Romantic and elegant Hotel du Vin is always perfect for a date night, so this year we decided to celebrate Valentine's Day there. Despite being busy, service and food was excellent. Our waiting staff took time to make sure we were ok, recommend wines to accompany our dinner, and our Valentine's dinner was incredible. We opted for the king prawns and scallops, followed by the (always incredible) Chateaubriand - would definitely recommend!

No.

Only thing I would change would be to leave teapot/coffee pot on table instead if having to wait for staff to come around offering refills. Also I asked if the uneaten cakes could be boxed to bring home. I was given roll of tin foil to wrap myself! It would be nice if the staff could have done this. Apart from that excellent service and friendly staff.

The service we received from the restaurant manager was good enough to overcome the poor food, and we actually left laughing and still feeling like we had enjoyed ourselves. I didn’t catch the managers name, but he was extremely approachable when we first called him over about the starters and from then on we felt like he genuinely cared about our feedback and that we clearly had not enjoyed a mouthful. My husband and I took a friend to the restaurant last week. The restaurant itself has a lovely atmosphere and the décor very tasteful. Sadly the food wasn't up to the standard we expected. My husband ordered the Prawns to start but was told they had ran out of them. My friend and I had the Boeuf Bourginon as our main and we have had this dish a number of times in other restaurants and it has always been as expected. However, the meat was tough and very dry and in one piece. We had to ask for a steak knife in order to cut it and more sauce to help with the dryness of the meat. My friend ordered a glass of Pinot noir which she has had before, unfortunately the 'Hotel Du Vin' did not have it in stock and she was offered another Pinot Noir and was told it was very like the one she had ordered. We had ordered these drinks before the main course and we had to ask 3 times for them, so consequently, when they did eventually arrive, we had all finished our meals and we were hoping to enjoy a glass of wine with our food. The Pinot Noir my friend had was more like a Shiraz and did not enjoy it and therefore couldn't drink it. Sadly we were all very disappointed with our meal and service.

Arrived on 18 November for a meal in the bistro. Gave our name at the bar and a waiter took our drinks order where we sitting. No further contact from the restaurant so duly proceeded to the restaurant at 7.30pm. Thought beforehand we would have been handed a menu whilst we were sitting having a pre drink but no. Our order was taken and our first courses were presented in good order. The soupe a l'oignon was very good but the salted baked beetroot whipped goats cheese was a travesty. The goats cheese, three blobs, were the size of a 10 pence piece and the two slices of beetroot made for a dreadfully presented first course for some! For the main course the Herdwick Lamb was very good but the bouillabaisse Provençal fish stew was downright dreadful. Excluding the prawn the red mullet, bream and monk fish comfortably fitted onto a tablespoon! The beef bourguignon was not what we expecting. The description was in a "Rich beef sauce" but we ended up with a circular sirloin steak with gravy and some small onions. In fairness all of the sweet courses were very good. We felt that "service" were controlling their interpretation of the menu and in truth were not in the spirit of the menu. We did intervene with the restaurant supervisor on the fish main course and she willingly brought more to the table fairly swiftly. I have booked this venue for the 18 December 2017 for a part of 7 and it is with some intrepidation that I look forward to this event. It's a pity really, with more control this could be a really good dining venue.

I have always heard great things about Hotel du Vin so my expectations were set high. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted by the maître d. She welcomed us warmly and got us settled straight away. Note, this was the first and last time we saw her. Instead there was two waiters who between themselves were looking after a half empty restaurant. We continued on to order our food. Of which the menu was extensive and I must say did look delicious. I was a little disappointed with the lighting in the restaurant however. It did create a good ambience but using a phone for a reading touch is not ideal. The starters came out swiftly and were by all accounts delicious. Decent portion control and totally worth the price paid. However for the mains this for me is where it went down hill. I had selected to have Bouillabaisse, a fish stew. What came to the table in my opinion was dissapointing. 1 small piece of the selected fish from the menu, 4 small mouthfuls in total. In contrast to the starter I received, my main was actually a hell of a lot smaller.I did not suffer in silence and made my feelings known to the waiters. The 1st one looked at me and awkwardly laughed before scurrying away. The 2nd one was apologetic and did stress that the mains were served incomplete and a side would have been recommended. Two things I want to point out here, I don't want to be told that it is served incomplete and that I need to pay 3.95 for a side to make it complete. Also when compared with the Boeuf Bourguignon (similarly priced), which people in my party did order, the fish stew was noticeably smaller.Onto the desserts and im glad they got this right. Hefty sized profiteroles with ice cream and melted chocolate. What more could you want.A few final points to make. We had the table booked for 7pm. We were prompt on arrival and the restaurant as stated before was half empty. We didn't finish our dessert until after 9:30pm. The efficiency of service between courses left a lot to be desired. As was getting drinks orders. We had to wait at least 30 mins for one order and it would seem we only got it quicker because we impatiently asked them to hurry it up.Overall: - The food wasn't too bad and really my only quarrel is with the portion size of the main.- The service could have been better. From what I could see, there was enough staff to deal with the demand.- The ambience was pleasant. A little more lighting would personally have suited me better.I know Hotel du Vin is popular in Newcastle and has been recommended several times. I just felt overall it was quite average and not as good as the reviews and recommendations suggest. Probably wont return.

