Home farm has long been a go to breakfast/brunch venue for my family and we have been throughout the year and seen the shop evolve, close down and visited when possible around covid. But I’m disappointed to say that we won’t be returning for a long period of time. “Sit where you want” was an unusual greeting especially when the only suitable table was full of dirty pots.. after 15 minutes we asked to order.. the order was unfortunately wrong but we accept mistakes happen.. but the whole atmosphere wasn’t right. Items dropped on the floor by a server were ignored, the gritty black bits on the food were a concern, and we heard who we presume owns the place moaning about staff something we have unfortunately heard before. As others have said… this is a beautiful spot, with quality produce.. but too many things let the place down, and it’s priced similar to quality places where you can get the service you are paying for. We wanted the opportunity to give the feedback in person but were virtually ignored paying the bill.. embarrassment perhaps?

The service here is very poor. On entering we were advised that there was a 20 minute wait for hot food, we explained we were wanting tea and cake. We were told that wasn't a problem and shown to a table. We waited for 20 minutes and no one came to take our order although others arriving later were having orders taken. Eventually I went to the counter to enquire and our order was taken and paid for. Big mistake, we should have left before then. We waited and waited, we asked two separate people about our order and eventually received our tea and cake 25 minutes later. The tea was fine but we had to ask for milk, the millionaire's shortbread good, don't order the oreo cake - oversweet, dry and no flavour. During our long wait we watched the most mis- managed cafe I have ever been in. Customers chuntering because their orders not arriving and others who came in later getting their food first. Some tables being asked if they would like to order several times and others, like ourselves being completely ignored. Food being brought out from the kitchen and served to the wrong table. It appeared that no-one was in charge and management seemed to be non existent.

So we decided to go back and try the cafe again as we are regular visitor due to the nice walks etc. Sadly things just haven't changed, probably worse than before. Definitely over priced. We were charged £3 for one slice of toast and a small pot of jam (which we didn't ask for) . YES £3 for a slice of bread. We ordered the breakfast again £14 do not cheap but they are worse than the local greasy spoon cafe. Very poor and STILL full of black bits because they simply don't clean the griddle when cooking, it's disgusting. Your breakfast and eggs etc just come out with black griddle bits all.over it. Its horrible. Foe the price this is not acceptable just go elsewhere if you want a nice breakfast for the price. It's just poor overpriced food taking advantage of visitors. Fine for a coffee and cake (albeit expensive) but actual cooked food avoid. Its awful and poor. Such a shame this could be really good it's simply not ans we won't be going again. Twice bitten. Clean your griddle it's disgusting you serve breakfast like that! And stop ripping people off with £3 for a slice of bread for instance.

Very poor service. We went for a walk around the parkland and went to the cafe for a drink and sandwich. We entered at about a quarter to three; we were given a menu and sat at a table and waited to be served while the staff were chatting at the till. Eventually someone came to the table and told us the kitchen was closed. Apparently the cafe closes early if they aren’t busy. It would have been useful if they had turned us away when we tried to enter - or at least told us that food wasn’t an option. It’s annoying when you are seated, wait and wait to be served only to learn that you can’t eat. I was disappointed, as we’ve patronised the cafe fairly regularly. Fortunately the National Trust cafe were open and the food was good.

Found this place quite by chance when looking online for somewhere nearby to grab lunch, as we were holidaying in the area. We decided to sit inside as it was made quite clear on signs outside that there would be wasps in the outside sitting area. We were greeted by friendly staff and we found a table inside to sit at. It was busy so it did take a couple of minutes for staff to get round to taking our order but drinks came quickly after that. The food was delicious and fresh - two of us had tasty beef burgers and one had the ploughman’s. We were very impressed, and it was decently priced for what we had. Staff were all polite and the food was great so I’m finding it difficult to reconcile our experience with some of these other recent reviews! All in all, we would definitely come back if we were back in this area again.

