birthday girl a cocktail of her choice. Nice peaceful setting in Central Bristol. Philameena also explained the whole afternoon tea to us with great detail. All in all a wonderful experience. The people made it. Thank you!

My wife and myself are both retired and really enjoy trying new venues for a nice lunch. Today we chose Du Vin Bristol. It was absolutely lovely in every way. Firstly so incredibly easy to park right outside the hotel in the centre of busy Bristol. Secondly the lovely welcoming staff from the guy on reception to Philomena the lovely bubbly young lady that looked after us in the restaurant. She was a 'breath of fresh air' and so so attentive. Thank you Philomena ! We opted for the fixed price lunch menu which is maybe a little limited but exceptional value for such beautifully presented freshly made to order tasty dishes. Both starters and main course selections were way above what one would normally expect for the very reasonable price. All this was presented and served by lovely staff in a relaxed ambience quiet traditionally furnished dining room only meters from the busy main road. Almost bizarre. We live just out of town in the Cotswolds but rest assured whenever we fancy an excellent lunch in the city Du Vin will be our first choice. This is indeed a little gem which on the day we visited there was absolutely nothing not to like. Thank you Du Vin and Philomena for a lovely lunch. See you soon !

Been here to eat a few times and always enjoyed the food and service but I'm afraid last night it was very average. The tiger prawn starter was quite tasty but when the chataubriand was brought to the table we where very underwhelmed just two and a half pieces of meat each admittedly it was well cooked but tiny. We will not be rushing back.

Really really average food. The roast was just boring: the veg was tasteless, the meat portion was small, the Yorkshire was burnt and we only had two tiny potatoes each. I was expecting so much more for the price - cauliflower cheese maybe? Or y’know, maybe a herb or two so the veg tastes of something other than the water it was boiled in. We were in a rush to leave so I didn’t notice we’d been charged £4.80 for half a pint of Heineken until after we left. Definitely not returning.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights on the way back to London. We were so glad we chose this place. From my first chat with the lovely Jane at reception who was ever so helpful, warm and welcoming, I just knew this was going to be good. She personally helped us with our luggage to our room & gave us a run down of all the facilities. It was a spacious room with fairly high ceilings, comfy leather chairs by French double doors opening up to a balconette. A beautiful old wooden writing desk & bedside drawers. The lighting was warm & cosy. The room even had its own coffee maker which I was very impressed by. Fresh milk in the bar fridge with bikkies to munch on. The best bit was the huge en-suite - which had a claw foot bath, behind which was a huuuuge shower with a rain shower. The toiletries were really nice too & unique.

The building is interesting, the welcome and service was good, the food ok but not standout. The thing that ruined it somewhat was the large group party that kinda took over both in noise levels and in their drain on service, which menat like the smaller parties like us suffered.

Pros Staff: Great Wine: the only good point, great selection of wines. Cons Food: We had Onglet and Vongole pasta, it wasn't sophisticated at all and poor taste. Venue: The walls are dirty with food stains...and there is barely enough light. I'd recommend a glass at the bar instead of the restaurant.

Monday lunchtime and the bistro was inexplicably empty. As my host put it sadly, people don’t have real lunches these days. I am grateful that my host and friend is still a believer. We both had the set menu - nothing special but no disappointments. Service by an Eastern European woman and Sicilian man was first rate. The room is lovely; fitting exactly in Georgian Bristol. Not exciting, but “correct” in every way.

Great food, can’t work out why it’s not on more people’s radar, the Chateaubriand is amazing and good value compared to a lot of steak restaurants in Bristol. We eat out a lot and enjoy trying all the new and interesting restaurants but always come back here, consistency is hard to achieve in most places but not here. We look forward to our next visit.

It should have been lovely. They remembered to ask if they could take our coats - always a good start. But then, were the only people there and had to ask twice for the music to be turned down. But being the only clients destroyed any sense of atmosphere. The food was nice but not outstanding and the mash with the pigs cheek looked as if it were from a packet.