I visited last Saturday night around 8pm with a friend, we hadn’t booked but came in on the off chance there was a table free. We were shown to a table by very friendly and attentive staff. We were given time to browse the menu and drinks orders taken quickly. I was deliberating over a couple of options when they returned to take our order. The manager Lee, was very helpful and talked me through the options, with me going for the lamb shank tagine. Lee recommended a starter to suit, the Jerusalem artichoke terrines, I am so glad he did as it was really enjoyable. Once the food arrived, Lee returned to check everything was ok with the meal, he was very attentive but left us alone to enjoy our food. We ordered more drinks mid meal and he quickly returned when I caught his eye, even though he was on the go seeing to other customers. A very enjoyable night with delicious food. I would certainly recommend this place to family and friends and will be back.

A nice looking place with a nice bar area and decor but let down by the food. The tart starter was just a cold veg dish and barely edible, we had to sent it back. They gave us a free desert to compensate but not what we wanted. The rest was good but not good enough to warrant the price.

We ate here with our godson and his wife when meeting their newborn for the first time. The management gave us a discreet table where the baby could be fed and from which she could easily be taken out if unsettled but fortunately the subtle lighting and gentle buzz from the other tables lulled her to sleep for almost the entire meal. The food was imaginative, precisely cooked and imaginatively presented and service was attentive without being intrusive. Overall ideal for our needs.

I do love their eggs benedict or royale. There is everything you could require on the cereal, fruit table although my wife thinks they've stopped doing their own muesli which she adored. If we are in town we tend to eat out but on this occasion dined in house which was very good. Fear another visit reasonably soon!

Restaurant was quite and very nicely presented, large party in a separate room but did not slow down service at all. Staff were very attentive and friendly.Steak and Fries was very good ad a great size portion, chocolate bombe was good but caramel ruined it as it was so solid/thick you couldn't eat it.

My wife and I were treated to a Sunday Lunch for our 50th wedding anniversary and we were pleasantly surprised with the surroundings and the excellent service levels. The lunch consisted of soup (which was only luke warm), a help yourself buffet course (which was excellent), a main course (where my wife's beef was a bit tough) and a dessert (which was average at best).Despite the few negatives we found this a lovely place for a Sunday dinner treat and will be back.I would hope to get a better parking spot next time though, as it was quite difficult to reverse out of the small badly designed car park in the narrow space between the two rows of cars.

We were looking forward to Afternoon Tea here at £22.50 per person we were expecting it to be something really nice and we were using our visit as a tester for returning for my mum's 80th birthday with family and friends. The menu is a set menu but they ask if you have any dietary requirements. We both said we don't like salmon (salmon was one of the items) but would be happy with tuna or an alternative. The pots of hot tea arrived, then 5 minutes later the waiter arrived with two plates of sandwiches / savoury things on them (one each for my husband and I) and put them on the table, then walked away. To see what they were, we looked at the menu. We then noticed that the salmon served with a dressing and cucumber and a on dark rye bread, had been replaced with, dressing and cucumber on dark rye bread. Very nice of them to remove the salmon! The egg mayo (served on a brioche finger bun) was dry. The bun certainly wasn't fresh and half the bun had no filling. The mini croissant with ham and cheese was nice, as was the other item (even though we didn’t know what it was). Next came the sweet items. Two nice warm scones served with jam and cream said the menu. We got scones, with jam and marmalade but no cream. We were also served a Gin & Tonic sorbet which had a cream topping, so we used the cream of those for the scones. The sweets also had a rhubarb & custard mini donut, a mini chocolate teacake and a mini lemon meringue pie. The donut was like a gold ball, in appearance and texture. (Only the colour could separate them). The lemon meringue pie had a soggy bottom, and the chocolate teacake was just a soft mush. The final thing was a candy floss. The ones shown on the menu looked lovely, however the ones that arrived were about ¼ the size. All in all, we were very disappointed.