Called in for lunch whilst on a day out with friends. Cafe was busy with lots of cyclists taking all the outside seating, we were directed to sit inside the cafe. We had to wait a couple of mins for our table to be cleaned then we seated, after about 5 mins i went to the counter to ask if we could order and was told someone would come to the table to take it. Then a large group of cyclists walked in, went to the counter and all ordered drinks and food saying they would eat it outside with their bikes. We waited another 5 mins but still no one came to take our order, all the time more walk ins were ordering to take away. We decided we would leave after about 10 minutes waiting, my wife got up to find to her horror that she had chocolate sauce/icing stains on the front of both her trouser legs - she was wearing white trousers ! We asked one of the girls at the counter for a cloth to try and minimise the damage, she brought some dry paper towels, offered no apology and never attempted to clean the table edge where the sauce had come from. Ruined my wife’s day, we left and will never return. Beautiful setting and the food we saw looked good but the place is very poorly managed and the customer service we experienced was the worst, yes it was busy but there was lots of staff who were completely disorganised.

We were hoping to all sit together to celebrate a friend's birthday but were told on arrival about the wasp problem. Dogs are not allowed in the cafe so 5 friends went inside to eat. 2 of us with dogs sat outside. When he mentioned the wasps and the fact we were stuck outside the comment was "well that is your fault". I don't think he meant to sound that rude but he really didn't care. There were a lot of wasps so we had the soup, which was delicious apart from soggy lettuce floating in it and my friend enjoyed her pannini. Other diners with sweet food were leaving it as the wasps were crawling over their scones, jam and cakes. I have been on a number of occasions and had very good service and food so it was a disappointing visit this time and very expensive for the conditions and what we got.

The 2* review is not for the food or service but for the experience. On arrival told in matter of fact fashion it was wasp season but not able to use inside with a dog. As soon as our cake and coffee arrived we were swarmed with wasps!! The cake and coffee were delicious but we were terrified as the wasps were on the plate and crawling under napkin. I ended up eating walking around and finished cake back in the car! There was nothing in place to try and control the situation. Tubs on shelf appeared to be covered with cling film, so no deterrent. Sadly we won’t return. Sad because the cake as delicious.

Heard some good comments about the steak night so thought we'd give it a try. Disappointed with the evening. Only 2 members of staff on, my drink of coke didn't taste very nice at all but the young girl was happy to change it. Asked for medium to well done steak, when it arrived the mushrooms were cold and when I cut into my steak it just ran blood! Sent it back and was returned nearly how I asked but my sauce didn't come back with it, so had to ask for it to be returned. Mushrooms were now hot?! Green beans had black bits on it, so didn't eat them. The biggest issue was the flies, they were everywhere! We all had to constantly flick them away from our food and wasn't an enjoyable night! We sat talking after our meal and we're then asked if wanted a pudding which we declined, but were asked again a little later and got the feeling we needed to leave. We wouldn't return sadly.

The best thing about this place is its location. Otherwise very unimpressive. Mediocre food and much overpriced. Added to this we were served by a very unprofessional waiter, probably around 60 years of age. When we complained about the poor quality of the lettuce which accompanied our fish sandwich he showed little interest and attempted to minimize the problem by saying that it was only really there for decoration anyway! Very poor.

Decided to leave a review after our latest visit today, 15/6/23 as have been visiting for years & have seen the service deteriorate over the last year or so, but see that it has all been said by previous reviewers! We have experienced exactly what has been commented on. You actually feel you are being a nuisance by visiting the cafe! Basil Fawlty eat your heart out! Why don't the people running this lovely establishment move over and let people who genuinely want to provide a service/run a business do so. Unless you request a table you can stand waiting to be attended to for an hour, unless you ask for your order to be taken it will probably never happen and then be prepared for a lengthy wait for your food, but check on that too because on one occasion the order got lost between the till and the kitchen! On a previous visit I actually overheard a customer waiting to pay his bill mention to the staff that there were several people standing waiting to be seated to which the staff member replied "yes that's fine" and proceeded to take absolutely no notice of the people queuing! On at least 4 occasions (including today) we have been told "bear with us, it's chaos today!" It was not actually busy today which I fear is due to everyone finally giving up on Home Farm Cafe which is what we are finally, sadly doing after today.

