Holmbush Inn in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Food and service was good. However, the atmosphere was poor with few people visiting.

Excellent food, good beer and friendly helpful staff. Dog friendly and a really good quiz on Wednesday. We have been here 3 times in the last week and would definitely come back. Wish we lived close enough to make it our local Back in Cornwall on holiday and back to the Holmbush Inn. We knew what to expect this time and I'm glad to say the standard is just as good.

Called after a walk. Three of us had roast, which wasn't very warm, one ordered chicken didn't receive it had to ask for it they had forgotten it.

Clean, smart, and comfortable pub, but not posh. Friendly and helpful staff. Decent food and a fair price. I'd enjoy going back again.

Disappointing Experience – Won’t Be Returning I was extremely unhappy with the food I received at the Holmbush in St Austell. I ordered the rolled shoulder of pork, expecting a tender, flavourful dish as described on the menu. Instead, what arrived was a fibrous, tasteless log of pulled pork, drenched in a watery, flavourless liquid that could hardly be called cider, apple, and sage gravy. The so-called sautéed potatoes were nothing of the sort—properly sautéed potatoes should be pan-fried, not just thrown on a plate and soaked in the same bland liquid. Encouraged by my family, I took my plate to the bar to voice my complaint. I sensed reluctance from the staff, so I offered to pay for an alternative meal just to get something edible while my family ate theirs. On top of this, we also had an issue with the ribs and chicken wings meal—after being told they had run out of wings, they still charged us full price and brought out only three small ribs. I had to complain again just to get additional ribs to make up for the missing wings. The only reason I’m giving two stars instead of one is because my replacement meal was actually good. However, I should never have been charged for the inedible dish I sent back. To make matters worse, it was my suggestion to dine here, as we’d had good experiences on previous visits while staying with my in-laws. Unfortunately, after this experience, the Holmbush has lost not just our group of four but two locals as well. Very disappointing!

We were driving past the Holmbush Inn and thought we would stop for some food and drink, the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was really good, if I'm in the area again I will definitely visit the Holmbush Inn.

Went here for a birthday meal with some friends. We had a great time, the food, the service and the atmosphere was bang on.

The pub looks great .Very welcoming , dog and people friendly. The staff were very nice . The log burner was on and looked lovely. The conservatory is looking really nice . Great place to eat . The food was cooked to perfection . We are local and took mum to celebrate her 90th birthday. She enjoyed her food and her shandy and had a lovely time. Thank you to everyone who made the meal so nice and we cannot recommend the pub enough. See you all soon

We came to the holmbush after it has been refurbished and taken over by new management…… absolutely brilliant it is clean fresh and delightfully refurbished but more importantly delicious food and really great efficient pleasant service. We will definitely be returning more frequently. So nice to have a good local eatery.

Visiting someone in St Austell who had a birthday coming up, so decided to treat to Sunday lunch. Table was booked in advance, very accommodating as table near to door. We all chose the carvery and had beef with usual trimmings. The Yorkshire puds, my favourite part of a Sunday lunch were huge but over done and so hard the knife just shattered them. The beef was very well done to the point of being quite dry, and similarly, the veg were well done to the point of being limp. The person we were treating seemed to enjoy it which was the whole point, the rest of us not so much. Great that the pub is dog friendly, but maybe limit them to one section of the restaurant. Friendly bar staff.

Really great place. Everyone was friendly. Service was quick. Food was really tasty . Been free twice now and always a great time. Would highly recommend the carvery

We only had drinks so cannot rate the food. Popped in daytime for a drink and the pub had people in but wasn’t busy it was nice and quiet we got served straight away I was with friends, kids and a dog all were welcome. I wouldn’t normally rate a place on drinks alone but the barman was so friendly here it needed saying. He was friendly, welcoming and made conversation. The pub was very nice inside I would say traditional pub but very well presented with a modern feel. Lots of parking behind the bar and wheelchair friendly access. Based on our interaction I will return to try the food as it’s nice to be so well received it makes us want to return on our next trip to st Austell.

Went for a family members birthday. Pre ordered beforehand, ended up sending half the meals back to the Kitchen as they were not as described or flavourless. Ordered replacements that were equally as bad. Desserts were pretty good though. Won’t be back, but hope they’ll improve for future guests.

Popped in for lunch and ordered off the lunch menu ..We had lasagne and I was very disappointed 😞 it was swimming in grease and it was mainly cheese with a very small amount of beef mince and the garlic bread was enimic...I'm all for a dog friendly pub but there were a group of rowdy blokes in with a dog that constantly cried and clearly didn't want to be in there...