We signed up for a recent offer for 2 courses and prosecco. Beautiful situation and have stayed in hotel before. When we arrived there was a distinct lack of staff and had to wait ages for a drink but after that staff were attentive and helpful. Food was good but set menu was a bit random with a lot of ingredients repeated in both courses. Not sure would have set menu again but had a pleasant evening.

Dined at hotel du vin while staying at the Malmaison nearby, had high hopes and these were met. The layout is attractive, with an open kitchen and several antechambers well stocked with wines from all over the world. We chose a bottle of Italian Gewürztraminer which was gorgeous and a very decent price. The host was welcoming and easy to chat to, very professional. Our waiter Luke was appropriately chatty and very knowledgeable about the menu; he clearly has a passion for food and service. We both had the salmon classic to start and I had the porterhouse while my friend had a fillet. All of the food was wonderful, I couldn't find a single fault. The restaurant and, moreover, the staff are a credit to the brand. I had a wonderful evening.

We could not have chosen a better place to celebrate a graduation. Our meal was absolutely delicious with a number of stand-out dishes, such as the smoked salmon starter with quails' eggs, beef carpaccio, fantastic fillet steak and baked cod, and a quite outstanding cheese board. The accompanying wines were special too: a wonderfully fresh provencal rose, a gorgeous Portuguese red and dessert wines to die for - not only Tokaji (which you expect to be good) but an extraordinary chocolatey, chewy tannat from Uruguay which will linger long in the memory. Service was charming, friendly and enthusiastic. The sommelier is a character (in a good way) and knows some extraordinary wines. Cannot recommend highly enough. It may have been the standard HdV menu but was none the worse for that. It's not cheap (the wines mount up), but it is worth every penny for a special occasion.

Great food again for the 4 of us (rib eye was a little over seasoned).Took kids for graduation dinner and weren't disappointed. Nice atmosphere without too much background noise. Great selection of wines (and only charged £15 corkage on 1990 chateau Margaux which was bargain!)Only criticism was the delightful waiters need some more training to watch the tables for empty glasses, topping up and removing pre dinner drink glasses from table. Plus they need smarter dress code. Overall we loved it!

Booked for a wine tasting experience in the Victoria Tunnel and also evening meal to follow. The Wine Tasting as a great experience and the tunnel tour most interesting.Evening let down however by the meal. Luke, our waiter was very friendly and attentive, however the main menu looked very expensive and so we chose from the fixed price menu.Starters were pretty average then I chose burger and my wife a chicken dish. The burger was average and came with frozen French Fries, chicken dish did say Roast Chicken with salad so thought the chicken would be hot, but it was not and so basically a chicken salad - more a lunch than dinner.Bill came and Service Charge was already added on which I always think is a cheek. I always tip and would have done so here. Anyway gave cash over but no change appeared even after waiting for some time until our lift arrived. All in all a mixed night, let down by average food which was very expensive.

Plus points: - Amazing savouries - different types of bread as well as a small quiche, all of which were very tasty. - The savouries were brought out first, and we had a small break before the scones & sweet treats were served. This worked well & stopped us from getting full too quickly.- Some lovely sweet treats - the lemon meringue tart was delicious.- Very friendly & attentive service- Relaxed surroundings.Areas where improvements can be made: - Scones were served with whipped cream instead of clotted cream. Afternoon tea is not right without clotted cream, so this was a little disappointing!- Scones did not taste fresh. Mine was quite crispy as if it had been warmed up - the bottom was almost biscuit like- Doughnuts did not taste fresh either, were quite stodgy & only had jam inside, not rhubarb & custard as advertised.- The gin & tonic sundae tasted more like a lemon sorbet, albeit a delicious one.I couldn't help but compare what we got to what was advertised in the afternoon tea menu. Care needs to be taken to serve what is advertised as that is what you expect. We enjoyed the afternoon tea, but a few changes would have made it amazing!