The drinks arrived fairly quickly, however after 40 minutes our food still hadn’t arrived. The waiter came over eventually to advise the order hadn’t come through to the kitchen due to a system issue. 10 minutes later half the order arrives. As two of us are about to finish our sandwiches (we were ravished by this point!) the rest of the order arrives! The items that arrived felt rushed (some sandwiches with no butter, others did) it was really disappointing. Little apologies from staff

As we were waiting we noticed the outside area began filling up with more customers. We also noticed that other people that sat down after us were getting their food before us, by this time we had been waiting nearly 40 minutes. My Mum went into ask where our food was and was told that they had forgotten our order. Not impressed. We were offered 2 more soft drinks on the house and waited a further 10 minutes for our food to come out. My mother was stung on her tongue when eating an ice-cream purchased in the Shepherd's Hut. I have directly contacted via your online form twice and via Facebook and have received zero response. The ice-cream was served with the wasp scooped up in the ice cream. She licked the ice cream and felt something sharp; thinking it was glass she wiped her fingers across the ice cream, and knocked out a wasp to the floor. Her and her friend who are very regular customers said at the time the whole area and hut was full of wasps and flies. I find it absolutely disgusting that you have ignored every attempt of communication. Feeling unwell and with a very swollen tongue they went home where they had to remove the sting, which was when the first attempt at contact was made. As we've all been regular customers for years we're shocked at such appalling lack of care in responding, and allowing so many flies and wasps to be within the Shepherd's Hut. We will also be passing this on to all of our friends and family in the area who also visit. Let's see if we get a response to this as it's in a public domain!?

Everything is homemade, and it's hard to resist the lovely display of cakes freshly baked. During the hot weather, there have been a few flies around, but I've noticed this everywhere lately, so I don't think that it's fair to criticise this lovely place, as if they are doing something wrong or are somehow responsible for the fact that we get flies in hot weather in this country. I had a really great lunch here today. I had a delicious quiche, which came with a side salad and homemade coleslaw. A very generous portion and lovely and fresh. I was impressed by the amount of homemade cakes, quiches and salads that were also available in the farm shop, so I just had to treat myself to some cake to take home!

We were passing and were delighted to come across this charmingly situated farm shop. I am a farm shop addict. The approach through the lodge gate is unique. The day was very hot, 33C!! and our border collie Fell, made very short work of a doggie ice-cream. The well laid-out shop has attractively displayed local produce. The variety of choice means there is something for everyone. The lamb cutlets are amazingly succulent and sweet and the loaf has excellent texture and flavour. We shall certainly return when we are next in the area. Until next time!!!

We popped in here for lunch when staying nearby. The shop was small with a selection of gifts and farm produce. It was in the middle of a heatwave when we visited and we were unable to sit in the cafe as the heat inside was unbearable. We sat in a pleasant courtyard just outside the cafe. The choice of food on the menu was extensive but also very very expensive. We chose the Quiche of the day which came with chips and a side salad. The food itself was tasty and freshly cooked, the quiche was outstanding. Unfortunately, our visit was plagued by flies. Whilst I accept this is a working farm and the weather was unusually hot I have never found myself in a similar situation in any other farm shop eatery. The amount of flies was incredible and it was impossible to enjoy our meal as they were continually landing on our food. It would have been quite amusing watching all the other visitors flapping their arms about but, in fact, it was torturous! We were seated near the condiment station which was in full sunshine when it was in excess of 28 degrees. The sachets of mayonnaise were red hot and the flies round the top of the sauce bottles, stuck in the sauce, was very unappetising. The owners had obviously made the effort to keep the flies out of the inside cafe with chain door screens. My poor review does not reflect our excellent meal and I really do not like to give such a low score However I would not return to Home Farm due to the fly issue and wish I had read the reviews before I visited as this seems to be an ongoing problem..... a real shame!

Came here with my family for a quick bite to eat. Had scones, which were OK, but nothing special. The main problem was the amount of flies that were around. Appreciate it is in the country and next door to a farm, but they need to do more to try and keep them out of the shop. The lady behind the counter said it was to do with one of the farms nearby spreading something new on his fields. If we go again, it will be in winter!!!

We enjoyed a delicious ice-cream in the Home Farm garden today, after a pleasant woodland walk with the dog. My hubby has recently had an eye operation and looks like he's been in the ring with Mike Tyson so, rather than eating in the cafe we bought home-made treats from the farm shop to eat at home. Sausage rolls, Millionaire Shortbread and Lemon Bake-well Tarts were all absolutely delicious – compliments to the chef/baker. Home Farm really is a hidden gem and well worth a visit. It is always lovely food and great service from very friendly staff. See you again soon!

As we were visiting nearby Beningbrough hall, we discovered this lovely farm shop and cafe while we were exercising our dogs. We bought some delicious bits and bobs from the shop and enjoyed coffee and enormous fruit scone and cake in the cafe. Yes, pricey and not the friendliest service, but still a lovely treat.