Ordered fish and salad no dressing on salad came out gush and Chips had to send back then got fish and a plate full of lettuce with mustard dressing and nothing was done about it never go back again

We had a carvery. It was 'OK'. What let it down was no turkey and rock-hard stuffing. Would have been nice if peas were on offer. On the plus side, the meats that were available were cooked just right. Gravy was nice. For the quality, what we paid was expensive.

First visit to this Pub/Restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. Good atmosphere, staff friendly and food very good. We had a delicious gammon steak, which came with Chips, large mushroom, large grilled tomato, peas, 2 eggs and 2 pineapple rings. We will be back! Dog friendly 🐶

A local that is more of a place to go to eat. In recent months the atmosphere has changed makedly for the better. Dogs are welcome, doggy treats & water readily available for dogs

Looking for somewhere to eat whilst renovating our bungalow we have just bought in St Austell, we’ve drove past Holmbush Inn a few times but never been in. So glad we did! We were a family party of three adults, we opted for one of the specials on the two meals for £26. Me and my father in law had the Hunters Chicken, the chicken breast was both succulent and very tasty, lots of chips and salad on the side. My husband had the mixed grill, wow - it was massive and he enjoyed it very much, I had his onion ring and piece of hogs pudding which was delicious. They have a great range of drinks, very spacious and comfortable inside and the hot chocolate was delicious! So good we are going back this evening!

Not quite a 5 star meal but good selection of beverages and staff were very welcoming. Ordered the fish and chips, and whilst the fish wasn’t all too spectacular compared to some of the other eateries in the surrounding area, the Holmbush Inn certainly has the best chips out of all the places I’ve reviewed in the past 6 months. You can tell the staff work hard to keep the place clean and welcoming. We had a pleasant visit in all honesty, would definitely come back again.

Took Granddaughter for a meal there this evening. Staff were very warming and pleasant nothing was too much for them Food was awesome.

Poor sizing. Spent more time waitingfor food. . The salmon was the size for a borrower, lacking salmon whatsoever on the starter. Main was okay. Dessert. Well I could have bought more at asda. Not worth it. Would like a refund.

Came here for family Christmas meal, pub was closed when we arrived and we had to wait outside in the worst storm of the year, apart from that it was OK

I regularly come to the Hombush for lunch. The staff are all really lovely. The food is nice, reasonably priced and a nice variety on the menu. My only thing I would say is perhaps vary the desert menu a bit more. Other than that keep up the good work 👏

Ordered pork & noodles but too grease smelled bad I did tell the staff all they say was that they are sorry will not go back I did inform bar staff that the food was crap and I didn't receive any check or asked if I wanted anything else

Absolutely smashing mid week roast dinner. I opted for the beef which was cooked perfectly. Fluffy potatoes along with other seasonal veg made for a perfect tum full of food. Lovely friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere too, what a great all rounder The Holmbush Inn is.

We called in at a lunchtime and were welcomed by the friendly staff. There was a wide choice on the menu & some good offers. The food was 1st class. The whole pub was so clean too. Visiting the toilets before leaving saw them 'fit for a Queen's! All round excellence. Thank you.

This was our only visit of our holiday . Now previously we’d have made many visits to the pub during our week . We parked up , entered the pub and found the table Went to the bar to order food : but was met hu some rude locals who didn’t let me get near the bar to pay . After this we went to get our food Normally on a Sunday lunch there is : Turkey / beef / gammon / pork Peas , carrots , swede etc Mash and roast spuds We were told no Turkey but would be getting some for Christmas. Is a Turkey just for Christmas? Cabbage , cauliflower cheese , swede , red cabbage , parsnip and roast potatoes . So a few vegetable varieties missing . Now as I said we’d been here before and had some of those missing vegetables, meats and spuds …. Consequently we left feeling a little disappointed. And as I said we didn’t go back that week .

Never been in a pub where you have to eat while freezing. Several people had coats on while eating their meals. When we mentioned to staff about it being cold in here, we were told to run a few laps of the bar or jump up and down to warm up. Won't be back here again.

We ate here after a visit to the area. Lovely decor & atmosphere. Really dog friendly with treats, bowls, blankets! Food was great for all of us, as was the service.

Nice place to have a meal. Kid and dog friendly. Only reason it's not 5* is that they had some board games to play but none where playable due to missing pieces. Good free WiFi. Good service and good.

