Called in for a quick coffee and slice of carrot cake, not actually realising this isn't part of John Lewis but is a separate concession. The coffees and cake were good and the service was ok as well but the place needs a good tidy up. There was a lot of clutter on the shelving at the back of the counter and the floor under our table needed sweeping. Maybe they were short staffed as we only saw two assistants.

My friend and I were shopping in York and dropped for lunch, the sandwiches were fresh and taste, but the best thing was the hot chocolate I had the salted caramel, the hot Chocolate was thick and yummy topped with a light airy chocolate mousse sprinkled with a crisp topping. Not just a drink it's a drink and desert all in one good sized cup The cafe offers a nice space for friends or business meeting

I called in on Sunday for a nice drink whilst shopping with my girlfriend. The place was relatively busy, but plenty of room, we ordered our drinks, and as soon as we received our receipt, we were told that the place closed in 20 min, no prior warning to this.so that was quite irritating. We sat down to a dirty table, the only clear one that wasn't being used. and then when we received our drinks the fabulous hot chocolate was missing the chocolate cream on top (which you have to pay extra for) I checked with the staff member at the till and she in formed me that we hadn't asked or paid for the cream, so I sat down assuming I was wrong. but checking our receipt we had actually paid for it, so I had to go and ask for it. It was 4pm on a Sunday and john lewis shut at 5pm, but you could tell by the staff that they wanted to get home, and were not particularly helpful or accommodating. I dont think we will be going back in a rush.

Visited on a very busy Sunday morning. Fast efficient service. Chose the 100% hot chocolate which tasted excellent but was £3.50 for the regular, which was really quiet small. Would visit for a treat.

First visit to Hotel Chocolat cafe. It is self service but once we had collected our drinks there was no table to sit at which hadn't been cleared or cleaned. There weren't many customers in so there were plenty of seats. We sat outside , the drinks were ok but felt disappointed and wished we had gone to the John Lewis cafe.

We have tried Hotel Chocolat a couple of times now, always latish on in the day but have been pleasantly pleased by the warm welcome the staff always give my wife and myself. The coffee is excellent, lovely flavour and always hot enough, as well as our Americano we tried the White Chocolate Frappe this time, defiantly to be recommended as are the scones which are served with butter and a small jar of jam (strawberry or raspberry). Nice surroundings and as we have been when it is late plenty of room, no feeling of being rushed and the staff always check that everything is OK.My only criticism is they do not serve on plates, everything seems to be served on a small wooden tray. I would prefer a plate, but that is probably me being old fashioned. Minor point and it will certainly not stop us going back again.

Wow! Yesterday we sampled Afternoon Tea for two at Hotel Chocolat at Monks Cross York. This place is a favourite of ours because the coffee is the best in town and the staff are so lovely. The afternoon tea is to be recommended! It's full and generous, the food is tempting and gorgeous, and is delivered with the characteristic signature, innovative twist, of Hotel Chocolat. Our advice is, dive in there, give it a go, spoil yourselves!

Hot chocolates very expensive and not high in quality, I prefer the high street brands unfortunately. Very slow service, drinks were cold. Lots of seating squashed into a small area so you feel very much on top of the people around you.Tables dirty. Pots everywhere. Other choices in the area so Avoid.

We found this place by chance and had THE best hot chocolate ever!! Note to anyone visiting. Do not go large unless you have good chocolate tolerance. It's too sickly. DO HAVE THE CHOCOLATE WHIP. Definitely worth the 50p extra. Could be cleaner. Some tables still cluttered despite three staff being on duty and few people being in the cafe but that's our only complaint. Oh and please hotel chocolat bring one of these closer to Manchester. I hear the trafford centre would be an excellent location ;)

I Went in on a saturday morning at around 10.40 and spotted a sign for chocolate porridge. When it came to us being served eventually, the server took the sign down (ha) and said they weren't serving porridge anymore because it was past 10.30 and because there had been two of them on they didn't have chance to take the sign down. Okay so on to the server. Claire i think it was...! Claire was rude and didn't smile once during the whole transaction, basically claire just wished we never walked in to Hotel Chocolate. I dont get it at all! You shouldnt make people feel unwanted in somewhere which aims to make money! My coffee was burnt ( the milk) and bitter. Cafe is so small it is literally not worth a visit when busy. The prices are so expensive too!!Just a tip - dont have people who clearly are not morning people working on a morning shift, it doesnt brighten anyones day at all.

Hotel Chocolat is within the John Lewis store on the ground floor at Monks Cross York. The staff are really friendly and helpful always. The coffee is superb, and it's definitely the best in York. We sometimes chat there with a Michelin Chef who often drives forty miles to HC just for the coffee and the lovely vibe.We love this place. Thanks to Erica and Team, who make the coffee/chocolat experience so special.

Really looking forward to this visit as we love their chocolate. Really disappointed with the experience. I ordered cappuccino, I know it isn't chocolate but I expected a delicious drink. What a let down. Hardly any froth on the coffee which immediately melted into the only warm coffee. Not much taste to coffee, will not be returning as Cafe Nero in a nearby store is excellent for taste, presentation and friendly staff. My daughter had a hot chocolate which she enjoyed but said was a bit disappointing considering the cost. Staff could do with more training as the girl who served us licked her fingers during making the hot chocolate, yuk.