We have visited many farm shops and this one was in a lovely setting. The inside is very rustic with a little coffee shop. The prices are expensive but we still came away with a couple of carrier bags full of produce. But in all honesty the produce looks better than it tastes. The pork pies are bland, very little taste, and the scotch eggs were just ok. We had a pork and black pudding one and a pulled pork one, nice but not brilliant. The red storm cheese which is brought in from the Snowdonia creamery is awesome, and although the coleslaw is very nice £2.50 for not even a full tub is out there. Probably wouldn't visit again.

I have visited here a few times recently and the food is lovely, if a little expensive and the staff are friendly. The main issue is with flies and wasps, they really need to put something up at the doors to stop them coming in or something to trap them when they are in, it has put me off going again. I went in last week with my 3 week old daughter and spent the whole time wafting flies from her head, it wasn’t a pleasant experience unfortunately.

My daughter and I took Izzy the black Labrador for a walk through the woods and by the river. After a lovely walk we were ready for a spot of lunch. We sat outside with the dog on a lovely day. I had the hallumi stack burger with roast peppers chunky chips coleslaw and side salad and my daughter the quiche. We both agreed the food was beautifully served and tasty. We followed this with Yorkshire curd-tart for me and my daughter a piece of ginger cake. To finish we enjoyed a latte. Definitely recommend good service and gorgeous food what’s no to like.

Party of four went for lunch on a very showery day. We went in soon after noon and got seated quickly but the place filled up quickly so I’m glad we did go early. Maybe it would have been less busy inside if the weather had been better as there were plenty more tables outside in the rain.

We have lived within 5 miles of Beningbrough Hall and Home Farm for 20 years, but only rarely visit the Home Farm Cafe/Shop. The quality of what is on sale in the shop is very good and varied but prices are high. This time we had breakfast after a long walk along the river and in the bluebell wood nearby. The cafe was busy but with tables available which were cleared after a little while. Service from cheerful young people was attentive, and our food arrived in good time. Helen had porridge with syrup and doorstep toast, butter and raspberry jam which seemed to be home made. All of it was delicious, she said, groaning slightly. My Full English was superb, and lacked only fried bread to be excellent. High quality ingredients,(free range eggs with bright orange yolks) had been very well cooked and nearly defeated me, too.

Seriously over priced. £4.50 for porridge with runny honey. The porridge arrives with the consistency of lumpy custard and it’s been done in the microwave I suspect, with too much water added to it. Coffee, a Latte priced at £2.95 tastes not a lot like coffee at all. How disappointing and I’ve no desire to challenge the staff. I hope you fair better off than I have!

Reliably tasty - if a little pricey - food on offer within walking distance of Beningbrough Hall (and, via Rawcliffe Meadows and Overton Road, cycling distance of York). A tuna & cheese panini and a Wensleydale and carrot chutney sandwich, accompanied by a pot of tea and fabulous thick cut chips, went down very well indded. You can sit either inside or out. Specials available. Friday is fish & chips day! Farm animals in adjacent fields. The farm shop itself has an excellent range, too.

We have been to Home Farm so many times over the summer, including a walk by the river. We decided to go for Sunday breakfast for a change which is served until 11.30am. Everything was cooked perfectly, always a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff cannot do enough for you. It is also dog-friendly. A very pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning. We didn't realise until we were told by the ladies at Home Farm that Beningbrough Hall also had a free open day so this was a real treat. Ideal for families and we always take a few things home from the farm shop. We will be back.

After visiting the hall next door and seeing fruit trees laden with ripe fruit and some amazing herbs and produce in the walled gardens it whetted my apetite to cook some lovely fresh stuff so when we called he I was eager to see what fresh fruit and veg they had available. - what a disappointment, the greengrocery was average fayre you find in you local supermerket but not as fresh. I was spoiled for choice on jars of pickles and jams but looking more closely many of them are not even locally produced. The fresh bread looked amazing but I didn't need any bread that day. It struck me that this was more an opportunity to extract money from tourists than a proper farm shop selling good quality local produce. Fine if you want a mass produced jar of jam or packet of biscuits and you don't worry about miles from where it was made but not a place where you can buy fresh locally sourced produce
