horse & jockey in Wakefield

Being from out of town and cat sitting for the week we thought we would sample some of the pubs of Normanton. All good until we entered The Horse & Jockey. After the first drink the barmaid was sitting outside the bar chatting to the local ‘clientele’ when I went to ask for another drink and she already looked like I was putting her out … she short measured 2 large wine by quite a bit so as I was paying I asked politely if she could top them up to the line … she pulled a huffy face and took the glasses back to put more in. I said it’s not too much to ask is it and she didn’t even acknowledge me then just put the two glasses back on the bar without looking at me …. they were still short of the line but I just assumed she must be short sighted at that point. Then we had to put up with one of the locals bashing the fruit machine right by us (in the quietest area of the pub) while shouting back to his mates by the bar (including the stroppy barmaid who had returned to them) because he wasn’t winning … we didn’t eat there and after seeing the state of the apron on the ‘cook’ I wouldn’t dare … he looked like he’d been butchering meat for the sausage and burgers in the back of the pub!

Went here to catch up with an old friend and it was the loveliest pub. Really friendly staff that all said hello, locals seems really nice too. Had amazing food and the chef came out and asked how it all was. Would highly recommend here. We had a great time.

Ate here last night. Warm and welcoming staff. Land lord was a top bloke. Food came out super quick and was amazing. Next level burger and fries. Super imaginative and very well executed. Highly recommended 👌 👍 👏

Brilliant night at open mic every 1st Thursday in the month. Went with 3 friends, one a brilliant musician and singer/songwriter. Heard some great music, had a good drink very reasonably priced, and thoroughly enjoyed the proper pub atmosphere. Will be going regular from now on

Thank you for a lovely, warm welcome on Christmas day. Our children was given free chocolate Christmas treats, big smiles & good atmosphere. Keeping the community together at all ages! Thanks Guys 🤟 first time to a pub on Christmas day, wasn't disappointed 🥰

Very unfriendly atmosphere, sadly disturbed Christmas decorations and not serving food, good job a lovely fish shop next door! Never again.

Looks great after the refurb! Busy on the Saturday night that I visited. Worth a visit, but 1 downside, there's no real ale on offer.

What a lovely pub called in just for a drink ,but the people on the next table had ordered food and it looked great so we ordered two burgers and coated fries It was a good decision the food was excellent. Will be back

WOW... don't go if you want ordinary. The food from the Bridgetown Canteen team is far from ordinary, it's exceptional. We went for pie night and it's was simply stunning. Can't wait til our next visit to try their other dishes.

We went here for pie night as it was recommended and it didn't disappoint the food here was amazing, the pies are freshly hand made all fresh ingredients and taste delicious, if you like pie then this really is the place to go on pie night.

Great traditional & authentic local pub serving up a warm welcome & awesome burgers!

Visited on a Thursday evening for a double birthday dinner & was extremely impressed by everything. Bar selection & bar staff extremely good. A large amount and different selection of food was ordered which was served promptly and efficiently. Well done to the chef and staff for making a very pleasant experience, will definitely be returning.

We decided to order from Bridgetown Canteen at the horse and jockey, as always it did not disappoint. I've been in to sample the menu here quite a few times now and it's always exceptional. A large group of us decided to order for our night shift at the hospital following my recommendation and everyone loved it! We ordered a wide section from the menu including burgers, loaded fries and a few kebabs, none of which you'd consider a normal takeout. There are even some great choices for vegans! Everything is high quality food cooked to perfection. It's very clear to see the chef has dedicated a lot of time and effort to ensure that each dish is unique and has a perfect balance of texture and flavour. The menu is ever changing and developing, there have been some amazing curries to grace our table, awesome kebabs and the recent start of the "pie" nights is out of this world, bringing a new lease of life to pub grub. I would highly recommend this place, lively atmosphere from the pub and amazing food on the table.

Fantastic pub that's dog and child friendly and really welcoming. Great selection of beer including, Madri, Peroni and Beavertown Neck Oil! If you order a madri you even get a glass from the freezer which is a nice touch. The food is provided by the bridge town canteen, the food is absolutely amazing! We have been several times now and tried numerous items on the menu they are all so unique, fresh and unbelievably tasty. The chef is top class. Must visit it in Normanton.