On a recent visit to Vanguard Centre we took the opportunity of having a coffee and cakes at this tiny cafe in the corner of John Lewis. The selection of cakes were limited and expensive but the drinks were reasonably priced. However the cafe is rather tatty with tape covering defects in the floor surface. The tables are small and there is a danger that others will feed off your plate!I doubt whether we will bother again

This is a nice, albeit small, cafe with some very good cakes - scone and rocky road are excellent, as are millionaire's shortbread and brownie. The soup and bread I found rather unpleasant, but my wife liked it, so perhaps it's just a matter of taste!I'd avoid the cocoa tea, but the Earl Grey is very good. Nice staff too.

I went here with a friend looking for tea and a nice piece of cake - something we thought would be easily achieved in a chocolate speciality cafe. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful and we enjoyed the visual look and atmosphere of this cafe, however, the cake selection was pitiful, and it wasn't late in the day when you might expect stocks to be deplenished - I had given them a couple of chances in case this was a fluke, however sadly my experience has been reinforced. If you just fancy a beverage and want to soak in the atmosphere, then I would still very much recommend a visit, just don't hold out too much hope for a delightful chocolaty treat.

This was our first visit to the cafe - I came with my 7 year old daughter and mother - and we would definitely come again. A beautiful smell of hot chocolate, cappachinos and...chocolate!! The drinks were lovely and hot and the ham and cheese sandwich was fresh and very tasty, a pleasant experience as we arrived around half past 4. Excellent service too, our tray was carried to our table for us by a staff member! Overall, a lovely, clean and well set up cafe with a lovely ambience!

A nice place in York to escape the hustle and bustle. Staff and managers are very pleasant and coffee and cakes delicious. The coffee is always presented nicely however at busy times it can be hard to find a clear table, the cafe and tables are clean.

This is a new so called bar cafe in a modern new development in York. Based within John Lewis it had the potential to be good BUTThe drinks were cold and tasteless (they should have been hot!!)The pastries were dull. And the staff were total amateurs.Add on a huge price tag and you will understand why we won't be going there again...

being chocolate lovers we couldn't resist popping in. i had a mocha, wife a salted caramel hot chocolate and bot of us had a slice of chocolate brownie. we both enjoyed it. i would say it doesn't have as much bling as we would have hoped, i think going to a hotel chocolate cafe should be more of an experience, plus i generally have an issue with buying coffees as it is, no matter where we go! so overall nice enough just nothing special.

Called in for coffee expecting something special. Not to be. My latte came in a small handleless cup with too much froth. The coffee had little flavour and was not very hot. Value for money was very poor. I would have had a better cup at any of the other well known coffee chains.

Handy for John Lewis customers and with access to an outdoor seating area - looked quite inviting on a warm, sunny day in York.Sadly the service proved to be glacially slow on a relatively quiet day, which allowed us time to realise how much we disliked their choice of music. Drinks arrived in mugs with no handles, so you can expect to burn your fingers on the first few sips....Coffee and hot chocolate turned out to be distinctly average - didn't return for lunch and instead went to the nearby Caffe Nero, where the staff were motivated, upbeat, helpful and proactive - and even more importantly served great coffee and good food :)

Sadly the staff were bordering on rude , especially the lady who appeared to be in charge . There was a tiny space to wait for a table. As I was on my own , the table which had been cleared for me by one of the other staff was not given to me and I was pit at a table next to a door where children were attending a private party. I wanted to order soup but was told it would be ½ hour. Not sure why that would be as it said soup was available from 12 noon and it was simply a case of putting some in a bowl ! This , coupled with a frosty atmosphere was enough to make me leave. There were 3 staff working in thr seating area yet there were uncleaned tables and lots of people who were clearly waiting to order . Sadly , I decided I wasn't particularly welcome and I decided to leave.

Popped in for a bite before work and noticed that it was filled with dirty tables which made me want to take away as i went to get my tuna sandwich i noticed a pair of scissors just lying there as i gave it to the guy working he looked completely clueless, once my food was cooked they picked it up with their hands!! and just shoved it in the packaging so when it came to eating it, most of the tuna and cheese was stuck to the top and it was not enjoyable. I wish I went back to complain and get my money back but I just didn't have time by then

Popped in as I honestly was desperate for the toilet. I noticed they had a cafe so was very happy to purchase something or even grab a cute little gift on my way out. I was immediately bellowed at across the room by a scary looking woman who said ‘we don’t have public toilets, that is what you’re looking for isn’t it?’ I said that I was but I was happy to purchase something too (I totally understand business owners view on this however it is a ladies time of the month, I was desperate and I verbalised that I was willing to purchase something too). She told me that I was a liar and I wouldn’t buy anything and clearly wasn’t going to tell me where the toilet was so I used the disabled quickly (no one else was around). I said that it was disgusting to deny another person the human right to use the bathroom. SHE TOLD ME THAT I WAS DISGUSTING!!! Wow. I used the bathroom and calmly came out saying that I had full intentions of buying something and as I’m from a small historic town myself, I’m more than happy to support local businesses. She proceeded to aggressively tell Me that I wasn’t going to buy anything so feeling intimidated I left. To which she followed me to the door, then started taking photos of our car through the window. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! VILE