Went for a roast at Hotel Du Vin yesterday. The meal started well. It was £26.95 for 4 courses. The soup to start was homemade tomato, which was beautifully flavoursome and came with some freshly baked bread. Next the market table of help yourself salads, smoked and fillets of salmon, pates, homemade runny scotch eggs etc. All of these were amazingly presented and tasted wonderful. Then came the roast....the waiter had previously asked us if we wanted our beef pink or well done. The entire table asked for pink. What came out didn’t have an ounce of pinkness to it at all. We mentioned this to the waitress who apologised and sent it back to the kitchen, informing us that the chefs would send some extra pink meat out to us..the below photo is what the chefs consider extra pink. The meat also contained an awful lot of fat which we had to spend some time cutting out. The selection of vegetables was a bit poor. Plain cauliflower, some carrots and some tender stem broccoli, which we’d already eaten a lot of in the salads on the market table. The worst bit...there were enough roast potatoes to have two each the size of shown on the plate. When we complained to the waitress she went and spoke to the kitchen. The kitchen informed us that as we were a late table (3pm) they had run out of roast potatoes so could not provide any more. All they could offer us was some chips. Even the waitress agreed this was laughable, but there was nothing she could do. Dessert was also extremely disappointing, we had a lemon tart which wasn’t lemony or sharp in any way and the pastry was actually raw throughout. The creme brûlée tasted very eggy and not much creaminess to it. The cheese board was absolutely fine. We drank the house wine which was nice and the cocktails were good value. But unfortunately hotel du vin is very much style over substance.

Well that was HORRIBLE upon arrival the waitress didn’t even acknowledge us... just left us wandering around the empty room. Then when we went over to say we had a reservation she said “just sit over there” and pointed across the room. Well, first of all- £12.50 for one scone, one tiny weeney little tart and a slice of Swiss roll?!? That scandalous, but I wouldn’t mind so much if it was actually nice! The waitress didn’t even know what flavour it was when she served it to us. Then we couldn’t even slice into the scone as it was frozen- so we sent it back. Took 15 minutes to bring us new ones which were still raw!!!! Waitress didn’t even apologise to us, just put it down and walked off. The tea was cold and nobody likes a cold cuppa! She didn’t do a check back to see how things were, and we didn’t even eat anything. When I went over to the bar to pay, I told her it wasn’t a very good experience and that I should have listened to the tripadvisor reviews which say “avoid the afternoon tea” to which she just laughed and shrugged her shoulders!! Then she offered me 20% off to which I said was fine but I definitely won’t be returning, it was unacceptable and I had high expectations. So she said “ok. Don’t worry about it” and screwed up the bill .....

We had been planning on visiting Hotel du Vin for Sunday lunch for a few years, but never quite got there. So as a treat for my husbands birthday I booked us in as a family table of 6. The food was ok, the market table, part of the starter, was well stocked with lots of variety and the mains went beyond your normal roast. However, we had to ask for drinks, I have a food allergy which I had to ask about at each course, often more than once (which I was surprised at given the importance of food intolerances), the market table didn’t have labels for the dishes and there was no one to walk you through them and having had 4 courses I asked to take the cake home rather than light it in the restaurant... only to be greeted with the cake fully lit as we were gathering our bags. It’s a shame as the restaurant holds special memories for us, having dined there for wedding anniversaries... I don’t think we will be heading back for our next.

Our group of 10 visited The Colosseum for the Bottomless Jazz Brunch on Saturday at midday. The experience included 90 minutes of tapas dishes such as chorizo, patatas bravas, and padron peppers, all delicious. The brunch also included unlimited Aperol Spritz, Prosecco, Sangria, and Pimm’s. We were seated outside near the brilliant jazz band, who played a range of standards, which created a really lovely atmosphere. The portion sizes were generous, and the staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring our drinks were topped up regularly. The price is reasonable for the amount and quality of food and drink offered. One point for consideration by management would be improving the acoustics inside the restaurant, as it can get quite harsh on the ears during peak times. Overall, we had a fantastic time and will definitely be returning.

My friend and I had Saturday lunch in this pub and we thoroughly enjoyed it. My friend has several food allergies, so we are sometimes limited to where we can go, but the pub was super catering to her needs. We had a lovely conversation with the bar manager, Emily, who gave us recommendations for things to do in Bristol while we were staying there. Would highly recommend the pub if you’re swinging by Bristol!