Met some locals inside the bar who were incredibly nice and very accommodating. Unfortunately all the bar staff cared about was cleaning and closing the pub. They were extremely rude and didn’t want our custom. It was very disappointing after last time we visited the waiting staff were very welcoming. It was 2115 when we arrived and didn’t allow us to finish our drinks at 2250 saying that they gave us plastic cups and we had to leave. There priorities clearly lied with getting home and not the experience of there customers

Called in for a quick dinner, own car park nice seating areas. Large menu. Had scampi and chips with mushy peas, very nice. Clean toilets

Nice pub resturaunt. We are local so pop in occasionally for a drink. Preferred it before when the pool table and quiz machines were there but still nice. Havnt eaten here in a while but always seems busy. Not keen on location which is why it's not our preferred choice. Good parking behind but right on a main road.

Love this pub! Looks great since the refurb and the food is spot on too. Sunday carvery all round and not one complaint from 5 of us. The regular size was plenty big enough, especially if you want dessert after.

Looks lovely from the outside and just as nice on the inside that's were it ends. The Pork and Noddles dish I ordered was without a shadow of a doubt the most bland tasteless meal I've ever been served I had to ask for some soy sauce to give some semblance of flavour !!!

Very happy with our lunch today. We stopped as we were passing through we were glad we did. I difficulty choosing what to have because there were lots of dishes I wanted ( which is my definition of a good menu, a bad menu is one where I have to pick the least boring dish) . The staff were friendly. Food was served all day. A big advantage for us was that they're dog friendly. You never know what you're going to get when you just pull off the road but on this occasion we're we were blessed.

Everything and everyone was brilliant, nothing too much trouble , it can’t be changed only downside is the parking , but when inside for a carvery well it was superb everything was great and cooked very well all meats were very tasty and tender top marks will be back again 👌👌👍👍👍👍

My husband and myself were recently in Cornwall for a short holiday. We arranged to meet some of my lovely family (who reside near St. Austell) at this venue for Sunday Lunch. All of us chose the Sunday Carvery which I can honestly say was the best carvery I have ever had. None of us were disappointed. Generous portions, good choice of meats and Vegetables and all very fresh and hot. The staff were really friendly and helpful. My Nephews son - that being my great nephew and his girlfriend have a very young baby, so we were found a table in a corner out of the way which was so appreciated and perfect for feeding the baby. I can thoroughly recommend the 'Holmbush Inn', my family will definitely be using it again as will we next time we are in Cornwall.

My son and I came in on Tuesday 27th for an evening meal which we loved. The food was amazing and all of the staff were so lovely and welcoming. We enjoyed it so much, we returned last night and the service and food were amazing again. The lovely lady (I’m so sorry, I can’t remember her name) who showed us to our table last night remembered us from the previous night which was lovely. Unfortunately, we were only staying in the area for 2 nights, but we will definitely be back when we return to Cornwall.

First visit for us here and we were certainly not disappointed . Huge dog friendly pub/restaurant and very busy but all the staff were very friendly helpful professional and handled the busyness very well indeed . I had the homemade steak and ale pie my wife had the homemade seafood gratin . The food and service was first class so much so , I sought out the manager to thank her and to pass on our thanks to chef and staff . Really was a lovely meal .

We were on a weekend break for our anniversary and went in for food as we googled it was dog friendly. It was amazing. Staff so helpful and it was busy but plenty off room for everyone. Drake our dog loved it as they had a dog stand full of treats,water bowls and blankets. The food was stunning . What I would call home comfort pub food. I had the seafood gratin and its the best one I've had anywhere. Big chunky haddock,salmon and prawns with a breadcrumb and cheese topping. My husband had the steak&ale pie. So chunky. We thanked the manager it was that good. Gonna go back again when we come down next as I bet the roast will be amazing

Lovely place to go if in Cornwall and if you have dogs they are made to feel most welcome they supply dogs with a bowl and even provide a blanket during the dogs stay our dogs loved it fell asleep on the blanket whilst we ate our meal food was delicious 😋 😊

Really friendly staff, we sat outside in the sun with there big umbrella to give shade to my sister. loads of indoor seating aswell We had fish and chips &vegan burger, very yummy, decent portions. free tap water, dog friendly

Lovely evening out great meal ìn this pub that's just been revamped

Out of area on holiday from Newcastle and booked a table on a whim. Arrived to a lovely bright clean bar area where and bingo was in full swing, table clearly reserved and accessible, great selection of alcoholic beverages both local and international. Food was lovely, we picked off the specials and went with chicken and chorizo skewers, and, garlic and basil linguine