Stayed at the hotel for the whole week and due to bad weather dined at the restaurant 3 times. The first night the food was OK (salt baked beetroot followed by a rack of lamb) and the service of average level, but I ignored it.The second night the service was brilliant and the food was a bit of a mix (the starter chicken liver parfait lacked the flavour, but the main sea bass was beautiful). The last night.. unfortunately, not so great. Asked for a medium rare fillet steak (at a whopping price of £29.50) and a side of parmentier potatoes. Unfortunately, what I've got was a lump of charcoal with slightly pink middle (more than 2cm either side of the steak was completely overcooked beyond being able to cut through with a knife with a tiny bit in the middle what could be classed medium rare, but more on the medium side). Before ordering it, I thought in my head - fillet is normally a foolproof choice, which is difficult to overcook - it seems I was wrong. Not only that, but apparently the steak already came with a side of potatoes (no mention on the menu), so basically I got two portions of potatoes with my steak (huh, shouldn't the serving staff question such weird client's choices?)... The waitress response to my complaint was inapproriate. She immediately started apologising and offering me tea or coffee as an apology for a bad steak, instead, she should have taken away the steak immediately and brought a new portion. Or a manager should have dealt with the situation. Paid full price for the steak. Overall, two OK experiences, one terrible, hence the average rating.

Three generations of us wined and dined at the Hotel du Vin on Sunday lunchtime. The staff were quick and extremely obliging, going out of their way to make us welcome and comfortable. They helped our two little ones to choose their meals and amended the menu slightly to keep them happy. We were treated like royalty and we relaxed and enjoyed the ambience. I very rarely leave restaurant reviews except when a restaurant either (i) far exceeds expectations and is deserving of praise and support or (ii) falls far below what is acceptable for a restaurant in its respective category and prospective customers deserve a fair warning.Unfortunately in this case it was the latter. ‎I ordered what I'd usually expect to be a safe bet, a Salad Nicoise. Personally I think it is inexcusable for a higher end restaurant to use anything but freshly cooked tuna steak for such a salad. I've been caught out before therefore I sheepishly sought to confirm with the waiter that the salad was indeed prepared with fresh tuna steak (I felt a little embarrassed to suggest that the kitchen might do otherwise...). Despite the waiter's assurances the salad arrived topped with a few flakes of cold tinned tuna... not only that, the salad leaves were old and visibly wilted and limp, the green beans virtually non existent, the boiled potatoes and egg long pre prepared and stone cold and bizarrely the salad dressing seemed to be a butter and garlic based sauce which presumably was intended for use on their grills options. To fail every element of such a basic dish leaves serious questions about the management and professionalism of the kitchen. I politely expressed my disappointment and picked my way through the salad. Regardless, I received a bill for the full whack.‎The wine and olives were good...

Have been meaning to review this place for a while having stay nearly every month for 2 years (work). Unfortunately by now only just getting around to it, the score will be considerably less.3 years ago, I would have given everything about the du Vin 5 stars, the staff were attentive, professional and knowledgeable and the food (breakfast and dinner) delicious and well presented, with a great selection of wines, whiskeys and cocktails to your taste. Now is rather, and sadly, a lot different. From the staff attire to the customer communication, everything is a little less special. The food is bland and whilst still presented well, it's often not cooked to perfection. The staff look more like work experience students than high-end quality restaurant waiters. More often than not the answer to a question is "I'm not actually sure", rarely followed by "but I'll find out for you".Thankfully the setting hasn't changed. The ambience for a nice meal is out is still great and the wine and whiskey selection is excellent for dinner drink or night cap. They just need to go back to doing things like they did before. To summarise, it's ok. But whereas before is was worth the money, I feel it no longer is and better venues have cropped up in the city centre since the "good 'ol days".

Made the mistake of ordering from the 'new' set menu. Potted ox tongue was tasteless and not worth the effort to dig out of the pot and the brisket and onion pudding was hard, salty and gross! We were hoping dessert might make up for it but after waiting 15 minutes we gave up and went to the bar to order cocktails.Obviously better service offered to the people ordering from the full menu. So if you want tasty food and good service don't dare to order from the set menu.

My girlfriend and I visited for Sunday Lunch a few weeks ago, on the spur of the moment (did not book, but now realise we were extremely lucky indeed), and enjoyed a gorgeous hidden gem of a restaurant. We chose starters of home made winter broth (Magnificent), and were invited to partake of the 'Captains table'. We were spoilt for choice as we indulged in an endless glorious display of mussels, anchovies, olives, artichoke hearts, steamed and smoked salmon, carpaccio of beef, artisan bread, pickles, mixed salad, and much much more. When the main course arrived, the roast beef was simply mouth-watering and tender, with a gigantic Yorkshire pudding and ample vegetables and luscious gravy. We will most definitely return, as soon as we can. I can not recommend this restaurant any higher.