Amazing food from Bridgetown Canteen who serves at the Horse and Jockey in Altofts, we have been several times now and tried a few items on the menu, out of this world, the taste of each dish is unique in its own, i don't think you can get better pub grub locally that quick, good value and no fuss! The chef continuously changes up the menu to see what works for the clientele and what doesn't. Also available on just eat which is a great takeaway option over your usual Chinese or curry etc. Our children are welcome in the pub at lunch time to play pool and watch sports on T.V, good selection of drinks too.

The staff are very obliging and attentive when you approach the bar,the atmosphere is superb and the new décor is fantastic. Tha manageress has grasped the situation and delivers on customer service by miles and with a smile, recommend to give it a visit and you will not be disappointed.

Great to see that Altofts now has one decent pub at the top end of the village to compliment the two in lower Altofts. Can't wait to try the food. Not given 5 stars because my drink of preference is real ale and unfortunately this isn't available here as per the Wagon and Horses when I visited. I'd have thought there would be enough demand for at least one pump serving a popular real ale such as Silver King or Landlord etc. As long as it's better than the ale that tastes like canal water mixed with sheep dip, AKA Tarn 51 Ales.

Visited here with my son who has recently moved into the area as it is his local. Can totally recommend the cocktails and we had some food which we shared. Lovely atmosphere, my son has already been back and I look forward to my next visit.

Amazingly good food and value! What an astonishing find! Decided to head there as a quick family lunch for a “bottomless brunch“ one Saturday and to be honest, not expecting a lot. It was great! Food was absolutely top-notch! The tapas were delicious, the pizzas good. The cocktails full-blooded and addictive. We had the mezzo platter, followed by prawns, calamari, scallops, beef and sweet potato fries as tapas, together with a couple of pizzas between four adults and one teenager. The food was plentiful and faultless. The service was great and place was very friendly. Value for money exceptional! Rest assured, we will most certainly be back, ideally sometime soon.

Went there today 23rd 4th 2022, at around 13:45, with my 83yr old mother. We bought drinks and then had a look at the menu. We made our choices, and I went to the bar to order. Only to be told that the kitchen doesn't open 'till 5:00. Extremely disappointed. If we had known the kitchen wasn't open, then we wouldn't have bought the drinks, and would have left immediately. There appeared to be only one person behind the bar, who seemed to be running the whole place on her own. The dog treats on the bar were a nice touch. However. We will not be going back again. There wasn't any indication that there was no food available, even though we went into what looked to be the main dining area. A notice, or even a comment from the person behind the bar, would have been a good idea.

Had brunch. Lovely food. And cocktails. Well worth the money. Lovely staff. Xx

Food OK not brilliant but asked for gammon and was served it. Food was very fresh and hot when brought to table. Not asked if it was OK throughout the meal. Drinks where slightly over priced for a village pub. Bar staff and chef on mobile phones behind bar... for a village pub on a Saturday night advising Live entertainment for Saturday night but not happened at 2015. Advertise at 2000. On the menus inside. Very clean toilets mens and ladies. Just need to brush up on certain things.

Under new management, and the place looks amazing! The food is to die for and is also a good price, as well as the cocktails! Honestly amazing, would definitely go for a bite to eat and a cocktail or two (or maybe the whole menu). Cannot begin to tell you how friendly and lovely the staff are, they honestly could not do enough for you! So attentive and you can tell they actually care. Will be definitely coming again, and bringing the family too!!

Very nice Dog friendly pub. Doggy treats on bar and water offered straight away. Food served see menu pictures attached. I had a ham sandwich very nice - will visit again ....... I think I will have steak next time.

Old cosy pub with pool table but Looks tired and needs a refurb. Big car park to rear. Dog friendly. No hand pulled ales. No tonic for the gin. Don't take care payments...recently changed landlord and it has got worse since my last visit. Friendly bar lady when I visited, shame about the lack of poplar drinks!

It's a great place for a chat and and a drink plus the staff is very Friendly also nothing beats an open fire like years ago
