I visited twice on my visit back to the UK. After many recommendations to visit this lovely little tearoom. The sandwiches and scones are delicious and the afternoon tea was a delight. I took home some freshly made Cornish pasties for my husband and they were eaten with gusto. The atmosphere is cosy and inviting and they are helpful and friendly. I will definately visit again on my next trip back to the uk and will recommend to friends.

A lovely Afternoon tea for two. Plenty of fresh sandwiches, two scones each and some sweet treats but I'm sorry to say, these didn't seem home made at all which was a shame. I believe they could be 'Iceland frozen dessert range' but over all very pleasant. Small inside, which on a personal level, I find awkward because everyone can hear your conversation but thats just me. A lovely fish tank inside which kept my child happy looking at whilst we all ate!

Impromptu visit to a town I lived in for a couple of years back in the sixties. I'd read good things about the Homely Maid, so my wife and I popped in for some refreshments just before 1. Warm greeting from the young lady serving who gave us the table recently vacated. This is a compact and well laid out tearoom the has a distinct feel of 'yesteryear' - and I mean that in a positive way. Service was prompt and the menu was surprisingly full in it's variety, something to suit all palates I should imagine. Looking around at our fellow diners, most of them seemed to be tucking into a wholesome looking lunch of sandwiches, cakes and scones. We settled for the sandwiches plus scones with Jam and clotted cream with a pot of tea. Our order arrived very quickly and each item tasted freshly made. It's a long time since we've had tea made with tea leaves out of a teapot, and very good it was too. They certainly didn't scrap on the clotted cream or butter and we each had our own jam. We thought the price was very reasonable too. Just note that should you require their 'high tea', which seems to be one of their specialities, they like it ordered before your visit.

I hadn't been here for many years, but it used to be a family favourite. I ordered a coronation chicken baguette, which when it arrived appeared to be good value for money. However, the chicken appeared to have been defrosted in a microwave as some was warm, some slightly tepid and some cold, and it had a generally bland and insipid taste. Needless to say I didn't eat it all then lo and behold I was ill for 4 days with salmonella poisoning. Such a shame as this could be a lovely tea-rooms.

Afternoon tea was beautiful and plentiful. Ladies in there were amazing! I did my usual last minute lightbulb idea and asked if a second afternoon tea could be made for a temporarily immobile relative as a get well pressie (much better than grapes!) We were gifted an afternoon tea in The Homely Maid and felt very pleased with our gift when it was placed before us today. A lovely tearooms which I have reviewed before but now feel that I should further recommend, as this was our first visit for afternoon tea. All was presented very prettily and to say that the food was plentiful is an understatement. We began quite hungry and finished not able to eat another thing! Ridiculous. We should have challenged this but decided not worth it as she already had a bit of an attitude problem. We popped in on the off chance with my wife and sons family. My wife wanted a cream tea (so I had one too) my son had a full breakfast (in the afternoon...) my daughter in law just had the scones and the kids had pancakes with syrup and fish fingers (not on the same plate). A small place with a sale point for bread etc, not many tables but plenty of room for our little gang. Drinks arrived first (the kids and the not so young kids, had a milk shake and we had a nice large pot of tea. All the food was very nice, our cream tea arrived in a large cake stand thing for the both of us which looked and tasted rather nice (we had a choice of sandwiches - ham and cheese and your choice of bread) and with two scones each, with the clotted cream and strawberry jam, was certainly enough for us to last the rest of the day. The staff are friendly, efficient and look the part. To top this off, not too expensive - I have been to 'posh' hotels that charge a lot more but you get less... Well worth a visit.

We ordered our tea and a snack. The waitress opted to clear tables instead of taking our order through. Eventually cups came (one wasn’t clean). Then our snacks. As I went to use the butter I notice that the pat of butter had been placed in an already used dish. We pointed this out to her. No apology, she said “I was told it was clean”

We popped in here for lunch during a week day and found it quite busy. It's a little shop on the left hand side with cakes and bread and a cafe in the bit you go in and another larger room on the right hand side of where you go in.It looks quaint from the outside and inside is very quaint too. The room where we sat was very pretty with lots of decorations and pictures and it is all beautifully done. There's a good selection on the menu and my husband loves cheese on toast - there are lots of different varieties to choose from and he had one with egg and bacon! He thought it was perfect and really enjoyed it. I tried a bit and found the taste of mustard a bit too strong for my liking but he thought it perfect!I went for something a bit unusual. I noticed there were pancakes with maple syrup and then you could also get them with either cheese or bacon, so I had the bacon ones.I had a large latte - which I loved the look of when it came - see photo and the little biscuit with it was gorgeous shortbread - really scrummy :)Hubby had a bottle of Folkington's Elderflower drink which he quite liked but he likes the Fentimans one more, which he's had elsewhere.I took a photo of the room we sat in after the people had left - so there is some crockery on the table as the young girl serving hadn't had time to clear it when I took the photo. We found the service extremely polite and helpful, a very pretty young girl served us.The prices charged here are very reasonable. The photo I took of my pancakes has some lettuce and a bit of tomato on it - this was actually served with my husbands cheese on toast but he hates salad and I love it, so it was put on my plate before I had a chance to take the photos! This is a really lovely place and we are looking forward to coming here again.

Here is somewhere you will find the old way of doing things. A little time, a few quality ingredients, and some real old fashioned cooking. Not just stuff reheated in a microwave. It's great just to sit and enjoy a conversation, without someone on a phone or a fruit machine, or just rushing in without a care as to their surroundings. Yes it is a little small and you may not always be able to get a seat straight away, but somethings are worth waiting for. Plus this is the only place for many miles around you can buy bread pudding, but yes it is worth the drive.

We visited this delightful little gem for the first time on Saturday and were not disappointed! Pretty little tearoom with dainty porcelain crockery, lovely atmosphere and smiling, happy waitress made this a pleasing experience from beginning to end. Can higly recommend the pizza baguettes, toasted teacakes and lovely pots of tea. Looking forward to going back soon to sample more of the treats on offer.

on going to the cinema in Hailsham, we decided to eat out. having tried 2 places that were full, we dropped into the Homely maid, and were made very welcome. as it was prior to Christmas the staff were dressed up. we were served by a very friendly colourful elf. nothing too much trouble. the meal was good too. will definitely visit again.

All the sandwiches were freshly made and all the sweet pastries and the scones of which you had a fruit AND A plain one to eat were absolutely fabulous.... the staff were very accommodating and really friendly....I cannot stress enough how amazing having afternoon tea here was and believe me I have been to quite a few.My Mum and I will definitely return as they also do amazing homemade lunches and specials of the day which were very reasonably priced and looked yummy.....

I visited this little cafe/tea shop in September and was really impressed. I understand from my sister who is a hailsham resident that it has been in the high street for ages but I have never visited until now. It is in a great location for some local walks around the area. It is surprisingly spacious inside and really quaint and clean. The menu is pretty big for a small place. Lots of traditional choices of sandwiches, cream teas and then some hot plates too. We had a mis of scones, sandwiches and a frittata. All were really tasty and made with really good ingredients. I would highly recommend this place.

I popped in on the off chance for a quick lunch and was very pleased to see they did Welsh rarebit as you don't see this that often I picked a buck rarebit and I have to say it was delicious. The poached eagles was perfect - cooked properly in water so was still golden and runny in the middle. The rarebit itself was also very tasty with the right blend of cheese and mustard. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive too. All washed down with a good coffee - I was very happy and will be back.

Where do I start, the staff was so so rude! The food was horrible, I wouldn't wish this on anyone!!!! The chef was having a argument on the phone? And he had a "fag" hanging out his mouth, the the lady who served me I think it was the owner wow she had a big attitude. Very rude

Visited here with a family member for some lunch. The chef was constantly on his phone "taking selfies", picking his face, not wearing gloves and i assume he wasnt washing his hands between every 'pick'. Secondly, the waitress looks like she really doesnt want to be there. Very unfriendly and tense atmosphere you could cut with a knife.I didnt think much of the food and i could probably get the same quality from a tesco meal deal for a quarter of the price.

We gave this tea shop an excellent review in January 2015. However, on a return visit today we can only rate it as terrible. No welcoming greeting whatsoever from the very sour faced waitress. When my husband asked for a decaffeinated americano she actually rolled her eyes towards the ceiling! Very ill mannered. We ordered but then decided to leave.Unbelievable.Would never go there again as we prefer a warm welcome from the hospitality sector.

We have been going to the homely maid for many many years, and it was always lovely popping in for its homely bakery cottage style food. However, over recent months things have gone badly downhill on the food. If a cheap shortcut can be taken, it now will. For instance, we ordered scones on the afternoon tea, and the scones are lovely and fresh but then they ruin things by serving with margarine and not butter, plus extremely cheap jam that is all colouring and sugar. The jam practically glows in the bowl it is so synthetic and cheap. Long gone are the days when you used to get a little bonne mamma pot of conserve. Anyway, who likes margarine with a scone? It is just silly cost cutting that surely alienates customers. Also had an egg "mayonnaise" sandwich. Where the mayonnaise was actually salad cream. Wasn't that last popular in the 1970s? The real reason, I suspect, is that salad cream is a cheaper alternative to foist onto the customers. Also, because they have their market stall, nearly all their stock is on the stall and not in the cafe. So you now have to ask, "what is left" every time you order. All the attention to detail in this place is now out the window. Talking of Windows, they need to open them. Don't sit in the corner where they have the reed diffuser. The perfume smell is overpowering, those things are for bedrooms not cafes.A constant positive is that the young serving staff are always pleasant, helpful and very friendly.

We went at lunch time on my Birthday, the seating was uncomfortable, my husband and I had different food, he had Liver and Bacon which he enjoyed, I had the Salmon, during the night I had bad stomach pains and spent much of the night in the bathroom, I can only assume this fish was not fresh,

This is a tiny restaurant on Hailsham High Street. It has seating for only about twenty people so is totally unsuitable for large groups! Service is very friendly and food mainly cooked to order. However, the food is as close to home-cooked as you are likely to get anywhere and the atmosphere pretty unique.
